A group of us drove the gnarly FR 341 to the north end of the single track along Cottonwood creek. We did tread work, brushing and cleared 2 deadfall. Encountered a rabid fox along the creek: snarling and trying to bite.

I've been battling a cold but still wanted to get out, so I opted to finish up a section of the Cottonwood Trail. I've hiked in Cottonwood Canyon from FR 83 previously but had not done the Frazier TH section. While technically not in the wilderness boundary it is still considered a Supes hike and is in Carlson's book so I wanted to check this section off. The trail is well groomed from Frazier as it goes over several small ridges and down into Cottonwood Creek. From there it connects with the Arizona Trail and turns into a road until you reach the corral and water trough, which was my stopping point. Even though it was only a 5-mile hike it was all uphill and I topped out at just over 1,000 AEG which was plenty for my congested self .

A group of us (by FS request) checked the AZT damage from the Black fire. This included the north end of Two Bar ridge and Cottonwood canyon. The damage is mostly burnt scrub and parts of the canyon survived very well. Of course, the issue will be rain and the subsequent high erosion that will cause much more damage. We cleared one large deadfall.

A group of us cleared brush at the south end of cottonwood trail #120 for about a mile.
Pretty nice weather: about 70 at the start and mid 80s at the end with a strong breeze.

Haven't been logging most of my hikes recently due to a busy schedule, and the fact that most of the hikes are pretty well documented and I have already done and documented them. However, this one is part of the Arizona Trail Passage 19, and we wanted to do this. There isn't a lot of details on this hike, so I'll add some more information.

We started at the Cemetery trailhead and hooked into the AZ trail, this shortly joins the Cottonwood trail.

For the hike we took it broke down into the following segments (rough distances):
1. 0.5 miles trail
2. 3.0 miles road
3. 2.5 miles streambed (Cottonwood canyon)
4. 1.0 miles trail (to Tule Canyon trail/road intersection)

Views were nothing special. I doubt we will do this one again, It may be a good option during wildflower season. Nothing super special about the hike.

Another goal of the hike was to go to the Tule intersection where we were considering doing the tule loop hike at a later (AZ trail/Tule Canyon/Two Bar Ridge). It was disappointing to see the end point/intersection was a road, that that makes me wonder how munch of this loop hike will be on roads. Don't like hiking on dirt roads... I'll need to investigate further to see if this is worth hiking.

Stars seemed like they finally aligned when one of my friends set up a camping weekend at Oak Flat, and I took advantage of the proximity to run my next AZT passage. Dropped off a car at the end in the AM, back to Oak Flat, and then took my Jeep up to Rogers Trough. When we got to Rogers Trough, we found that my friend whose car was at the end left his key back at camp, so we had to scramble. Decided that I'd just run it myself and he's drive my Jeep to the end later, and head south on the trail.

Got a late-ish start, so the question was not if I'd need the flashlight, but for how long.

Reavis Trail had a lot more deadfall than when I was last up there, smashed my knee on one while carelessly climbing over it. Felt like it might be an issue with ~25 miles to go at that point. Just before Reavis, I took my first (and only) break to fill up water and make some electrolyte drink.

Once on Reavis Gap trail, it was new territory for me, and with how rocky it was, it was hard to do more than 3mph or so. Two Bar got a little better, but at this point I was on a 10 hour pace, and strongly considered bailing at Tule. Didn't get any response to texts by the time I got to the junction, so decided I had to follow through.

Things got a lot smoother (for the most part) once on Two Bar though, and outside of the two climbs, 4mph was the norm. Started getting dark in Cottonwood Creek, and about half way down or so, it was dark enough to make it a little tricky. Saw a few groups of campers on this stretch.

Back on the Jeep road, got a text from my friend who decided he wouldn't be running after all, but left my Jeep key in a spot so secure that you certainly wouldn't see it unless you happened to be shining a light in the general direction of the Jeep. The uncertainty of not knowing whether I'd still have a car when I got to the end made things a little more exciting.

To my surprise, it was still there, and all was good. The 2nd half turned out to be much faster than the first. Inventory of nutrition consumed was a single Nuun tablet and a single caffeinated Gu gel, and a little over a liter of water.

