Hiked with a friend, doing this loop counterclockwise and starting from the Oracle Ridge TH. My plan was to start at Red Ridge TH, but when I arrived there was a "CLOSED" sign ](*,) even though I carefully checked the USFS Catalina District website and they showed that both Red Ridge & Oracle Ridge trails were OPEN. I drove back to Palisades to speak to someone in that office, and her response was "yeah, I show that trail as open as well, but the Forest Services does a TERRIBLE job of communicating." She called someone at the Forest Service she knew in Sabino Canyon, who had the same response, so she said it was my call but to not worry about it, if the USFS really wanted it closed they should communicate it to the rangers and on the website. She also said that she has heard of the public up there taking the closure signs and moving them around to other trailheads? When I asked why, she said "I guess people are just being mischievous." : app :

To avoid further confusion I decided to start at Oracle Ridge TH, but there is no real parking at Oracle Ridge TH currently, it's now all marked off as "no parking". I spoke to someone a guy at the fire station, who told me to park in the small dirt space across from the fire station however, in one of the "no parking" areas and that it was fine.

I must say, that the crazy amounts of monsoon rain, the ground instability caused by the fires and the apparent fact that no one has done anything to maintain these trails, has definitely made these trails more challenging. Experienced hikers can generally keep up with the trail and a GPS helps at times when it seems to disappear, but you're basically hiking a ridge each way with an abandoned road at the bottom to connect them. The wildflowers, buffelgrass and other plants and weeds were THICK, and usually waist high but at times head high. You really have to be careful in it with your footing, as you can't easily see what you're stepping on, and if there is a critter in the weeds or if the ground is deteriorated under the weeds and unstable. At one point I did almost walk on a black rattlesnake, thankfully he shook his rattle one quick time to cause me to freeze until I figured out it was a rattler and where exactly he was.

I was also surprised to see the mining or excavating, whatever that was they were doing on Marble Peak. That peak is pretty torn up now, they have cut switchback roads all the way up it and even turned part of the Arizona Trail/Oracle Ridge Trail into parts of their highway. Noises from the excavating rang through the canyon between us as we passed by and you could see the heavy machinery doing their think up there.

Catalina Camp Trail was also choked out with waist and head-high growth, and at one spot there has been a washout that makes it a little challenge though not impossible to pass. What an amazing spot the camp cabin is! I walked up and took a peek around, even inside the cabin, and was surprised to see that it looks like it is still being used by someone, there was even a sleeping bag on the bed and other supplies along the edges of the cabin as if it has been recently used. I post pictures here of it. The chandelier in there is just priceless! :app: The creek was flowing well at the junction of Catalina Camp and Red Ridge, a few gallons per minute still and no stagnation. It was a very nice break spot.

Of the three trails, actually Red Ridge is by far in the best shape, which made me scratch my head again why that sign was at the trailhead. There was a small tree down over this trail just above the creek (where you pick up Red Ridge to go back up), and of course the closer you got to the top, the amount of wildflowers choked out even this trail in spots, but for the most part it was actually pretty decent and much easier to follow.

I really hope the Forestry Service finds away to put more time and attention into the Catalina trails. The more time passes, the worst shape they are getting into. I would suspect the Oracle Ridge Trail would be managed by an AZT trail steward, and I'm not sure why that's not happening right now, but so many of the USFS managed trails in the Catalinas just are closed and unattended, and having no one routinely walking on them is making a bad problem worse. There, that's my :SB: !

parked at red ridge TH and did the road segment down to oracle ridge first. oracle ridge is about as i remember it, everything mostly burned, but it has been that way for a long time. dusty and rocky. catalina camp trail is really getting overgrown. no real burn damage though. the camp is in good shape and the cabin perseveres. had a nice break there.

red ridge is a steep climb. it is mostly burned, especially the upper part. the trail itself is in good shape though.

although this hike is mostly (but not all) through burn, i still enjoyed it.

I few months ago I came up with idea of doing a "circumnavigation of Mount Lemmon". I needed some miles, so decided to make an attempt on a late June weekend. Maybe it was a bit brash to try such a route during the summer months.

The goal was to start at Butterfly TH, go down to Crystal Springs trail, up the Oracle Control Road, down Oracle Ridge to Dan Saddle and then down to Catalina Camp, then down to CDO, up to Samaniego Ridge and then Lemmon Trail, then head down to WoR, back across Marshall Saddle, and connect with Sunset to finish the loop. A solid loop if I do say so myself, probably pretty close to a marathon with 6000+ feet of ascent.

