different version of a hike with denny and linda last month
the main purpose was to get a track for black rock canyon from the city designated starting point
got going around 0800? on desert classic
the official start of black rock canyon is across a drainage from my usual turn
it adds about a half mile to the hike, and i would never go this way
anyway, up the trail formerly known as young man, then a left on the trail formerly known as guadalupe ridge
marcos de niza has evidently been extended to this point
black rock canyon follows the ridge for about a tenth of a mile, then drops into the east end of hidden valley
the descent is actually a very nice route and the trail is appropriately named, following an old use trail and weaving through giant boulders for about two tenths of a mile
went west through hidden valley, east on national, back up to guadalupe ridge at the stone house and then down san gabriel
lots of new names for old trails
i did get the track and should have a page/description of the newish route
enjoyed the hike too :)
no signage beyond the black rock turnoff from guadalupe ridge
the city still doesn't recognize old man trail

Young Man trail is one of the few I haven’t done in Somo, so we hit that one up on the way to Hidden Valley.

They changed the name to Black Rock Canyon trail and it now officially connects to Hidden Valley from the Ridgeline. (Last time I came down the HV from that point [several years ago], it was a choose-your-own adventure route.)

Instead of just backtracking on the return, we stayed on the Ridgeline and dropped down on midlife crisis.

Weather was nice. Thought it would be hotter.

Met up with Denny and Kelly at San Gabriel at 0630. Made our way over to Desert Classic and towards Young Man/Black Rock Canyon. We started Black Rock Canyon on the east side of the wash, which makes more sense than the official start on the west side. Headed uphill, grateful for the shade and breeze. The official trail tops out on the ridge, then drops into Hidden Valley not far from the tunnel—well signed the entire way. After that, we headed down National, then finished the loop on Beverly/Pima Canyon Loop. Good temps and breeze this morning. Nice workout loop, with moatly good footing going this direction. Always fun to hike with Denny and Kelly!

I joined Linda and surprise guest Kelly for a morning hike at South Mountain. Linda showed us the “new” Black Rock Canyon hike. Still a good climb. Followed it down into Hidden Valley where it ends. Made a loop out of it with National, Beverly, Desert Classic, and Guadalupe Perimeter.
Great temps, trail, and company! Thanks Ladies! Like HAZ, you rock!

Just looking to stretch my legs on a short evening jaunt. Had no idea it was a full super beaver moon, nor had I really looked at the high clouds ahead of time and seen that sunset coming.

A coyote sauntered along the tukee lowlands as I approached the climb. Later, up on the ridge, a pair of them crossed the trail and paused to watch me curiously from about 20 yards. It was too dark for a clear photo. Finally, I came to an abrupt stop as I spotted a pretty wdb in the middle of the trail set up waiting for dinner to pass within reach. It never flinched, but was probably happy that I opted to step around it.

Sometime, I'm gonna have to hit up the Secret Trail and Chihuahua Ridge sometime. Google bot's been crawling random blogs again! lol

Otherwise an uneventful walk in the park.

Took advantage of cloud cover to enjoy a morning jaunt in the desert. Saw a benchmark on the map and went over to look for it. I was a little surprised to find it intact. Headed down Hidden Valley all the way for the first time in a hot minute. Always a pleasure in there.

TboneKathy mentioned she was going to SoMo for an early hike, and I was happy to have an excuse to get out again and tagged along. She'd never been on any of the trails south of Guadalupe Ridge, so we went down San Gabriel, hiked a little on Desert Classic, then up Young Man--all new ones for her. We dropped down into Hidden Valley from the ridge and looped back from there. Pleasant morning, just a little warm at the end. Saw a horseback rider on the return to the trailhead, and the Pima parking lot was getting some new lines painted as we finished up.

An absolutely beautiful cloudy night in the preserve. No headlamp needed as the city lights did all the work.

Met Denny at San Gabriel for an early workout hike. West on Desert Classic to Young Man. Headed uphill, catching a nice sunrise along the way. Dropped into Hidden Valley near the tunnel. East on National, then up to San Gabriel Ridge to finish the loop. Nice temps and breeze, some clouds. Didn’t see anybody else until we were finishing National. As always, good to hike and chat with Denny!

I met Linda at San Gabriel for an early start. I hadn’t done this one for awhile and I ain’t getting any younger…🙄😁. Trails were in pretty good shape. We only saw a handful of hikers, couple of dogs, couple of joggers and one ranger. Nice workout with great weather and company. Thanks for the hike, Linda!
Like HAZ, you rock!!
My aeg was higher so I split the difference. 🤷‍♂️

Short loop after work. Cool and cloudy. Actually wore long sleeves! Sunset fizzled but moonrise was exceptional. If only this weather lasted all year.

Another perfect afternoon I couldn't pass up. Hadn't been on a couple of these in a hot minute.

The crosses in Hidden Valley are gone, but a new on has been placed, while what might be one of the old ones is laying down under an overhang. Odd stuff.

San Gabriel Ridge is now called Guadalupe Perimeter. Huh.

Came thru Equestrian to get to Warpaint. Turning a corner, blinded by the sun, I hit a javelina. Whoops. I think it was fine, it limped off towards the park. At first I thought my bumper hit it, but now I think it was my tire.

Breezy. Made a loop of ⬆️ Old Man - ➡️ Midlife Crisis - ⬇️ Young Man, using Desert Classic, Guadalupe Perimeter, and some other mumbo jumbo to tie it together. I don’t hike east on Guadalupe Ridge very often, so I had to pay a little more attention to the route in a few places thru the boulders.

Didn’t see many hikers until I was back on Desert Classic. Two young women were near the water tank off Kachina and were looking for Fat Mans Pass. I gave them the bad news, and quickly determined they didn’t know any directions, east vs west meant nothing to them. I suggested they just walk Desert Classic for a bit, then turn around. No need to get ambitious. They then asked where I got my nails done. Um, I haven’t gotten a manicure in at least ten years, so no good answer for you there, sorry.

Very windy for the final mile. Nice loop, except for the Desert Classic part. Packed out one mylar balloon.