Hiked from FR83 to the road and turned around. This is a fairly nice trail along a riparian drainage with intermittently flowing water. Saw a medium sized bear that quickly dashed away through the underbrush.

This area seemed to have completely escaped damage from the fire. Sadly, although there are some cottonwoods, there really aren't that many of them left alive. In contrast there are some magnificent stands of Saguaros.

Someone put a lot of work into getting the large tank and smaller cattle trough in working order at the lower trailhead.

I spent some time removing all the deadfall from the trail, even got wise and brought a small handsaw to make this sort of thing easier, having learned my lesson a few weeks ago. The trail really still needs someone to go through and cut back the catclaw.

This is approximately the area in Cottonwood Creek that you will first start to observe surface water. Based on flows lower down this spring looks like it puts out a lot of water, but at the spot the spring is at you will only find a few tiny pools with the rest of the water staying underground.

john and i wanted to get this one done before it got too warm
@juanjaimeiii generously shuttled us to rogers trough saturday morning - thank you!
he also hiked in three miles with us before turning back
got going around 0745 with temps already warm enough for t-shirts
down rogers canyon, up reavis ranch trail
took a quick break at the saddle, then down to the ranch
quite a bit of burn in this area, but better once near reavis ranch
stopped where reavis creek crossed reavis gap trail, then up the first big hill
filtered water at pine creek, where we talked to two thru-hikers and their two section buddy
we would cross paths with them a few more times
originally planned to camp at high point, so we loaded up with water
two bar has some wonderful views, but also two big uphills
we passed the thru-hikers, as the buddy was struggling with the temps
the last climb was a challenge for me; think i just needed some fuel - felt fine after a lara bar
lower on water than we wanted, too early to stop, windy conditions and just one exposed campsite had us reconsider the original plan
we decided to press on to cottonwood spring, and rolled in right at dusk
filtered water, found a decent campsite, set up and ate dinner in the dark
the thru-hikers camped nearby, arriving about an hour after we did
overnight temps were warm
up around six, we took our time since janie wasn't going to pick us up until 1400
got going around 0800 after a third cup of john's coffee and set out down cottonwood trail
flowing water, very lush corridor with saguaros on the hillsides above, pretty area
lots of good water sources, both in the creek and in several stock tanks
road walk for awhile, then on the thompson trail
some ups and down while going around several drainages, finally finishing at the bridge
we were able to get janie a text to pick us up earlier, and had time for a dip in roosevelt lake before she arrived
big first day and an easier second, which is how we often do these passages
solid hike with several new trails for me, once on two bar ridge
nice variety of terrain
new tent and quilt on this trip
pack weight was 14-18 pounds, depending on how much water
brought the right amount of clothes and food
need a couple little gear tweaks and better organization
always good to hike these passages with john
thank you for arranging the shuttles

Been thinking about this segment for quite a few years. Logistical nightmare. Came up with the idea of getting a shuttle ride at both ends. JJ and Janie volunteered to drive us to Rogers Trough and pick us up at Roosevelt Lake. Thanks to both of you!
JJ hiked with us for a few miles from Rogers Trough TH then had to return home to take care of some business.
This is a long tough segment, but rewarding in the end. We pushed hard the first day and made it to Cottonwood Spring just as it was getting dark. We found a pretty decent campsite, then set up camp and ate in the dark. Beautiful breezy evening.
Took our time breaking camp in the morning as we had plenty of time to only hike about 8 miles. The Cottonwood Creek area is really pretty with water access in numerous places. The cottonwoods and sycamores have new bright green leaves.
The final stretch has more AEG than anticipated and temps were rising. We pushed through and finished off the hike by working our way down to the lake for a refreshing dip.
Great trip. Thanks Kelly! :)

