we always like to head south for holiday weekends so we don't have traffic woes going or coming back. we even got my lucky spot #13 in a campground that was about half full. on our way there, i was checking out various websites and noticed that the sierra vista sky island summit challenge was on saturday, but i also saw the route they were taking would only intersect mine on the spur up to the peak, so i decided saturday would be my day for the hike.

on the way up, i started noticing those tent caterpillars, then i noticed the larva sacks in the aspens. that stretch through the aspens is usually my favorite, but those tents made it creepy. i thought they were killing the aspens until i got back to camp and googled it. apparently the cycle is a year - the aspen leaves will be back next year. this year though... ew.

the disgust continued after the aspens when i came upon some migrant trash. i have seen that on miller before, but this was a first for me on carr. there were at least eight backpacks, dirty clothing, empty water bottles, and empty green chile cans. this was a dump spot for sure.

onward and upward, when i started up the carr peak spur, i said hello to many of the summit challenge people, and most didn't even make eye contact, let alone say hello. that was a hard hike though, and they still had miles to go. it was kind of cool to get the cowbell treatment at the peak, and the volunteers cheered me on, even though i didn't have a number to log for their challenge. i ran into one person i recognized from instagram and folks at the top were more talkative to be sure.

on the way down, there was a volunteer that was suffering from dehydration. her husband was on the phone with the EMTs and they were figuring out what to do. she had plenty of water, but apparently wasn't able to keep it down. they assured me that they were getting the help they needed, and i made my way down the rest of the way.

oh! apple watch stats: time: 3:02:13, distance: 6.03 miles, active calories: 855, total calories: 1,133, elevation gain: 1,961, avg. heart rate: 130 bpm, average pace: 30'12"/mile, weather: 73 degrees, humidity 6 percent (and super windy).

After an extended period of heavy monsoonal storms during July and early August, we finally got a break in the action, so figured I would spend a night camping at an old favorite place. I wasn't disappointed of course, as you can pretty much be assured of a fine display of summer wildflowers. :D Not many people in the campground made for a nice quiet night.

Second time in the Huachucas. Threw together a loop that'd see more Crest and get me on top of Ramsey and the brothers Pat Scott. Had a go from the Sawmill TH around 6am. Road is probably doable in low clearance, but I wouldn't if it were my investment.

Sawmill Trail up to Carr Peak Trail. Really just a connector for those of us looking to save a few minutes driving time. Most reliable spring en route was putting out a decent flow and should be for a couple months more.

Carr Peak trail swings up the mountain quickly. Good tread, least tree cover on the day. Carr Peak views hazy in the early morning. Offers the best angle on Miller and time to wonder about the ubiquitous zeppelin down in the foothills.

Down Carr to Crest then out and back to Miller. More good tread this time through the surviving forest of fir and pine. Up the ridge steeper and steeper as it nears the Miller Peak Trail. Passes through a huge, young grove of aspen. There is a lot to see along this loop come autumn, expanding my search for this year outside of Ramsey Canyon. Half the elevation gain is out of the way by the time Miller summit comes. Best views of day, apart from maybe Ramsey.

Crest all the way back to the Carr jct. Clouds started to coalesce over the mountains. Kept going to the Hamburg jct and the track became unfamiliar. Perfect weather for the money stretch of Crest Trail. From Granite Mountain to the end of Crest at the Fort Huachuca border, I'm not sure there's better hiking in the state. It is as good as anywhere. Shady in the fir, cold breeze, and warm intermittent sunlight. Will never take Wisconsin Canyon down again, it is so worth it to loop around to Pat Scott Canyon.

Got Pat Scott #1 on the way to Ramsey and #2 on the way back. #1 is several times better than #2, which is marked as Pat Scott Peak on most maps. Weather increasingly dramatic as I started the climb up Ramsey.

