Big Loop around Mt Elden using various trails. This is a great route. It was hot but I had a water stash at mile 15 which was a life saver. Felt surprisingly good :y:

Got a late start due to looking at the 1883 Arizona Mineral Belt railroad survey notes in the NAU archives. Started a sunset hike on Schultz Creek but a monstrous thunderstorm soon approached and I wisely retreated to the trailhead. Got some storm and lightning shots before approaching bolts sent me to my truck. The sky turned into a violent lightning show with massive downpour on the drive to dinner at Fratellis. Exciting! Camped out near Mormon Lake that night.

This outing makes 2 months of getting out each weekend. Each one diff than the others. Meet in PHX at 6:30. Pile into a single vehicle. Reach TH by 8:50 at parking area B4 road closure.

Several new trails in this area have been opened & many others decommissioned. Therefore my route may not coincide with the HAZ map. Our route was going as planned till we found Weenie Walk blocked off. The nearest trail was also covered.

We then decided (at my encouraging 😋) on a steep off trail. The two who were still going were relieved when we reached a trail as skies were threatening. Added a high point through the storm.

Loop back was mostly easy from there. Finally returned to PHX at what some would deem an acceptable time.

I planned to start from the Sunset Trailhead, but I wasn't aware that Schultz Pass Road is closed for a fire thinning project. I was able to quickly adjust and found the other end of where I was going to end my hike where the AZT intersects Snow Bowl Road. There are two small parking areas there, so I pulled in one of them and was on my way.

Temperature was pretty cool to start at 45 degrees so I put on a sweatshirt. It didn't take long to not need it, but it also never got warm enough to need to take it off. Most of this section is very level and goes thru the ponderosas with some open meadows here and there and glimpses of the San Francisco Peaks. At about 9:20am I could tell that the eclipse was dimming the sunlight enough to make things look odd. That only lasted about 25 minutes and then everything was normal again.

Just passed the split of the urban and equestrian bypass along the equestrian bypass was the nicest spot that opened up and gave the best view of the peaks. Lots of color on the south slopes from the aspens and some other trees.

I took the AZT all the way to the start of Passage 34 by the Weatherford TH and then took the Schultz Creek Trail back to Passage 33. At that junction I took a lunch break and then hiked 3/4 of mile south on 33 and headed back up to 34 and back to where I parked.

Saw only a few hikers, mostly bikers, but not even a whole lot of those. No wildlife other than some chipmunks. 7 hours of hiking through the pines in 60-70 degree weather, very peaceful.

Checking out the new alignment of Schultz Creek Trail with my Forest Service intern and their Coconino supervisor. Got to see the mini-excavator at work and watch an AZCC crew build new trail tread.

I have always wanted to circumnavigate the San Francisco Peaks and I finally got the chance with this event.

Long day out there with plenty of highs and lows to really make the most of it. It was a small, well run event and I had the experience I was hoping for. Beautiful weather and blazing aspen all over the place were the icing on the cake.

Michelle and Sierra surprised me and met me at the 20 mile aid station before the big climb up to the inner basin and that was probably the highlight of the day. The last 3.5 miles were in the dark.

What a day! :y:

I passed through Flagstaff as recently as last October, on my way to see the fall colors in the Inner Basin [ photoset ] , but we took I-40 out to the east side, rather than driving through town. Seems like a lot has changed since we last drove through the west side, 18 months ago: There’s all kinds of construction along Milton Rd., and other buildings abandoned and fenced off. Downtown, there’s a new hotel across from Wheeler Park. Flagstaff is, unfortunately, becomming more city-like with each passing year. 😕

Today’s plan was to park at the bottom of Schultz Pass Rd. / FR 420, then hike a loop of Rocky Ridge Trail #153, bits of Lower Oldham Trail #1 and Brookbank Trail #2 across the Dry Lake Hills, FR 789 (aka “Little Gnarly”) to the Sunset Trailhead, then Schultz Creek Trail #152 back to where I started.

