Autumn is my favorite season, and I sorely miss the fruit-loop-esque colored hillsides found in the northeast. With reports of colors past prime in the Flagstaff area (combined with the fact that it seems to be predominantly aspens up that way), I opted to head up to the rim like many others last weekend to see what I could see.

Initially I had planned on hitting up the popular Derrick-Horton loop, but then I figured I may as well get some additional mileage in (and also give myself a chance at more solitude). I arrived at the Horton TH to temps in the 40s and 14 other vehicles parked (there were 3 at the Derrick TH). Guessing that most of those people, if not all of them, were up Horton Creek, I decided to do the loop counter-clockwise, with hopes that by the time I was coming down Horton, the bulk majority would have cleared out.

After gathering my things, I headed up towards the campground to find the Derrick trail. Since there were still folks camped out at several of the camp sites, I headed in the general direction that I expected to find the trail while not entering any of the campsites-proper. I eventually managed to join up with the well trodden trail and was able to get my hike properly underway.

I made excellent time (for me) along the Derrick and Highline portions of the trail...the grade was gradual, there were minimal flora for distraction, and much of the foliage hadn't turned - so I wasn't really stopping for photos. I zipped right on past the junction with the Promontory Trail, but caught my mistake as I found myself questioning the trail as it started descending and getting further away from Promontory Butte. I back tracked and found the the flagged signpost (no sign), heaved a great sigh, and questioned my life choices before continuing on up the much less travelled path.

The Promontory Trail doesn't seem to see much human traffic - all recent evidence of passage was made by wildlife. The path was mostly easy to follow, though I lost track of it at least once after climbing over some deadfall. The grade is no joke, and there were large sections where it would be highly trecherous when wet if the smeared elk prints were any indication. As expected, my split times went by the wayside as I made my climb...I was glad to attain the rim when I finally got there.

Once on the rim, I tried making up what I could of my overall pace - first picking up FR76B, then FR76 before taking a cross country shortcut to find the Rim Road (FR300) and the General Crook Trail. I opted to attempt to stay on the General Crook trail as it ran parallel to the Rim Road in an attempt to escape the dust and traffic. The trail seems to have been rerouted to run mostly on the north side of the road, though I lost it in some places (usually when it entered an area used as a camp site). The tread was fairly distinct in some places, and significantly less so (and completely nonexistant in others) - at first, I was following chevron markers (most often white, sometimes orange), but then hit a stretch where the trail became marked with flagging tape / survey flags before returning back to being marked with chevrons. If you attempt it, but can't find the trail and don't feel like wandering the woods, the option is always there to walk along side 300, but that may be unplesant if there is a steady stream of traffic.

Just as I lost the trail again (another campsite), I popped out to 300 to check the roadsigns, and found myself near my next trail: the Horton Springs trail. As a side note, there isn't really much space to park at the upper trailhead. This trail definitely sees a lot more human traffic than the Promontory trail does - plenty of boot tracks were present. The descent is steep - and I managed to get onto a parallel "trail" in one section that eventually disappeared - I spotted the actual trail further down the hillside, and was able to get back on track relatively easily.

As I approached Horton Spring (as noted by the trail coming adjacent to a barbed wire fence), I heard someone's bluetooth speaker and caught sight of someone dropping trou 🤦🏼‍♀️- this being something I did not need to witness, I quickly stopped and blocked my view by placing trees in my line of sight. I have nothing nice to say about someone leaving a deposit trailside (literally on the other side of the barbed wire, uphill from the spring area)...and I was especially disgusted to discover it was a deuce and a pile of TP once I proceeded after I caught sight of the culprit heading back downhill properly attired.

Since I could not trust myself to behave civilly at the spring (where the trailside pooper continued to hang out), I cut down to some campsites and visited the lower area below the spring before continuing on my way. My pace was reduced a bit on the hike back down the Horton Creek Trail since I took several detours for photo ops. The trail obviously sees a lot of traffic - including that of some cows down below. I was dismayed to catch sight of TP at several campsite areas, some very close to the creek itself 🤦🏼‍♀️ suffice it to say, if you decide you need to get water to drink, make sure you're using appropriate purification!

When I made it back to the trailhead, there were 8 cars there...probably all belonging to folk I saw headed up the trail as I was hiking out. Overall, a nice day out. While the loop was great for getting in mileage, there was a lot of road walking (or walking within sight of the road in the case of the General Crook trail) - if I feel the urge to head back up to check See Canyon for colors, I'll have to make sure I go during the week.

