Forecast was for another cool-ish weekend day, so I took advantage of it. Did the same 20 mile loop trail as last weekend, but this time did it counter-clockwise which should have been easier. The route started at Bursera trailhead heading toward Lost Ranch. Took the Gila Trail eastward this time to where it meets National Trail. Took National east down the hill, then Kiwanis Trail. Then Las Lomitas to Max Delta.

After a short rest and a snack at the Bike Hub at the "Y". Then up and over the Alta Trail. On Alta I started noticing that my brand new boots that I was breaking in didn't fit as well as I thought they would in the store. Not great. Still another 15 miles to go. Hopefully it won't be too bad (my feet were in pain for the last 5 or 6 miles :( - not fun). Ate my lunch at the San Juan lookout, then headed north to Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter trail. There was a nice breeze that kept it cool and comfortable. As the trail got closer to the 202 freeway that breeze turned into a stiff headwind that tried to take my hat. All day there were times with no wind when it was hot, and strong wind when it felt cold. On average it was pretty comfortable.

From the Perimeter Trail to National Trail to Gila Trail and then back. This time I hiked the entire length of the Gila Trail starting from the middle to the east end, and from the west end back to the middle. There are shorter ways to hike Gila end to end, but none of then are real short since neither end of the trail is at a trailhead.

I wanted to get in some distance this weekend. I was going to drive north for cooler weather, but Saturday morning was cool in Phoenix so I decided to save a couple hours driving each way and hike South Mountain. I started at the Bursera trailhead as usual toward Lost Ranch. Decided to take Gila and check out the new Western end of the Gila trail that I haven't been on yet.

First thing I have to say is that it felt great walking on well maintained trails. Last weekend's hike in Prescott was slow and steep and tiring. This was the exact opposite. The trail was well marked. When I reached the junction of Gila and Bursera there was a post pointing to the new section of Gila trail. It gently climbed up the hill heading west. Then at the ridge line it went down the other side with long, easy switchbacks. Well done South Mountain! They could have saved a lot of distance by taking the shortest route straight down the slope, but instead made a long, easy switchback which kept the slope gentle.

Gila trail ends at National where National crosses the the big wash at the bottom of the hill. My plan was to flow National to San Juan lookout and take Alta Trail. Along the way I saw a sign for Ma Hua Tauk Perimeter Trail. I know that goes near San Juan and I had never hikes it so I turned of National and followed it. It started heading west toward the casino and goes past a number of houses just east of the 202 that are hidden from view on the freeway by the sound wall. The trail runs above and parallel to the 202 for a while and the traffic noise is VERY LOUD! I couldn't even hear Route Scout announcements. Once the trail turns east the freeway noise faded.

Got to San Juan and rested for a few minutes at the lookout. Then headed up Alta Trail to the Y. Then Max Delta to Las Lomitas. To another break near the Kiwanis trailhead. Then up Kiwanis to National to Gila. I took the old Pyramid Trail back to the start. In retrospect I should have stayed on Gila where it branches off so that I could have done the full length of Gila. But phone battery was dying and I didn't want to lose the end of the route recording.

South mountain has been doing a great job maintaining the trails and making them easy to walk on.

Actually hiked along San Juan Road from MP 2 to the overlook at MP 6. Started 8:30am, finished 11:30am. Only passed a couple hikers/joggers and several bicyclists. Strangely enough a couple vehicles passed me since this is gated off. I found out that there was a photo shoot in progress at the overlook. Quail, cottontail rabbit, verdins...but no coyotes or rattlers. :-) Warm but there was a breeze on the way back. Talked with a couple rangers while I was out there.

Stopped at Encanto GC on the way home to renew my Phx card and saw a car with a HAZ decal in the back window. Hmmm, another hiking golfer?

Today, I hiked the first & last third of Hau’Pal; plus bits of Alta, Bajada, Max Delta and Crosscut.

T-Bone no longer exists: It is being remediated. Same with most of Warrior.

If you are tempted to use the trailhead on 19th Ave. -- instead of Vista or San Juan -- don't drive straight down 19th Ave. For one, it gets medieval between I-10 and I-17, but worse is the at grade RR xing at Lower Buckeye. Ugh. Fifteen minute delay while they shuffled cars. Instead, take 7th Ave., then bop over to 19th on Southern.

Normally, I like a bit of warmup before a climb starts, but Hau'Pal heads straight up. Trail's in good shape with some step-ups. At the top, Hau'Pal splits left & down. I went right, along the ridgeline.

Alta was in its usual good shape, though there were a few eroded spots. (Obviously from previous monsoons ...) Halfway down, I ate lunch at the "stone chair".

On sat view, the San Juan triangle is still unfinished. In reality ... still unfinished. Which may explain why I saw tissues dotted throughout my day. 😑

If you hear shooting, no worries: That is the police academy, ~⅔ mile away.

On the way home, I stopped at Mickey D's. No shamrock shake!? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have quite a few belated posts that I want to record before the new year. I did this early morning hike starting from the Max Delta/Crosscut TH. Due to realignments, the Crosscut is a new addition for this TH. This is a nice TH, because it is outside the park so you can actually start whenever you want. Not important today. Got started a little after 6am. I did a simple in and out on the Delta. Finished before the sun crested the hill. Didn’t see anyone on the trails, but I did see two coyotes. Tried to get a picture, but they blend right into the background.

