Lots of folks hiking and riding horses on this Saturday but we soon left the hordes behind after passing the intersection of the Tortuga and Elephant Mountain trails as we progressed around the loop in a clockwise direction. There have been times in the past when the Limestone Trail was difficult to follow being partially overgrown and with confusing side trails. But today the trail was easy to follow and most of the side trails had a row of rocks placed across them at the intersections making it clear which one was the correct trail to follow. There are some steep rocky sections of the Limestone Trail which required a great amount of caution and the welcome use of my trekking poles to safely cross them. However my nimble footed Grandson was not deterred and scampered through these sections with ease. As usual we were on the lookout for birds but saw few that hung around long enough for photos. Unfortunately there was a complete absence of wild flowers which I had expected to start showing by now. Once reaching the Spur Cross Trail along Cave Creek we again encountered the hordes including at least 3 long strings of horseback riders, none of which looked accustomed to this mode of transportation. |
