9:15 start after dropping my GS off at school. Traveling CW I planned to hit 3 peaks along the way.
Breezy to begin with turning to 40mph winds to finish. I hit unnamed peak 2080 first and continued to Dixie. I saw a smattering of hikers and one biker (That I saw 3 times).

Next up was Union. I almost cut the hike short because of darkening skies to the west. After consulting the radar, it looked like it was going to stay west.

Down from Union (which is my favorite of the 3) I made my was back to the lot. I got sprinkled on a bit hiking and a light rain as I was driving away.

Joined Kelly for one of her 10 mile "rehab" hikes. Lots of early morning hot air balloons up in the cool air. Quite a few MTBers on the trails. Nice to do something a little different. Thanks Kelly! :)

Another hike on the north end of the valley, similar to one we did last year.
Pretty sunrise as we got going. Nice and green out there with wildflowers making a showing in what should be a strong season.
Not as many people out as we expected. Nice day. Thanks Kelly! :)

I was going to do this on Saturday but decided it was too windy and cold so I did it today. I'm trying to work on my elevation prowess as I continue to struggle. It was a beautiful day for the hike. Lots of people out for a late Sunday afternoon. I was really quite surprised that I encountered hikers and bikers the whole route.

Yep folks, it is so incredibly green out there everywhere and very thick. I enjoyed my hike up Hawk's Nest Trail. No one home at the nest yet. When I got to the saddle I hiked clockwise as I wanted to do Western Vista Peak. The grassy areas that weren't so full of flora were just like a golf course green; thus the title of my hike. This occurred in many areas of the hike. I tried not to take too many pictures of this as I'm sure you're all seeing it out there.

And so it was time to climb up Western Vista Trail. The initial climb is pretty steep for me, or in DixieFlyer terms, "direct". Once it gets closer to the top they throw in a nice switchback to get you up the last of the elevation. I paused a few times to catch my breath. As I was coming down, there were four other people making their way up as well as a bike rider.

Now safely back on Dixie Mountain Loop I could enjoy the surroundings and delightful temps as I rollercoastered to the north side of the loop. But wait, a poppy :y: in bloom along with one on the way! I had already been taking picutres of flora in its green stage. Popcorn flowers were starting to come out as well. And the Barrel Cactus were so fat and plump; they looked like little giants.

Once on the east side I was hiking in the shade from time to time and still encountering hikers. As I rounded the southeast corner I saw that the hot air balloons were up. I think it's always fun to see them so I tried to get some pictures, which was hard as the sun was staring me in the face.

WATCH 2:41-4:46PM, 5.37 miles burning 882 calories. 1627-2124 elevation. 137 avg bpm/161 max. They either changed the parameters for the Zones or I'm in better shape. 20% Zone 4 Anaerobic (149-167 bpm), 44% Zone 3 Aerobic (131-148 bpm), 35% Zone 2 Weight Control (112-130 bpm). Temp, a lovely 64.3 and sunny, 32% humidity.

Initially the weather, mostly the temperature, didn't look promising. Fortunately the weather was nearly perfect by the time we started hiking as the sun came out :) . Peak Day for Kelly. I got two of the three, did one I don't like that much and one I liked. We went clockwise after getting to the top of Hawk's Nest. We saw only one person on this part of the hike.

We headed up Western Vista; I hate the first part of the ascent as it is steep and unforgiving. Once you get up to the tree, it's just fine. We checked out the views in all directions which were pretty clear except the mountains in the south. I was surprised at the size of the walls on the new TSMC plant. There is still a very large crane their among others. It's been fun watching that plant grow.

Heading over to the east side we saw two other hikers and that would be it until we hit the base of Dixie. Here I opted to find a comfortable rock while Kelly rocked up the mountain. I wanted to save my energy for Union. We would see no other hikers until the junction with Hawks Nest. So we headed down Valle and the long approach to Union. We did stop to observe the backlit cholla and the green golf-course looking grass.

And now for that last mile before the Union Peak climb. It wasn't too bad except that last stinkin' hill before the junction. And then follow the sign post instructions: "UP". I like the grade on this let alone the trail itself is pretty awesome. It also has a long ridgeline which Kelly always enjoys. I saw a couple little butterflies. That's the third time I've seen a butterfly couple out.

Still had a couple miles to go on our way back to the Trailhead finishing off on the Desert Tortoise Trail. It was so quiet today and really ideal hiking conditions. The trails are so nice out here. I get so spoiled. It was a very good workout as my legs definitely feel it as I sit here finishing off the report.

I forgot to fire up my watch to Hiking Mode but started it when it beeped me that it detected my automatic walking. And then I realized I forgot to charge it when it started rattling off final stats after we had come off Union so I switched to my phone for stats. I hadn't tried that before but it seems to have worked.

