Quick morning hike in the supes! 😁☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ Saw 2 rattlesnakes and a covey of quail in the last half mile. 😁😁🥰🥰🐍🐍💚💚 Few people out on the trail, but the heat is really culling the amount. There were maybe 5ish cars each at the horse lot and first Water TH. There were way more people at crosscut TH.

There are a lot of bees at the main big campsite by the wash in the hackberry spring area, and also just past the area where the trail crosses the wash before heading uphill. We saw one lone camper and their pup.

Rougher road once you get past the first couple routes, but possible to do in a low sedan. Nice easy trail with seasonal water. Very dry right now, no water seen, and flora all looks pretty thirsty. Saw a phainopepla. 10/10 hike after it rains, but a bit less impressive when super dry.

Quick hike to hackberry springs. Garden Mesa is sad. Hackberry springs area is slightly better, with some unburned areas.

First Water lot had lots of people, but didn't see too many people on the trail until later. As we drove out, there were lots of people in every parking area on first Water road. Glad we went earlier! Gorgeous weather!

1045 start. I queued up a nice easy loop hike from the Needle Vista lot to Hackberry Spring, up to Garden Valley and back via Second Water trail and the Horse Lot.

Then I got silly and added a second loop with an off trail trek across Black Mesa to Second Water Canyon, which pretty much negated the little saunter I had in mind.

The view east from the top of Black Mesa almost made it worth the effort. While in Second Water Canyon I came across some old pipes and a spring box that I didn’t expect to see.

It was chilly out with clear skies, just a wisp of breeze. Didn’t see many people today.

My niece wanted to experience a hike in the Supes. So we finally came upon a good day that was available to both. It was a fantastic day, if anything a bit on the cool side. We were early enough that we saw very few people on the trail. Not really any wildlife. A few wildflowers. But the Supes made a mark upon her. She will be back.

I had not been to the Supes in a while so we decided to head to the First Water TH today.

We went to Hackberry Spring and to the summit of Hackberry Mesa, and on the way back added the Black Mesa Loop -- this was a big clockwise loop.

From the TH, we went back toward the Horse Lot and took a trail over to Hackberry Spring. This was the first time that I had been to Hackberry Spring. Then we continued on the trail for a ways, and then went off-trail up the west side of Hackberry Mesa to the summit. It was a fairly easy off-trail I thought. We spent a little time at the summit, and then went east to a saddle, and then dropped down to Garden Valley and made our way to the Second Water Trail. From there we went to the Black Mesa Trail, and took it to the Dutchman Trail and then back to the TH.

I enjoyed Hackberry Spring and Hackberry Mesa. Hackberry Mesa apparently doesn't get much love -- only 3 parties had signed the summit register since I was there 1.5 years ago. I didn't really enjoy the Black Mesa Loop all that much -- I don't think that there has been any tread work done on the Black Mesa Trail or the Dutchman Trail in probably 2-3 decades.

There wasn't anything coming out of the pipe at the spring, but there was a small pool of water above it. I don't think that I would have drank the water though.

Ten by nine. The ridges were warm, the valleys cool and then it just got hot. As for bushwackiness, this route was relatively low-key by Supes standards. I've definitely done scratchier hikes within this wilderness. The official route was somewhat weird, but good enough to suggest the general way. Leaving Dutchman, we mostly stayed in the wash at first, which seemed much easier than 'literally' following the wacky black-dashed line. Also added on AZLumberjack's Peak 2891 Saddle for poos and giggles. : wink : Not too shabby.

Beautiful day, not too many people for a nice day in winter. Still a bit of snow on north side of superstition from the storm earlier this week.

I have been wanting to try this hike for a while, and today turned out to be the day to do it. I got the idea for this from a hike that @azhiker456 did last fall.

This was basically the Black Mesa Loop with sidetrips to four peaks along the way:
1) Hackberry Mesa
2) Black Mesa 2850
3) Peak 3097
4) Yellow Peak

From the First Water TH, I went to the horse lot, and then took the Hackberry Spring Trail. Once I got close to Hackberry Mesa, I went off-trail up the SW side of the mesa. It was a bit steep in places, but not bad. I enjoyed the views on the mesa, and then descended SE at first and then more south to go through Garden Valley down to the Second Water Trail My descent was easier than the ascent.

Once on the Second Water Trail, I went to the Black Mesa Trail, and took it up to Black Mesa 2850. This is the highest point on topo maps of Black Mesa, but it looks to me like the highpoint of the mesa is on the west side.

