1st trip
Was invited to join some friends for a weekend in Chiracahua National Monument. Left the valley, nervously checking and refreshing the weather report, which had been calling for rain for the evening and following day. It seems my luck held out with regards to the weather - while we saw some rain activity from the clouds on the drive, we arrived to scattered clouds and slightly damp ground in the campground. We set up camp under the supervision of a group of mexican jays and relaxed for a bit before prepping dinner. Stayed up late to look at the sky and try to take some nighttime photos. May have heard some coati, but didn't get an actual sighting.

Originally, I had planned on a potential solo hike stringing together nearly all of the established trails in the park from the campground. One of my friends expressed interest in joining me, but wasn't up for the full distance, and also is not an early riser. Another friend in the group offered to ferry us up to Massai Point, allowing us to trim the mileage and hike mostly downhill back to the campground.

Got up early to the sounds of the mexican jays making the rounds, hoping to mooch some breakfast treats. Saw some white-tailed deer wandering nearby while most of the others in the campground were still sleeping. Eventually made it up to Massai Point to start our hike. The parking area had a number of cars and a decent number of folk milling about. Opted to walk the Nature Trail and enjoy the interpretive signs and exhibit building before doubling back to start down the Ed Riggs Trail. Once we started heading down the trail, we lost most of the other traffic. The walking was slow going with all the beautiful views. Many photos were taken, but few were able to capture the landscape well. If it wasn't photos of the landscape, it was photos of wildflowers slowing me down 😆 thanks to the recent moisture, there were also plenty of mushrooms to photograph in the latter portion of the hike. We had a brief scare when we stumbled across a danger noodle mid-brunch trailside. We gave it as much space as we could as we skirted by, and warned a few returning groups of hikers to be aware as we crossed paths.

As you might expect, the trails are very well established and clearly signed. I was surprised to hear and see water flowing in the drainages along the upper reaches of the hike since there wasn't any observable water in the watercourses near the visitors center or campground. We managed to startle a white-tailed deer as we crossed Hunt Canyon on the Mushroom Rock trail on our way towards Inspiration Point. Sadly, all I got was a very heavily obscured photo of a deer butt as it headed into the shrubs along the creekside.

After checking the time, we decided to head out to inspiration point, where we enjoyed watching a kettle of turkey vultures playing in the thermals while we took a break and had a snack before continuing on to the Big Balanced Rock Trail and the Heart of Rocks Loop. After slowing considerably going through the Heart of Rocks area, we attempted to pick up our pace along the Sarah Deming Trail, but were thwarted by numerous varieties of mushrooms. We eventually hit the Lower Rhyolite trail, enjoyed the sunset, and broke out our headlamps to finish the last bit of the descent to the visitors center where we took a brief break to use the facilities before heading back to camp.

After cleaning up and enjoying dinner, me and my hiking partner for the day decided to head back up to Massai Point for some more night-sky viewing. We were the only ones up there and arrived just in time to catch the moon heading fast for the horizon. We were able to catch some photos of the milky way (I wish I had brought a proper camera), in addition to some distant lightning. As we started getting chilled from the dropping nighttime temps, we headed back to camp - catching sight of a ringtail along the way (unfortunately, I didn't have the presence of mind to try to catch a photo of it).

It was a fantastic day, with plenty of puffy clouds in the sky that cleared out for a great night of stargazing.

Other people: only had one person (a trail runner) lap us, but we also had a ridiculously late start. All of the other groups (several) we encountered were returning to Massai Point on the Ed Riggs trail.

The Bonita Campground restrooms were undergoing repair/construction when we visited - original completion date was estimated to be October 1st, but with ongoing shutdown the closure has been extended to an unknown date. Portable toilets and handwashing stations were available, and at the time of our visit, the toilets were pumped out and cleaned on Monday morning. The visitors center restrooms remained open and available during our stay - it's a relatively quick walk between the campground and the visitors center via the Silver Spur Meadow Trail or via the road. During daylight hours, I walked the trail - after dark, I opted to walk the road for easier footing.

1st trip
Day three of four in SE AZ.
This, our first hike on our second day in the Chiricahua National Monument, will be the longest in mileage and time as well as the most AEG of all 6 hikes we will do on this trip to SE AZ. While it was expected to require the most effort, in the end it didn't feel like it at all. And even for the effort we put forth, it returned a very enjoyable hike including a wider variety of scenery than we'd encountered in the Chiricahua or Dragoon Mountains.

We had such an easy descent the first half-mile down Echo Canyon I didn't experience the usual hip joint pain and by time we hit the steeper descent I had loosened up enough as long as I was careful on the larger step-downs things went well.

