Took advantage of cloud cover to enjoy a morning jaunt in the desert. Saw a benchmark on the map and went over to look for it. I was a little surprised to find it intact. Headed down Hidden Valley all the way for the first time in a hot minute. Always a pleasure in there.

TboneKathy mentioned she was going to SoMo for an early hike, and I was happy to have an excuse to get out again and tagged along. She'd never been on any of the trails south of Guadalupe Ridge, so we went down San Gabriel, hiked a little on Desert Classic, then up Young Man--all new ones for her. We dropped down into Hidden Valley from the ridge and looped back from there. Pleasant morning, just a little warm at the end. Saw a horseback rider on the return to the trailhead, and the Pima parking lot was getting some new lines painted as we finished up.

An absolutely beautiful cloudy night in the preserve. No headlamp needed as the city lights did all the work.

Met Denny at San Gabriel for an early workout hike. West on Desert Classic to Young Man. Headed uphill, catching a nice sunrise along the way. Dropped into Hidden Valley near the tunnel. East on National, then up to San Gabriel Ridge to finish the loop. Nice temps and breeze, some clouds. Didn’t see anybody else until we were finishing National. As always, good to hike and chat with Denny!

I met Linda at San Gabriel for an early start. I hadn’t done this one for awhile and I ain’t getting any younger…🙄😁. Trails were in pretty good shape. We only saw a handful of hikers, couple of dogs, couple of joggers and one ranger. Nice workout with great weather and company. Thanks for the hike, Linda!
Like HAZ, you rock!!
My aeg was higher so I split the difference. 🤷‍♂️

Short loop after work. Cool and cloudy. Actually wore long sleeves! Sunset fizzled but moonrise was exceptional. If only this weather lasted all year.

Another perfect afternoon I couldn't pass up. Hadn't been on a couple of these in a hot minute.

The crosses in Hidden Valley are gone, but a new on has been placed, while what might be one of the old ones is laying down under an overhang. Odd stuff.

San Gabriel Ridge is now called Guadalupe Perimeter. Huh.

Came thru Equestrian to get to Warpaint. Turning a corner, blinded by the sun, I hit a javelina. Whoops. I think it was fine, it limped off towards the park. At first I thought my bumper hit it, but now I think it was my tire.

Breezy. Made a loop of ⬆️ Old Man - ➡️ Midlife Crisis - ⬇️ Young Man, using Desert Classic, Guadalupe Perimeter, and some other mumbo jumbo to tie it together. I don’t hike east on Guadalupe Ridge very often, so I had to pay a little more attention to the route in a few places thru the boulders.

Didn’t see many hikers until I was back on Desert Classic. Two young women were near the water tank off Kachina and were looking for Fat Mans Pass. I gave them the bad news, and quickly determined they didn’t know any directions, east vs west meant nothing to them. I suggested they just walk Desert Classic for a bit, then turn around. No need to get ambitious. They then asked where I got my nails done. Um, I haven’t gotten a manicure in at least ten years, so no good answer for you there, sorry.

Very windy for the final mile. Nice loop, except for the Desert Classic part. Packed out one mylar balloon.

I ended up back at South Mountain this week and put in a little effort to come up with a different route with a new combination of familiar trails. I got to Pima Canyon ~4:30AM and found the gate locked. I thought I remembered seeing the gate open pre-5AM in the past, but I parked on 48th Street and walked up the road, then on to Marcos de Niza and up Guadalupe Ridge. It was a nice sunrise, and there were a few people on the trails before 5AM.

I dropped down Young Man Trail and followed Desert Classic through some areas I hadn't hiked before, then added a short spur over to Corona de Loma TH. Lots of bikers and hikers in that area, as expected. Then the steep climb up Corona de Loma to Buena Vista Lookout. Not long after getting on National Trail, I passed a rattlesnake halfway on the trail, then hiked back through Hidden Valley and finished around 8:30AM. Very humid day...definitely the sweatiest hike of 2024 so far.

I ended up back at South Mountain again this week and ditched work a little early to start in the early afternoon. This being the third week in a row at SoMo, I decided to try something different and hiked the "Crumpled Bikini Top" route that pseaudalpine/Mel and clayncallaway have posted in the past, which gets its name from the shape of the route [ photo ] . There were lots of people out on a Friday afternoon, but that wasn't surprising with perfect weather--clear and mid-70s, though hazy.

As advertised, there are a lot of steep ups and downs on the route, especially on the parts forming the cups of the bikini. After going up Marcos de Niza, the route drops down San Gabriel Ridge, followed by a steep climb up Young Man Trail, then west along Guadalupe Ridge to a steep descent down Old Man Trail, followed by another steep ascent up Corona de Loma. By that point in the route, I'm guessing most people wish the bikini was a cup size or two smaller :).

I turned around near the broadcast towers on National and then started back toward Guadalupe Ridge. I saw a coyote just east of Buena Vista Lookout and finally stopped ~12.5 miles in for a quick snack and some much-needed water, then followed the ridgeline and Marcos de Niza back to the trailhead, which was still crowded with sunset approaching. I'd seen plenty of hikers and bikers throughout the afternoon, including a group of ~30 people with ASU nametags hiking up Old Man Trail.

Overall, it was a solid route and a good workout, though Route Scout listed the AEG at ~3,700', quite a bit lower than the other triplogs...not sure which is more accurate, but, regardless, it's a lot of elevation for a South Mountain hike.

While hiking last year I realized that I had some how missed this trail in my South Mountain adventures. Today I set out to rectify that. Got to the Javelina TH around 9am. I went in on what is now considered to the Pima Canyon Loop (formerly Beverly Canyon) and took that over to where it connects to the Desert Classic. After some ins and outs on the Classic I finally got to the start of the Young Man Trail. The Young Man is a steady climb with only a few flat sections to catch your breath. Very engaging. The trail alternates between dirt, rocks and solid boulders forcing you to keep your eye on the trail and choose your footing. Initially you get a very intimate feeling, being surrounded by rising hills on three sides. As you get higher the views to the south start to open up. Today was a clear, but cloudy day with great views. I enjoyed watching a storm cell move across the eastern part of the valley. Once on the Guadalupe, I opted to take the ridge all the way down to the Pima Canyon. Took the Pima back to the TH.

Weather was great. Cloudy for the most part, with an occasional breeze. No wildlife. But the coyotes were howling!! On three occasions I heard two different groups talking. On one occasion they went on for almost two minutes. Loved it! Encountered 14 hikers and 1 biker.

South Mountain Monday hike with Christina. Parked on 40th Place just south of Western Star Blvd. Jumped on Desert Classic to Beverly Canyon up to Midlife Crisis. Followed that to Young Man down do Desert Classic and the trail head. Happy to find ample parking at the trail head this morning. Just a few others on Midlife Crisis. Great hike. Wasn't as cold as I was expecting this morning. First time on Young Man.