There’s a few small boulders sticking out here & there, but Rocky Ridge Trail #153 is in great shape. I saw precisely one blooming claret cup cactus and one indian paintbrush on #153. I didn’t see another flower until the prairie in the middle of the Dry Lake Hills. There were a number of slash piles in the first two miles, including the biggest one I’ve ever seen. 😳

There was plenty of shade the first two miles of Rocky Ridge Trail #153; not so the third & final mile, as it lies within the Museum Fire‘s burn area: The section along Mount Elden Lookout Rd. was a moonscape: One large tree was hollowed out by the fire, and many smaller ones were burnt down to 6″ stubs. 🔥

At the intersection of Rocky Ridge Trail #153 and Oldham Trail #1, there was a Forest Service sign announcing “Trail closed to all traffic including foot traffic.” Bummer. I headed up Mount Elden Lookout Rd. instead.

In a ¼ mile, at the bottom of Brookbank Trail #2, there was another Forest Service closure sign. I could have headed back the way I came with a low drive time ROI, or snuck past the sign when nobody was looking. But then it occured to me that I swear the Museum Fire closures had recently been rescinded! Luckily I had cell signal, and was able to scroll back through the Coconino National Forest‘s twitter feed, and there it was on April 28: Closure lifted. Sweet! 👍

Despite heavy fire damage, the dead needles in the upper reaches of the pine trees provided pretty good shade as Brookbank Trail #2 headed up canyon.

At the top of the climb, I veered right along a use trail, rather than head straight across the prairie. That took me to north end of the cattle tank which is the prairie’s highlight. Rather than taking pictures into the sun, my position gave me a quartering light, making the water & trees pop.

Little Gnarly had many large log decks, which are unstable, dangerous, piles of harvested logs being staged for transport. Give them a wide berth.

Rather than head straight to Schultz Creek, I split right towards Sunset TH, because I am a completist. 😏

From Sunset TH, I started down Schultz Creek Trail #152. Unlike the other trails, Trail #152 also had tons of mountain bikes. Thankfully, they were all considerate and friendly. I ate lunch and enjoyed a hiking beer — Brouwerij Bosteels Tripel Karmeliet, a Belgian abbey beer rated 99 out of 100 — in a shady spot next to Schultz Creek.

After lunch, I hauled the last couple of miles back to where I started. I was expecting Schultz Creek Trail #152 to be shadier, but it had plenty of sun too, and my wife commented on the burn I’d acquired. Great day and the best part was we were back home in Phoenix by 4:30 p.m.! 🍦

Precisely one blooming claret cup & one indian paintbrush. Ironically, within feet of each other on Trail #153. Fair number of dandelions around the tank and down Little Gnarly. And some yellow flower I don't know along Schultz Creek. (Looked like a ground-hugging yellow holly.)

We were in Flagstaff for a ski trip and our lift passes were for the next two days so I was happy to have a chill day and do some hiking. The road up to snowbowl was gridlocked, so we turned on Schultz Pass, thus avoiding the traffic.

The snow was patchy, but it was still work, so after a few miles in we connected to the road and followed it back to the trailhead. The trailhead was dominated by families of sledding children. It was my first time in this area and I enjoyed it enough to hope for a return trip someday.

Did this on the mountain bike as an out and back. Started at the lower parking lot and went up to the Sunset trail head and back down. I did this one other time and it was May of 2013. Not much has changed since then. It does seem like there has been and/or will be some reroutes towards the bottom in a few small sections. I noticed some small flags and evidence of trail work. I also found that my full suspension bike had no rear brake so I took the hardtail, I really wished I had my full suspension. Weather was great on the mountain btw.

This typically easy for me hike was among my most difficult, in the end it was among the most rewarding.

2.9 mi on Rocky Ridge Trail #153
Appropriately named compared to other tails in the area. I'd imagine some mountain bikers enjoy the course as the rocks have a firm hold making it more fun than irritating.

left 0.25 mi on Oldham Trail #1

left 3.5 mi on Brookbank Trail #2
Immediately climbs up into the Dry Lake Hills. The only good ascent picking up 700 ft in 1.25 mi. Lots of courteous mountain bikers passed by announcing their presence and the number remaining in their group.

right 0.35 mi on Sunset Trail #23 - Flagstaff
Pines thinned for this short 200 ft descent. Passed several runners throughout the day. Two chicks at the top of this trail got our attention minutes after passing. We realized how impressive their pace was considering they just topped out a 200 ft ascent.

left 3.55 mi for the entire Little Bear Trail #112
Dense pines returned. Then they thin before what looks like a monster descent. Views of NE Flagstaff are scenic, especially now with fields of yellow wildflowers.