WATCH:
Walking 1:05-1:16PM, 32mi, 128bpm/157 max burning 48 calories. Temp 54.7 degrees, sunny with 30% humidity
Hiking 1:16-4:18PM, 7.04 mi, 1677-2340 feet, 140bpm/172 max. 54% Zone 5, 32% Zone 4, 10% Zone 3 burning 1301 calories
PHONE:
Hiking 4:18-5:01PM, 2.3 mi, 1628-1946 feet (179 ft elevation) but it doesn't break down BPM, burning 212 calories. However, it gives better weather stats: 57.1 sunny, 23% humidity, 5MPH wind at NW.320

TOTALS 9.66 mi, 1628-2340 feet, burned 2060 calories

Mid day start waiting for it to warm up. Only a smattering of cars in the lot. I did a CW loop hitting the 2 of the 3 peaks before heading over to Union Peak for my 3rd peak. It'd been 7 years since I'd been up this one and I'd forgotten how enjoyable this climb is. Best views in the area

Clockwise. Got 'er done. Hike seemed to go fine and I didn't feel totally spent either so I think I'm making progress. It was a nice afternoon for the whole hike. A lot more people out on the trail than I thot I would see but it was a Sunday; only two lizards. Western Vista is the longer of the two peaks with the first half being the steepest. And then the rollercoaster of little hills as you make your way north and then east.

The level area as you head south was all in the shade and then you have a couple more rollercoaster hills before starting the switchbacky slightly steep ascent of Dixie Summit. However, the mileage is shorter than Western Vista. The top part always gets me with the false summit before it steeply goes up that last little bit. There was a mother, daughter atop having a nice time together.

Once I got back down the hill it turned into a hike for beer. I continued to encounter other hikers. I also noticed here the ocotillo still had their leaves vs the north Preserve. I also noticed the Teddy Cholla arms seemed pretty chunky so they must be enjoying the fall weather I guess.

WATCH: Interestingly, mileage matched up with RS the first 3 miles which doesn't happen very often. 1:57-4:17PM, 5.76 miles, 1652-2367 feet. 139 avg bpm (149 last March)/max 190 (188 last March). 54% Zone 5 Max, 28% Zone 4 anaerobic, 18% Zone 3 aerobic burning 1003 calories (929 last March). Starting Temp 71.5 and sunny with 16% humidity.

Short after work hike. Got to the TH around 4pm and did an in out on the Dixie and the Western. Did the shortest version, going clockwise on the Dixie Loop. Warm, but once again the breezes made it decent. Had the trails to myself; didn’t see anyone or thing while I was out there. There wasn’t even another car at the TH while I was hiking. Miss running, bit it’s still nice to be able to hike.

With this nice but windy morning I wanted to get a little longer hike in and some elevation so this was my choice. I headed up Hawk's Nest and visited with a photographer for a bit trying to describe where the Esplanade Owls were. I took a few pics of the owls before hiking on. As I rounded the corner and headed WNW, the wind took over until I got down the hill and headed east.

The sky had some interesting clouds and with the changing light I tried to get some pics of the chollas and blooming Palo Verdes during the hike. For now, I needed to get up Western Vista which was made harder by my sore gluteus maximus from yesterday's Get Strong class (we did all sorts of lunges). As I got higher the wind and I had a couple contests which I eventually won as I topped out and took a moment to enjoy it before heading back down. I continued around the loop enjoying the wonderful temp and brisk breeze. I saw a few hikers as I proceeded and got back up to the eastern part of the loop. There were some nice blooming Palo Verde so I had to grab some pictures.

I took the exit to Valle Vista and headed down that and around to Desert Tortoise Trail enjoying the color, views, temperature and sky. Perfect tibber weather. I finally came around the other side and back to Hawk's Nest where I went back up to check out the owls. There was another photographer there and others so we all visited awhile including one fellow who lived below and a couple that had just moved here from Colorado. I snuck a few more pics of the little ones and headed back down to enjoy my beer and ritz crackers before heading home.

I think I'll skip Barbell class tomorrow and head out to the Phx Mountain Preserve; gotta enjoy these lovely morning temps at regular morning hours.

WATCH: 6.81 miles (1576 low, 2097 high) 131 avg bpm, 160 max (9% Zone 4 Anaerobic, 39% Zone 3 Aerobic, 47% Zone 2 Weight control, 4.5% low intensity) burning 1133 calories. Starting temp 66.1 Sunny and Windy with 32% humidity.

