Kelly invited us to join her on a hike to Maricopa Peak. We met at the “triangle lot” at 0630 and got started. I don’t think I’d been on the new section of the bottom of Alta before. Once we got on the original alignment, it was all familiar. I like the grade of the east side of Alta, it’s never steep and the trail is in good shape. Brief sections of shade were appreciated.

Spent a few minutes at the summit of Maricopa Peak before heading back down. Side trip over to Star Peak on our return. It was warm by this point, so I grumbled about any little elevation gain.

Always fun to hike with Kelly and Chumley, and a good workout.

met C and L at the triangle at 0630
we got going on the new piece of alta trail, soon joining with the original
took the spur to maricopa peak
hit both the north and south peaks, found the reference marks but not the benchmark
think that is long gone
on the return we went east along the ridgeline to star peak
after admiring landmarks on the west side, returned on alta
nice enough temps, a little shade
good to get out with todd and linda for a local hike
think we saw a total of four people

The 26 no motivation blues almost succeeded again. Air conditioning is nice, and bed is comfortable. But K promised pleasant temps would last for only one more day so I decided to take advantage of a hike in the 60s without spending a month's paycheck to drive up a hill.

Learned what the triangle is, and then met there. A real lot and trail spur to Alta were new to me. The alignment didn't work out for a view of the monster moonset but air quality was pretty good. I joined L in complaining about the heat as the sun was blasting even before 9.

All the fun reptile sightings were exhausted yesterday and I was treated only to a lot of dry dead grass and rocks.

After parking at Estrella Drive and 43d Ave, I hiked the full length of the Alta Trail, and then returned by the San Juan Road. I even covered the stub of the Alta Trail on the unnamed range west of the San Juan lookout. I stopped at my 3 geocaches on the route to check on their health. Ran into lots of really nice people as well.

Posted a Meetup for a potentially rainy day. Sign ups were slow till the forecast became favorable. Hit the 10 max out. Half actually showed. Nothing shocking there. 🤷‍♂️

Hike got off to a very rocky start as two participants started screaming at each other. SMH So we took National Trail-Bajada-Alta. Alta is where it gets steeper with switchbacks.

We then took a social trail to a side viewpoint. Next was the peak. Nice lil bonus challenge. After that, it was mostly chill. A couple of those who came out were complaining it was a bit hot. This was my return to PHX.

I decided to do something a little bigger since this may be the last cool day for the next six months.
There was only one other car in the lot when I started up Bursera. Chance of rain, so I brought my rain coat but didn't need it. Endured 27 drops of rain on the hike.
From Bursera I took Gila west to the National which has a new short reroute and some other trail maintenance done on it on the western portions.
I hiked to the end of the National and went up the Alta trail to Maricopa Peak. I finished the Alta and hiked east on Bajada to the Ranger trail. I hiked up the Ranger to the National, on to Goat Hill (of course), then down Ruins etc to complete the loop.
Ran into Mike, a friend, and then JJ in the parking lot. Good day. :)

Kelly wanted to hike the over and back on Alta again. The newish parking area and trailhead are a big improvement over parking in the triangle and hiking Bajada to reach Alta.
Nice sunrise. Temps were very comfortable. Lots of shade on the back side in the morning.
We dug around a bit looking for the benchmark on Maricopa peak. No luck. Saw a mangy coyote.
Good hike. Thanks Kelly! :)

In all my life I had not previously found the desire to walk the MHT perimeter trail. I was pleasantly surprised to start, but interest did wane a bit at the west end, which seems to be true for a few other trails in this preserve.

A trail that is not true for is Alta, which stays spicy all the way to the end, and is actually a quite enjoyable track the whole length. I didn't drop down to its eastern terminus today though, staying on the ridgeline all the way to a juicy steak back to the start.

It was a pleasant temperature and the visibility was outstanding. I passed 8 other hikers in total, which is definitely a change from my normal experiences on the south South range.

I've wanted to hike the full length of National Trail as an out-and-back for a while but had been looking for an open day with cooler temps, and today checked both boxes. I started from Pima Canyon TH by flashlight just after 5AM, and the petrichor was almost overwhelming after the rain yesterday, and trail conditions were in the damp-to-moist range over the first few miles. Nice city views, then even nicer sunrise views as I passed Buena Vista Lookout.

Not too many people out yet around Telegraph Pass, and I passed a few mines and then took a food/water break and shed a layer on Goat Hill at ~7:30AM. The weather was perfect for long hike, and I could still see my breath while I was up there. I'd never been west of Goat, so that was all uncharted territory as I continued west on National and lost a lot of elevation along the way. That side of SoMo is quieter but less interesting once it leaves the Gila Range...nice views of the Estrellas, but also the 202 and the casino.

I hit the west end of National at San Juan Lookout at 9AM and continued down toward the road, then came back and took another food/water break near the shelter. It was still early and I was feeling good, so I started up Alta to visit Maricopa Peak, the high point in the Hawk Tuah range. That was a steady gain all the way up, and I took a longer food/water break on top and enjoyed the views. I noticed two reference marks up there but couldn't find a benchmark...probably stolen.