Just past the grottoes we caught up to a recently retired couple from South Carolina taking their first trip to AZ in years, and possibly thinking about moving 'back here' as they were originally from Arizona and moved to SC some 2 dozen years ago. Once the pleasantries were exchanged we moved on.

When we reached the sign denoting 'Echo Canyon' (at the confluence of Sarah Deming, Rhyolite and Echo Canyons) I loudly yelled 'Hello' which got a quick response from Tracey of 'what are you yelling for?' To which I responded, what is the point of an echo canyon if one doesn't take advantage of it... at least to verify it is worthy of the name.

Moving on, after 'turning the corner' we headed up Upper Rhyolite Canyon, connecting with the Hailstone Trail which we will follow until the junction with Ed Riggs and Mushroom Rock Trails. At that point we continued up Mushroom Rock Trail until reaching the Mushroom Rock, Inspiration Point and Big Balanced Rock Trails junction. From there we did a round-trip to Inspiration Point... which was a slight let-down in more ways than one. First, after experiencing so much of the park already no particular 'inspiration' came to mind. Second, due to all the rock spires there was no single point where one could see directly down into the canyons below. Sure one could look ACROSS the canyons, of which the views were scenic.

Once back on the Mushroom Rock Trail we had a reasonably easy descent in preparation for the steep ascent up Ed Riggs Trail to our planned turn at the Massai Point Trail. Once we reached that junction, we took a few moments to decide whether to head over to Massai Point or continue up to the Echo Canyon trailhead. Thinking the route to Massai Point was a simple 'around the contour' we chose it. And then of course it turned out to be a 200' climb to the Exhibit Building.

At the Exhibit Building we took the time to read all the various panels covering geological and human history.

Decision time again:
#1. Back DOWN Massai Trail to experience the steep ascent up the end of Ed Riggs Trail to Echo Canyon TH.
#2. Short road-walk to Echo Canyon TH.
Since we were about to eat lunch at the car before tackling Sugarloaf Mountain, it was an easy decision... we've had enough AEG for this hike so we went with #2.

Ambient Temps: 64-75°
HR Avg/Max = 95/133

The shuttle service is back up and running, the trails are now free of ice and the rock slides have been cleaned up ... time for a hoodoo hike!
Shuttle picked us up at Faraway Ranch, picked up 8 more at the campground and drove us all up to Massai Point for the hike back down to Faraway Ranch.
Sunny clear blue skies with a slight breeze all the way down.
Such an amazing place throughout with Inspiration Point & Heart of Rocks the 2 big highlights.
Wildlife spotted - 10 white tail deer, 20 turkey, 1 coati, several hawks and Mexican jays.
Solid hike, solid partner.
I sure hope this place does NOT get National Park status ... I like it just the way it is!

It's been a while!
Still my all-time favorite SE playground.
Everything looked hoodoo great, except Echo Park ... what a mess.
Unbelievable amount of deer along Silver Spur (18-20) including 2 very nice bucks.
Big lightning cell hitting as I left.
Monument has been recovering well from the fire.
Shall be back ... this place rocks!

Took the kids to southeastern AZ for the weekend. Saturday's sightseeing was the Chiricahuas. We parked at Massai Point and headed over to to the Heart of Rocks Loop and back. The kids loved it. Wyatt declared it to be his favorite hike so far. Great weather, and perfect day.

our friends went quadding, and we decided to head to massai point for a short hike. my favorite part was the "grotto" which was totally a fun place to play. there were a ton of people on the trail. lots of families with little ones and only one 20-oz bottle of water for the entire group. some slow moving tourists who couldn't keep their balance - loads of people that would never get a hiking license.

New territory fun ... 3rd new National Monument this year, etc, etc.
Really nice little campground - Bonita - including the host and myself, there were 7 of the 24 sites occupied. For such a small campground, they have a really nice amphitheater - on par with the one at Watchman in Zion. Also the group campsite rocks - biggest grills I've ever seen. All facilities in the Park were spotless. Only negative is no hammock hanging allowed.
Hiked the Boots & Burgers trip. Heart of Rocks is stunning, and the trail more scrambley and fun than I expected. Really good hiking park ... would be nicer still if all the creekbeds were not bone dry.
Saw tons of Coues deer, Mexican jays, and my first Montezuma quails.
Tony the campground host is fun to talk to. He told me that illegals were in the park the day before, but didn't know if it was legal for me to carry my gun - suggested I ask a LE Ranger ... cool, I was looking for a reason to talk to her! ;) She said yes it's legal, and she recommends it.

Our plan was to hit Sugarloaf Mountain for sunset and we had some time to kill. We decided to check out the Massai Point Nature Trail. This is very easy hiking and there are some nice viewpoints and lots of information signs. The CCC built a lookout on top of a rock that is very cool. We made the loop and then headed over to Sugarloaf parking.

