South Mountain treat! I wanted something close to home and had planned on doing my “go to” trail….Hau’Pal. Got to the 19th Ave TH a bit prematurely and had to park on the street. Of course, as I was walking up the road the Ranger passed me to unlock the gate. :? I got on the trail a little before 4:30 and I could already see headlamps breaking through the cloudy mists atop the Hau’Pal ridgeline. Someone had gotten a very early start! I hadn’t expected clouds for my morning hike and I was surprised at how they descended down the mountain. I was about half way up the trail when my headlamp became annoyingly limited. It was fine for illuminating the trail directly in front of me, but it was a white haze if I looked anywhere else. As I climbed the haze changed from a fog to a fine mist to a light sprinkle as I neared the top. There wear some pretty cool views of the valley initially, but once I entered the cloud that was all I saw. This was a fantastic twist to the usual humdrum of this hike. The Hau’Pal is steep and rocky in places (the ridgeline isn’t much better) and I did not fancy descending them in wet weather, so I opted to hike over to the Alta and take that trail down.

I’ve hiked the Alta a few times over the years and I’ve noted the old alignment frequently as I passed by the their turnoffs. Today, as I was hiking down I noticed a viewing platform that I don’t recall seeing before. So on the way down I followed the old track just to check it out. The “old track” is grown over, but the platform is still in good shape. It even has a rock bench. Hard to believe that I hadn’t noticed this before. Counted numerous ocotillos (around 15) that have gone down in the last few months. Brutal! :( Even with the mild winter temperatures and the pleasant day of rain you can see the desert is suffering.

On the way back towards the TH I took a hodgepodge of trails. From the Alta, I took the Max Delta for about .5 miles to get to the old Derby Loop Loop (now part of the Las Lomitas Trail). From the Derby, I took the Ranger to the Crosscut and then the Crosscut to the Hau’Pal which I took back to the TH. The skies had cleared up as I made my way on the Max Delta, but clouds were rolling in again from the east as I hiked the Crosscut. Pretty neat to be able to “watch” the weather. There were quite a puddles on the Delta and the Derby, but the trails were in good shape between the puddles. Only saw 5 hikers; 1 on the Alta and 4 as I was finishing up. Only wildlife were quail. What a great day for a hike!

Totally unrelated side note: 10:46 Sunny has fledged! :y:

Early morning jog at SoMo. Wanted to do a loop involving the Derby Loop. Got to the Max Delta TH around 5:30. Went in on the Max Delta and then took what was once the Derby Loop Trail (it has now become part of the La Lomitas Trail) over to the Ranger juncture. From here I continued on the La Lomitas and took that to where it use to exit at Scorpion Gulch. Nice little loop with minimal elevation. Had the trail to myself. No wildlife.

Short hike with wife. Did a loop starting from the Ranger TH. Parking was limited due to the National Trail Trek Event. Did a loop going CCW involving several trails - Ranger, Cross Cut, Max Delta and Derby Trail. Temps were a little chilly, but nice clear skies. Pleasant hike with the wife.

Nice ridgeline route. Ticks two of the three SoMo mountain ranges. Completed sub 4h starting near the Ranger TH. I again forgot to restart GPS tracking after our summit beers, so my route is ~3¼ miles short. :(

Joined a meetup for this outing. They were doing a loop hike connecting with national & kiwonis. Doing the loop in reverse of what others seemed to be doing. This took out the steeper portion early.

When we reached Kiwonis TH, I veered off to double the mileage. My plan failed. I then just checked out trails with no plan in place. I even attempted to climb up to the towers. Scaled the mtn only to find a 2nd 1 behind it with a steep drop off inbetween and a busy road near the top. Another failure for me during this outing.

I then ended up at the same TH I originally broke off from. Needless to say, no one should follow my route. 😒 I finally added 1 more easy trail to bump up the mileage a bit only to end up on yet another trail which had me wandering around even longer. At least I spotted a cute baby coyote after returning to my 🚗

A quick hike in the morning with a colleague. New favorite loop of mine, I'll do this one again. The Alta going up from Bajada is a stellar trial. T-bone is probably easier going up than it is going down but I like this trail too. Temps were getting warm by 8ish, finished up right before 9am, didn't see very many people per the usual.

This is just an old triplog of a nice short hike which I have used as part of my training routine for the summer months coming up. One of my favorite loops to complete that's close to my home.