I then descended from Black Mesa, and went up to Peak 3097. It was a gentle grade up to Peak 3097, but there was knee high grass (or higher in some places) with ankle busting rocks underneath, so the going was fairly slow. Views were nice atop Peak 3097, and I had a lunch break there.

I descended back to the Black Mesa Trail and then busted up the south slopes of Yellow Peak. This was the most challenging of the four peaks, but it was a fun climb up. I enjoyed the views at the summit, and then went back down to the Black Mesa Trail. From there, I made my way to the Dutchman Trail, which I took back to the First Water TH.

I enjoyed hiking to these peaks -- Black Mesa was my least favorite, and it would be hard to say which of the other 3 that I liked the best.

The hike back on the Dutchman Trail was a bit of a death march, and was my least favorite part of the hike.

What to do, what to do. Then Ambika called as she just realized it was a 3 day weekend. I had two choices in mind and we went with this one as I was going to go to cousin Connie's later and then Ambika decided we should have lunch with Trish as well. So after meeting up at Q-T off of Idaho, we headed via the lumpy road to the Horse Lot at First Water. However, we would discover that there was plenty of parking at First Water even at 9:30 in the AM. I was quite surprised by that.

Anyway, we geared up and took the connector trail to the main TH. It was a bit nippy with the wind blowing but once we headed on down the trail, it seemed to subside so we took off our vests. This first part of the trail is so pretty. We encountered a few hikers here both coming and going. At First Water Creek there were still a few pools of water and it was running. At the second creek crossing there was also quite a bit of water before you head up the hill to Garden Valley. The trail previous to the creek was very hard. The backlighting made the grasses real pretty.

We encountered a few backpackers as we started heading north. One of them commented about it being chilly; Thus validating my decision not to backpack with ABC this weekend. As you approach the top of the hill to Garden Valley there are now stone steps including some cobblestone :o . Oh my, what is our western Superstition Wilderness coming to? I'm sure it helps mostly for the downside and erosion. They were nicely done.

We looked toward the arch further north as we headed east to the heart of the Valley. The scenery is very nice thru here and as you turn north again. We did come upon the muddy section that was still somewhat muddy but it was easy to go around. I've been up here when that wasn't the case. The horses make pot holes through this. As we reached the furthest side of the valley the scenery is more intense with the lichen covered rockery and it's more brushy and cactusey. Speaking of saguaros, fat and sassy they seem to be. We didn't see any hikers during our hike through the Valley. The view to the beautiful little Four Peaks at the top of the hill makes for some awesome pictures. :)

And then down the hill we went. There has been some trail adjustment since I was last here in Dec 2016, ironically with Ambika. We encountered a few hikers and their dogs here but no one else until we passed a campsite down at First Water. The view to the Mazzies and the Four Peaks are the eye catchers on this trek down to First Water. We could smell the campfire smoke as we approached and wondered how well the fires would be put out down here.

We found a couple places to get down to the creek which still had quite a few big pools and lots of running water; always fun to enjoy the look and sound. And that big boulder that stands up in the middle of the creek still impresses me. As we got closer to Hackberry Spring we encountered some horseback riders. The horses were none too keen on crossing this part of the rocky/watery creek and it was a tad slippery for them.

And from here on out, there were a lot more people. We continued up the creek toward the ranch still encountering a lot of water considering how long it had been since our last rain. A couple of those drainages between the slabs had to be pretty full and hard to traverse a couple weeks ago. We still had to skirt pretty high in one section. But it was pretty awesome nonetheless. We passed by the ranch, sorry to see that the windmill's top is no longer attached.

As we approached the Horselot a small gaggle of girls asked us what was best to do that would be a short hike. So we suggested they take the connector trail to the main TH and then start heading down the trail and just go so far for an hour or so and come back. (Hopefully they would remember which way was back). Makes you wonder how many other people just come out here with no idea and wing it. Hope they had fun.

Quick jaunt through the Supes with Angela on a last minute hike for the long weekend. Lots of green, lots of water but no muck in the Garden Valley flats! The sounds of flowing water is always a delight in the desert!

Started off with Joe almost getting ran over in the First Water parking lot :o . Enjoyed this loop with a little extra side excursion that was cool too. Joe's colorful commentary was entertaining as well. Scouts were camped all around the spring. Water looked pretty good to filter. Liked the overcast skies. Nice first hike for the day. Thanks gents!