The topos I looked through differed on the whether or not there is a trail to Ramsey, and it turned out there isn't one. Ascending Ramsey was probably the hardest part of the loop. It is easiest to summit if you stay north of the ridgeline, otherwise it is a good bushwhack. Unfortunately, this involves trespassing onto military property. If stepping 50ft into the seldom traveled upper reaches of military land is a deal breaker, I would say the peak cannot be summited using the ridge I did. The only person I met all day was on the summit tinkering with a ham radio when I got there. He came straight up the ridgeline from the preserve, a shorter, more difficult, and legal route. I asked what he made of the military border, and he shrugged. There are no signs marking it, no signs forbidding passage, only a fence line that is broken where the deer cross and somebody has marked the route by hanging reflective yellow flags from tree limbs.

Pat Scott Canyon back down. Just as good as Wisconsin Canyon. Firs, pines, oaks, maples. Really might make a good fall loop if the timing is right. The canyons in the Huachucas steep as anything, but Pat Scott makes easy work of the quick descent.

After that Hamburg for about 5 minutes before Comfort Springs. Beautiful woods on the backside of Carr. Second hardest part of the day was ascending Comfort springs and getting back out of the canyon. Once down around the Hamburg Mine, there was still ~1200 feet to gain. Pushed through that last section looping back around. Only saw the one hiker, not too busy up there. Temps from 40s-70s.

we arrived about 5 pm on july 2, and found only two of the campsites taken where we like to camp, and our favorite spot was available, so we jumped on it. i didn't know whether i wanted to rest on the 3rd and hike on the 4th or the other way around. there was a chance that the weatherman randy was going to join for saturday, so i went ahead and procrastinated, which is a normal state for me. the evening of the 3rd saw the biggest gain in campers, and most decided to leave before the planned socially distant fireworks in sierra vista. i had some hearty oatmeal to start, and then i was on my way. so far away from the yelling kids, the unz unz, and the vehicle noise.

some people like to hike for fitness, and that's not me. some people like to hike for the camaraderie. also... not me. i want to get as far away from it all as possible, and that's when you'll find me smiling from ear to ear on the trail.

i started on the sawmill springs trail, which tries to kill me every time i hike up or down that damn thing, and after i got on the carr peak trail, i saw that someone had numbered the switchbacks in paint (vandals). i had noticed this the last time i hiked it, so this time i figured i'd go ahead an take a picture to document the destruction. i was also wondering how many switchbacks before i couldn't hear the screaming children, the vehicles struggling up the hill, or the unz unz of the vehicle's "music." the answer, for those of you wondering, is just two to not hear the children, and eight to not hear any signs of vehicles. and here i was debating whether or not to go all the way... i heard fellow hikers at switchback 9, and even with my slow hiking, it took another switchback to not hear those voices.

i didn't have very good cell service at the campsite, so i was planning on calling my mom when i got to the top for her birthday. i opened a celebratory beer and had a good conversation with my mom until it started raining. i cut the call short, downed the rest of my beer, and before i knew it, the rain had turned to hail. it wasn't too far along the trail, when the thunder and lightning started too. i'm glad i made it off the unprotected peak and down the trail a bit before that. the hike down was pleasant, with the softer dirt under my feet. the rocks were still unforgiving though. a few more breaks communicating with folks because i had cell service, and i eventually made it back to camp. it had rained there, too, and it continued to sprinkle on and off for a couple of hours.

i had great plans to watch the sierra vista fireworks from the picnic bench on top of the hill, but the view wasn't great, and it was too far away to see much of anything.

we packed up camp the next morning and had breakfast burritos in sierra vista before making our way back to the sweltering heat if the valley. the weekends always end too soon.

Wow. The Miller Canyon Route is the way to go! So many unique birds with crazy colors, so many waterfalls, it was a completely different world in that canyon! In this case, I would recommend an out-and-back in Miller Canyon. I did a loop up Miller and down Carr (but I missed the Sawmill Canyon turnoff so I had to walk the road longer then anticipated) but Miller was where the "wow" was at. Also the temperature would have been fine if I had cut the loop. I think it was around 95 deg when I got back to my car around 1:30 pm and I was feeling it big time. I parked at the Miller Canyon Parking but camped further down Miller Canyon Road the night before. It's super nice that you can camp anywhere on those lower canyon roads. I started around 6 am and there were already birders further up the trail. They must wake up really early! Everyone was super friendly. Met a couple backpackers up at Bathtub Spring too. The Huachuca Mountains are really special and I seem to fall in love with a different area every time I visit.

