Merry Christmas all! : rein : Celebrating later in the day, so I got an early visit to SoMo. Got started around 7am from the Javelina TH. Surprised at the number of cars in the lot. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one with the idea of a morning hike. I enjoy this loop. It’s existed long before it was dubbed “Pima Canyon Loop.” Did the loop clockwise. Nice elevation change though I’m getting to old (or out of shape) to jog some of the inclines. Still a nice challenge. Nice breeze this morning. Probably, one of the clearest mornings I’ve seen in the last few months. I knew there was a reason I liked hiking in the valley. Encountered 10 hikers, 2 bikers and 2 runners.

I joined the Ladies of South Mountain for a jaunt around the park.

Starting at the Pima Canyon Trailhead, we completed a clockwise loop. The climb began right out of the gate on the Marcos De Niza trail. Linda and I only had to wait a few times for Kelly on the uphill sections. Guadalupe Ridge was another fun trail with great views and some minor boulder scrambles.

Hidden Valley Trail was equally enjoyable, featuring dry falls, a bridge, a tunnel, Fat Person’s Pass, and even an old mine.

We eventually gave up on Kelly and sent her packing down the road while Linda and I completed our longer loop.

The weather was perfect, and the company was okay.

Thanks, ladies!

Met Kelly & Bruce at Pima Canyon and got started around 0800. Headed up Marcos De Niza, then up Guadalupe Ridge. I think my Garmin watch told me a few times I was about to die on the uphill portions. Plus my left foot has been hurting for about a week, and I’ve done nothing beneficial to aid in that recovery. Might have to take a few days off. The mild scrambling on the ridge is one of my favorite parts of SoMo.

Dropped down to National and headed east. Came into Hidden Valley at Fat Man’s Pass and stayed in Hidden Valley and the lower wash. Made an extra trip through and across the bridge. Side trip to a mine, which has some granite I really like. Spotted a few glyphs, most of which I’d seen before, but a couple were new to me. The wash is also a fun area to explore.

Kelly made her departure when the wash reached National, and Bruce & I made our way over to some short stretches of Mormon Loop & Javelina to get to Ridgeline. Despite being at the busy end of the park, Ridgeline is a surprisingly good workout, roller coastering along with some steep sections of loose footing. After Ridgeline, we took the eastern half of Pima Canyon Loop along the eastern boundary of the park, and around Beacon Hill back to the trailhead. I whined through the short uphill section, but the extra mileage was good.

Nice to hike with Bruce and Kelly again. Fun loop with some nice stretches of solitude. Even the busier sections had few hikers today.

Nice loop in south mountain, though hotter than desired. Saw our friend the snake on Guadalupe ridge. Missed a turn for the Ridgeline trail in the trail web maze. But no worries, slightly different loop than desired, but as a result got to see a plethora of quail! 😁♥️

People and bikes everywhere, as expected. The Guadalupe ridge is the best with the least people and the most fun! 😁

Parking lot had a fair number of empty spaces at 6a. Lot was mostly full by the end of the hike despite the heat.

Stared about 6 this morning. Beautiful day for hiking. Lots of Gambel Quail, a few cotton tails, a handful of lizards, that was about all the wildlife observed.

I spent the last 1/2 hour swapping my sunglasses with eclipse glasses, checking on the eclipse, then swapping glasses again. Luckily that end was not a very strenuous trail, the Pima Canyon Loop. Then went home to finish out watching the eclipse.

Joined the Bagel Bunch (James, Joseph, Doug, Dietrich, Venjo) to ride some chunky climbs and descents at South Mountain. Started around Arizona Grand and jumped a connector over to Pima Canyon Loop. Then Pima Canyon Road, Mormon Loop, up National to the Waterfall, turnaround, National, Mormon Loop, Javelina, and worked our way back to the start. Probably saw a hundred bikers and a million hikers out on the trails.

Another South Mountain fitness hike. This was the day after our Chinese new Year's Party so we didn't do our usual strenuous hike in the morning. Victoria and I opted for something easy but different.

We started with Pima Canyon but were almost immediately enticed by the more interesting ridgeline trail and made something of a loop of it. That center section is a veritable spaghetti bowl of interconnected trails!

Going in the evening made for fewer crowds but there were still a fair number of people around. We might have to do a revisit of the ridgeline trail as an alternative to Marcos de Niza.

Linda and I hit the trail around 8:30am. Hiked up and over then on to Javelina trail. We had talked about going across the ridgeline trail to see what is actually marked ridgeline now. It seems the ridgeline is now from the Javelina saddle by Mormon across to were it connects to the Beverly trail (now Beverly/Pima connector) close to the 46th street parking lot. We took the Pima Canyon Loop (old Beverly) across to Desert Classic and where the old Beverly trail ended. It seems the old Ridgeline eastern end is now just a connector trail to get up top to the new claimed ridgeline Trail.
We did see one guy laying on the Ridgeline which didn't seem to be wearing typical hiking gear. Seemed to be sleeping and not have fallen or anything. Someone did call the paramedics so hopefully he was all good!
It seemed warm today and I was feeling blah on the last half mile but what's new. :o :D
It turned out to be a good workout hike. Thanks for joining me Linda and straightening the Ridgeline out for me. :y: Like HAZ, you rock!

