| no partners | | Started from the Desert Vista Trailhead. Took Hawk's Nest to a small segment of the Dixie Mountain Loop, then Valle Verde, then the north leg of the Great Horned Owl Trail to Cactus Wren, then the south leg of Great Horned Owl, repeated the Cactus Wren and returned on the Desert Tortoise Trail. Saw a few hikers and bikers very early on, everyone dropped out fast with the heat. I did see one guy who was heading back up Hawk's Nest as I was finishing up.
On the western end of the Great Horned Owl Loop and also north of Cactus Wren, there are unmarked single track trails. I don't know if they're planned, and I can't remember seeing them 8 years ago when I was here last. Maybe worth a return trip sometime to check out. Finished up by 10:30am and got over 1100' AEG for the day, nice workout. |