Nice Sunday morning hike. Got started about 830 to enjoy a bit of warming. Parking lot was about 3/4 full, but it never felt too busy. Took the loop ccw with both peaks, just needed a few quick breaks. I took an extended break on top of western vista to enjoy the views. Only saw two bikes, but boy a bunch of dogs. All friendly encounters. I keep ramping up my hikes with no issues, so going to try and go a little bigger next time.

Everybody was hiking with another person or a dog. I was the only lone female out on the trail today until I got back to the TH when a male hiker had just started. I saw probably about twenty people, one bike rider. Only saw one lizard :( .

Everyone said hello except one bad apple; otherwise it would have been 100%

Enjoyed one of my Huck Lagers.

WATCH and RS agreed on each mile, that usually doesn't happen. 5.46 miles (1626 low point, 2105 high point) (1.81 ascent, 1.84 descent) avg bpm 142, max 173 with 63% at max, 27% at anaerobic and 9% at aerobic burning 863 calories. Starting temp 68 and 21% humidity finishing at 11:27AM

Desert Vista Trailhead facilities are the original modern wave sweeping Phx Preserves. Including the filtered water station that hit Telegraph, Piestewa, etc, but a few years before based on notable wear. Prior to the full door stall design too, just Men's/Women's single tank flush with a laminated note to wait three seconds. Horse trailer parking.

Desert Vista Trailhead starts everyone on Hawk's Nest Trail. My initial thought was, better than anticipated because there is no mundane flat access on the edge of the hills.

A lowkey hurrah comes quickly in a dip through a ravine where paloverdes canopy. As expected, the tread is easy to moderate for mtn bikes and 3 to 6 ft wide. Basalt is notable in areas heading west on Dixie Mtn Loop.

If you have an ounce of tibber-mode in ya, the sunrise hour might throttle down the pace to a crawl. It's vista city. The western edge of Dixie Mountain Loop is like Piestewa Circumference but nicely elevated above the desert floor. Near and distant mountain ranges stand out.

Western Vista Trail
Would be considered steep by most. The footing is pretty good. A touch loose. A Paloverde tree semi-canopying the trail is fantastic in the morning light. Halfway up a small line of basalt surfacing. Better than expected views across I-17 and back across the Sonoran Preserves.

Two button cute college girls summitted just as I was turning around with bubbly hellos. The needle screeched across the bliss record passing a gangster sporting a movie prop-sized lollipop, blaring music. Pocket the judgment, a friendly hello too... The conservative dad-shirt with readers on the neckline gets 'em every time!

Bobcat Trail
Everything you'd expect in an access trail. Mildly interesting pile of smooth boulders. Imagine this stretch is a good place to keep your head buried in your cell phone starting or finishing.

All-in-all
The air seems cleaner vs Piestewa/SoMo. 100% hellos on two-three dozen passing. No clue if it's common but the mixed bag of hellos had a neighborhood vibe.

Kelly invited me to do this hike again. Hard to believe we last did it 7 years ago. Nice trails with some smaller peaks thrown in. Coolish temps for most of the hike. Good hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Clockwise and wanted to throw in Western Vista for my elevation. Stopped on the way along the Hawk's Nest Trail to catch some pics of the owl, no babies yet. Was surprised this afternoon how many people were out on the trail throughout my hike. Saw a couple trying to get a drone up south of trail near Cholla Saddle. That Western Vista is a challenging climb at the beginning but the last part is a lot easier. The summit still had tp here and there but at least the human waste was no longer visible. I could see there was a light dusting of snow on the highpoints of the Bradshaws.

As I continued on the Loop I did see a Roadrunner but wasn't able to get a great picture. As I topped out at the saddle and looked east I could see some snowy mountains and took some pics despite the bad visibility. I didn't think I'd have enuf energy to do the other Summit but surprisingly, I did. Plus the temps were so good; how could I not. I forgot that the last part to Dixie Summit is a bit steep. Ran into people coming and going on that one too.

Heading back to the TH I thot I heard an owl but couldn't see anything. Stumbled pretty good but didn't fall, I heard my brain relay, use your left wrist to break the fall . I did stop to catch a few more pics of the owl and pointed her out to some other hikers (David and Cheryl). They were pleased. They are new to the Valley from Cleveland OH. I told them to go to hikearizona.com for lots of other hiking options but meanwhile, gave them some other loop options in the area. There was a drone flying around as we continued back to the TH.

This is the first time I've done both summits on this Loop so that makes me :D .

WATCH: 5.84 miles. 149 avg bpm, 188 max (surprised at that). 71% at max, 18% at level 4, 10% at level 3 burning 929 calories. 62.5 degrees to start and 38% humidity (a little high for the afternoon). Finished at 4:28PM.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
