Since the weather looked monsoon-free this weekend, we decided to head to the Huachucas. We arrived at the trailhead at Ramsey Vista Campground around 7:30, and headed up towards Carr Peak. The trail was in good shape, with a relatively gradual incline. Lots of wildflowers all around. By about mile 2, I was already talking about needing a post-hike hamburger and fries, and I didn't shut up about it for the next 12 miles.
We got to Carr Peak, seeing several deer just below the summit, and took a short snack break while enjoying the views. After that, we continued over to the Crest Trail, and south to Miller Peak. The Crest Trail was brushy in places, but not too terrible. We took a lunch break on Miller Peak and watched some rain clouds approach from the south, which spurred us to get back on the trail before any bad weather arrived. We passed 9 other hikers just below the summit on our way back down, and besides 1 solo backpacker we saw earlier, they were the only people we saw all day.
Once back on the loop, we turned on to Hamburg Trail at Bear Saddle, and followed it down to Comfort Springs trail. Descending through the canyon was gorgeous, although the running water made for lots of bugs. Once climbing up Comfort Springs, the bugs disappeared, but a light rain finally caught up to us. It was pleasant to walk through, and there was never any lightning, so we didn't rush, arriving back to the car a little after 3:00. The Huachucas were quite enjoyable, and if they were a little closer to Phoenix, I'd hike there more often. |