I sort of underestimated this loop and hiked until dusk... But still didn't miss dinner. :) The Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter was more hilly and challenging than I'd remembered. It's very similar to Bajada (better isolated trail) and the Desert Classic (not as good as either). For me, Alta including Maricopa Peak is the second best route in SoMo after MLC because of the lack of mountain biker hoards. National near San Juan Lookout had some trail reworked, essentially redirected out of the ditches, which was needed. The Alta and Ma Ha Tauk trails have been rerouted or relabeled some, respectively. The new parking area is open, I think labeled as San Juan Bike Hub. Surprisingly nice temperature and breezes for late March, but the wildflowers in this area aren't as prolific as last spring.

I hit the trail a little before sunrise. I went up the steep west half. the trail was in good shape. As I was about to top out, there was a guy with a Pitbull pulling on it's leash with the biggest head I've ever seen at the saddle. I went right to Star peak and waited for him to head down. The guy didn't seem to sure footed and I didn't want to follow him down incase he slipped and let the dog go. I headed west until I hit Alta then took it east. I followed it down including the reroute to the new "Y" parking lot. The Alta trail is in good shape too. My first time on the reroute and at the new parking area. I was expecting more from what seems like a two year project. Not trying to be negative. I was just hoping for maybe a restroom or a couple benches or ?? From there I took Max Delta and Cross Cut back to Hau'Pal. Max Delta and Cross Cut are in good shape for the parts I hiked on. Hau'Pal is pretty rocky until almost to the parking lot. A few people on the first part of Hau'Pal. Nobody on Alta, Max Delta or Cross Cut. A dozen or so on the second part of Hau'Pal. Nice hike, weather, and company albeit a lot of talking! :D :y: HAZ ROCKS!!

Alta trail to Maricopa Peak was our main objective for the day. We had to start from the Ranger trail since there was nowhere to park at the triangle and San Juan was falsely advertised as open.
Instead of an over and back we decided to hit Star Peak then descend via the "new" Warrior trail which is now named Hua'Pal.
We took the Connecter trail from the Hua'Pal loop to the Max Delta then made our way back to the Ranger trail which we started from.
Interesting hike on some new trails for me. Thanks Kelly! :)

met john at ranger trailhead at 0630, since san juan road wasn't open
south mountain park website indicated that it should have been but maybe it hasn't been since the triangle destruction
the new parking area will be pretty nice
the main objective was maricopa peak
ranger and bajada to alta, which has been rerouted from the new parking area
checked out some mines along alta
up the use trail to maricopa peak
found the benchmark once, but couldn't find it today
there is a brand new summit register on the peak
heading down, we considered the over and back, deciding against it given the extra credit
on the return, we continued on the ridgeline to star peak
down the old warrior trail aka t-bone aka hau'pal loop
connector trail to max delta and back to ranger
double digits and a different combo
breakfast burritos at carolina's after
good times, thanks john :)

After run at SoMo. Did a loop involving the Max Delta. Got on the trail just after 4pm starting from the TH at Scorpion Gulch. Went in on the Max Delta and then east on the Bajada for a short stretch. Looks like there still another month’s worth of work to be done before this new TH is functioning. From the Bajada, I took the Ranger north to where it connects to the Crosscut (near the horse arena). Signage from this point gets a little confusing, in part, because of all the “use” trails still active in this area. After crossing the now, torn up road, I took a trail that veered to the west. There were two signposts that indicated that this was part of the Crosscut trail and one of those post was just prior to entering the wash across from the Ranger station. I don’t recall this being the case in years past, but….. and then all the posts in the wash say Las Lomitas trail. (So I am not sure how the Crosscut and Lomitas are officially interacting). Then took Lomitas back to the TH. Warm and humid, but there was a nice breeze for most of the run. No wildlife, but did encounter two hikers.

Waiting until noon and drove to a spot I thought I could avoid the rain. Still got a few sprinkles but no worries. I hiked Max Delta all the way to the end where it meets Bajada Trail. That is where it looks like they are putting in a parking lot. Just west of the Y parking area. Seems to be slow going!! On the way back I noticed Los Lamitas starts/ends at a spot along Max Delta. Who knew! :y: Delighted by this , I took Los Lomitas all the way to its other start/end. That is now where Holbert trail starts. Who knew! :y: What a treat! :D From there I crossed the parking lot and wash and came out right across the street from my car.
Looking pretty green out there!!

Got to the start of the trail near the main gate about 5:30 AM and 82 degrees. Sun was up but blocked by clouds so got to enjoy a nice stroll up Max Delta without sun. Only went about a half mile up and back. Nice clean desert air. Saw Dove eating saguaro fruits. Lots of bikers, joggers and road walkers at the parking area but about 99% of them stayed on the closed main road. Many talking about work and how important they are. Good for them but I'd rather concentrate on the plants and animals and wonder why some of the creosote had all their green leaves while most have already withered away. One of life's unsolved mysteries.

New PB for me which was rather unexpected. Normally if I am wearing the vest I am right around 2.85 to 3.25mph on my pace but for some reason I just felt good today. Probably a fluke, but I'll take it.

Hoping to get up north for some real hiking next week. 8)

Not something I would normally post, this is just a daily routine/workout/shakedown hike for me. It's a moderately to heavily trafficked trail and works for testing out new gear and is a decent cardio workout (for me).

However, Friday I had apparently lost my wallet while on the trail. Friday night we got a knock at the door from a nice gentleman who returned my wallet. Completely flabbergasted by this act of kindness. I did not get the chance to personally thank the person but if by chance you're a HAZer, thank you, you're a good person and I appreciate the return of the wallet.