Debated on where to hike yesterday, so ended up driving to the far eastern Superstitions (surprising I know lol) to hike a trail I have not done yet. Headed out towards Roosevelt and up 83 to the upper terminus of the Cottonwood Trail. With the Woodbury fire in 2019 and the lack of rain lately, I didn't have high expectations for this hike, however it was definitely better then I expected. I hiked this high to low, however, I think next time it would be better to get the uphill out of the way first when I'm not so tired. Initial half mile is open burnt fields of brush that used to be here. After that you enter the beginning of the canyon following the creek (which was completely dry here). I took a few minutes to look for Cottonwood Spring which I did not find and continued on. A little more then a mile in, the scenery completely changes to huge canopies of cottonwood trees (I guess that's where it gets it's name) and other riparian brush including a short stint of either blackberry or raspberry bush. The creek now had a nice flow with some pretty decent looking pools for a good portion of the way. An awesome area that was untouched by the fire! The canyon opens back up and takes you to a corral with a water tank and trough that were both full of water (and bees). Had lunch there (did not hike the road down to the Frazier TH) and started the hike back which was all uphill, although a slow grade up. Since this is part of the AZT it is clear of brush, full of cairns; in general really easy to follow. Came across a couple of back packers on the way out and that was it for the day. The list of trails in the Superstitions I have not done yet continues to get smaller and smaller. :y:

Another successful piecing together of AZT passages to create a less difficult day hike!

Drive: We dropped a vehicle at Mills Ridge Trailhead (narrow & steep drive with some big drops on either side but the road is very smooth & probably fine for a car) and drove to our starting TH on FR 83. Don't know if the FR 83 TH has a name but we parked at the water tank where FR 83 makes a T with another road. FR 83 goes through a sandy wash & has a few steep inclines & rough areas. Probably HC/4WD is best for that road. It was exactly 2 hours from Tempe to Mills Ridge TH and then approximately another 45 min from Mills Ridge to our start on FR 83.

Hike: Cottonwood Creek is absolutely beautiful! Flowing water through most of the creek we hiked. Mounds of vine (cat's claw maybe?), lots of vegetation, & birds singing all around. We loved this foresty area. The AZT #19 trail heading down to the Roosevelt Lake Bridge seemed to never end. It winds in & out & gives spectacular views. We walked across the bridge which was really cool but also funny to be hiking on a highway all of the sudden.

Took a short lunch at the pull-off at the AZT #20 TH & headed up AZT #20. And up. And up. And up. This part of AZT #20 is completely burned. It is unique & amazing to see the yuccas looking like grilled pineapples, the new growth everywhere, and the dark burned brown contrasted with the bright blue of the lake. The views along this trail are spectacular pretty much the whole time: Roosevelt Lake + Apache Lake + the Superstitions across the lake! Oh, does anyone know what the small metal tower with a screen looking thing is on Vineyard Mountain? We happened to run into friends we knew while checking that thing out which was fun! Should've asked them.

Glad we were able to break AZT Passages #19 & #20 up like this! Hopefully we will get to hike the first part of Passage #19 later in the month & them we will have completed the hottest central passages! :y:

First time on this trail. The TH is clearly marked off the HWY and was in very nice shape. Nice patches of fog all around and most of it was in the direction we were headed which added to the excitment.

The lower portion of the trail from the TH to FS341 sees a lot of cattle activity but otherwise is in great shape. The road walk section, well, goes UP quickly, but then levels off to a nice grade. The road is in very nice shape. Saw some cattle along this section of the hike. The best part of this hike is once you enter Cottonwood Canyon. The trail is very easy to follow and is in great shape considering it weaves in and out of the canyon itself. Nice water flow in several sections and very enjoyable. Topped out at FS83, found a nice spot to enjoy lunch, and then returned the same way. Saw some of the healthiest looking saguaro's I have seen in a long time along this hike.