Then the long hike back, down Alta and east on the full length of National. The stretch going back up to Goat Hill felt long and steep, and I shed the final extra layer around mile 23. I had to dodge more people near Telegraph, then the trails were quieter again. I took a final break near Buena Vista Lookout, then finished it off, getting back to the starting point just before 3PM.

Fun day seeing some new terrain on the west side of SoMo and getting reacquainted with the tail end of my playlist with the longer day :). The high temp was ~65°, about as nice as it'll get this time of year for a long SoMo hike. This exceeded my previous longest hike by 10+ miles, but I felt good and didn't have any cramping...carried 223oz of liquids, drank a little over 150oz. The storms yesterday left Four Peaks and various ranges covered in snow...I really wished I'd brought a real camera to get better pictures--it's tempting to go back out tomorrow just for that.

Kelly wanted to hike the Alta trail, and since it's been a while I reluctantly relented
The gate off of Central Ave doesn't open until 5 AM then you drive a few miles to the "triangle" where the new parking lot is located.
Sunrise was pretty. We also saw a couple small rainbows. A speckled rattlesnake made an appearance.
We stopped by Maricopa and Star Peaks before descending. Nobody else on the trails.
Solid hike. Thanks Kelly! :)

On the 2nd day of my trip, I decided to hike this peak and if there was time I would do Goat Hill. I started at the end of Estrella Rd. at the same place I was at the previous day when I hiked San Juan Hill. I hiked up to San Juan lookout but this time I took the Alta trail South then East. At the start of the trail, there was a warning about beehives. After hiking up about 1/2 I ran into a couple hiking down that warned me about a beehive where the bees were a bit aggressive. The women said a bee got into her hair and she was able to shake it out but not so easily. They said the hive was in a small cave area. I continued up the trail looking for it and didn't see the area they were talking about.

Eventually, the trail got up to the ridgeline and I followed it until I could see Maricopa peak. There seemed to be 2 high points as I was approaching - one on the right and one on the left. The trail was in great shape the entire way up including the spur trail which I needed to take to get to the summit. At the Southern summit, I found a container with a notebook that was meant to be a geocache registry. I signed it and then went over to the Northern summit which I found another registry. I signed both because it was hard to tell which point was higher.

On the way down, I ended up finding the beehive which was on the South side of the trail, only about 8 feet off the trail. I saw many bees swarming around it so I kept moving quick. I saw at least 4 pieces of honeycomb inside a slot between the rocks. I had what I believed to be a guard bee chase after me. After an incident at McGee ranch several years ago, I know how this works. Guard bees fly into you and deposit a pheromone on your clothing. Then, they fly back to the hive and signal other bees to chase after you. You're only really safe once you're far enough away from the hive, which is sometimes 1/4 mile away. One bee landed on my shirt right next to my backpack strap. It was buzzing and making a lot of noise. I swatted it away and it returned again. This time it landed closer to my shoulder, so I smacked it with my left hand. I got a few quick photos and a video from about 30 feet away from the hive and then got the hell out of there. On the way down the trail, another bee was buzzing around my hat but I swatted it away. This could have been one of the other guard bees. This one was lucky not to be killed ;-). His other guard friend got an early retirement but unfortunately didn't get to enjoy his golden years, sad to say. What kind of life it is working tirelessly for some queen bee, anyway?

Beehive location: 33.327836, -112.134606

By the way, there was such a difference in moving time vs elapsed time because I stopped to talk to people on the way up and down a few times. I warned one other couple about the hive on the way down.

Stats:
----------
Total distance = 5.65 mi RT
AEG = 1557 feet
Strava moving time = 2 hrs 41 mins
Strava elapsed time = 4 hrs 41 mins

I sort of underestimated this loop and hiked until dusk... But still didn't miss dinner. :) The Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter was more hilly and challenging than I'd remembered. It's very similar to Bajada (better isolated trail) and the Desert Classic (not as good as either). For me, Alta including Maricopa Peak is the second best route in SoMo after MLC because of the lack of mountain biker hoards. National near San Juan Lookout had some trail reworked, essentially redirected out of the ditches, which was needed. The Alta and Ma Ha Tauk trails have been rerouted or relabeled some, respectively. The new parking area is open, I think labeled as San Juan Bike Hub. Surprisingly nice temperature and breezes for late March, but the wildflowers in this area aren't as prolific as last spring.

Opted for a large loop in the western part of South Mtn. Started from the Bursera TH a few minutes after 0800 and headed up Lost Mine. East on National, with a side trip to Goat Hill. Down Ranger. Cut over to Bajada and took that to the new lot.

Paused for a moment to take a phone call from my real estate agent. She wanted to show me a house via video call at 4pm, yeah, that’ll work, as long as I don’t stop moving. Up Alta, with a side trip to Maricopa Peak. Came down the west side of Alta. Saw a transient camping near the bottom of the trail. He was kind of rude, so I texted a ranger about him. Should’ve kept his mouth shut and I would have ignored his presence.

Got onto National. I hate those western miles of that trail. Noticed a new rerouting of Gila, so I hopped onto that. It’s not fully rerouted yet, a portion still crosses private property, but it looks like they are working on it. Got onto Bursera at the big wash, then Bursera Canyon to finish out the loop. Warmer, and less clouds than I was hoping for, but a good day.
