Took the store-bought knee out for a spin to do a little Steward Monitoring and Maintenance between Pine and Oak Spring. This six-mile foray was the longest yet, following some other trail work events closer in. All went extremely well for eight weeks post installation.

We accessed the trail from Cletus-Ray, a street in the extreme southwest area of Pine. The trail there follows an ancient roadbed to a short single-track route through tall pines to the AZT. The first task was to close a short section of trail that was replaced a year or so ago by a more gentle and scenic section. Somehow this reroute hasn’t made it into the official app. Then on to a hiker-reported, larger than expected deadfall which we dispatched with considerable sawing and pry-bar action. It’s high through-hiker season and we met five of them, all intent on real food and maybe a zero day in Pine. Some stop to chat, others seem to be zoned out and just pass by with hardly a nod.

We continued to Oak Spring for a snack break. The pipe to the trough has lost its siphon and we spent time trying-unsuccessfully-to reestablish it. It will take more tools or smarts than we had with us. But water is flowing nearby, and the trough is three-quarters full from maybe groundwater. Then back to the truck; the knee did well, the heart and lungs after nearly a year of much-reduced activity and the background TMB syndrome, not so much. But it’s great to be out and about again.
