| partners | | Angela invited me to join her and her friend Deborah for a hike out at Hawes. I was up for anything she suggested, especially some new to me trails, so this was a good loop.
We parked at the north end of the loop, crossed the road, and headed southwest on Saguaro Trail. Some small ups and downs, which was the them for most of the loop, and some nice views of Red Mountain. Most of the junctions seemed to be signed, but having a track was helpful since trails seem to head in every direction.
We made our way south on Granite Trail, then Ridge Trail, before getting onto Hawes Trail. Took that south, then east along the edge of the neighborhood. Near the southeast corned of the loop, we turned onto Magic Mtn Trail. This one headed west for a bit before turning north. There were some steep spots on this one, but they were short. There were also some nice sections through a wash, and some interesting rock formations--similar to the north end of the McDowells.
We turned north on Saddle Trail and followed that to Saguaro Trail (again) at the north end of the loop, taking that west to finish out. That section of Saguaro was also nice as it followed a ridge with some good views in all directions, a few mines, and lots of quartz. Saguaro also had a few steep spots coming off the ridge, with the decomposed granite trying to make you lose your footing.
Nice day for this one, especially with the breeze and high clouds. We didn't see many hikers (mostly just two groups in the first half) nor many bikers, but I'm sure weekends are a mess of bikes. |
