Forecast was for another cool-ish weekend day, so I took advantage of it. Did the same 20 mile loop trail as last weekend, but this time did it counter-clockwise which should have been easier. The route started at Bursera trailhead heading toward Lost Ranch. Took the Gila Trail eastward this time to where it meets National Trail. Took National east down the hill, then Kiwanis Trail. Then Las Lomitas to Max Delta.

After a short rest and a snack at the Bike Hub at the "Y". Then up and over the Alta Trail. On Alta I started noticing that my brand new boots that I was breaking in didn't fit as well as I thought they would in the store. Not great. Still another 15 miles to go. Hopefully it won't be too bad (my feet were in pain for the last 5 or 6 miles :( - not fun). Ate my lunch at the San Juan lookout, then headed north to Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter trail. There was a nice breeze that kept it cool and comfortable. As the trail got closer to the 202 freeway that breeze turned into a stiff headwind that tried to take my hat. All day there were times with no wind when it was hot, and strong wind when it felt cold. On average it was pretty comfortable.

From the Perimeter Trail to National Trail to Gila Trail and then back. This time I hiked the entire length of the Gila Trail starting from the middle to the east end, and from the west end back to the middle. There are shorter ways to hike Gila end to end, but none of then are real short since neither end of the trail is at a trailhead.

I wanted to get in some distance this weekend. I was going to drive north for cooler weather, but Saturday morning was cool in Phoenix so I decided to save a couple hours driving each way and hike South Mountain. I started at the Bursera trailhead as usual toward Lost Ranch. Decided to take Gila and check out the new Western end of the Gila trail that I haven't been on yet.

First thing I have to say is that it felt great walking on well maintained trails. Last weekend's hike in Prescott was slow and steep and tiring. This was the exact opposite. The trail was well marked. When I reached the junction of Gila and Bursera there was a post pointing to the new section of Gila trail. It gently climbed up the hill heading west. Then at the ridge line it went down the other side with long, easy switchbacks. Well done South Mountain! They could have saved a lot of distance by taking the shortest route straight down the slope, but instead made a long, easy switchback which kept the slope gentle.

Gila trail ends at National where National crosses the the big wash at the bottom of the hill. My plan was to flow National to San Juan lookout and take Alta Trail. Along the way I saw a sign for Ma Hua Tauk Perimeter Trail. I know that goes near San Juan and I had never hikes it so I turned of National and followed it. It started heading west toward the casino and goes past a number of houses just east of the 202 that are hidden from view on the freeway by the sound wall. The trail runs above and parallel to the 202 for a while and the traffic noise is VERY LOUD! I couldn't even hear Route Scout announcements. Once the trail turns east the freeway noise faded.

Got to San Juan and rested for a few minutes at the lookout. Then headed up Alta Trail to the Y. Then Max Delta to Las Lomitas. To another break near the Kiwanis trailhead. Then up Kiwanis to National to Gila. I took the old Pyramid Trail back to the start. In retrospect I should have stayed on Gila where it branches off so that I could have done the full length of Gila. But phone battery was dying and I didn't want to lose the end of the route recording.

South mountain has been doing a great job maintaining the trails and making them easy to walk on.

In all my life I had not previously found the desire to walk the MHT perimeter trail. I was pleasantly surprised to start, but interest did wane a bit at the west end, which seems to be true for a few other trails in this preserve.

A trail that is not true for is Alta, which stays spicy all the way to the end, and is actually a quite enjoyable track the whole length. I didn't drop down to its eastern terminus today though, staying on the ridgeline all the way to a juicy steak back to the start.

It was a pleasant temperature and the visibility was outstanding. I passed 8 other hikers in total, which is definitely a change from my normal experiences on the south South range.

I sort of underestimated this loop and hiked until dusk... But still didn't miss dinner. :) The Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter was more hilly and challenging than I'd remembered. It's very similar to Bajada (better isolated trail) and the Desert Classic (not as good as either). For me, Alta including Maricopa Peak is the second best route in SoMo after MLC because of the lack of mountain biker hoards. National near San Juan Lookout had some trail reworked, essentially redirected out of the ditches, which was needed. The Alta and Ma Ha Tauk trails have been rerouted or relabeled some, respectively. The new parking area is open, I think labeled as San Juan Bike Hub. Surprisingly nice temperature and breezes for late March, but the wildflowers in this area aren't as prolific as last spring.

I was sorta in the area and thought I'd try something new. I almost changed my mind in the parking lot when I parked next to the remnants of someones shattered window.

I was following a Track that @LindaAnn had done. I went CW to get the climb out of the way early and only passed a handful of hikers on the way up. The climb up was steep enough to keep my heels off the ground for quite a bit towards the top.