Other people: None on Derrick, none on Promontory, 1 SxS and 1 Truck on FR76, none on General Crook (though a fairly steady stream of traffic on the rim road), 2 ascending on Horton Springs Trail as I made my way down, 7-8 groups on Horton Creek Trail heading in as I was on my way out.

This hike was a CCW loop starting and ending at the Hatchery Trailhead.

Tonto Creek had more water than normal, and it took me a while to find a place to cross it without getting my feet wet.

The Highline Trail had been rerouted in a few places since I had last been on it, and a couple of times I backtracked to make sure that I had not missed a turn. The reroutes added a little distance, but they moderated the elevation gain.

I had numerous issues with Route Scout -- it stopped recording 5-6 times on the hike. Some of the time I noticed it right away, but a few times I went a ways before noticing it. This screwed up some of my route finding and likely short changed me a bit on distance and elevation gain. Topo maps also disappeared for a while which messed up some of my off-trail route finding up on the rim.

I was hoping to see some fall foliage but there wasn't much up there. The big tooth maples that I saw were well past prime, and looked dry and dull. As a result, I decided to not go as far into Beaver Turkey Ridge as I normally do. The aspens that I saw had dull green leaves on them, and I am not sure if they will have their normal color.

I enjoyed hiking up on the Rim, even if the lack of fall color was disappointing.

linda planned a nice loop up on the rim
we set out from the fish hatchery at 0730, heading east on highline trail
looked around at horton spring, then up horton springs trail
steep but decent trail, not as bad as i thought it would be
rim road, limestone road, then an old road that linda found on satellite view
checked out a viewpoint along the road walk
a short easy off trail drop to knoll lake
we took a lunch break at the lake
very pleasant temps in the shade
i need to work on my lunch choices
returned via babe haught trail, which was also steep and rocky but had decent footing
didn't need the hiking pole i carried all day
this was a great loop on all new trails for me - hadn't been on this section of highline
good company and good conversation
thanks for the invite and for driving linda
thanks for the new hiking gear, bruce  pink is my color

Linda put together this track to help us escape yet another 110-degree day in the oven.

Highline Trail #31
Starting from the Hatchery TH (The Hatchery is open again), we headed 4.3 miles east on the Highline Trail, rollercoasting and gaining some elevation to Horton Spring. After a short break, we started on:

Horton Springs Trail #292
From the spring, this trail climbs 1,200 feet in less than 0.9 mile. So it’s a bit steep and a bit of a sweat-fest. This was the big climb of the day. We all marveled at how the runners in the 100-mile Mogollon Monster race could maintain a fast pace going up here.

We caught a breather, walking Trail 300 and then the Limestone Trail #115. Linda had found an old FR on satellite view that we hoped would get us gracefully down to Knoll Lake. It worked out perfectly, with only a short off-trail descent directly to the south end of the lake.

Babe Haught Trail - Hatchery to Knoll Lake
After a leisurely lunch at the lake, we were ready to head uphill 300 feet to cross the road and then descend the Babe Haught Trail. The Preacher Fire had "grown" considerably since earlier in the morning when it was barely visible. The smoke was now dark, unlike your typical fire. Maybe some tires were burning?

The weather was pretty much perfect all day long, with only a few sprinkles. It’s always fun hiking with these two. Thanks for driving, Linda.

Got started from the Hatchery trailhead to pleasant temps. East on Highline. Mostly easy rollercoaster the first few miles to Horton Spring. Plenty of shade. I lost my trekking pole along the way. Kind of bummed, but it was pretty beat up and probably due to be replaced (definitely not from REI) soon.

Took a break at Horton Spring, then headed up the steep Horton Spring trail straight up to the Rim. Steep, loose ground, not much shade, but at least I didn’t get bit by a dog on this trail this time around, so that was a plus. I took a million breaks. Kelly looked bored, but I had the vehicle key, so we all had to pretend breaks and breathing were a good thing.

Once finally up top, we walked the Rim road over towards Knoll Lake. Took a break at a nice viewpoint at the edge of the Rim. Headed north on some road called Limestone something. Easy walking. Getting from that road over to the south end of Knoll Lake was a bit of an unknown. I had traced a route following an old road west, but wasn’t sure what the final descent down to the lake would look like. Turned out to be a pretty good track—the old road was good, and the final drop was easier and not as steep as expected.

At the lake, we had lunch at a campsite on the southern edge. Enjoyed the shade and watched the birds flying over the water. We finally left once some clouds started building. Headed south on Babe Haught. Cursed the one small climb. The descent off the Rim wasn’t too bad. The trail is very rocky, but okay when dry. We had a few sprinkles of rain, but nothing of concern. Smoke from the Preacher Fire had notably increased by the afternoon.

