Chris invited me on this combo loop - Pass Mountain/Bulldog saddle. We started in the dark from the Meridian Trailhead and did the the CCW.

It was a vibrant sunrise to the southeast and the weather was pleasant. The came across 3 groups doing the same loop before we even hit the Pass Mountain trail.

The trail was in the usual excellent shape and we made good time. The cloudy skies gave way to a hazy day, but the scenery is always pretty nice along this one.

The volume of hikers, trail runners and bikers increased the closer we go the the Wind Cave TH. That was overflowing with parking lots full all the down to the main drive.

The southside of the loop was the usual rocky roller coaster, but we made good time.

Thanks for the invite Chris.

It has been over 4 years since I have done this hike so I figured that it was time to do it again.

This hike is basically a combination of the Peak 3004 Loop and the Pass Mountain Loop.

We started at the Meridian TH and made our way up to Bulldog Saddle. From there we followed the trail that looped around the north side of Peak 3004 before making our way up to the Pass Mountain Saddle. From there we looped around Pass Mountain on our way back to the TH.

This is a pretty decent hike, and it seems more green our here than it does in the McDowell Mountains, where I have been hiking lately.

There were some fruits on saguaros and a few prickly pear.

I wasn't sure where I would end up hiking this weekend, but Chris invited me to hit this cool little loop. This his "recovery" hike after hitting Mt Wrightson near Tucson the day before.

I have done this loop a few times, but it's been many years since I have been on this one all the way around.

We met up at 630am and started off in counter-clockwise fashion. Chris was there early as was Brian. I have never hiked with him before. Nice to meet you Brian!

I was a slow-poke going up and a semi slow-poke hiking down from the saddle. Brian had to jet as it's Mother's Day and hiking all day is not a good idea when Mom's need attention. He left us in the dust, but we did see him going down the Pass Mountain Trail as we started down the 2nd saddle.

Chris wanted to add some more miles, so we hiked down the Meridian Mystery Trail for a little while and then turned around.

A few critters, but no snakes :( . There was a little horned toad missing his tail at the Pass Mtn Saddle, lots of doves, a few quail, bunnies and ground squirrels, and the ever present lizards darting up and down and across the trail. Most of the blooms that were so beautiful just a few weeks ago have been roasted. But, I saw quite a few saguaro blooms and even a few barrel cacti blooms too.

A nice 7.5 mile loop with a little elevation gain. The trail on the loop was in good shape. Much better than I remembered for sure. The weather was starting to get a little toasty at the end, but it was very nice starting off. In a month, I would gladly take a day like today.

Thanks for the invite Chris, and it's alway awesome meeting up the HAZers on the trail. Let's hike again soon, Brian.

Brian left his phone in my car after the Wrightson hike. Wally found it when we stopped for cheaper gas on I-10 on the way back. Brian got back to me right away once I PMed him and once I had texted Andy for where to hike on Sunday we had a meetup set up.

I like to always try to hike something new everytime, but since I hike so much now, I've given up and accepted repeat hikes to places close to home. this hike is becoming a recent favorite for the closeness, and quickness with some decent AEG to make it a decent workout.

Brian left us in the dust at the halfway point, and Andy and I slinked back to the starting point. from there we headed east on the Meridian Trail and turned back in time for me to stop and get Radmila floweers for Mother's Day on the way home. Nice to get out and hike before the weather gets too hot.

Early morning hike with Chris and Andy. Kind of unplanned. I had left my phone in Chris’s car after yesterday’s Mt Wrightson hike and needed to pick it up. This misfortune turned into a bonus hike on Sunday. Met up with Chris and Andy at the Meridian TH around 6:30. It’s been years since I’ve hiked from this location.

