1st trip
This was my third and last of three short, off-trail hikes from my planned 6nt/7day Mogollon Rim- Camp Grasshopper trip from 6/14 to 6/20/23.

A number of years back, I had researched and confirmed a recommended and safely doable off-trail hiking route into an upper section of Barbershop Canyon Creek from my [ Camp Grasshopper - Mogollon Rim-C/Site#2 ] . This June'23 visit I planned to reconfirm today- 6/19/23, to clean-up, and to rock cairn a/r this HAZ previously posted route.

Now with minor revisions, added "key" WPs and my 6/19 photoset with more detailed pics, pic captions, and pic tag notes, I am now reposting this recommended and revised Gps off-trail route to "Enter/Exit" Barbershop Canyon Creek.

As it turned out, it was a good decision for me to wait until today-6/19 instead of the day before as originally planned to do this hike section as it took me much longer than I originally thought, to follow and clean-up my old Gps off-trail route down to enter Barbershop Canyon Creek.

As I mentioned in my 6/18 triplog, hopefully on my next visit, I will now be able to more quickly hike down to Barbershop Canyon Creek via this updated 6/19 route and then hike down canyon (distance still tbd) to exit back up at my second recommended 6/18 off-trail hike Entry/Exit location, then connecting back with FR139C for a loop back to Park/TH Start at my Campsite #2 [ photo ]

1st trip
This was my second of three short, off-trail hikes from my planned 6nt/7day Mogollon Rim- Camp Grasshopper trip from 6/14 to 6/20/23.

A number of years back, I had researched and confirmed a recommended and doable off-trail hiking route into an upper section of Barbershop Canyon Creek from my [ Camp Grasshopper - Mogollon Rim-C/Site#2 ] . This June'23 visit I planned to reconfirm on 6/19/23, to clean-up and to a/r rock cairn this HAZ posted and known Gps Hiking Route.

Over the past couple of years, I had also been researching on HAZ Route Editor, a hopeful safe and doable second off-trail Elk Route an approximate one mile further down FR139C from this Camp GH #2. On 9/2/22 I first hiked this second off-trail route and posted it all on HAZ.

This 6/18/23, I had hoped to off-trail hike these two off-trail routes (in-down canyon-out) of Barbershop Canyon Creek then connect with FR139C for a loop back to my vehicle campsite. Unfortunately, on 6/18 when I had planned to do this loop, there was a group with a loud barking dog camping over this Father's Day weekend at Camp GH #2. Since I would have to go through their campsite to connect with the off-trail route into Barbershop Canyon, I decided to just redo my 9/2/22 off-trail hike route further down FR139C to enjoy a short, lush green and actively flowing creek down Barbershop Canyon hike section and that is exactly what I did this day! :)

I hope to go back again for one week sometime this coming AZ monsoon August'23, hopefully to hike (down canyon) this section of Upper Barbershop Canyon Creek between my two now recommended off-trail entrance/exit locations. Maybe a new HAZ Hike Guide will be justified too!

I decided to head up to the Rim for a couple of days of hiking and one night of car camping at Camp Grasshopper Site #2. After setting up camp, we hiked over to Pinchot Cabin and back. When we got back to the campsite we decided to climb up the ridge to the west of the campsite and check out the Merritt Draw Riparian Area.

It was a nice day to be hiking up on the Rim. We saw a mountain biker at Pinchot Cabin, but did not see anyone else all day. At Pinchot Cabin we started hiking on the Houston Brothers Trail, thinking that we might go back to the campsite that way. However, after a bit of reflection, I figured that route would be longer than I wanted, so after a short distance on the Houston Brothers Trail, we turned around and went back the way that we came.

The Merritt Draw Riparian Area was really nice and is worthy of some more exploration.

The campsite was clean except for some TP that some moron had left not too far from the fire ring. You'd think that people could do better than that, but I guess not.

This is a nice area, and I hope to get back there later in the summer.

1st trip
I was wanting to check out a couple of cabins on the Cabin Loop that I had not been to, so I decided to camp at the excellent Camp Grasshopper #2 site on the rim, and hike for a couple of days.

This was day 1, so I drove in and set up my tent, and then I decided to hike to the Pinchot Cabin. I went north on FR 139C until it ended, and then made an off-trail descent down to a spring where Barbershop Canyon and Merritt Draw meet. There I picked up the U-Bar Trail and took it to Pinchot Cabin. This was a very nice trail to hike on. The cabin was nice to check out, but it sure needs a new roof.

I had thought about doing a loop by taking the Houston Brothers Trail south to the Barbershop Trail, and then taking FR139 and FR139C back to Camp Grasshopper. That would have added 2+ miles to the hike, and it was getting a bit late, so I decided to just retrace my steps back. Of course, I missed a turn to the trail and walked on a forest road longer than I should have. So I checked out my map and GPS track and went off-trail for a ways to FR139 just below the U-Bar Trail, and then took it back to U-Bar. I don't think that my mistake added more than 1/4 mile to the hike.

This is a nice area to hike in, and I imagine that I will go back there sometime for some more exploration. It did not look like anyone had been to Camp Grasshopper since my one-night stay there the previous week.

1st trip
I decided to escape the heat of the VOS, so I headed up to the Mogollon Rim to hike and car camp in an area that I had not been to before.

