I told Wally I would meet him at First Water TH. When I left 10 min earlier than I expected, I texted him and told him I would start without him if I got there first. At the end of Brown/Lost Dutchman Road before 88, I saw him speeding by on 88. I figured I might catch him on First Water Road, but he was even faster there. Looks like he can drive fast when he wants to  .

did the loop counter clockwise heading out on Second Water Trail first. I kicked out a javelina on the descent into Boulder Canyon. It was a little startling as it remained still until I was about 6 feet away and then it bolted across the trail right in front of me. It made it up the the hill in what looked effortless, across all the loose volcanic rock.

Wally pointed out some interesting spots he knew about on the way down to Boulder Canyon, which was cool to learn about. Boulder Canyon was nothing major and then we headed up Calvary Trail. On the east side Wally pointed out where he discovered ruins on previous expeditions, and I got zoomed in pics the best I could.

On the LDT to Bull Pass we saw 2 deer, I got a few nice shots. Bull Pass was a bit of a slog and then downhill wasn't worse, but was slower with steep grades and loose rock.

Finished in 7.5 hours, with no lunch break. I didn't feel too beat but navigating over the rocky trails on the last mile was a bit more of an effort than usual. Saw 5 hikers total all day. It was little warm at the end but still not too hot to make this harder than it would normally be.

The real heat hasn't started just yet but when Chris mentioned Marsh Valley Loop I was thinking of a plan B if it got too hot. We started early and is was still nice and cool. There was even shade in Boulder Canyon for much of the way so I knew it would be good to finish the entire hike.

There was one hiker that hiked Battleship. Het passed us on the way in but I got back to the trailhead about 6 minutes before him. He said he spent a lot of time trail finding.

The trails were easy to follow. The burned out sections of Cavalry trail were open for the most part but there was some downed brush to hike around. It didn't really warm up until we hit Dutchman trail.

We saw fuana on this trip. A javelina, two deer, a rat, squirrels, a hawk and the circling vultures.
I rested a few times in the shade but once the shade disappeared I kept moving. Not a lot of hikers out but it was a nice day. I still had water left at the end. It was still frozen or I would have drank it.

Was eyeing a Meetup for Marsh Valley Loop. However, the numbers scared peeps away and the event was cancelled. I was then able to convince 2 friends to do this plus the high point. 😎

Met 1 not far from me at 7. Start hike at 8:30. So we did the Black Top Mesa outing. There is no sign for Bull Pass and is a bit out of the way to find. This is where it gets steep & rocky. The use trail from there has cairns along the path. Was surprised to see 1 other hiker descending from the high point.

Instead of going back the way we came, we looped it. Props to @trekkin_gecko as his triplog inspired this outing. Much of this route is chill but at the end u have to climb back out 2nd Water. 🫤

I decided to make a trip to the Supes while the water is still there. At first I thought it was already gone because when I crossed First Water Creek along the Second Water Trail, it was dry there. But as you get deeper in, the streams are still running.

Started out with the Black Mesa loop, but this time I did it clockwise, taking the Black Mesa Trail first and heading east. To my memory, this was the first time i've ever hiked the Black Mesa Trail in that direction.

Once i got to the junction with the Dutchman, I headed further east on that and then took the Bull Pass Trail up, then took the Lost Black Mesa Trail further east until it hit the Dutchman Trail again. The Lost Black Mesa Trail is now very faint and overgrown in several spots. I hiked this once 11 years ago and I don't remember it being this bad. It's not a total bushwhack yet, but it's getting there. It was rather slow going along this spot of the hike.

From the Dutchman Trail, I headed north and then headed back on the Bull Pass Trail. Saw a backpacker taking a break at that junction, first hiker I saw for the day. Once I got back to the east end of the Black Mesa Loop, I took a lunch break. 2 horse riders went by. When they saw me, the first guy said, "We're on the right trail". then 10 minutes later they were doubling back asking how to get to the Black Mesa Trail. Turns out they were on the wrong trail.

Most of the foot traffic was on the way back on the Dutchman Trail. The first hikers I saw were an old couple, also asking about how to get to the Black Mesa Trail. they had accents and when they spoke to one another it was in a Slavic language. I asked if they were Serbs. They were Polish. I'm half Polish so we talked a bit about that. 5 min after we left I forgot the only phrase I know in Polish that means "how are you". This is the 2nd time this has happened to me while hiking, I need to work on that.

The last bit along the Dutchman Trail was a bit of a slog at the end. my minutes per mile was getting longer, but I felt like I was still moving pretty good. I looked at my GPS tracks and I did this same hike basically 11 years ago, but I added the summit to Black Top Mesa, which I couldn't imagine doing today for one hike. The Lost Black Top Mesa Trail was in better shape, but I was a decade younger too, so there's that.