We opted to do the loop in a CCW direction. The trail on the south side hadn’t changed. Well defined trail with a rocky, moderate incline up to the saddle. Nice views to the north and south. The trail down the north side has gotten quite a bit of use over the years and is now a well beaten path that is easy to follow. Andy was expecting foxtails and bushwhacking and I was anticipating cairn hopping. Wrong. On the south side the trail was numbered 304. Not sure how long we were on that trail for. There was no signage once we passed the initial carsonite marker. If we were not on a designated, we were on a well-used social trail. The trail dropped a little ways, hung close to the slope and then started to climb towards Pass Mountain Trail. Then took Pass Mountain back to the TH. Left Chris and Andy midway through the hike to spend the day with the wife.

Nice to get back to this area. Met about 8 people on the trail. No wildlife. Always great hiking with Chris. Nice meeting and hiking with Andy for the first time.

Wanted to do a short hike close by. This hike foots the bill. The East side of the look doesn't see nearly as much traffic as the Pass Mountain Loop Trail, and is quite a bit shorter, but has great views.

The hike is quite easy to follow. Only ran into two folks on the way final leg of the hike that overlaps with the Pass Mountain Loop (West side of loop).

Peak 3004 loop starting at Medicine Wheel Trailhead. Took northwest route (which is part of the Pass Mountain trial) up to what is marked on Google as bulldog saddle. This is the clockwise route. Smooth sailing up to the saddle as usual but finding the proper trail for the loop was difficult. I first took the obvious trail to the right (East), but that just leads to a huge beehive and a trail that just goes into pure rock scramble. Nope. At least not today. I went back to the trail junction with Pass Mountain and tried to find the trail but the only option was the one I took. I found a little path the broke off that trail and I actually bushwhacked a bit, using the Route scout app and then found a series of rudimentary, functional cairnes probably built by other courageous and smart hikers which actually led me to the legit trail which was a joy. Methinks the actual trail probably has a better beginning but maybe I was just too lazy to look for it??
Anyway, the route was clear and easy, once I found it. It ROUGHLY matches the route marked on the map. This was the "low road" as described in the guide.
This was a winter hike so not a lot of bees but I imagine when the valley blooms it will be full of bees.
The most beautiful part is when you get down into the valley and you are far from everything. It's very peaceful and beautiful. Great hike with no person encountered after turning off the Pass Mountain trail. Next time I'm going to see if I can figure out the "high road", but not from the west saddle, but from the eastern one. :D

Decided this might be a loop to avoid the Black Friday crowds at the popular trails. Turned out pretty good as I only encountered 3 groups of 4 along the way despite the trailhead being packed. Stiff breeze blowing from the north made for occasional grab your hat moment . First time taking this in the clockwise direction which I think I liked better as you end up on a smoother trail at the finish. Was prepared for vegetation on this non maintained route but it was free and clear on this nice uncrowded alternative to pass mountain loop. Now off to do a couple of dog walks as family left town leaving me to carry the poop bags😁

With the weather getting cooler and a Steeler night game, it was time for a Sunday morning hike with the family. This loop works very nicely, close to home, short but enough AEG to make it a decent workout.

The climb up tired out Radmila and Natasha. We took a break at the saddle but were accosted by gnats. On the way down we had some drama. First, Natasha had a cactus needle poke thru the sole of her boot. That took a few minutes to pull out. Then, a few hundred yards later, Radmila fell and hit her knee on a rock. It took a few minutes for her to assess that she could keep going. For a minute it was looking like we might have to cut it short, but after a rest, Radmila was ok.

After that, no other problems. The hike up the other side isn't as steep or rocky, which made things better. There were breezes at the saddles keeping it cool. Not too many people on the Pass Mountain Trail. Finished up without further incident and had a nice lunch at a local sports bar.

Kicked off the Valley hiking season with a local favorite. Gary and Powers joined (and Meia). A little warm but light crowds and beautiful!

Started out on the Bulldog Saddle Trail at 6:30 a.m. Meridian TH was not as busy as expected. Temps were also quite nice. Only saw a handful of people on the way up to the saddle. On the backside, dropping around the based of Peak 3004, I had complete solitude until rising back up to the Pass Mountain saddle, where traffic was more busy.