Good day for this loop, and fun company all the way around.

Unfortunately, gpsjoe is no longer able to defend the name of this route, but using Super and Plus in the title seems redundant and a little silly. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice route, but I'd usually save Super for routes that are greater than twenty miles and I'm not sure what the plus means. Anyway, getting to Promontory Butte wasn't much trouble, but I couldn't enjoy my first beer there because it was so cold and windy. This actually was a blessing because once hiking north away from the rim, the snow was 3-4 feet deep in many places and as Chumley stated in a recent trip report, "annoying to cross". However, since we'd picked a colder day and started early, we lucked out and most of the drifts were still frozen solid. The snow coverage seemed to increase as we made our way north through the squishy forest roads. I was betting that once reaching FR300 the hike would get easier. It did, so I celebrated by drinking a beer and dried out some in the sun. The road was still very snowy, but something had drove over it and had packed down two tracks (snowcat?) that made the hiking easier. The descent of Horton Springs was fast after stopping for a snack and another beer. Horton Creek was turbid and raging, but I think more water was originating from the east tributary than the spring. The trail is damaged (eroded and rocky) in many places and there is a lot of deadfall now. The final crossing near the campground takes some skill to cross without getting wet. Four star route Joe, RIP.

Started from the Fish Hatchery TH and hiked across on the Highline Trail, then up on the steep but enjoyable Horton Springs Trail, then headed out to the Turkey Creek area. Located an old hunters platform complete with ladder. Hiked down the creek a bit then climbed out, using some old FR's to make our way to the General Crook Trail, and then down on the Babe.

Along the way we saw some turkey and one very large elk.

Great day.

I wanted to check out the fall color on Beaver Turkey Ridge, so I did a CCW loop that started and ended at the Fish Hatchery TH.

There was some fall color in the Beaver Turkey Ridge WQA, but I'd say that it is largely past prime. I did not see any red maple leaves left -- normally there is a lot in this area.

There is a little bit of color around Horton Spring, and it should get better over the next few days. I am wondering if See Canyon would be nice now.

Going forward, I would think that fall foliage will be better down below the rim as opposed to being up on the rim.

In the Beaver Turkey Ridge WQA, the big tooth reds were gone. There were some nice aspens, some showy maples with yellow leaves, and even some oaks that looked good with sunlight on them. The maples that are left will be gone soon, but there are still aspens with green leaves on them in some places, so these might look good over the next few days.

On the hunt for more fall color, and I'd never seen the Beaver Turkey Quiet Area make the change, so I looped a track around the ridge with a trip to Knoll Lake. Started at the Hatchery TH at sunrise.

Nobody on Babe Haught's tale of two trails. Rocky and steep turns into smooth descent after 300. The lake's dried up pretty far. With the water level pulled back there were some sandy beaches from which to watch the steam rise off the water while the sun got going. Saw the first people of the day, a camper down the SE leg and a couple folks who had paddled out and camped on the knoll. The few aspens there are were just starting to change around the lake.

Up from the lake with a brief trip in the uppermost parts of Gentry Canyon and then on to Gentry Spring. Mostly green until past Turkey Creek and into the quiet area. In BTQA the oaks are just about prime. The many aspens had mostly yet to change. Maples were about 50% green, 50% red, orange, or yellow. Mostly yellow. I'd think from now for about a week it's pretty much good to go. Wind's taking a lot of leaves down, but there's so much to see.

Found my way back to 300 passing Horseshoe Lake. Down Horton Springs, which was overgrown in some places. Didn't see anyone from Knoll Lake to Horton Spring, and then it got busy. Lots of campers by the spring and a few groups on Highline. Looks like just about nothing has turned below The Rim. Saw a few massive elk, but that was it for wildlife.

After yesterday's debacle, I decided to head somewhere with a little more shade. Horton Creek seemed like a good bet, with various options depending on how I feel. Hiked most of the way up Horton Creek, took a break at the spring, which I decided I don't even need to filter (we'll see if I end up regretting that decision). There was a group camped near the spring, which is off-limits according to the sign at the top of Horton Springs trail, but there were no notices at the more logical entrances, so I'll give them a pass.

I had gone down Horton Springs trail a few years ago, but got off route, and ended up at the Horton Creek/Highline junction. Turns out it's a lot easier to follow in the uphill direction.

Nice cool air on the rim, I always forget how nice it is up there. FR300 was tolerable, with a slight downhill grade, good views, and limited traffic. Got some good running in here.