Praxis must have exploded, as most of what I hiked was undiscovered country, for me. Or, it felt like it. A big loop in warm weather, counter clockwise. Aside from motorists at the San Juan Lookout, no one was seen from the time I clear the T-Bone,all the way until I got back to the lookout about near the Kiwanis. No other hikers. Mostly empty on the flat, too. Hot, dry, beautiful.

Short after work run. Had thought of doing a loop with the Crosscut Trail. But I realized as soon as I began that I was not starting off in an ideal spot to do the loop I envisioned. Started off from the horse corral (where the Ranger Trail begins). This is the midway point for the Crosscut and I always seem to forget that until I get on the trail. Anyway, I did the loop that I pictured and claimed the Derby Loop trail for my trail write up. Started from the horse corral going west on the Crosscut.. They have done A LOT of "rescaping", where they have blocked off user trails and revegetated or "speed bumped" the land. There use to be multiple routes up to the Ma Ha Tauk Trail. Now there is only one. Took the Crosscut to the T Bone Trail. This juncture is unsigned and this part of the trail is all relatively new...last two years. There are ribbons and temp signs that got me up to the Ma Ha Tauk. (This part of the trail is the eastern end of the T Bone Loop Trail (formerly known as the Warrior Trail in HAZ)). Followed the Ma Ha Tauk to where it connects the Max Delta Trail. On it for just a short time to reach the Derby Loop. Nice short trail that connects to the Ramger Trail which I took back to my car. No wildlife. Saw 3 hikers on the T Bone.

I started at the Holbert/Box Canyon trailhead. Took it to the end where it intersects Los Lomitas. Took it to the southern end where I picked up Derby Loop. Took Derby Loop to the intersection with Max Delta. Too it to the North end. Cut across wash and parking lot to car.
At one point I saw a Coyote. I tried to get to higher ground to see if I could see where he went. Wound up eye to eye with a squatting Coyote  . I turned away to give him privacy. When I turned back he was dragging his butt on a South Mountain paved road like a pet dog on carpet :o . True story! You never know what you might see on or off trail.....

First run in quite awhile. Cobbled a loop out of several trails at South Mountain Park. With all the trails out there, the options are limitless. Started from the Ma Ha Tauk TH and did a loop involving T Bone - Max Delta - Cross Cut - Ranger - Derby - Max Delta (out to the Bajada) and then back on the Max Delta to the Ma Ha Tauk which I took back to the car. TH parking was very full when I got there but only saw three other hikers doing the loop. Great weather, though war for October. No wildlife.

I needed a hike. HAZ site was saying I had hiked 57% of the trails in SM. So I figured it was time to try out some of the missing trails. Mike was also up for a hike, so we met at the 19th Ave TH at 6:30am. Headed out the Ma Ha Tuak trail, then onto the Derby Loop, on to the Los Lomitas, even threw in the Judith Tunell, over to the Max Delta and finally the T-Bone back to the TH. The 7 miles was interesting, but I needed some elevation which is missing from most of these trails.

So seeing as the Warrior was right there... Mike said he had somethings to do, so he took off. Man that Warrior is a butt kicker, especially after 7 miles of other trails. It took almost exactly 2 hours to hike the 7 miles. The Warrior took me 10 minutes less than 2 hours just to do the 1.5 miles to the Alta and back. But it's done.

No other people on the trails, at least seen by us. We saw several cotton tails, quail and a few Jacks. But my high point is after several hundred miles of hiking in SM I saw a fox today. Looked up just to see him running beside the trail and a leap over the edge. This guy had very red fur, including a full furry red tail. Really surprised me.

Almost no wildflowers.

First time hiking from the 19th Ave trail head which meant a few new trails. We started out on the steep, get the blood flowing, Warrior trail, then traversed the ridge line on Alta, picked up National, down Ranger, used Derby Loop as a connector, then brought it home via Ma Ha Tuak. Sweet loop, saw very few, and stayed dry.

Wanted to get a run in involving the Derby Loop. Started from the T-Bone, then Max Delta, CrossCut, Ranger, Derby Loop, Max Delta and finally Ma Ha Tauk to complete the loop. Got out there around 5pm so I had the sun at my or was in the shade the entire time. No wildlife, but the Ma Ha Tauk was busy.