From the Pass Mountain saddle, I decided to shake things up with a little off-trail ascent up to the peak of Pass Mountain via the spur that juts out west from the Ridgeline towards the saddle. I had wanted to check out this spur several years ago when I did the ridgeline with my kids, but it wasn't in the cards that time.

The climb up from Pass Mountain saddle was not nearly as bush-whacky as I thought it might be. And the views on the way up were rewarding, with ever-expanding vistas, including views of Weaver's Needle in the distance.

I did not have a firm itinerary, but by the time I reached the Pass Mountain Peak (which includes a register and a full-size pair of binoculars), I opted to just follow the Ridgeline south and descend via the Wind Cave trail.

The Ridgeline trail/route is much more defined than when I hiked it with my kids. I was grateful, as it made for much more efficient travel, with less guesswork as to which route I should take.

Upon reaching the southern terminus of Pass Mountain, my descent to the Wind Cave trail was a bit different from what I've taken in the past, but it all leads to the same place.

Once on the Wind Cave trail, the crowds predictably appeared. I trail ran down to the Wind Cave trail and then kept up the pace on the southern side of the Pass Mountain Loop back to my car, as I had overspent my time, and there was a long honey-do list to tackle back at home ....

A great variation on a local favorite to get the weekend off on the right foot.

Nice, quick loop with John and the dogs. Beautiful and quiet on the north side. Ocotillos about ready to bloom and a couple lupine sprouting along the way.

The plan was to hike with John but he got delayed. Did the first part of the loop (counterclockwise) solo and met up with John at the western saddle. Saw only two parties on the way up and had the entire northern portion to myself. Hung out with John and Cruz before we dropped back down together. Definitely busier in that side.

Ocotillos are leafed-out pretty well but not other signs of wildflowers beyond globe mallow so far.

Met Tom near Meridian & Levee and got started around 0800. North on County Line trail, then a short distance on Meridian trail, before taking the pavement north to the end of Meridian. Headed up Bulldog Saddle trail on the eastern half of Peak 3004 Loop. Nice views from here and the trail is pleasant as it winds its way down from the saddle and then west around the north side of the mountain.

Once at Pass Mtn Loop at the next saddle, we headed north around Pass Mtn. Once on the northwest side of Pass Mtn, we found some boulders to sit on for a snack break. After that we headed south to Usery, where there were plenty of other hikers out enjoying the nice day. From the parking area, we headed east on Blevins, then Cat Peaks Pass. South on Spillway, then Ruidoso to finish out the loop.

Great weather today, nice breeze and very clear air. Not much in the way of wildlife. Good to see Tom again, and nice to get some miles in after my last few hikes have been somewhat short.

No evidence of any sort of flowers. Is this season going to be a total bust down in the desert???

Parked in the cell phone lot for the AJ airport, met up with @LindaAnn there who was lured to come along with the promise of different scenery and corny jokes. We entered Usery Park , “sadly” the iron ranger was absent today hopefully not from COVID. Heard a little voice behind me saying something like on your mark ,get set, go ,which distracted me from engaging route scout. The desert vegetation whizzed by and without seeing another soul we reached Bulldog Saddle where there was a gathering with picture taking happening. Paused briefly so I could pontificate about the various landmarks visible, Bulldog this and that mostly, told Linda we needed to get going before this group left plus she was scaring me by looking at the path up to 3108 ridgeline like it was an ice cream sundae, didn’t want to chance adding that one. Some of the saddle group did follow us but only confirmed by looking back once on the Pass Mountain trail, quietest group of 6 ladies I never heard! . We took the lower route to Pass Mountain Loop saddle area and proceeded on the loop trail. Usual nice views on this very clear day, looking over of course Bulldog Canyon toward the Blue Point Bridge. Unfortunately the wildflowers didn’t show up today, I think we saw one Chuparosa with a couple of blooms. Have learned if I throw in a couple of hilarious comments I can keep Linda off balance enough to stay ahead :D Was granted a break at the junction of Maricopa Trail where we went up toward the descent route for the ridgeline trail, took a little while to find some decent boulders to sit on near 2525, we concluded Fountain Hills fountain wasn’t functioning today. Returning to the trail after the break the number of hikers increased as we approached Wind Cave trail head and from then on. Cut through Pass Mountain trail head to get on Blevins now seeing bikers and horses. After the “long steep ascent” up Cats Peak Pass we skipped the summit ,will catch it next time. Easy walking on Spillway and Ruidoso made it possible to admire the Saguaros ,but Linda kept pointing out the doomed ones :( also pointed out the snow visible on the Catalina’s. Observed some nice loops and rolls from the model airplanes as we were exiting. The weather was perfect today, as usual enjoyed Linda’s company , she promised to subject her kids to some humor later.