The ridgeline was quite enjoyable. Good views, refreshing breezes, birds chirping and a smattering of poppies.

I saw my first hiker since the climb at the San Juan Lookout TH. The Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter Trail did drag on in places, but not too bad. The clouds thickened making the remainder of the hike comfortable.

Morning hike at SoMo. Wanted to get a hike on the Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter. I’ve done it partially a couple of times, but have never hiked the western segment that parallels the 202. Started from the 19th Ave TH and took it towards San Juan Lookout. The trail is well signed and easy to follow except as you approach the SJ Lookout. The trail splits about .25 miles away from SJ Lookout without any signage. I went in to the SJ Lookout just to confirm that there was no signage. There wasn’t. Came back to the split and proceeded to follow the trail that wraps around the out lying mountain. As soon as it started to wrap around the mountain, there was a trail marker indicating the Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter trail. Seems pretty obvious they should have a marker at the split. I followed the trail around to where it merged with the Maricopa Trail. Nice to see that connection. Something for the future. Took the Ma Ha Tuak back to the National and then it was decision time. Not a huge fan of the Perimeter trail. Pretty boring with some unimaginative ups and downs. So I opted for the Alta. Much more entertaining. Bypassed the Maricopa Peak and followed a user trail over to the Hau’ Pal. Ok loop. Nice to see how the Ma Ha Tuak works with the rest of the trail system. Met 6 hikers in the first hour on the Ma Ha Tuak and then nothing after that. Wildlife: a couple of chipmunks and a Hawk. Great weather. Very windy. Felt great. One of the clearest days I’ve seen in awhile.

Starting from 41st Ave and Estrella (Curtis Saddle Trailhead), I hiked the western section of Ma Ha Tuak to the Maricopa Trail, back to San Juan Lookout, then back to the trailhead for a quick 4.5 mile loop.

At 83 degrees, I said goodbye to the last of the wildflowers as they were wilting away. What a difference a week makes.

Parked at 43rd/Estrella. First headed up the ridge on the west side of San Juan Lookout. Solid trail for about a half mile, until it ends at a small “peak”. This is where we turned around, but a faint route continues along the ridge.

Once back down to San Juan, we took National for a short distance, then looped around that same ridge on Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter Trail. Nothing exciting, easy walking. If you like freeways, crappy houses, and bees, this is the trail for you. The idiot dog likes to try to eat both horse and coyote poop, plus roll around in it, so she would probably rate this hike five stars.

A tad warm. Plenty of wildflowers. Did not see anyone else.

Finished off all of SoMo's official trails by adding on the uninspiring west section of the Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter to the classic Alta-Bajada Loop. Poppies are popping within blankets of Lesquerella arizonica.

Started from the 19th Ave North trailhead and headed west on Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter Trail. Cool and cloudy for most of that trail, but sunny and muggy by the time I reached the western end of it. From the end of that, I took National north for about a half mile to San Juan Lookout. Headed east up Alta, skipping Maricopa Peak. Headed over to the top of Hau’Pal/Warrior and went down that. Good loop and a nice workout. Very few people out. Saw one coyote and one snake, not sure what kind, but harmless.

Headed to west South Mountain this morning with Carey to check out the trail I've been eyeing up from the 202 since my first drive. Started on the Maricopa trail at Dusty Lane and the 202. Followed the trail east under the 202 and up a short 100' climb to the Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter trail. Took Ma Ha Tauk clockwise to National trail. Followed National over to Bursera. The climb up National to Bursera was intense, coming down Bursera even more so. Rode Bursera to Gila and then back to National. Backtracked on National to Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter and the truck. Saw lots of hikers and trail runners, no other bikers! Couldn't have asked for a better day on the trails!

Started up the Bursera trail just before first light. Took it to the National, then hiked west to the junction with the Maricopa trail which is near the west end of the National. I then hiked west on the Maricopa/Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter trail. I kept going west on the Maricopa trail where it splits from the Ma Ha Tauk. Went under the 202 freeway, north along 51st Ave., then west again. The trail parallels a canal which is where I turned around and headed back.
Some new trail for me. Not too exciting. Probably best done during cooler months. :)

I planned on doing and out and back on the perimeter trail. I wanted to start a half hour before sunrise. When I got there the whole cul-de-sac was tapped off with cops there and in parking lot. I turned around and went to central entrance and waited to get in. I parked at the triangle. I did Bajada/ San Juan road/ Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter/ Ma Ha Tuak. Ma Ha Tuak May be changed to crosscut??. The police/ detectives were still at 19th Ave lot at 8:00am. A little later start, a little more miles, a little more heat was no bueno!!!!