A little chilly to start but it never got hot. Perfect weather, which will be gone soon enough until late October.

Added bonus of a great motorcycle ride of the Apache Trail on a perfect weather, not too busy afternoon. One of the recent forums (can't find exact link), there was a debate about biking SR 88. On a weekday, this just might work between these two trailheads, but below Tortilla Flat to the marina would be iffy. Aren't some of those snowbirds drinking alcohol with their meals? :-k

My intention on this hike was to hike to Peak 2900, which is a bit northwest of Marsh Valley. From the First Water TH, my plan was to take the Dutchman Trail to the Bull Pass Trail to the Dutchman Trail (again) to the Cavalry Trail. After hiking north on the Cavalry Trail for a bit I would then go off-trail to the west to the peak.
However, I got a late start and several sections of the Dutchman Trail and Bull Pass Trail were in terrible shape, which slowed me down. By the time I was ready to start going off-trail up to the peak, it was later than i wanted so I decided to cut my losses and head back.

So this wound up being an out-and-back hike on some heavily eroded sections of trail. At times it was more like hiking in a ditch instead of a trail, and there were sections with lots of loose, rubbly rock.

The trails were in such poor shape that I didn't care for this hike very much. I think that I will use my time and energy for something other than hiking up to Peak 2900.

Hike to Black Top Mesa incorporating the Black Mesa Loop in a clockwise direction. Passed Wally just after leaving the trailhead. That’s twice in a week! :y:

1145 start. Slept in. Got caught up in a good book before getting off my duff and and out to the trailhead. That probably worked out better, though; it was chilly and a bit hazy this morning. It was gorgeous in the afternoon.

Pressed for time, I didn’t take a break until Bull Pass. I debated turning around there, but decided I could get to the top and finish before darkness set in. Proceeded up to the top for those special views. Headed over to the SE corner to check out the petroglyphs, but the light wasn’t right. I couldn’t see anything. Returned to Bull Pass and took a second break for a very late lunch before returning to the trailhead on Dutchman.

Finished a few minutes after five and was rewarded with a spectacular sunset on the drive home. Great day on the trails on a gorgeous afternoon.

Completed as a hybrid loopy out and back integrating the Peralta Trail circus, two obscure and somewhat lame bypass routes (regular trails are better) and a neat razor ridgeline traverse to a peak. It probably would have been an honor to hike with syoung when he was with us, but requiescat in pace good sir!

Decided to head back out into the Supes to take advantage of decent weather and lots of water. Started out on Dutchman. All the creeks are flowing. Headed up and over Bull Pass, which I've only been over once; had to get the feet wet at the Needle Canyon crossing. Would like to take Needle down to Boulder sometime...

North on Cavalry through Marsh Valley; saw some horse campers and lots of backpackers heading in. Took a break at Boulder; saw a couple of runners which provided some motivation to pick up the pace a little.

Rest of the way was a little uneventful, although we did see a gila monster on Dutchman.

Got started a little later than planned, around 0900. Muddy, with lots of water flowing, and snow just above. Headed east on Second Water Trail, and by the time I turned onto Black Mesa Trail, I was in the snow. Lots of fresh animal tracks. Made my way over to Bull Pass trail then up to Black Top Mesa. Lots of snow up there, making for slower travel on the trail. Great views from the top. Slippery descent, then continued east. Cavalry trail had lots of mud in places. Tons of water crossings on Cavalry and Boulder Canyon. Second Water was muddy. Saw my first hikers of the day near Garden Valley. Temps stayed in the upper 30s—mid 40s all day.

We started from First Water Trailhead just after sunrise on a chilly morning in the mid-30s. As we finished packing up to get on the trail, I could've sworn I saw the guy from Legend of the Superstition Mountains pull up and get out of a blue truck. Should've asked him for some gold-hunting tips...

We saw a few groups of hikers and campers on the trails early on, but the crowds thinned out quickly as we approached Parker Pass. All the water crossings had a steady flow of water, which was nice to see, and was a good sign for Needle Canyon later. The morning warmed up quickly once the sun cleared the mountains, though I had an early, hard-hitting collision with a barrel cactus hiding in some shadows while the sun was in my eyes that left spines embedded deep in my calf and a resulted in a steady flow of blood running down onto my boot.

Boulder Canyon Trail was fairly overgrown with catclaw in places, but we were only on the trail for less than a mile before turning east into Needle Canyon. This was our first time through there, and it was a really pleasant place to spend part of the day. From the beginning, there were plenty of deep pools, small waterfalls, and the constant sounds of the creek. Going through the canyon while trying to stay dry slowed things down a little...we spent a lot of time on the banks navigating through catclaw to get around some of the deeper pools, and the clippers got a good workout during that segment of the hike.