I drove up to Camp Grasshopper Site #2, and got my tent set up. Then I decided to hike north on FR 139C, following the Merritt Draw Lower Loop, and for a short ways the Merritt Draw Middle Loop and Maverick Canyon Loop. After a couple of miles or so I got to the end of 139C, and descended off-trail down to Merritt Draw. After the descent I was across from the Ubar Trail at a nice spring, with a pool of water deep enough to swim in had I been so inclined.

Then I followed the Merritt Draw Lower GPS track up Merritt Draw. The track went uphill after a ways, but it was really overgrown with some thorn bushes. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt with no gloves, and since I really wasn't looking to donate a pint of blood, I backtracked a bit and found a route up between cliffs. It was a bit steep in a couple of places, but it wasn't TOO bad. I then went south, in between FR 139C and @grasshopper's GPS track. I had intended to make my way back to @grasshopper's route, but there was some deadfall in front of me, and I decided to take the easy way, so I went uphill a bit back to FR 139C.

On the way back to the campsite I stopped to check out campsite #3 and campsite #2.5. Campsite #3 was almost, but not quite, as nice as campsite #2. Campsite #2.5 was also nice, but it did not have all the amenities of Campsite #2. Which is why @grasshopper charges less for site 2.5, so it has some appeal to more budget minded campers. otoh, @grasshopper charges an arm and leg for site #2, so you'd better have some deep pockets to stay there!...lol...I am just kidding of course!

Once I got back to Campsite #2, I walked up the hill on the other side of FR 139C, just to check it out. However, I decided to save any further exploration for another day.

This is a nice area, and I plan to come back and explore some more of Merritt Draw, and also hike on some of the Cabin Loop to check out the Pinchot Cabin and Buck Springs Fire Guard Station.

Absolutely beautiful couple of days of camping on the rim. My kids had been asking for a camping trip and this incredible spot did the trick!Temps were perfect in the mid-80's during the day and mid-60's at night. We only saw one truck on Forest Road 139C and that was as we were driving out. Grasshopper thank you so much for posting this amazing camping location. I would have never found this otherwise.

I had a burning :sweat: need this past late September to exit our continuing 100F degree Phoenix area days for the hills. My first choice was the Mogollon Rim- Cabin Loop car camping area off FR139C at one of my favorite remote campsite areas in the shaded pines and oaks at 7500ft elevation.

When I decide to go car camping, it is always a very time consuming and a pretty big deal (for my camping prep-camp setup-camp tear down) the way I enjoy it, so for me a minimum of 4 nights/5 day stay in almost mandatory, and especially for this trip when I decided to unfold "Hank's Hilton Kitchen" complex :)

I had very few objectives for this one week (5 night/6 day) trip except to enjoy the cooler temps, R&R, hike some, stay in camp some to read, and to eat well with emphasis on preparing and enjoying some serious breakfast meals. My "Camp Grasshopper" pics should confirm.. :D

We met up with Hank at Dane Spring TH and did a very nice loop through Dane Canyon and along Barbershop and U-Bar trails.

Afterwards we were honored to be invited over to "Camp Grasshopper" for some delicious hors d'oeuvres before the trek back to the valley - thank you Hank!

Car Camping
Car Camping6 Days

It was past time for me to plan another car camping/hiking/R&R "get-away". This time to one of my favorite Mogollon Rim-Cabin Loop area locations at 7435ft elevation.

Back in early June I had intended this July 13 to July 18 (5nt/6day) event to be a group outing, but due to Coconino NF fire restrictions in-force prior-to 7/12/11 and my concerns regarding a possible Coconino NF violation of group/vehicle camping at this proposed campsite without me having a Plan "B" group campsite location, on 7/9 I most reluctantly thought it best to cancel our previously planned group overnight camping.

On my Mogollon Rim arrival day Wed-7/13 I drove the immediate area up/down/around FR139 and FR139C and just could not find an alternate campsite location that I liked enough to commit set up of my major "Camp Grasshopper" for 5 nights and 6 days of camping and that was also within close hiking access to our Cabin Loop area trails. So I ended up camping for this entire period at my original planned group campsite with "off trail" hiking access to all the areas that I had originally intended to explore:

Thurs-7/14: From my campsite to ~3mls up FR139C to off trail down 300ft to intersection of U-Bar Tr28/Barbershop Canyon to off trail ~4.5mls up Barbershop Cy to an off trail exit point back to my campsite location;

Fri-7/15: From my campsite to cross FR139C to off trail over to Merritt Draw to explore the Forest Service protected (fenced) riparian area in this interesting draw with its incredibly lush green meadow area;

Sat-7/16: Dane Canyon Loop (7.0 mile route per hike description write-up) from the FR321A Dane Spring/Cabin TH Start location;

Sun-7/17: From my campsite up FR139C to connect with an obscure, closed to vehicles logging road (FR9735P) to off trail downhill to intersect middle Merritt Draw with plans to explore a few hiking miles down riparian Merritt Draw to its intersection end at U-Bar Tr28/Barbershop Canyon and then hike back up Merritt Draw past my previous Merritt Draw entry point and hike all the way up Merritt Draw to repeat the hiking area of my 7/15 hike;

I will post separate photosets and GPS Tracks for these above four hikes and will also post a few "Camp Grasshopper" pics from my very enjoyable 5nts/6days :DANCE:
