It wasn’t great but I’ll say it wasn’t as depressing as I feared as much of the hike was in untouched areas, I was surprised however by the acrid smell of the moonscape I hiked through. First , Peralta Road is in great condition, the pit toilets are open and according to the sign cleaned twice a week there was no register at the start at least today. Left the 10 assorted vehicles in the lot and started up passed two hikers on the way up and two more went by on the way down on this nice cool sunny morning. The burn area was first noted between the unnamed cave and the eye on the trail continuing to on the saddle and into East Boulder Canyon. From the saddle decided to visit the lone pine tree and needle overlook, the burned area goes right up to the tree. The upper Barks route looks toasted. On the way to start the Cave Trail a larger group of about 8 hikers passed by me as they headed toward the tree. They shadowed me on the way back to the trailhead.Once approaching Geronimo Cave the burn area was left behind. Forget about visiting the cairn crop created in the alcove near Geronimo’s Cave its been razed. I decided to take the defunct Don’s Trail over to Dutchman Trail to return from there. From viewing into Barkley Basin it appeared the burn area paralleled the lower Barks route into or out of Barkley Basin, also appeared to get to the turn for the route to quarter circle u ranch off Lost Dutchman would require entering the burn area.So remember BBB, if the route name includes Barks or Barkley then it’s Burnt. |