Belated post. This was my first hike of the morning. I had randomly chosen Cemetery Trail and wanted something nearby with a little more teeth and this was it. i was a little worried about finding the TH; I needn't have been. The turn off is clearly labeled as the Frazier TH. I didn't see the FS 137 sign until I actually turn onto the road and once on the road it is only 20 yards or so before you are at the TH. Got to the trail around 6am. Still dark out, so I snoozed in my car for 30 minutes so I could start my hike with some predawn light. My garmin wasn't working so I didn't want to take any chances with wandering off trail in the darkness. When I started, the skies were clear except for a low lying cloud that was hanging in a nearby canyon. Didn't think too much about the cloud except for the beauty that it added to the scenery. Trail started off by contouring along the sides of the hills. Nice single track with negligible elevation change. Decent view of the lake (and SR 188). When the trail comes into view of Lakeview Trailerpark it drops down into Cottonwood Canyon. After passing through a gate, there was some brief, but very nice rock work before the trail connected to FS 341. The trail was marked at this juncture so it was easy to know which way to go...and it was up! I was very impressed with the condition of the road. It was very steep in some sections, but very smooth. I think it had been graded recently. This would have been a boring stretch of the trail if it hadn't been for that aforementioned cloud. That small little cloud had turned into clouds and before I knew I knew I had climbed into them. :) Very cool experience. After a couple of signicant climbs the trail/road drops down and reconnects to a single track at a watering trough. Again, the trail is well marked so it is easy to identify. The trail takes off in a generally southward direction staying within the confines of Cottonwood Canyon. The clouds/fog was with me for the first mile or so giving a very eerie and surreal experience to the trail. The trail was very easy to follow and I counted 35 stream crossings, 11 of which had flowing water. All of which were easy to negotiate. At times, for brief periods, the trail might stay within the stream bed, but the exit/entry points were always obvious and always occurred in the direction one was already traveling. (As I said, I was hiking without my garmin) but I would guess it was between 4 and 4.5 miles when I passed through a second gate. It was shortly after that, maybe .5 miles, when I came to the the trail work that matazal had mentioned back in December. The trail climbs out onto the south side of the stream bed and climbs 15 ft above the wash. The trail was clean and still relatively fresh : app : and though the growth between the trail and the streambed was fairly dense I did see one standing cairn in the streambed, so I imagine much of the older trail had kept to the streambed. This newer, improved trail was relatively brief, maybe a little more then .5 miles, before rejoining the older track. But by this time I was exiting the canyon and approaching the end of Cottonwood Trail. As kingsnake said, the end was rather anticlimactic. Just a very exposed FS road (upon which the AZ Trail continues on). There had obviously been a fire at some time in the past and the area was still in the process of recovery. Returned the way I had come. Kind of neat seeing the area unshrouded by clouds. Amazed at the number of saguaros that peppered the hillsides. A forest of saguaros! I had the trail to myself. Didn't see anyone or any wildlife while I was out.

After this hike I drove over to Cemetery Trail, which was located at the Lakeview Trailerpark. In the trail description for this hike the author mentioned Lakeview Trailerpark as a possible TH for this hike and I was curious to see how that might tie in. I didn't see any obvious tie-ins to the single track of the Cottonwood so I can only presume that the Lakeview tie-in would consist of taking Thompson trail to FS 431 and then follow 431 to where the Cottonwood trail joins it. I hope to get back and do the Thompson trail at some time and verify that.

A group of us went to the eastern Superstitions to do a bit of AZT work: Where the AZT leaves FR83 we split into two groups. Group 1 went a couple of miles down Cottonwood creek to clear debris/downfall and cleared brush on a bench to keep the trail out of the creek for another few hundred feet. Group 2 continued along FR83 to Two Bar TH and replaced a couple of burned signs.

After that we went over to Campaign TH to replace the broken Wilderness sign. We were following dozer tracks all the way in on a flowing Campaign Creek. About halfway in we met the dozer coming back out and chatted with him a bit. He informed us that we could get to the TH / Reavis School. It was a bit tricky in a few spots but we made it to the TH. So off we go to find the broken sign and check the post etc. Well... we find a very nice sign all fixed up  A big thank you to whoever did the nice work!

Just after entering Cottonwood Canyon, there is a trough, that when I passed by was full. There was a rubber hose from upslope, past the trough, down into Cottonwood Creek (which was dry at that point). If the hose is feeding the trough, the connection is buried. The water didn’t look bad, but would need to be filtered to be drinkable.

I did not bother locating the Thompson Spring, but the spring box was as full of decent water as the trough a half mile back. Cottonwood Creek had slight pooling at the FR 341 crossing, which had lots of shade.

From Thompson Spring, Cottonwood Trail #120 climbs rocky FR 341 for a steep 500 ft. in only a half mile to a cattle guard. From there, the gain is mostly a steady 300 ft. per mile.

At the three mile mark, FR 341 turns west, while Cottonwood Trail #120 and the Arizona Trail continue south, as actual foot trail, at the bottom of Cottonwood Canyon. The junction is marked by a dry trough, a large metal tank full of decent water, and a small corral. And foxtail. Lots and lots of foxtail. There was an incredible amount of foxtail all along the trail, but it was worst at the tank.