Started from a very full 19th Ave (north) trailhead. Went out the west side of the lot, towards the start of Warrior and Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter trails. The start of both is signed about 100’ west of the parking area. Warrior seems to be officially renamed Hau’Pal, as indicated by all of the signage along the trail. Steep climb up, but the new switchbacks are nice. The trail kind of abruptly stops near the top, and there is a laminated paper on a stake pointing T-Bone loop to the left (east), but we turned right and continued over Star Peak and on to Alta.

Headed west on Alta and made our way up to Maricopa Peak. Nice snack break atop the peak, then we headed back down and continued west on Alta. At San Juan Lookout, we debated about heading over to do the full Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter trail, but decided instead to skip the western part of and simply headed east from the parking area.

Easy walk east on the Perimeter trail. Some ups and downs, but generally a flat stroll. My daughter liked looking at all the unique houses we passed. Finished up just after 5:30 to a still full parking lot. Nice day, but could have used more of a breeze and a few more clouds for shade.

I wanted to inspect the lower north slope of the Ma Ha Tuak Range of SoMo, so I did a loop up Warrior, west on Alta skipping Maricopa Peak, down to the San Juan TH or Lookout, our whatever, and then back on the perimeter trail. It was nice. No bikes, and pretty few people. Couple of friendly dogs, and one shy Javalina.

Clockwise loop from 19th Ave trailhead with Gallydoll, SCA, Jan, Mel, and Sue. Parking lot was nearing full at 7am before sunrise, completely unexpected! Burned the chill off climbing up Warrior. Scenic views abound on Alta with a side trip up Maricopa Peak. Took the new Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter trail. A lot of up and down and in and out into the foothills. Interesting homes to look at along the way. Also stopped to check out the remains of an old home with quartz fireplace. Longer and more AEG than I had been anticipating. Fantastic day. The harem was pleased!

Evening hike with wife and daughter. With a near full moon we opted for a late evening hike at South Mountain. Decided to try the Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter Trail. Got on the trail around 7pm just as the moon was cresting the horizon. Always awesome to catch a moon just breaching the horizon, more so when it is a full moon and you are (somewhat) removed from the city. :D I had done "this trail" years ago as part of an Alta loop and I was surprised how much it had been modified. This trail actually gets higher into the foothills than the user trail did avoiding the homes the lie at the base of South Mountain. This trail is now an official part of the South Mountain Trail System. It is a clear cut path with trail markers scattered along the way. We had decided to hike in for half an hour and then turn around so I didn't get see that much of the trail, but what I saw was pretty neat. One odd thing, about .75 miles in we noticed an illuminated saguaro higher up on SM. At first I though it might be a hiker's flashlight, but the illumination was steady for the 20+ minutes that the saguaro was in view. I'll have to check that out some day. After the hike we visited T Bone Steakhouse, just north of the TH. This is where the now renamed T Bone Trail had gotten its name from. The food is pretty good, with nice ambience (been around since the 50's - I think) and it has great views.

When I did the Warrior Trail 2 months ago, I noticed the Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter Trail that looked like it had been continued from the San Juan TH, where I had hiked portions of it in the early summer. Ted and I had hiked to the end of this from from the west side, I wanted to go back to see if they finished it. they did. and in the meantime, a track and description setup has been posted on HAZ for this trail.

I started off hiking up the Warrior Trail again for 2 reasons. First, to beat the sun in my eyes when I headed eastbound. Second, I hadn't done the T-bone loop portion back down to the 19th Ave TH. I hiked up the Warrior Trail in the dark with my headlamp the whole time. The chilly weather was great for keeping cool as I heated up with the steep climb. Along the ridge at the top, it got chilly quickly as I wasn't burning as much energy anymore. On my way down, I missed the "official" trail and hiked down what looked to be a trail that they're trying to decommission.

Once back at the 19th Ave TH, I took the Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter Trail westbound to where I left off before. They definitely have done a lot of work here since last June. Some sections even have posts and cables as a guardrail, not really sure why.

Back at 19th Ave once again, I hiked over to the Max Delta Trail and back on the Las Lomitas and back to the 19th Ave again to finish the day.

My route allowed me to stay in the shade for the first 3+ hours and over 6 miles before I was in direct sunlight. The cooler weather was very nice, even though I was still sweating. The weather was very hazy most of the morning, typical of the bad air this time of year.

Surprised to get another 1000+ AEG after I finished the Warrior Trail. The Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter has quite a few climbs to it and isn't really level at all. Then the Max Delta had a bit of climb, too. Nice to get a decent workout in with the extra AEG.