After my muggy hike yesterday the drop in humidity provided a welcome change. I waited until noon for the humidity to drop and it was well worth the wait. With humidity in the teens, a brisk breeze and dressed in pre-dampened EnduraCool gear, even at 102° there were times I was shivering.

I parked at Horse Staging, headed toward First Water along the Equestrian trail, climbed toward the south, followed the ridge to the west, dropped down to the north, followed a series of game trails, old pack trails and finally old roads before circling back to the lot. Unlike yesterday, I not only saw no deer, but wildlife at all. Oh well, it was a nice short loop with a few extra challenges.

Solo workout hike on a Saturday. Saw Wally near Hackberry Spring & chatted for a few. Continued the loop and topped out on Black Top Mesa where I talked to a fella from Alberta that is a snowbird. He wasn't familiar with the glyphs so I showed him them & told him about Jack Carlson's books. We had a nice chat and then I started my return. Nice day out.

A nice jaunt through the NW Supes. Left the Horse Lot following the drainage at the NE corner of the Lot to First Water, then headed S past the corrals to the 2nd Water trail. On to the Dutchman through 1st Water TH back to the Horse Lot. Limited trail company to less than a dozen. We did meet a lost Family of 4, 1/2 mi from Horse Lot and gave them guidance and water to the Lot TH and back to their car at 1st Water TH. They were very relieved to learn where they were and how to reach their car. Tis the season to aid those Novice hikers and avoid the news or SAR calls.

We hoped for a wet hike in and around First Water Creek with plenty of running water but we were disappointed... we had a few sprinkles at Horse Staging Lot (muddy and very slick) and about 2 minutes of light sprinkles in the middle then dry the rest of our loop.

We followed the trail in the narrow wash from Horse Staging out to First Water Creek, headed toward Hackberry for a ways, then turned around and followed the eastern part of the creek back to Second Water Trail then around past First Water TH and finally followed the horse trail back to Horse Staging. The last part of the horse trail has had some pretty heavy maintenance.

While there was some running water in First Water Creek... it was barely enough to get my new Merrell Moab Mid Waterproof boots wet. But enough to make for slippery slick-rock.

Just a few cell phone pics today...

Just checking out the rains of the past week :D

It's supposed to be a nice hiking-weather weekend so I got an early start and headed for the First Water Horse Lot Trailhead to head down into the First Water Basin to see what the rains had left behind. There was already a few cars in the lot when I arrived so I talked with one of the guys to find out what's going on. I was told that the Boy Scouts and the Jr ROTC were going to be out for an Orienteering course, "but they won't be a bother to hikers" :o ya-sure.

I was on the trail heading down the narrow canyon route before sunrise and the weather felt cool under the clear, cloudless sky. An unnamed wash feeds into the First Water Creek at the next bend and I followed it up. Lots of water filled the pools but no water was flowing between them, sure looks refreshing to see the standing water though :app:

Once the sun began to light up the tops of Little Four Peaks, I began hearing voices, they were loud and they were everywhere.... so much for a quiet hike. I wandered around the pools until the sun was lighting up the valley and began heading upstream, away from all the voices. Awesome weather, finally, for a short walk in the desert.

I ended up at the First Water Trailhead to find four Forest Service Volunteers manning the parking lot, they must be expecting a busy day. Walking down the road to the Horse Lot, I could hear those voices again but when I entered the parking lot I was surprised to see a dozen large school busses and several more smaller busses filling the lot. Teen's were everywhere, hundreds of em, checking out their cell phones, throwing footballs, and just mingling around.... and it was only 0900, and more busses were arriving.

Good timing Jack, finished my hike just in the nick of time :y:

Morning hike out to Yellow Peak. This was my first time on the summit. The hike up is fairly straightforward. The only issues are all the foliage and loose rock. My going was relatively slow especially on the descent. The rest of the hike was uneventful.

Every time I drive down First Water Road I swear it's going to be the last time. The road is just not passenger car friendly. Yet here I was again, going on another easy day hike in the Supes. I followed a narrow wash out to First Water Creek, visited Hackberry Spring and then came back past the old ranch. Hackberry Spring is barely dripping, but there's lots of water in the creek. Wildlife encounters included a four foot coachwhip sleeping on First Water Road, millions of tadpoles and a Giant Desert Water Bug that I caught in my lizard net. That's one big, ugly insect!