The plan held up until Catalina Camp, where it started to get warm, and I really started to question whether I had it in me. This was the last bail-out point, and I took it. Luckily there was a trickle in the creek, so I was able to fill up before heading up Red Ridge (the first time I've had the, let's call it a privilege, of seeing this trail in the uphill direction). Surprisingly, I saw three other people on Catalina Camp and Red Ridge trails. Thought I was the only one stupid enough to be down there in late June.

When I got to Red Ridge, clouds had rolled in, and I was feeling much more alive. So I added a few miles back on by heading up the road to the ski resort, and heading down Aspen Draw (where it even sprinkled a little bit!), before taking a Mint Springs to Marshall Saddle detour.

Ended up a pretty good outing still, even if the whole circumnavigation has to wait until another (possibly cooler) day.

Another research and elevation training trip in the Catalinas. Really liking this area and the drive down isnt even that bad, either. Wanting to explore some new areas, I brought Sanchez with me this time. Right when we parked the Jeep near the Red Ridge trailhead, we saw several deer so we knew it was going to be a great hike. We started down the Oracle Ridge trail where the views were great due to the high visibility of the day. I am always so surprised how lush the Catalinas can be. We started bear singing just in case. Sanchez had no interest in hitting the Pinal high point, though we were so close, so we just went down the hill at the saddle and to the old camp. Not sure how long ago there were operations here, but there was a lot of equipment down there. The cabin was in good shape and it had some cool features, like a sun deck, a BBQ grill, and even a squatter. The hike up Red Ridge was fairly smooth as it was a long hike back up to the top so the grade was easy going. Seems like there is a lot more to explore out here.. would like to do the whole front range soon.

This was part 2 of the hike we did in February doing the lower half of this trail. Last time we hiked from Oracle all the way up to Rice Peak and back down. This time, we started from the upper TH at Summerhaven on top of Mt. Lemmon and walked down to the base of Rice Peak. I had originally thought this upper section would be a total distance of 11 to 12 miles. It would really only be barely 10. So I had the idea of trying to hike down to Catalina Camp and to the junction of the Red Ridge Trail. We decided to go to Rice Peak first and then on our way back up, we would decide at Dan's Saddle whether or not to lose another 900' of elevation before having to climb back up 2000' to get back to the car. We had lunch just before Dan's Saddle, made our assessment, and decided to go for it. I had 3.5 liters of water left, which was right at the limit of what I was comfortable with. We ended up a quarter of a mile short of the junction when we decided to head back up. The temperature was getting noticeable warmer as we descended, and the trail was pretty steep and gnarly in sections as it went past the Catalina Camp. I ended up running out of water a half mile from the TH, so it was a good call.

At the start of the hike we kicked out about 5 deer below the trail that ran over the ridge and out of sight. We kicked a few more out as we hiked along the trail, and I was thinking they might have been the same deer. At one point there were two above the trail running through the trees. The must have been yearlings because their coats were still kind of spotty. Every time we saw them, they ran like crazy and wouldn't stop. I mentioned to Wally that they really seemed spooked and he brought up the fact that this is mountain lion country. Oh yeah. I was never able to get any pictures because by the time my camera was out, turned on and focused, they were gone.

The climb back up from Catalina Camp was a bit of a slog. Going up from Catalina Camp to Dan's Saddle seemed a lot harder than from the saddle back to the car, even though the AEG for both is roughly the same. Luckily, as we ascended, clouds came rolling in, giving us some shade and breezes. I think if the sun would have been hitting us directly, I would have run out of water a lot sooner.

On our way home, there were some very dark storm clouds rolling in from the southeast. Hopefully that's a sign of the monsoon arriving soon. Lots of clouds in the sky in Tucson as we left, none at all in Phoenix.

Saw 2 other hikers all day, who looked so similar that I thought it was the same guy doing an out and back hike. Nice to get this trail completed and mark off another hike in the 100 Classic Hikes in AZ book.

catalina camp trail is a little overgrown but fine. the camp is in pretty good shape.

red ridge is a great trail, even provides some shade for the sharp ascent.

great loop as always.

I wanted to hike CDO again, but with a few changes from the Red Ridge loop we did last year. We travelled down Oracle Ridge and also started from the top of Lemmon, taking care of Aspen Draw and the road at the beginning.

