In my search for solitary hikes, I have been hitting some "peaks less traveled" lately. Next up, Stewart Mountain. My first hike up to these peaks.

I was running late so I did not start this hike until past 11am. The clouds were pretty cool at the start, I wish I could have started earlier.

I kinda sorta followed a gps track on the way up. I knew I had to follow the wash up to the chute and then stay to the left. I the chute itself did not look appealing. The terrain on the left was not so nice either. A nasty boulder hop up with the added bonus of really high dead grass and a plethora of thorny plants in between the boulders. I was a slow mover on the way up for sure. Just about to the valley/saddle, I picked up some cairns and followed those up the rest of the way.

Once I made it to the flat section, I took in the views of Four Peaks and then made a straight shot to Peak 2968. I opted to go up the northern slope of the east side and then take the little ridgeline up to the summit. Excellent views of the McDowell's, Red Mountain, Fountain Hills. The wind was really going strong up on top. I found the register and signed in.

My next stop was 2961. I wanted to go up and see what the microwave repeater was all about. The hike down the slope of 2968 was steep and nasty, but I made it down. I made my way up to the repeater and the cell transponder. Interesting to see this up close after looking at it all these years. From there, I made my way to the top. I took some pictures, took a little break and had some lunch. The traffic on the Bush Highway was non-stop. I had parked right in front of the Butcher Jones sign. I could see others parking on the opposite side as well. Lots of people out on the 4x4 roads as well.

After my break, I was looking across to the third peak, 2931. My desire for nasty boulder hopping up and down that one was not very high, so I opted to take a diagonal descent from 2961 to the chute. I picked up the cairned route again and followed it down.

This hike took me longer than expected. The views on the middle peak, 2961 are amazing. When I come up here again, I will make sure I have some clouds or perhaps hike up in the dark for a sunrise or hit it for a sunset?
