| no partners | | An MMRP night hike during which I saw a bunch of critters...
I did this loop: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (long way), Pemberton, Stoneman, and back through the competitive track area via a service road.
At the beginning of my hike I saw a tortoise on Escondido. It was camera shy (or just scared) because it crawled into a bush. I got a shot of it, but the bush is obscuring it somewhat.
On Scenic, I think, I saw a white sphinx moth caterpillar. Later on, I saw all manner of moths, some of them may well have been of the white sphinx variety. These moths were so numerous and liked my headlamp so much that I ended up holding the lamp in my hand to keep the moths away from my face.
In Stoneman Wash, I missed my turn for the service road, but while looking for it, I came across a coiled up, probably sleeping, rattlesnake. Backtracking, I came across another one - it appeared to be smaller than the first.
Out of the wash, now on the service road, I saw several packrats, a scorpion, and another snake - perhaps a corral snake. I'll check the coloration when I take a look at the photos.
I also came across at least fifteen mountain bikers. The weather is getting nicer and they're coming out again. After seeing two lone riders while starting out, I saw a largish group prior to sunset on the Scenic Trail. The lead guys were going fast and were wearing arm and leg armor. Later on, after dark, on the Pemberton, I saw a women's group who were crossing Stoneman Wash.
It was a dark night; I had originally put my headlamp on so that the cyclists would see me, but once I started using it, my night vision was gone, so I kept it on when I entered Stoneman Wash. Good thing I did as there's a chance that I might have stepped on a snake had I not been using it. |