I deemed this trail the "find" of the day 1.55 mi in, the next 3 miles slapped back hard. The monster descent joke was on us. This trail drops 1,118 feet in the subtle fashion. There was no quick drop. The grade is steady throughout. Most will enjoy, the dragged out switchbacks were just wearing on me.

Anyone that has hiked with me knows I can whine like no other. This slow down grade just wasn't pumping blood thus amplifying every ache along with lack of sleep. B & D absorbed more of my nonsense than any human should fall victim.

left 4.9 mi on Little Elden Trail #69
Bruce thought this would be a 500 ft ascent to Schultz Tank. It turned out to be a ridiculously subtle 350 ft. In all fairness these trails are designed for mountain bikers and ascending period was better than slow descending.

I mentioned earlier our friendly mountain bikers would give way to afternoon riders. Less announced their approach, none notified group number remaining and their speed was blazing at times. No issues, we're friendly aware hikers. Just pointing out morning nets better results in my experiences when hiking popular mountain bike areas.

continue 4.2 mi / -920 ft for the entire Schultz Creek Trail #152
This is a cool trail weaving next to the dry creek and nearby road. Pines provide shade throughout.

Synopsis
Bruce knew I needed an easy course. As much as it dragged out and amplified various pains the net result was monumental. After the hike my left fist which had been clenching for months is now sometimes at ease. I can move my fingers outward for the first time. Albeit ever so slow, this new hope is a lot to take in. Huge thanks to B & D for putting up with the world's biggest baby. They monitor me, the footing, among other tasks helping me sit, stand and the constant struggle with my pack.

One improvement on hydration was a success. I have an idea that should put pack stress to rest and we believe a little change in nutrition will make it easier too.

Up to the High country to enjoy the Temps.
53 degrees to start, mid 70's most of the day, hitting the low 80's in the exposed sections

Along the Rocky Ridge #153 trail there has been a lot of thinning going on. This trail roller coasters up to the Lower Oldham Trail, that we were on for just a stones throw.

Brookbank #2 climbs to the NW, affording good views of Mt Elden. Once you get up around peak 8747, the views open up to "The Peaks". On the Sunset #23 Trail for a snippet of time, we made our way over to the Little Bear #112.

This was my first time on Little Bear #112 and it had some big pluses and minuses. It goes through the old burn area, so you loose the trees. For me at the top, this was actually a plus. The views are huge as the trail follows on the side of the mountain. There of signs of reforestation, with scads of cone protected, 18" tall pine saplings planted everywhere. This trail drops almost 900', taking more than 3.5 miles, through exhausting switchbacks. I say exhausting, because the JBM was in full force once again.

The Little Elden Trail #69 / AZT, is a pleasant trail making its way up to Schultz Tank and the Sunset TH. We passed Thelma and Louise on Horseback.

The Schultz Creek #152 Trail is a gentle downward grade, in the pines, taking us back to the truck. We saw 5+ elk on the way down.

I couldn't count the number of mountain bikers we saw on this hike. They were out in full Fource...

The phrase that pays, two weeks in a row.
"What I meant to say was, Thanks"

Did we have a good time,

The trails were in great shape all the way up! In addition to a few hikers, saw a half-dozen mountain bikers and a pair of equestrians, so not terribly crowded. Had a guest dog along; he loved it.

No complaints here. Trail is in great shape. Junction with Oldham 1 wasn't clearly marked from what I could tell; it's possible I picked up a social trail instead of official route.

SATURDAY: Helped out a bit at the Arizona Trail Days in Flagstaff on Saturday. It's really a very nice event with vendors and hikers and horseback riders and Jasmine the donkey of course. I was very impressed with Jack Welch who received special recognition. He has contributed a lot to the outdoor life around Flagstaff: azdailysun.com/news ... html.
I happened to be in the right place at the right time so ended up volunteering to being the cashier in the beer garden where Wanderlust Brewing was serving up three lovely craft beers including Arizona Trail Ale. They were very gracious and also donated all proceeds and tips to the Arizona Trail. I found their coffee stout very good and they tell me there is a fine wheat beer they serve at the brewery. I like their theme as it matches up with my signature, "Beers for the Journey".