[ youtube video ]

The western part of the canyon has a lot more bends and turns than the east side and was also rockier, with more falls and pools. If we had more time, I wanted to leave the creek bed and hike up to Hill 2769 in Red Hills, but we still had a lot of miles to cover, so that I saved that for another day. By the time we got back on a trail, we'd covered just under three miles in the canyon from the entrance off of Boulder Canyon to the exit onto Bull Pass, and we'd managed to stay dry but certainly not scratch-free.

We decided to take a longer route back via Dutchman around Black Top Mesa and through East Boulder Canyon. As it turned out, taking the long route back might not've been the best decision...the barrel cactus pokes hadn't bothered me much up to that point, but as we left Needle Canyon, the leg started to tighten up with some swelling that made it painful to bend or straighten my leg...both of which are important for walking :). And so I ended up limping through the last eight miles...I've had plenty of run-ins with cacti over the years, but the delayed reaction was unusual, and this was by far the most painful I've had to deal with.

But the scenery in East Boulder Canyon was worth it. We took a food break near the creek, then paused briefly at Caballo Camp to check out some of the inscriptions (and graffiti) that we'd never paid much attention to on previous visits. We passed a few more groups along Dutchman on the hike out and finished just before sunset. A very enjoyable day in the Superstitions except for the cactus stabbing, which only felt worse after tightening up in the car on the way home. I realized I hadn't had a tetanus booster in a long time, so I got one the next day. I guess there's a certain irony that a hike to Needle Canyon led to a shot...

Dese's Bday month hike, which is likely the longest of her nine year life so far. It's also the first time she's summited two in a day! Boulder Canyon is a series of hundreds of clear swimming pools currently. The crossings were still manageable without getting wet, but there's evidence it had flashed significantly. This seems to have made the route easier to follow, in addition to all the trail work that's been completed recently. It's greatly appreciated! :app:

haven't been out in the supes in a long time
this hike was on our list of possibilities
after negotiating a detour on lost dutchman road, we got going around 0715
temps right around 40 to start
did the loop clockwise
second water, boulder canyon, cavalry
instead of circling black top mesa on dutchman trail, we took bull pass to the saddle and then to the summit
one of my favorite spots in the superstitions for great views, especially of weaver's needle
we took a snack break and then john persevered in finding the sun petroglyph on the east side
finished the loop on dutchman trail
temps in upper 60s as we finished
not many people on the trails at all
water in boulder canyon and from recent rains in several other places
nice to be back in the supes with good company
thanks, john - good times

Neither one of us has hiked in the Supes recently, so it was time. We did a clockwise variation of the Marsh Valley loop ascending Black Top Mesa for extra credit.
A bit chilly at the start. Some frost here and there. Things warmed up after an hour or so resulting in excellent conditions for hiking.
Trails are in pretty good shape. Less vegetation than expected. Still damp from the rain last week.
The scenery is always good here, Black Top Mesa topping things off with great views all around.
We didn't see many people and no horses, just lots of reminders they frequent the trails.
Fun hike. Thanks gecko! :)

Decided it was a nice day to cover some miles in the Western Superstitions. Only a few cars at the First Water TH when we arrived at zero dark thirty so we waited a few minutes before gearing up. The plan was to hike out Dutchman, up Bull Pass, then pick up Dutchman in the reverse direction, have a snack near Terrapin, which was about the halfway point of the loop, then finish the loop up Black Mesa and sail back to the TH via Second Water. We hit Terrapin sooner than we thought so I proposed a few extra miles walking up Needle Canyon. Ended up boulder hopping close to a mile, staying mostly in the canyon, but did pop out a few times to check some benches. Found one old campsite with 2 shovel heads nearby and an old glove under the nearby tree. Maybe one of Al Morrows camps?? Took our snack break near the camp then backtracked down canyon where we located the Terrapin crossing and continued with the loop.

Great day, few hikers seen, beautiful fall weather.

My somewhat inexperienced hiking friend (who’s actually a pretty good hiker) was wanting something to fill out the entire morning. I suggested Black Top Mesa & Loop, with the option of shortening the hike to just the loop. Got started around 0630 and headed out on Second Water trail. South on Black Mesa trail, where there was one group of campers.

Another group of campers at the Black Mesa/Dutchman jct, where we headed east, then up Bull Pass, then up to Black Top Mesa. Lots of grass along the trail up there, where right on cue, a rattler surprised us. It was well hidden in the grass right on the side of the trail, a little too close for comfort. While Jill was deciding whether to faint or run, I took some pics and poked at it with a pole to encourage it to move away from the trail so we wouldn’t have to deal with it on our way back out. After I assured Jill she would survive, we took a break at the top and enjoyed the views.

Once back down, we headed back on Dutchman. By far the most boring part of the loop, as usual. Saw some hikers, but not as many as I thought there might be on a Saturday. Warm the last couple of miles. Nice day for this one, but I’m glad it wasn’t any warmer.