I've seen the Monument once, about 15 Years ago when I first realized that there was a cool Mountain Range down there. I was working a Highway Job in Sunizona and when I asked people if there was anything Cool to see or do down there in my Off Time, the Monument was the first thing to come up. I took a couple of Trips out to the Chiricahuas while I was working down there. Always, right after Work, as I was staying in Willcox. I went up into the Turkey Creek Area one Day and explored a little bit. The other Day, I went to the Monument. I had enough Time to drive all the way up to Massai Point, go OMG! and then it got Dark.... :sl:

This was the Trip to really check it out...I knew I probably wouldn't get much Hiking in, but it was a great "Get Acquainted" Trip. I Camped for 2 Nights, arriving after Dark the first Night, after Birding Kansas Settlement. I spent 1 1/2 Days messing around in there. This Triplog and Photoset is just from the First Day. I did a slightly longer Hike and History Tour on the 2nd Day, so I'm going to do it separately...

It was pretty Chilly at Night and they had gotten some Snow from the Storm that hit me at Whitewater Draw....I had a thought to do Sugarloaf Mountain while I was there, but one look at the Trail, in the Shade, with all of the Recent Snow on it, was enough for me to say "next time".... I'm just not equipped for Snow Hikes.

I drove the Road, did the Nature Trail Hike at Massai Point, checked out all of the Overlooks and TH's, and did a small Loop Hike from the Campground to the Visitor Center. Back up to Massai Point for Sunset... :D

Amazing Place and I will be back to start taking on some of those cool Hikes... :D

Back to the Chiricahua Mountains to camp and do some more exploring. Very warm and dry as the hoped for clouds and possible cooling showers failed to materialize. I had not driven up to Massai Point since the fire; overall things look pretty good in the vicinity of the road. The area to the north including Timber Mountain and Cochise Head really got torched it appears.

- Inaugural Roper Lake State Park Ranger Hiking Club Adventure-
Starring Myself, Addie & Lauren

And there couldn't have been a better place to start then the Chiricahua National Monument!!!

We decided on the shuttle service to drop us off at Massai Point to start. On the drive up, I was telling the driver how I had come across a black bear in the road several years ago in the spot that we were driving, 30 seconds later we rounded a corner and holy :pk: there was a Huge black bear standing in the middle of the road :o What a thrill and I got a pretty good shot of him before he moved up the embankment!

From Massai Point we headed down into the HooDoo maze and spent the next 6 hours taking in all the splender of this truly amazing place, I shall never get tired of this Monument!
My 2 fellow hiking Rangers were just an absolute blast to see it all with and I can't remember the last time I have laughed so much on a hike! I also cannot remember the last time I've hiked the Monument and took under 25 pictures, but today was just about having a damn good time with 2 awesome friends - Thanks AS & LM, look very forward to #2,#3,#4 .....

Actually did the Echo Canyon to Heart of Rocks and Return
This route consists of the Ed Riggs, Mushroom Rock,
Big Balanced Rock and Heart of Rocks Loop Trails.
LENGTH: 7.3 miles/ 11.8 km
ACCESS: Echo Canyon Trailhead

Couldn't find that in the hikes. Started at the Massai Point parking lot, went Echo canyon, if I recall then Ed Riggs and Mushroom Trail to the Heart or Rocks. Hike with my son. It was a beautiful day. Some snow still on the ground in places. The fire really took out a lot of trees. Good news you can see more rocks. The vegetation is starting to grow again. The Chiris are magical! We got stopped short of the Heart of Rocks had some lunch and then finsihed the loop and came back down the same way we went in because the daylight was fading. Second time hiking in. The first time was a few years ago and I did the full Big Loop :)

My first trip back into the upper Monument since the fire!

We first started with a warm-up on the Massai Nature Trail loop before driving back down to the Echo Canyon trailhead. We then completed the Big Loop hiking it clockwise including the out-n-back to Inspiration Point. I really expected to see a lot more burn, but the only sections that really got cooked were the Southeast corner including the entire Inspiration Point trail & Echo Park down in the lower canyon. There was a few other spotty burn sections, but nothing too bad.

As for the rest of the trail(s), I was once again just blown away with the Monument scenery! The formations & trails (as always) were amazing, spectacular, epic, etc ........
In my opinion, this is still "the one" to do in Southeastern Arizona!

What made this trip even better was sharing it with 2 new friends I made at Roper Lake SP just a couple of days earlier. It was their first time seeing the Monument and I heard more then a few WOWS during the hike.

Thanks Dave & Kathy, you guys (and the hoodoos) Rocked!!!
