| no partners | | New trails have been built in the Fountain Hills Preserve, the North Leg Trail and the Lower Ridgeline Trail. The North Leg Trail connects from the Promenade Trail and heads east about 0.8 miles for an out and back. 200-300' of elevation is lost as you head down a ridge. The Lower Ridgeline connects to the Ridgeline Trail and does a similar thing heading down a ridge, but it then heads back up to the Ridgeline Trail to make a loop.
I got an earlier than usual start, just after 5:30am in an attempt to beat the heat a little. It was 95 when I left my house in Mesa and pretty humid. When I got out of the car at the Adero Trailhead, it was noticeable cooler being 1000' higher and some light breezes and shade.
The shade last in spots heading down and back along the North Leg Trail, but by the time I got to the Ridgeline, it was all sun. The heat was kicking pretty good when I was done, but there were still breezes that made a huge difference to cool me off. Took the Lower Ridgeline Trail to the overlook there and then took the shorter leg back up to the Ridgeline and went out to the end of that trail and headed back. Ended up with 8 miles for the day, and quite a lot more AEG than I had expected.
Saw 4 deer, 2 doe and 2 bucks in felt, along the Ridgeline Trail. They started to run and I thought they would be over the hill before I had a change to get some pics, but I think the heat had an effect on them once they started to run. They did eventually head over the hill, but much slower than you normally see deer go.
Passed 2 other hikers coming the other way, and saw 2 more from a distance walking along the level Promenade Trail as I hiked the ups and downs of the Ridgeline. |
