The trail begins with a steady, moderately steep climb through old-growth forest on a wide, well-used path. We paused at a sweet campsite in an opening with views to the west.
Climbing out of the forest, we made a short, talus-covered ascent to the peak. It was windy and on the cool side, but the 360-degree views were outstanding. It was also my first view of Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced POND-uh-RAY).
For some variety, we decided to drop down the backside of the mountain to meet up with the trail to South Chilco Peak before heading back to the trailhead.
All in all, it was a great warm-up starter hike for the rest of the week in northern Idaho.
