It was too hot to go jogging, so I waited until early evening and took a walk over to the Nis Fortress, which is about a mile away from where my in-laws live. Inside the fortress is a big landscaped area with lots of trees for shade and a lot of very historic ancient ruins from Roman times.
This fortress is one of 2 big historic monuments in Nis. The approach they take towards this has it good and bad points. There are several businesses within the fortress, selling drinks, food and souvenirs. But the business that closed aren't cleared out properly, they're just abandoned. A lot of things are in disarray and not very well taken care of, but I have seen some improvements in the last 2 decades. Hopefully they're trending in the right direction. It's still an interesting place to visit and spend time with family and friends, or just take a walk.
I did a few laps inside the fortress, going on top of some of the gates, and then took the paths by the Nisava River back to my in laws before dark. Just enough to get some exercise for the day and see the local sites again. |