Plethora of deer ears underway. New Mexico Locust is blooming, some 50 ft trees too.

Initial climb up sweaty, bridge walk over delightful. Then heading up Miller was a half-mile cloud of dense gnats.

Upper Pat Scott is among the nicest stretches of trail in AZ. Passing below Hamburg it's more Pinal fab.

FR 368/Carr Canyon Road
Heading up the road looked pretty gnarly at one turn in the zig-zag switchbacks. My thought was I couldn't recommend a stock tire sedan or low clearance. Returning I didn't notice that crater dip or it was easier to get around than previously thought. JJ still thought little sharp rocks in the upper portion might not be good for stock sedan tires.

my annual birthday campout and associated hike (a week late)... didn't get reef townsite campsite 13 on friday, but since they make you pay the same for the second vehicle in a campsite the same... we had campsite 12 for friday night with two vehicles, and i moved over to campsite 13 for the second night so we wouldn't have any neighbors at least.

the hike... the boots are still comfortable and that first part of old sawmill spring trail still sucks.

the flowers... the deers ears were taller than me but not yet in full bloom. the generic yellow flowers near the top attracted all of the pollinators. so many butterflies!

since i hadn't been hiking in a while, it took me nearly all day... but i still hike circles around the sofa spuds. when i was enjoying my peak beer, there were a couple of young studs who were bragging at their time up at 53 minutes. i wouldn't have gotten any photos if i did it that way.

Wanted to hit Carr, Miller, and the Comfort Springs Loop in an effort to step my sky island game up.

Parked down the road from the Sawmill Springs Trailhead at the big Coronado NF sign a little after sunrise because I refused to take my sedan any farther up the road. On the way down the mountain later that day I passed a couple in a Dodge Challenger, so I was probably just being a wimp.

Started at Sawmill and with a summit of Carr. Passed three PhD students from IL and SC looking for Two Spot rattlers and others. They had snake sticks, or whatever they are called, and were looking to collect some venom.

On the trail between the Carr spur and the trail to Miller there must have been twenty-five white tail deer up and down slope.

On the way from Miller Peak to the Comfort Springs turn off I passed three men who were headed up to Miller. They asked about my route and I told them. They remarked that it was a long hike, which was nice to hear after being humbled by the trips many of the HAZ contributors regularly make.

About a mile down from Bear Saddle in Wisconsin Canyon, where on the topo the trail skirts below the 7800ft contour, I came twenty yards from two black bear cubs posed up in a tree next to the trail. Couldn't claw my camera out of my pack in time and they, as well as a third, bigger bear, scrambled down slope. With no pictures and the bears disappeared among the trees, I called out to keep them away.

Rest of the trip was a nice jaunt up and down through the woods on the backside of the mountains. There was a healthy breeze the whole trip, and to my absolute surprise the temperature never rose above 81F.

Only saw those two sets of hikers until I neared the campsites where families had made their way up for the 4th of July.

I posted the RS route and stats for the trip because I'm very skeptical of the AEG. Not sure I did enough rambling around areas of interest to gain almost 1000ft more than about what the route should have been.

With another blast of excessive heat occurring at home, I decided to bail and camp two nights at Reef Townsite. Got there around noon Sunday and left around 9 AM Tuesday. Stayed right around camp the whole time. No big hikes (I don't do many of them anymore), just relaxing and enjoying what nature provided for entertainment. Make no mistake, it was very warm even there at 7300 feet: high of 85 Sunday and 87 Monday. Monday was pretty brutal for that location, with no clouds until about 2 in the afternoon. There was no rain Sunday night, so the overnight low was pretty warm at 64 degrees. However, storms rolled through Monday evening, providing a nice cooling 0.25 inch rain in the 9 PM to 1 AM time period. Low Tuesday morning was 57 degrees. :D

[ youtube video ]

I was somewhat surprised to see how dry things looked when I got there. Usually by this far into the monsoon, there is a lot of wet ground and more vibrant plant action. But the rains have been deficient so far in Southeast Arizona, so that combined with the above normal temperatures have things stressed out. There was the usual flower display, but the plants were stunted and sparser than usual. Just not a good year (with deficient snowfall this past winter not helping). I noticed the same thing in the Chiricahua Mountains a couple weeks ago.