This was my first time on Babe Haught trail, which was the only official trail up/down the rim I hadn't seen yet. I actually quite liked it, despite the lack of trees. Took a break at Tonto Creek, and when just about to head out on Highline, got distracted by a large berry patch.

Highline was far less miserable than expected, on account of good cloud cover by this point. Back at Horton Springs I filled up again, then back down Horton Creek trail, which I felt good enough to run down at a decent pace. Half way down I caught my foot on a rock and went down, and managed to escape with just a couple of bruises, and without even drawing blood.

Pretty much was the opposite of yesterday.

T'was a nice morning breeze strolling across Highline Trail from the Hatchery to Horton Spring. We stopped near Horton Spring for a break before ascending Horton Springs Trail to the rim. Bruce went to wet his sweat rag or such and I hopped a barbed-wire fence to go for a pee. I just missed the clearance over the fence. Three inches of duct tape would have saved the day but I did not come prepared. By chance on the side of my knee and just before the major knee-flexing ascent.

The intermittent sprinkler made a mess and figured it would be wise to cut the hike short. Bruce did a shorter loop than planned while I did the shortest option walking FR300 over to Babe Haught. I took a thirty-minute break when he left, thinking it might dry up as it didn't seep if I didn't move. Got lucky, zero blood loss thereon.

Several folks were camping along FR300. Generally wimpy setups. Nothing camp grasshopper caliber. I didn't wait long at the planned junction meetup before Bruce arrived for lunch. It warmed up moments off the edge of the rim heading down. Took it easy heading down. Perhaps over cautious but it was a nice little loop otherwise.

We passed by the full lots for people hiking to Horton Spring and continued to the Hatchery TH. It was already warm (by rim standards) at our late 9am start. We hopped on the Highline going eastbound passing over the clear running water of Tonto Creek. This trail rollercoasters eastward with great rim and Mazzy views. As always, Dick Williams Creek was also flowing and good water can be had here.

At Horton Spring we took a short break before and after bandaging up commander Joe from his fight with a barbed wire fence, we made the almost 1300' climb to the top of the rim. This time on the trail was the easiest time we have ever had following it. It is getting a lot more traffic. On all previous trips on this trail I'd never seen a soul. This time we passed 5 groups.

Up top, Joe stayed to literally lick his wounds and then let them dry. I went and played a ways in the Turkey Beaver area, before meeting back up with Joe at the upper Babe Haught TH .

After some lunch we made the descent down Babe.

Enjoyed seeing running water in Christopher Creek last week so decided to come back and see Horton. Met 2 other hikers as I was going up the steady climb on Derrick, had the well maintained Highline to myself, surprisingly even had the Springs in privacy for awhile, spent some time scrambling around there, but finally a couple with their dog showed up as I was pushing off. The pine smell is enjoyable on Highline but not too fond of the little pine cones that roll under your feet, as you head down nice to hear the welcoming sound of the creek before you see it.
Enjoyable trip down Horton Creek trail, occasional visit to the creek to wet my neck scarf and to take pictures. Ended up meeting a couple of dozen other hikers on my way to the campground , the parking lot for Horton was full. Disappointed at not seeing the Columbine flowers I enjoyed last year. Another nice day to enjoy the variety Arizona has to offer. Temperature was 65° at the start :) and 78°at he finish , was 93° in Mesa on the way back.

It didn't end up being unreasonably hot in the Valley on Saturday, but we headed north for the second straight weekend. We parked at Derrick Trailhead and started Derrick-Horton loop clockwise, following Horton Creek Trail toward the springs. I'd never hiked Horton before and was pleased to find it less crowded than expected--the Horton parking lot and the campgrounds near the trailhead were busy, but we didn't see too many people on the trail early on. The hike was easy and very pleasant with the sound of the creek flowing nearby, cool weather, the smell of pine, and some beautiful waterfalls along the way. After a lot of desert hikes and the extreme drought, it was nice to be around some water for a change.

We started to see more hikers around Horton Spring and had to make our way around people posing for pictures all over the falls...gotta love hiking the "popular" trails. It wasn't part of the original plan, but we added a little mileage by starting up Horton Springs Trail and enjoyed the panoramic views closer to the rim before starting back down. There were even more people at the springs as we passed again, but Highline Trail was almost completely empty and provided more views of the distant surroundings.