Oracle Ridge was great in the cool morning weather. Catalina Camp is just as amusing a trip as I remember it being last year. There was water near the trail from the CC/RR junction all the way to the homestretch of the CDO trail. Since I finally remembered to bring a filter, we were able to refill our water a few times (I easily finished 4 liters and a big gatorade). Cooling down in the water made a big difference too.

Now for the whining: wear long pants. The trails are easy enough to follow, but my shins and knees got pretty torn up in the overgrowth - especially above 6k on CDO and in the burnt-out portions of Sutherland. That being said, CDO is gorgeous from all the recent rains and it was still worth the annoyance. There's a lot of climbing to do in the final miles of this hike, but my CO trip left my legs in good shape, so nearly all of my ranting was at the overgrown trails.

This was a little expansion on the Red Ridge/Canada del Oro Loop. Parked at the very top of Lemmon and took Aspen Draw down to the road, and then the road down to Oracle Ridge. With all the recent rain, everything out there was delightfully green. At Catalina Camp someone had fittingly left a paperback copy of the eating-your-pals-in-the-mountains classic "Alive".

The highlight of the day for me came a bit later, out on the northern leg of Red Ridge Trail, where the views of Reef of Rock are just awesome :worthy:

The first few miles of Canada del Oro were a nice stroll through an exceptionally wide riparian strip. Later on things became a bit tedious, with tricky path-finding, scruggley overgrowth, and loads of buggos. I don't recall it being quite as bad last year. By the time we made it out of the canyon, I had this annoying headache going (don't know why because my legs and lungs felt good and I was drinking plenty of water!) which kept me from really enjoying the cool, sunny afternoon and beautiful pine forests :stretch:

Still, a good day and a grand loop!

Sweet lollipop route: up OR#1 to Dan Saddle > west down CC#401 > up RR#2 > road walk east to upper trailhead and back down Oracle Ridge. Single track trail sections are in good condition, dirt road sections are decent. Plenty of clear, cold flow in East Fork creek at the CC#401 / RR#2 junction.

Started a little before noon down the Red Ridge Trail. We took a little detour to the Catalina Camp, which I'd never visited (I took the liberty of tinkering with the mileage and AEG; hopefully that's kosher...). The lower sections of the loop were pretty warm, but since you don't have to climb much, it wasn't too bad.

The CDO trail is terrific. If it was more easily accessible, it would be as popular as any trail in southern AZ. It must be amazing to hike this in autumn. The route finding is easy for the most part. It disappeared a few times around 3-5 miles up the canyon, but the path-of-least-resistance put us back on the trail each of those times. A couple places before the switchbacks are pretty overgrown. The final climb out of the canyon to the Samaniego Ridge trail is really fun ;)

Aspen Draw Trail at sunset (with no mountain bikers) was a great way to end this hike.

This is a tough hike for July. I brought over a gallon and a half of water and Gatorade, and that wound up being just enough. 2 gallons and/or a purification system would probably be smart in this heat.

Oracle Ridge - Catalina Camp - Red Ridge Loop. The Oracle Ridge Trail was great - ferns and flowers at the start and big views as usual. In just a spot or two the small Arizona Trail sections that bypass the road the trail was a little indistinct - but never hard to follow. On Catalina Camp I lost the wind an it was a bit hot. The real surprise for me was that when we arrived at the East Fork of the CDO there was flowing water! Red Ridge was just as steep as ever...

Sirena and I decided it was time that I knocked the CDO off my "to-do" list - and the promise of post-monsoon lushness made early-September the perfect time. We threw our packs on and spent two glorious days down on the northern slopes of the Santa Catalinas, and I was not disappointed by the beauty and rugged isolation of this canyon. It has definitely seen the brunt of the devastation from the fires and their resulting floods - and there is a good bit of route finding that must be done to keep track of the trail tread. However, if you keep your eyes open and your skills sharp, you should have no trouble.

We brought Lilo, trail dog extraordinaire, as well. She gave the whole experience a definite paws up...