Sunday night there were two other sites occupied, but Monday night I had the place to myself. Lots of birders roaming around (I would say probably the majority were out of state folks based on license plates) all three days, with van loads of them Sunday and Monday. I saw the usual birds I see when there, in fact birds, squirrels, and a couple of deer were about it as far as wildlife goes. Seems like there is a lot less animal action there than in the past.

Back to Tucson Tuesday to endure one more day of the heat wave, which fortunately is now over thanks to a good soaking 0.49 inch rain Tuesday evening! :y:

the huachucas have been calling my name and i wanted to get down there before any potential forest closures. i figured there was a good chance of luring the Good Count Tacula down south too!

picture perfect day in every way. we banged out a big high country ramble. the carr/miller combo is always amongst my favorite sky island experiences. we solved the pat scott peak issue by just doing them both  . the trip down pat scott canyon was an unexpected wonderland of shade, big trees and even some water and flowers.

perfect day up there. thanks for coming down JJ :y:

This one was the good Doctors idea. I took off on Saturday and drove down through Nogalas, then ate dinner in Cananea and then up to Sierra Vista. Nick met me that morning at the hotel and we car pooled together up to the Old Sawmill Trailhead. We pretty much had perfect weather all day and this is always a great place to hike. First up was Carr Peak, then over to Miller and from there we headed over to Pat Scott. Nick said there was some controversy as to which peak was the true Pat Scott so we hit them both. As it would turn out there was a
"Sky Island Summit Challenge" there yesterday. Looks like we missed the crowds and had our own Summit Challenge. The hike down Pat Scott Canyon is always great and today was no exception.

Huge thanks to Nick for calling this one out. Was a great day to be in the Huachucas! :y:

The weather is getting warmer and time for me to switch from the Superstitions and find a new location to hike. The Huachuca Mountains were calling me again so I headed down there. It has been a few years since I was there hiking the Arizona Trail, so there are plenty of other trails to do. On this trip I decided to do the Comfort Spring, Hamburg and Carr Peak loop. I have seen multiple write-ups on this loop and it seems like a natural combination of trails. Also took a small excursion up to Carr Peak and the Old Sawmill Spring Trail.
I found the drive up Carr Canyon Road to be about as interesting as the hike. Quite a road going up the side of the mountain that would otherwise seem an unlikely place for a road. The road is narrow with lots of switch backs but I saw every kind of passenger car on this road, so 4WD and high clearance is not a requirement (at least when I went up). I started out on the Comfort Spring Trail which is a fairly easy walk with a little uphill section and a lot of gradual downhill to the Hamburg Trail. The one creek crossing on this trail which I am assuming is Carr Creek was flowing slightly and Comfort spring had about a gallon a minute flow. The Hamburg Trail is a steady uphill climb to the Crest Trail but seemed to go quite quickly. I can tell by the lack of pictures I took along this portion of the trail I was in the slow but steady mode till I got to the top. I love the views along the Crest Trail of the Santa Cruz Valley and also the ever present blimp above Fort Huachuca. A bit of trivia for those who remember the musical Oklahoma, The film location of the house in the movie was in the Santa Cruz Valley to the west of these mountains. The train depot was in Elgin. I had forgotten that the crest trail does some serious climbing to get up to the Carr Peak Trail, It wasn’t a terrible climb but when you’re expecting level walking it has a way of taking the wind out of your sails. I took an early lunch at the junction of the Crest Trail and Carr Peak Trail and for a half hour did nothing but eat and take in the views. The views don’t get much better than this. On the return trip down the Carr Peak Trail I took a side trip up to Carr Peak. Not a real impressive peak just a rounded knob of white limestone/marble stones or pebbles but the views are terrific. I could even see my jeep parked at the trail head below. All the mountains of southeast Arizona are visible (Maybe not all of them but more than I could name) and a few in Mexico. On the return trip down Carr Peak I took a side trip on the Old Sawmill Trail. Not a lot to see along this trail except Oak Grove Spring which had a trickle of water flowing. Got back to the trail head about 2:00 so I would have a little time to check out the Clark Spring and John Cooper Trails on the way down Carr Canyon Road.