We decided to tack on the 0.75-mile spur to Promontory Butte, knowing it wouldn't be particularly fast hiking given the 1,000+ feet of elevation gain up to the rim in under a mile. The trail apparently doesn't get much traffic and even less maintenance work. There were a lot of downed logs along the way, and the GPS came in handy in areas where cairns didn't mark the route since the trail was often very faint--it felt like an off-trail hike along some stretches. There was a lot of loose dirt and rock, especially closer to the top, but it was a nice workout, and the butte offered great panoramic views. However, if you don't like steep trails, I'm not sure the last few tenths of a mile justify the extra effort for the slightly better view at the top :).

We made our way back to Highline and connected with Derrick Trail. After passing a biker and a few hikers, we didn't see any other people on the trail the rest of the afternoon. The east side of the loop on Highline/Derrick didn't quite measure up to the Horton side scenery-wise since it didn't have the creek running alongside, but it was still a beautiful area. There was more red rock that I'd expected, and some spots near the Highline/Derrick intersection looked a little like Sedona. We had more views of the rim as we finished off the loop and found ourselves back among the crowds at the parking lot.

It was a very scenic loop with some good variation along different sections of the route. I was expecting an easy stroll-in-the-woods hike, but with the detours up Horton Springs Trail and up to Promontory Butte, we ended with quite a bit of accumulated elevation gain. Getting back and doing more reading on HAZ, we could have added a little more mileage and hiked the Super Loop and seen some new things instead of the out-and-back spurs we added to the smaller loop, though we probably ended up with more elevation gain this way. Something to try next time...

I decided to head up to the Rim to check out the fall foliage and Beaver Turkey Ridge did not disappoint.

We did a loop hike starting and ending at the Hatchery TH. We went east on Highline to Horton Spring; took the steep Horton Spring Trail up to the Rim; wandered around Beaver Turkey Ridge; and then came back to the TH on the Babe Haught Trail.

Foliage on Beaver Turkey Ridge was a bit past prime, but there were pockets of some really nice fall color. It was very enjoyable hiking through there.

There was no fall color yet around Horton Spring. I imagine that it will be a week, and possibly 2 weeks, before any fall color shows up around the spring.

We saw a small tarantula on the Highline Trail, and we saw a single elk in 2 different places on Beaver Turkey -- one cow and one bull.

It was definitely a great day to be hiking up on the Rim!

The foliage on Beaver Turkey Ridge was a bit past its prime, but in many places it was really, really nice. There was lots of red, orange, and yellow.

Clockwise loop similar to what I snowshoed in November, except I went east on 300 to the Horton Springs Trail, and then back on the Highlife trail. Easier in summer, but far prettier in Winter. All the trails and roads I hiked are in good shape. Not much to say about this.

No smoke on the hike, but visibility was terrible from the smoke. Had some rain, too. Awesome cicadas in the cottonwoods in Payson and Star Valley. There is no BBQ that I saw in either town, and the Circle K disappointed me by having nasty weird injected sausages, but no hot dogs. I just ate steak, at home, instead. It was a NY Strip, which is oaky, but not great. I should have defrosted the Rib-eye.

It had been 6 months since I had been up to the Rim Country, so I was way overdue. I rectified that situation by doing the Horton Super Loop plus a side trip over to the Gila County co-high point on Promontory Butte.

We started at the Horton Creek TH and hiked alongside Horton Creek on the Horton Creek Trail. We hit the Highline Trail, and went a very short distance over to Horton Spring. There was a good bit of water in the creek as well as the spring.

We then made the steep climb up to the Rim on the Horton Spring Trail. I got us off track a little bit on the first part of the trail, but I managed to hit the trail again in short order. This trail is steep, gaining about 1,200 feet in 0.9 miles. However, it is a decent trail and is fairly easy to follow with lots of cairns.

Once on the Rim Road, we headed east for a ways before going off-trail to FR 76. I probably could have turned sooner off the Rim Road and saved some mileage. Once on FR 76, we headed back to the west for a ways before going off trail and going to the Gila County High Point. At the high point we saw the cadastral survey marker and the summit cairn -- the summit register needs a new log book, which I forgot bring. Then we went a little SE over to where the benchmark and 2 reference disks are and ate lunch.

Then we went off-trail for a bit over to the Promontory TH, and descended on the steep, slippery, primitive Promontory Trail until we got to the Highline Trail. The Promontory Trail is about as bad as it gets for a named trail. Once on Highline, we headed south to the Derrick Trail, and then took Derrick back to the TH.

It was a great day to be up there -- the temperature was about 40 at the start of the hike, and it was mostly in the 40's for the entire hike, although it was 53 when we got back to the TH. There was a bit of thunder just before we got to the Promontory Trail, and there were a few snow flurries during the descent on the Promontory Trail. There was a smidgen of snow in a couple of places up on Promontory Butte, but snow was a non-issue on the hike.