Met Denny at San Gabriel at 0830. Headed up San Gabriel. No breeze, heavy stench of weed. Came down at the rock buildings, then headed over to Javelina and up Ridgeline. Followed the full length of what is now designated as Ridgeline over to just above the Beverly parking lot. Roller coaster, but I like the added distance. Saw one guy sleeping/passed out on the trail, probably all night. He was moving around a bit and others said they had already called for help, so we kept going.

Headed north on Beverly Canyon (now the western side of Pima Canyon Loop) where we could see four rescuers above us heading over to Sleeping Beauty. Unfortunately, they hiked in from Pima Canyon, which made their effort three times the distance & aeg it should have been—coming in from Beverly Canyon/46th St would have been significantly easier.

Very warm along Beverly Canyon and Desert Classic to finish out the loop. Still no breeze, but we survived. As always, great to get a hike in with Denny, and fun conversation!

late start but morning temps were nice. A fair amount of hikers, joggers, and mountain bikers out enjoying the nice mornings. The trail was in pretty good shape. Everything looked thirsty out there! Enjoyable outing.

Got an early 5:30am start. it was dark when I pulled into the parking lot, but by the time I was on the trail there was enough light to not need a headlamp. headed out on the Javelina Canyon Trail to the National Trail and continued westbound on the National until its junction with Corona de Loma. Hiked to the top of a small hill at that junction before I turned around.

took Hidden Valley on the way back. Some of that has some dicey spots I forgot about. I slipped on the smooth rock at one point and lost the trail briefly before getting back on track. Ended up in Pima Canyon and made my way over to the Beverly Canyon TH to finish up.

the weather was much cooler than it's been and it made a big difference. The climb up Javelina Canyon wasn't much effort. Hiked in the shade for the first 2.5 miles, which helped. The heat started to kick in the last 2 miles but fortunately the climbing was done by then. Lots of traffic, both bikers and hikers early on. Finished up around 10:30am, made pretty good time.

Early morning run at SoMo. Got started from the Javelina TH around 5:30am. Did this loop clockwise. The trail alternates between a solid single track to dual track depending on where you are in the loop. Easy to follow, though the signage seemed vague on the Desert Classic part of the loop. Nice breeze coming from the south with the rising of the sun. Trails didn’t see me all that busy, but I still counted over 30 users. Saw a surprising number of quail and a lone rabbit.

Similar loop as the one I did last month, but tacked on more of Beacon Hill near the end. Started at 0840 and headed up Marcos De Niza. Apparently, the New Years resolution crowd does not hike when temps are below 50, because it was surprisingly empty at the start.

At the power lines, continued west and up to Guadalupe Ridge, taking that all the way to the west end. Guadalupe is really the best part of this loop, the rest is just fluff to get some mileage. At the end of the ridge, dropped to National and west to Buena Vista.

Headed down Geronimo, then through the neighborhood and up Mormon. Mormon was fairly busy, but all were polite. East on Mormon Loop, then a quick bit on Javelina to get on Ridgeline. Took Ridgeline east to Beacon Hill, and took that all the way east. Looped back around the actual Beacon Hill on Pima Canyon Loop and took that west. Hopped on Pima-Beverly Connector for a minute to get over to the road and parking lot to finish out the loop.

Reasonable temps, but could have used some clouds or a breeze. Nice day for a higher mileage workout.

Enjoying these cool morning hikes , only plan was to finish up before the afternoon. Pima Canyon lot was not half full this am. Headed toward the Ridgeline Trail via Beacon Hill trail, lots of dog walkers in this area. Came down a short stretch of Javelina and then proceeded up Mormon Loop, bike riders were apparently sleeping in this am. Took a short jog down Devastator but decided to rejoin the loop on to Mormon Trail. Came down National meeting a handful of hikers , when I reached the wash took the use trail behind the stone house up to the ridgeline. Proceeded along the ridgeline knowing I wanted to avoid the road walk, figuring I would take Beverly Canyon down to Desert Classic. On the way I came across a sign post that was labeled Guadalupe Perimeter Trail, never had taken it so decided to try it, The last time I saw a sign post with this name was next to the helipad trail? Anyway it had some loose rocks on some steep sections but was benign compared to some of the other descents on this side of the mountain further west. This trail made a junction with Desert Classic next to a neighborhood what I presume is the San Gabriel trailhead. Was wondering if this trail was ever posted as San Gabriel Ridge instead of Guadalupe Perimeter. Third time on Desert Classic still not a charmer , appears to be a trail only those living within walking distance would love, due to it being a convenient dog walking trail. Sign posts added in the Pima Canyon Loop name once past Beverly Canyon. I guess they figure the double name makes up for some of the unnamed trails. :D . Finished up as the day was warming up.
