Joined the Bagel Bunch (Doug, Nick, John) for a ride in the White Tanks today. Started at the Library and took Mule Deer clockwise to South, Goat Camp, Bajada, back to Mule Deer. Then over to Ford Canyon counter clockwise to Waddell and Mesquite Canyon back to Mule Deer returning to the Library. Lots of folks out hiking on the trails this morning and some bikers. Saw a couple on a tandem mountain bike, that was pretty cool. Trails were really dusty, when is it ever going to rain again?

Early morning hike in the White Tanks. Decided to take it easy doing a loop involving the Bajada. Got there a little before 5am so had to wait in line with a few other vehicles for the gates to open. Parked at the South TH and did the loop CW…South Trail to Goat Camp (briefly) to Bajada to Mule Deer. At Mule Deer I turned and went back to Old Stable Trail. Along the way I followed what I thought were some use trails, but discovered as I was doing them that they were part of the old visitor center Interpretive Trail. (Researching my previous write-ups I saw that I had “discovered” this trail back in 2017 as well). I took the Old Stable Trail over to Mule Deer and took that back to the TH. Nice hike, with decent temperatures. Even though I was only walking my knees were “barking” for most of the hike. Trails were crowded: 1 hiker, 3 bikers and 44 runners…..came upon a group of 36 Shadow Mountain cross country runners.

After recently hiking in the San Tan Mountain Regional Park, I'd have to admit the White Tank Mountains are growing on me. The crappy traffic involved with accessing both areas is similar, but the White Tank Mountains (plural) has so much more to offer than the flat, uninspiring monotony of San Tan Mountain (singular). If you're a trail runner, mountain biker, or one of the Gilbert Moms, then STMRP is definitely for you. If you're a real hiker, the upper reaches of WTMRP are probably going to bring you more joy. We completed both summits in under 2h 15m, which was a slower than normal pace because of the pooch (but Dese was insistent on padding some stats and adding a few new peaks). We could have finished the complete lasso loop in under 5h total, but the day evolved nicely weatherwise, so we added on a few easy, quick out-and-backs of the [ South Trail - White Tank Mtns ] , [ Bajada Trail - White Tank Mtns ] and Old Stable Trails. I suppose [ White Tank Radio Smt via Verrado/Tower Rd ] is on the shortlist now. To all the nutrition waist channels who've left garbage in the summit register, don't fret, that trash has been hauled out. NGAF about your Singapore Tourist Pass discounts or that you wear Cinch Jeans.

White Tanks Tuesday! Started at South Trail, to Goat Camp, Bajada, Mule Deer, Mesquite Canyon, Waddell, Ford Canyon, Gray Fox, Comp Loop, Gray Fox, Ironwood, Ford Canyon, Mule Deer back to South trail to complete the loop. Lots of cars in the parking lots and hikers out on the trails. Saw a few bikers too. Cattle drive going on south of big hill on Mule Deer. I was dragging today, couldn't wait to finish the loop.

Researched to figure out what part of town I could hike in without getting drenched. White Tanks looked to be the answer + a strong chance of seeing the waterfall. Mmmm, no. I would suggest trying on Tuesday.

We then did the "long" loop. After we pondered where to go next. We decided on mule deer trail. That was easy. Let's add South trail. On the way back, why not tack on Bajada trail. All of which were rather easy. Not a drop of rain fell on us.

Been hiking but have not posted in a while - headed up Ford Canyon into the wash with water and wheat everywhere. Tough slog through the sandy wash but then nice climb up out. Continued on Ford Canyon until I reached the mesquite/goat camp intersection. Decided to continue on goat camp and take it all the way down to the bajada trail and then to mule deer. Finally making my way back to Ford Canyon and back to my truck. Perfect day for a nice long hike!

When I lived in the West Valley, I used to hit up the White Tanks more often. Glad to get back out there again.

A 7am start and a pleasantly cool, clear morning. We saw four doe near the TH that could care less that we were there.

