USFS Payson Ranger District has partnered with several private organizations to pursue major improvements to the Highline and Pine area trails. As some of the before-the-action work, the new routes have to be cleared by an archeologist. I spent Monday and Tuesday leading him over the re-alignment routes. Much of the proposed routes are through nearly-impenetrable brush, making for slow going and some interesting “hiking.”
Monday we went up the Red Rock Spring route, then east over several proposed routes, exiting at Geronimo. Tuesday we accessed the Highline above Bray Creek Ranch, went east to North Sycamore Creek then backtracked to Bray Creek and continued west to Geronimo.
We found one “site,” a lithic scatter. A white rock lying among a sea of red ones proved to be a scraper. Several flakes were found nearby. I now know what a “bi-face” is—a rock worked on both sides intended to become a point. We found a couple, which excited the archeologist somewhat.
With luck and perseverance, the clearances will be complete next spring and the involved organizations can start applying for grants to get the work done. It’s all sort of a BAG, as in big audacious goal, but it starts somewhere. |
