Duane and I arrived at Brown's Ranch TH about 10:30 am and it was already warm enough to shed the long sleeve layer. Short-sleeve December hiking is our reward for enduring the summers, I suppose.

I chose this loop for its similarity in difficulty to last week's MSP hike while I reestablish my trail legs after time away. MSP trail stewards were posted at the ramada being their usual helpful selves.

Our intent was to follow Upper Ranch to the northern terminus with Cone Mountain but I kept right instead of left at the four-way junction with Wrangler and we soon found ourselves grabbing elevation along the southern flank of Brown's Mountain.

[in Bugs Bunny's voice]: I musta taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

We retraced our steps back to the junction. Thus, our intended three-miler became a five-miler. I get lost in my steps quite easily so these sorts of backtracks are nothing unusual for me.

The trip around the western side of Cone Mountain looks completely different from the east side. It's another one of those wonderlands of granite which really help to give the landscape a fun contrast in textures. Didn't get to see any wildlife this time around but I have no doubt it was seeing us.

I hadn't expected to tackle that kind of mileage so soon. Other than feeling a bit more sun-kissed than I had figured on being, I handled it pretty well. No post-hike energy crash but still am wishing my lower back wasn't so unhappy all the time at the end. In spite of it, I'm looking forward to spending much more time exploring MSP this winter.

Met my buddy Dan and his buddy Dan for some west side Browns Ranch trail riding out of Pima Dynamite trail head. Perfect temps this morning. Lots of hikers and bikers. Woman with a beautiful poodle. Lots of puddles on the trails.

Kelly wanted to get away from Papago, so after a short stint at work we were off to the Brown's Ranch area. Temps were chilly and windy with a bit of rain and hail/graupel. When the sun came out it felt rather nice. Saw six other hikers and a couple mountain bikers.
Good to get back out this way. Thanks Kelly. :)

john drove us to brown's ranch to do a real hike this afternoon
got going around 1230
headed toward brown's mountain with a detour around cone mountain
john went up to brown's summit while i went around to the north
we met back up then went over to the amphitheater and headed back to the trailhead
cloudy cool and windy to start
we got a few sprinkles and some graupel
nice once the sun came out
trails were damp and a little muddy in a few spots
very few people out
nice to be out somewhere other than papago park
linkage as a bonus
thanks, lp :)

Beautiful hike with a surprising amount of green & wildflowers for mid-May! We even got to see a Gila Monster stomping away from the trail! Lots of birds and lizards too. The trail up to the summit is loose & gravely. Great views.

Amazingly quiet for a Saturday in super bloom wildflower season. If you get to summit via Upper Ranch and Wrangler - that’s the quiet way. No poppies. Lots of brittle bush. Smattering of lupine and globemallow and fairy sister. Rare pink blooms on hedgehog cactus. Jogged a little on the way back to car. Wore a new hat that is a little bit old lady but keeps sun off and frankly I am a little bit of an old lady 😂. Turned 50 last week. Happy to have neck, back, knees in good shape and after changing my eating habits I’m back to my high school weight - so can’t complain. Grateful for a spring morning of solitude. Back to Mom shuttle duties soon.

This morning I randomly chose a trail from the McDowell Sonoran Preserve that I hadn't done yet and then cobbled together a loop incorporating it. The winner....Wrangler Trail. Nice little single track trail that stretches in front of Brown Mountain. A slight rise in elevation as it crosses one of several slopes that come off the mountain...very minimal though. Ideal for biking or jogging. I did a loop going counterclockwise Brown Ranch Road Trail - Wrangler - Cone Mountain - Hackamore - Latigo. Just eked 5 miles which was the bare minimum that I wanted to do. Got caught behind three horsemen which was a little frustrating, but luckily a split in the trail came up shortly and they chose a different route. (The last time I tried to run around a group of horsemen I took out a barrel cactus and "carried" parts of it back to my car embedded in my leg. Needless to say I chilled this time until our paths separated). :D The Brown's Ranch TH was fairly full when I got there at 6am, but I didn't see that many people on the trails. In addition to the horsemen about 12 other biker and hikers. Wildlife included chipmunks and rabbits. Love these trail!! Wish I lived closer. It took me as long to drive out there as it did to do the run.

Decided to check out a part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve I hadn't gone to yet. I kept taking less busy trails to avoid the people until finally I caught the summit trail. Decent little climb and I had he summit to myself. Ate some fruit, took a video and started back down.

This was a MSC Steward only fundraising hike for the Conservancy. Caroline and I hiked together and raised $700 from 25 donors! Advertising for the event encouraged hiking crazy hat or costume - - so of course Caroline and I both got our capes on and Wonder Woman gear. However we were the only ones in the hike or bike category that dressed up. Our capes had shredded edges by the end of the hike with all the cactus and wind combo.

Stopped for a break at Cathedral Rock and also went up to the Amphitheatre. Paul Staker led the hike - he is chair of MSC leadership team - was great to chat about goings on with him as I have missed a few CLT meetings with house move. Those CLT meetings are where you learn all the good stuff - real deal advance info from City personnel and MSC board, etc.

Proud of Caroline for raising so much money - helping me make the letter to ask for donations - talking to her friends' parents - and writing thank you notes to all our donors. Good life lessons there about volunteering and protecting land from development.