Mule Deer Trail was a good warm up. Good trail and an easy grade while the sun was rising.

Bajada (buh·haa·duh) Trail was easy peazy and pleasant once Joe's stalker left us.

Goat Camp has never been my favorite. Maybe because it's been warmer in the past when I've done it. A nice climb with good views today. We saw 4 more deer here. There's only one section of ankle busters on the way up. I took Joe up a wash the took us to the road to Goldwater Peak. From here we hit up the ridgeline use trail back down to Goat Camp. Once again, no goats we seen today.

After lunch, a wrong turn and a run in twice with the twins, we headed down on Ford Canyon Trail. This my favorite in the White Tanks, Interesting geology, some easy scrambling and great views. This is also where we saw most of the people on the day.

Good times

Every time I head out to the White Tanks for a mountain bike ride I always end up riding the competitive loop. Today I decided to explore some of the other trails the White Tanks have to offer. I parked at the trailhead for South trail. I followed the following trails in a clockwise direction: South, Goat Camp, Bajada, Mule Deer, Mesquite, Waddell, For Canyon, Ironwood, and returned to my truck all the way back on Mule Deer. I encountered a fair number of hikers and bikers under the overcast skies this morning. Most were super happy to see me. I know I was super happy to see them, even the ones that didn't return the super happiness. South trail and Goat Camp were a little bumpy. The rest were smooth and well groomed. Signs at all the trail intersections. Nice relaxing ride. Almost thought I was going to get rained on.

Went out to the White Tanks to hike a few sections of trails I haven't done yet. Kept it to the flat trails with the heat being a factor these days. The weather was actually much better than last Saturday, much less humid. It was actually pretty cool early on with some light cloud cover, but later the heat started to kick in. Went through a lot of water, well over 150 oz.

I started from the end of Goat Camp Trail, then took the Bajada and Mule Deer Trails northbound to the Grey Fox Trail and headed back. Saw some bikers and trail runners early on, but by the time I was done at 11am, most everyone was already gone for the day. The burn area there from a few months ago already looks better. Still no vegetation obviously, but less black and charred.

Went back to White Tanks to do the hike I planned last week that got put on hold from the fire. I hiked the lower trails, with the main goal to finish all the Mule Deer Trail since it's part of the MT.

I started down at Parking Area 1 and hike the southernmost portion of the Mule Deer Trail, eventually heading north. I hiked the little spur over towards the Nature Center, since that's also a designated part of the MT. As I hiked over the high point of the Mule Deer Trail, that's where the wildfire was. Mostly just scorched earth, not as much brush as there was before. On the way up the hill, 4 or 5 mountain bikers flew down the hill past me without the slightest thought of yielding the trail. All other hikers and bikers I encountered the rest of the morning were decent human beings.

At the staging area, I headed north on the Ford Canyon Trail, then took a right turn and hiked all of the Ironwood Trail, then headed south on the Waddell Trail. After the Waddell, I took a right turn onto the Mesquite Canyon Trail back to staging area.

Hiked over the hill on the Mule Deer again, and took the Bajada over to Goat Camp. Along the Bajada is where I saw the saguaro with a hole in it that obviously has a bees nest. The air rushing out of the whole made it sound like there was an AC unit inside the cactus. Managed to zoom inside the hole for a decent pic without putting myself at too much risk.

From the Goat Camp Trail, I turned left on the South Trail and back to the car. The temperature wasn't too hot. Got a little warm the last hour or so, but not unbearable. The early morning light cloud cover helped with that. Nice to get some higher mileage on actual trails again, even if the AEG was still a little lacking.

