In the past have frequently seen wildlife, deer or sheep on the slope below the ridgeline in this quieter less traveled area. I wasn’t that early today ,about an 0730 start but apparently I was the first one up Siphon Draw Trail this am, when I reached the bowl I noticed the waterfall had lost its trickle from a couple of weeks ago. Then on getting above the bowl but below the saddle in the draw on the left ,the route to 4102, was a small herd of bighorn sheep, I counted at least 9, I remained still a bit then went up on some smooth rock just below the saddle and assumed a sniper position. The bighorns either did not notice me or deemed me not a threat, I was able to observe them for awhile very entertaining as they continued grazing and rock hopping back and forth across the draw , too bad one of the real haz photographers were not around, tried a few shots with my phone just a little too far away for decent pictures.Anyway I believe there is an unwritten rule about the more and heavier photo equipment you bring the less likely you see anything. Finally after 20 to 30 minutes some other hikers came up the bowl and the sheep began moving further away up the draw. Encountering wildlife always makes a hike more memorable. |
