I scouted this a few weeks ago and collected a waypoint for the actual boundary. The trail crosses it on a steep uphill run in very rocky terrain.
But Richard--“Mazatzal” here on HAZ— is the resident Mazzie historian and he knew the original sign location, a few hundred yards short of the actual boundary in a small, level, scenic clearing. I noticed an empty post there when I scouted it but didn’t register it being the original Wilderness sign location. This is clearly the better spot even if it is a bit short of the actual boundary.
We motored up the trail with the crawler-hauler, cut and trimmed a hefty dead juniper post along the way, and planted it in the exact original spot. Lunch around the worksite was quite enjoyable with much trail talk and world problem solving—if only they would ask us old guys. Then reload and head back down to the vehicles.
Thanks to Richard, Roger, John, Gordon, Mike and Joe. Another great day on the AZT. |