It had been almost 2 years since I had been on the Ironwood Ridgeline, so I decided that Super Bowl Sunday morning would be a good time to go once again.

Starting from the Meridian TH, we went a short distance on the Bulldog Saddle Trail, and then went east on the Meridian Mystery Trail. After going a ways we went on what is now a decent social trail up to a saddle below the Ironwood Ridgeline. For whatever reason there were a few painted arrows on the social trail, providing a reminder of how close to Phoenix we were.

Once on the ridgeline, we went to the summits of Peak 3108, Temptation Peak, and Peak 3125. Peak 3108 is an easy walkup, but there was a bit of climbing on the other 2 peaks. We descended Peak 3125 to the north and then climbed up to Peak 3163, which is a fun climb.

Then we went off-trail to the west side of Peak 3125, and followed a social trail down to Bulldog Saddle. Instead of going directly back to the TH, we followed the Peak 3004 Loop to the north of Peak 3004 and then up to Pass Mountain Saddle. From there we went back to the TH.

We didn't see anyone on the hike until we got down to Bulldog Saddle. From Pass Mountain Saddle back to the TH we encountered a number of people, which is to be expected on a weekend. A couple of them had boom boxes, but at least there were no painted arrows.

Mid morning start from the end of Meridian Rd. , not too busy for a Friday, passed a couple on the way to Bulldog saddle, encountered two more coming down and after crossing the saddle a Navy vet with Vietnam service, said he prefers the clockwise direction , I’ve only done the loop ccw , saw no one else until arriving at pass mountain loop trail saddle. Pleasant weather cooler when clouds passed by with a breeze and warm otherwise, cloud formations altering the typical sunny day views . Coming down from pass mountain saddle the trail was busier but not bad , saw a man with his little white dog I see almost every time I’m on this trail beginning to think he hikes it every day! Back to the lot didn’t feel finished so strolled down meridian rd a short ways to meridian trail and made an additional loop using Meridian,Spillway ,Ruidoso and County Line trails. Most on this site would consider this loop ,meh. I gleaned from its soft but not deep sandy tread it’s lack of rocks and minimal elevation change that even I could ride a mountain bike on this about 3 mile loop, also a good “nature walk” for my daughter in law and would make a fine jogging trail . Did get passed by 3 mountain bikes and observed some model airplane flying from the airport nearby, no wildlife today.

Another blah cool & breezy day for our last hike of 2020... glad it's over, and frankly, absolutely thrilled the last four years are over!
Missed mileage/AEG goals by 200+ miles and 700+ feet due to a combination of more pain in more places and too many 'just don't feel like hiking' days.
Thankfully a number of those days I mountain biked instead, ending up with 300+ miles and 12K+ AEG more than last year.
Only one specific item of note when comparing this hike to my very similar one in June, other than getting photos of the Bush Fire... On the northern downhill from the saddle we noticed red dots of various sizes on the rocks. At first we thought it was just the natural color of the rocks, but after turning a few rocks over and finding no red spots I realized it was fire retardant. After looking up onto the NE slope of 3004 and seeing the most of the surface was reddish in color, so based on that observation I believe a plane returning from dumping fire retardant on the Bush Fire still had some retardant in its tank and it was dumped on purpose.
After getting home I looked at my photos from mid-June (during theBush Fire) and sure enough, there was NO reddish hue or red spots anywhere. Mystery solved... more-or-less.