After work run. Plan was to do an in and out on the Mule Deer trail. The clouds were threatening so I was keeping my options open as I went. Started from the South TH and took the Mule Deer trail north. There was light sprinkles to start with and I felt fine under those conditions. Stayed that way as I passed several loop options, but the closer I got to the Bajada juncture the more steady the rain became. It wasn't horrible and honestly I could have gone either under those rain conditions but opted for the loop. Of course as I made my way toward the Goat Camp trail the rain turned into a drizzle again. I was feeling a little cheated having opted for the shorter loop.. I guess Mother Nature picked up on my frustration and felt obligated to corroborate my decision. As I turned onto South Trail and headed towards the TH the drizzle turned into a steady rain. Accompanied by lightning and thunder, the rain increased as I got to the TH. I wish I could say that I beat the rain, but I was thoroughly soaked by the time I was done. The rain did turn into a downpour, so I guess you can say that I missed the worst of it :? . Saw a rabbit and quail, along with one other hiker. Weather was different and kind of a neat experience.

We thought the time would be good for wildflowers, but there wasn't alot going on yet. It does appear the brittle bush are going, so I expect the Ford canyon may be good now. We did find some patches of flowers here and there. Hike overall was good. Once you get over the initial push up Goat canyon its pretty level walking, with great scenic views, almost alpine like, without the pines :) .

Loop included the following hikes for a 13.7 mile loop
1. Goat Camp
2. Mesquite Canyon
3. Mule Deer
4. Bajada

We got a nice early start, so didn't really run into anyone until well into the Mesquite section of the hike.

As part of my recent hikes to trails I've done before, but haven't done in 15+ years and never logged in on HAZ, I've been wanting to made a return to the White Tanks. I-10 construction, hot weather, and general laziness have gotten in the way of that recently. With the recent turn to cooler weather and a holiday weekend with no freeway closures, I had no excuses left to not go. I decided on the southern loop of the Goat Camp and Mesquite Trails, but added Willow Canyon.

A slow start out the door got me a post 7am start on the trail. It was still pretty cold, so I started with the hoodie up and the gloves on. Those were both shed about a mile or so in once the climb started. I decided to start straight away up the Goat Camp Trail to get the hard part out of the way first. I had also noticed on the county map that a significant section of the Goat Camp Trail is marked as a rough section to hike with loose rocks. The older I get, it becomes harder to walk down that kind of trail than up it. Plus, coming down, at that point I would have been past the 11 mile mark and very tired.

The shade in the canyons on the way up Goat Camp kept me kind of cool and not sweating too much. Saw 5 hikers on the way up, 3 seemed to only go up part way and then headed back. Once I got over the saddle, the views opened up to the north, where the snowline from the night before was very well defined. It was also at that point that I noticed a herd of deer in the canyon below me. I spent some extra time zooming in on them getting some decent shots.

The level part of the Goat Camp Trail seemed to be the nicest part of the hike. the snow to the north make for great scenery, and the trail was level, making the hiking very easy and pleasant. I barely noticed the decent that the trail begins to make to the junction with the Mesquite and Ford Canyon Trails until I looked back at one point and noticed how much higher it was where I had just hiked from.

Willow Canyon and the lower Mesquite Trails had the most traffic, as expected. Mostly standing water was in pools in the washes, but in some spots you could hear the gurgling of a slow flow of water.

I decided to make it a loop, hiking the lower trails back to where I parked. it ended up being a little longer than I expected, but not unbearable. A mild slog a times, mainly being caused by the length of the hike, but nothing horrible.

Pleasant weather the entire hike, cool temps and sunny and clear weather.

Did a counterclockwise Ford Canyon/Goat Camp loop with Barry Goldwater Peak the halfway and high point. Started at 6:30 in the dark on Waddell after parking between areas 8 and 9 near Ford Canyon.

Watched the sun rise on Waddell. Good visibility early, could see as far as Four Peaks, but it didn't last.

Saw four javelina on Ford Canyon around the dam. Just about no water in any of the tanks.