Sunday morning dawned with low hanging clouds and full blown monsoon saturation. :D I wanted to do this hike, but was unsure about how early thunderstorms would become a problem. Went down and said goodbye to Cindy and Bobby, who were leaving (I would be on the trail when they drove out). That's when I decided to go for it, thinking the storms from the previous night would inhibit rapid development (I know...wishful thinking on a Sky Island  ). Roll the dice.

Turns out the heavy cloud cover worked to my advantage by keeping me cool on the way up. :) By the time I reached the peak I could hear thunder to the west over towards the Parker Canyon Lake area. Radar loop showed storm motion toward the west, so I was fine. But new stuff was beginning to blossom to the northeast, so I didn't stay on top long. The trip down was uneventful and actually downright fantastic, as I got to watch the storms growing and consolidating in the distance. :D Heard a little more thunder to the northeast (not close) and enjoyed a few raindrops along the way.

Carr Peak was kind to me today. Thank you old friend.

i like to camp up at carr canyon near my birthday, and this year is no exception. usually the monsoon season will have started, yet not enough into it to lift fire restrictions so many of the people usually drawn to the campgrounds at reef townsite and ramsey vista may not come. more for me.

we made our way down from phoenix on friday afternoon, picked up some subway sandwiches, and made our way up to my favorite campsite (reef #13). it's right next to the group site, so if the group site is unoccupied, we can sit out the storms under the large ramada there. there was a little storm as soon as we got in, but it stopped before sunset so we were able to get our tent up without rain falling on us.

saturday morning, bobby and i hiked up the old sawmill trail, then he went down the carr peak trail to ramsey vista campground and then back the road to camp. i continued to hike up. i haven't been hiking in a really long time, so i wanted to see what i could see. and see if my legs could make it. it turns out my legs still work. i didn't make it all the way to the peak, as i had friends coming up from sierra vista around noon and i didn't get an early enough start. i turned around and it seemed like i was so close. according to my fitbit, i had made it 1.6 miles from the sawmill trail junction, but you can't trust those things.

it turns out great minds think alike, and later that afternoon, randy pulled into the campground. in the evening, we had a great time catching up and drinking beers. then the rains came down and we had to scatter to our respective tents. we crossed paths in the morning before randy took off to hike the mountain, and bobby and i headed down to start the trek back to phoenix.

Spent a couple of days trying to fill in the missing middle of azt #1.

Wow, that drive to Ramsey Vista is really something :scared: Took Carr Canyon up to the crest but turned around short of Miller  Had dinner at La Casita :app:

Day 2 we came in from Sunnyside and I only made it up to just short of the Crest trail junction  x2

Bottom line is I still have about 5 miles of this section left to do ](*,) I’ll be back later or in spring.

Second annual September Huachuca trip for Joe and I. The flowers this year delivered just as they did a year ago. I don't recall there being as much water on the last trip as this time. It seems it was flowing at nearly every turn.

First was Carr Peak. Awesome as always. Then we hit Miller and again a great summit. Up top we chatted with a guy for a short bit and then continued on our journey. Most of the raspberries are gone at this point but I managed to find a few good ones along the Crest Trail.

We headed down the Pat Scott Trail this time rather than the Hamberg. Both are great in my opinion! After the hike we rolled into Sierra Vista for some good Mexican food at La Casita.

The grand Huachuca loop of peaks, wildflowers & enough water to filter all day. Heading in there were a lot of cars at a lower area. Only encountered one gentleman up top Miller. He called the trail scary vs previous years due to overgrowth and snake potential. The worst quarter mile section through berry bushes had been recently trimmed wide for half the section. So it seemed better than previous years. There was a lot of grass and other low bushes semi hiding the trail but I'd wear shorts again in a heartbeat.

Thought we found two kilos on Miller. I was on the horn making deals for server enhancements when jj delivered the bad news. Just two wet blankets wrapped well in baling twine.

My first time down Pat Scott and boy it delivered. The top is majestic views then it's a wonderful canopy along the roaring creek. We chased the google street view car around a bit on the way home.

We traveled top of the canyon then down. Sounded like a river at some of the falls. Disappears underground for a bit then comes back strong.
