Figured this would be a good hike today as Lost Goldmine trail is south facing and shadeless so a winter like day was perfect. Did I mention it was windy, was surprised by the strength of some of the gusts. The cairned route up Turks Head favors the north side and with the canyon between it and the south face of Superstition Mountain it created a wind tunnel effect. First I was concerned about keeping a hat on then I became concerned about staying upright .Needless to say I didn’t stand up on the top. Noticed the ammo can I left earlier this year at the summit was still there, between wind gusts did a little cairn restoration. Added a little extra by hiking Lost Goldmine a bit further east to the rock formation with the bedrock mortars before returning.Only saw 6 others on Lost Goldmine and as usual no one else on Turks Head. Disappointingly no wildlife or cattle out, a couple of ATV’s came up the Jeep road at the summit base. |