No human tracks in the wash between Goat Camp and the access road, and no tracks on the road for that matter. Didn't read the register, but I doubt many recent visitors. Very hazy toward Phoenix, couldn't really see past Piestewa Peak/Camelback. Darker on the other sides of the peak because of heavy cloud cover.

Saw a truck coming down from the Radio Summit, and it parked on the saddle below and watched me walk back down the road. First person I saw on the day until about half way down Goat Camp. Few people lower on the trail.

Goat Camp to Bajada to Mule Deer to Mesquite, and I was wishing I would have parked farther from Ford Canyon and gotten this stretch of the hike over with in the dark. Lots of car noise, and there were a dozen pairs of fighter jets buzzing around. Saw around 15 people on those trails.

If/when I do this one again I think I'd add the Radio Summit. Seems not too far out of the way from Goat Camp after it passes below the peak and a pretty straightforward bushwhack up the ridge.

After work jog. Started from where the Bajada crosses the road (conviently located next to some restrooms) and did a CW loop: Bajada-Mule Deer-South-Goat Camp-and then back on Bajada. Nice loop to jog. A little rocky in places, but compared to the Bajada at South Mountain it's as smooth as a baby's backside. Had the park to myself. Saw one chipmunk and that was it.

Belated Post. After work run in the White Tanks. Did a loop involving Bajada, Mule, South and Goat Camp Trails. Got on the trails a little before 4:30, starting from a small pull off/parking area that the Bajada Trail crosses. Did the loop in a clockwise manner. Looks like they are doing some trail maintainence on the Goat Camp. The initial section of the Goat Camp, which is flat, is populated with large stones, or at least it was. I didn't go to the beginning of the Goat Camp, but the section that I was on had been smoothed out and many of the large stone removed. Not sure how I feel about that. It makes running easier, but it takes away some of the character of the trail. Also, the stables that boardered the Mule Trail are either being renovated or have been relocated. There's construction going on, but no signs of the horses. Mixed feelings on this as well, pretty much for the same reason. The horse rides that occurred from these stables, tore up the trails and created ruts on many of them. But they did add character to the area and created a bit of nostalgia of times past. Oh well. I have a feeling that the new construction is going to result in a Starbucks.

Last weekend I did the Ford Canyon to Mesquite Canyon and today hiked the Goat Camp to Willow Canyon. Both have their interesting bits, but I have to say I really enjoyed the Goat Camp to Willow Canyon. Goat Camp has some rough sections heading up into the mountain, but for most part was a very nice easy trail looping along the mountain side up towards the base of the radio towers. With the recent rains there was nice amount of moisture on the ground and air adding to that classic desert smell. I was also greeted by a family of coyotes. One had to be within of a quarter mile of me because of loud he/she was coming it. Though I squinted as best I could, I saw nothing. Maybe next time. Anyway, once again getting out past the 2 mile mark there was total solitude and stayed that for most part on Goat Camp. Once the turn down Willow Canyon was made quite a bit more people and mountain bikers showed. Next time I may have to combine Goat Camp with Ford Canyon.

Short morning hike. I've been fighting something the last several days, so I decided to take it easy. Went out to the White Tanks and parked at the "midway" point (where the Bajada crosses the road). Got out there around 7am, first hiking north to where the Bajada meets the Mule Trail. Then turned around and retraced my steps and did the trail on the west side of the road. Nice easy walk. Encountered 3 bikers, lizards and some chipmunks. Surprised (and a bit bummed) to see the radio towers were getting some rain. (Bummed because I had been up there last week under clear skies...it's all in the timing). Still, I had clouds on this hike which made it very pleasant. While doing the Bajada, I came across an interpretive trail that has become forgotten and is falling into neglect. Pathetic and, in a weird way, nostalgic, about what use to be. This trail was located where the ranger station use be located 6-7 years ago. The White Tanks (which should be known as the bench capital of parks with all the benches they have dedicated in memory of someone) has 3 benches on this interpretive trail. Feel sorry for people who donated money for these benches because not many people will see/use them.