From the metal tank, Cottonwood Trail #120 basically winds back and forth across the bottom of Cottonwood Canyon, which at some points had slight pooling, with trickle, and others was bone dry. (On the surface: Cottonwood Creek must have subsurface flow.) The vegetation varies from desert flora to well-shaded canopy with leafy green groundcover. It reminded me a lot of Arnett Creek & Telegraph Canyon, near Superior. At one point, the creek was just a bit too wide for me to jump across, so I built a ‘bridge’ with a dozen rocks. 🌉

At the 4.5 mile mark, just past the second slant-bolted metal tube gate, is a ~30 acre burn area, about a ½ mile long, on the lower west slope of Cottonwood Canyon. The trail passes right through it, but I still managed to wander off trail, smearing my pack with soot. The burn area had the greatest quantity & density of flowers on Cottonwood Trail #120, which was already riddled with species.

Cottonwood Spring is supposedly 5.25 miles up canyon from Frazier Trailhead. I could not find it, nor any evidence — water trickling across the Cottonwood Trail #120 or moisture in the canyon bottom. Just past the spring’s ostensible location, the the Arizona Trail Association is rerouting the trail off the rocks at the bottom of the canyon, up slope 20 ft. or so. Fresh tred has been scraped, flourescent flags planted, and shrubbery trimmed. A couple of hundred yards past the trail work, there is a 5 ft. cairn apropos of nothing. 🤔

At the 6.1 mile mark is the sixth trough I spotted, the fourth bone dry one. 300 yds. past that, not far from Pinyon Mountain, is the end of Cottonwood Trail #120 at FR 83. There is nothing at the end of the trail: No sitting rocks, no shade. Enh. Kind of anticlimactic considering how enjoyable the hike was to that point.

So, I backtracked to the nearest dry trough, sat back against it, and took a break while the sun beat down my shoulders. At least the temperature was a very moderate 77℉. After my break, I booked it back to the Frazier Trailhead, where I downed my sodium & potassium restoring V-8, before my wife & drove back to Tonto Basin for cold beers & delicious pizza at Big Daddy’s. 🍕🤗

NOBO from the railroad tracks just north of US 60 to exit at Roosevelt Lake. Many thanks to sandyfortner for the shuttle.

Primo Spring conditions after the wet winter. Greenery, wildflowers, and from Whitford Canyon to Pine Creek I was never more than a few miles from clear running creeks. Cottonwood had light flow along much of its middle section too.

As a follow up to the realignment checks last week, two of us went back to show two Tonto FS folks and a trail planner/builder the 4 or 5 potential realignments. One realignment was extended further and we added another longer one as a second phase to the project. This last one will take the trail off 2-track for about a mile.

Three of us went to check on some potential realignments along a 1.3 mile section at the southern end of Cottonwood trail #120 (the section of trail from FR 83 to Cottonwood Spring). The goal is to get several sections out of the creek bed onto the side of the creek (less rocks/boulders underfoot) and perhaps reduce the number of creek crossings.

FR 83 is quite the adventure when you start the big climb up to the AZT! And the descent is equally “exciting"

We figured out 4 or 5 potential realignments to be investigated further with Tonto FS.

Started from the Reavis North TH with Dallin and Alex just before sunset. We hiked in to Reavis Ranch entirely by moonlight, no headlamps, which was a treat. Set up camp and enjoyed a chilly night at the Ranch. Jumped on the AZT in the morning. Reavis Gap is a nice trail. Love seeing pines in the Supes. Pine Creek was flowing well. We stopped here for a snack. Shortly after jumping on Two Bar Ridge, we ran into @ALMAL heading down for a solo night under the stars. Two Bar Ridge Trail offers great views and a couple of nice climbs. It warmed up during this sun exposed stretch. It was nice to be heading down into some shade upon reaching Cottonwood Trail. Started off kind of blah. An extensive network of cairns guides you through a dry creek bed and cattle country. Eventually things got green and shaded. I always enjoy Saguaros next to cottonwoods. Much more scenic than I anticipated. Wildflowers really came to life along here, as well. The road walk was even nice. Entire hillsides lit up with poppies. We cruised on down to Vineyard TH where my weekend ended and the fellas will continue on from. Great trip.
