Thursday a small but loyal crew assembled to install a gate and a couple AZT reassurance signs on the new alignment of Passage 25, southwest of Pine. Over two-miles of the 7+ have been built by machine, and almost as much within the Mazatzal Wilderness is complete.

The big issue with this area is access, ~two miles is over a very rocky and rough road that takes just about an hour to traverse in granny-low and you want good tires.

The gate was the priority. Two of us had staged it and the concrete on-site Wednesday so all was ready when we finally got there. Rocks slowed the process a bit but all went well if a little slow. Farm boy Gordon offered a technique for attaching the fence wires that worked incredibly well, something that has been a problem through 80+ gate installations!

Driving those roads was so tedious we opted to use the tracked hauler over the new trail to get to the mile-distant sign site rather than spending another hour in the vehicles. This meant we had to rake out a mile of the machine tracks on the way back.

As we were installing the second reassurance sign a large Basset dog showed up, out of nowhere. We watched for her owner to arrive but no such luck. Since we had cell service I posted a “found dog” notice and photo on the local community page.

Shadows were getting long as we loaded everything into the vehicle and trailer—including the dog on Roger’s lap—and started the hour-long crawl back to civilization. By the time we got to town the dog’s owner was located and she picked Rosie up; apparently Rosie has quite a reputation for wandering off and activating the local lost-dog alert system.

Another fine day on the AZT, thank you Richard, Gordon and Roger for a very long and productive day.