Good loop trail to cover the top of Mount lemmon and the major trails on the north side of the mountain. Oracle ridge down to Dan Saddle is easy to follow and pretty much all downhill. Good views to the north and and east and to the west of Red Ridge and the Reef of Rocks. Once at the Dan Saddle, the Catalina Camp Trail #401 heads west and down toward the Hartman Mine and Canada Del Oro Trail. The Red Ridge Trail heads back up to Mount Lemmon near the Hartman Mine. The east fork of Canada Del Oro runs in close proximity to this trail once past the Red Ridge Trail junction. There is usually water in this in spring. There were no issues following this trail. The Canada Del Oro Trail heads north up Canada del Oro Canyon and follows along the creek until about the last mile where it climbs the west side of the creek to a saddle. The Canada Del Oro Trail was easy to follow with the exception of the very lower parts were the brush and ferns were so thick that it made the trail hard to see. I had no problems with losing the trail though. Be careful of snakes along this portion. From the saddle the trail meets up with Sananiego Ridge Trail and continues on a good climb to the Southerland Trail. from here the trail continues to climb to the Mount Lemmon Trail. Trail is in good condition but a bit steep. Once on the Mount Lemmon Trail it is fairly level walking to Radio Ridge over Summerhaven. I continued on down a road to Summerhaven and back to the Oracle Ridge trail head. This is a good trail to take in late spring when the snows have melted and the streams are running.

We started out around 8:30 on the Oracle Ridge Trail. Not my favorite trail, very rocky and slippery on the way down with lots of painful sticker bushes. We then connected down to Catalina Camp and hung out at the cabin for a bit. Someone named "Dr. Daisy" fixed the place up a lot, especially the outside. According to the sign-in sheet he will be back over the winter making improvements. We then headed down the steep lower portion of the Red Ridge trail which got a little confusing towards the intersection of Canada Del Oro. We got turned around a bit but climbed some rocks and found the trail. After that it was a gradual incline up the beautiful Canada Del Oro canyon. Lots of water and fall colors. At the end of the canyon it was a few short but steep switchbacks up to the Samaniego Trail which we were able to find Shovel Springs, which was clear and plentiful. Up, up and up the to the Sutherland Trail then finally up the Mt Lemmon road (which is always lots of fun after hiking all day :? ) We got up around 6:30 and were hoping The Sawmill was open for a burger but they must of just closed.

Great hike, got home and passed out! :FG:

Started at the Oracle Ridge Trailhead near the top of the Control Road and made a loop from Oracle Ridge Trail, Catalina Camp Trail, Red Ridge Trail and a little walking on the road at the end to get back to the car.

Oracle Ridge - it has been ?8 years since I have been on this trail, I didn't expect much but I have to say that the section down to the Catalina Camp Trail junction was lovely! Grass, flowers, nice views - really enjoyed this!

Catalina Camp Trail - we had not been on this trail before and I can not say that I found it tremendously exciting but certainly the Catalina Camp area is worth visiting (at least once anyway).

Red Ridge - The stream just beyond the junction was flowing quietly, great spot for a break. What a spectacular trail - so much more pleasant than when I was last on the trail in 2007 (my memory is that in 2007 the trail was easy to follow but that it was massively overgrown and sections were absurdly prickly walking - not that there are not spots now that could maybe use a bit of maintenance... but it seems pretty pleasant now!). I guess I was in the mood for some uphill and enjoyed the fairly direct route of the trail and the variety of the terrain!

Worth noting that it was pretty hot day for this loop (imho) and Red Ridge would not have been nearly as pleasant without some lucky clouds and wind (and Oracle Ridge Trail/Catalina Camp Trail later in the day would have been scorchers) - there are patches of good shade, but certainly strenuous sections of trail that are very exposed to the sun, certainly even this high on the mountain check the temperature/use caution...

It was nice to hit new-to-me trails in the Catalina's. I loved the view of Reef of Rock from the Oracle Ridge trail.

Catalina Camp was interesting. We checked out the mine in which we saw lots of flies and a bat. Down at the camp,we checked out the cabin. That chandelier and stained glass window is odd! We also found a claim documented from May of 2003. Strange to see such recent history.

The area down below the camp looked like backpacker paradise. The creek was flowing and lots of flat areas for tents.

The hike out Red Ridge wasn't so fun as things had started to heat up. I ended up feeling kinda bad so it took me longer than the rest of the group to climb out. On the way out I nearly stepped on a tiny rattlesnake! My first one of the season. He was in a small shday area and was hard to see. We'll see if I got any decent pictures of him...

We then completed the loop on the road.

The trails were remarkably clear and easy to follow. Thank you to the trail maintenance crew!