SUNDAY: Back to the hike. Wendy was ill so couldn't join me. I drove on Elden Springs Road which is in very good shape to Schultz Tank TH where I started. I've parked at this TH a few times but had never gone to see the Tank. There are even some ducks in there. I headed west toward the Sunset TH on an unnamed trail. There were a few cars at the TH and at the Trail gate there was a sign about a "bears" spotting. Well how 'bout that! The Little Gnarly Trail is actually part of the Schultz Loop trail and is a pretty nice road. Eventually you work your way up and up and up on this road encountering some aspen along the way.

The forest service has been active in here as well as on other parts of this route as there is a lot of road work going on as you make your way to the Dry Hills lakes. There is lots of drainages and tree trunks with orange markings. I topped out at the lake, it was pretty full. I took some photos and worked my way around to the right and over to the signs about Brookbank Meadow (mostly for my youtube viewers).
From there I continued on the road/trail and decided at the fork to go left but not before taking pictures of quite a mixture of wildflowers. I also noticed this big batch of white something on the top of a tall fir tree... it was all pine cones so I zoomed in for some pics. I encountered two other hikers who said there was a nice viewpoint at the end and to climb up on the rocks... and so I did. I was hoping the trail would continue west from here to hook up with Lost Burrito but it dead ends. I dubbed this Little Gnarly Pointe.

I headed back and went down the Jedi which is in pretty rough shape from all the rain. I hope the bike riders will be careful as some of their bridges and such are not serving their purpose anymore. I stopped and admired the aspen grove/meadow; sure is pretty :) . I did encounter a trail runner coming up the trail. It does have a couple tight switchback sections that one needs to be a bit careful on. Then I hooked up with a connector trail that takes you up to Sunset or down to Schultz Creek so I headed down Schultz Creek Trail as I decided to take that back to the TH as I hadn't been on it before. It is close to the road in parts so I hoped the traffic noise wouldn't be too bad and it wasn't. There was even a tad of water in the creek.

At the Sunset TH I talked to a couple motorcyclists and was commenting about the the orange striped forest. He said he had talked to a forest service person who said they were working on trying to restore the region to the way it was before we came along. Personally I don't think it's "we" that caused the change but the cyclical climate change. Anyway, there were many orange marked trees thruout my hike so it looks like they plan to be pretty aggressive about it.

I continued on the Sunset Trail to the other side of Schultz Tank and then down to the TH via Schultz Tank. It is a pretty site with the SF Peaks in the distance.

A note, the aspen were starting to turn in some areas already. I could see at the top of Elden quite a bit of yellow. Interestingly, the aspen were turning at different elevations on my hike which was odd. You would think only at the top but even around Schultz Tank there was some aspen turning.

It was a perfect day for a hike though a bit windy at times. I changed my pants and shoes, sent a couple pics on FB and headed to Subway for a sandwich to eat on the way home. Today I took the time to stop at the rest stop where you can see the landmarks of Sedona in the far distance. I haven't stopped here in a couple decades I bet. I remember stopping here with my mother for the first time and how amAZed we were.

Beginning at the Schultz Creek trailhead, this is an excellent mtb loop and a nice hike, split almost evenly between uphill and downhill sections. In a clockwise direction, starting at 6:00, head north on Schultz Creek Trail until splitting with Moto to the west. Moto continues until a right onto the AZT, and east again on to the Secret Trail until reaching the high point at Sunset Trail Parking Area. From thereon, it's all down hill:), and likely the most enjoyable downhill I've ever been on.

On a Friday the trails were quiet, only seeing a couple of hikers and a handful of bikers throughout the several miles. The potentially ominous weather helped, offering sprinkles and welcoming cloud cover throughout the ride. Thick into the pine forests, Moto, AZT, and Secret Trail within the Fort Valley trail system offer plenty of solitude with the exception of the wind carving through the endless pines. There was some trail maintenance with a dozer widening/leveling the trail in several spots.

Schultz Creek is a windy downhill from Sunset into the creek bed, rarely seeing sunshine from the overhanging pines. It's an superb downhill on a bike, which could be a drawback for hikers on the trail - some two-wheelers might be coming down with some serious speed and it's narrow at points. Popular with hikers and their four-legged ones, speed really had to be watched going aroud some turns not knowing who or what may be ahead. Forewarn to no matter what you're doing, it's a multi-use trail. I'd recommend it for a hike, but probably only on a weekday due to the biking popularity.

My personal mistake on this loop was that after splitting off onto the AZT, I then turned back on to Upper Moto, extending too far north ](*,) . Too stubborn to turn around, I decided to use the access road through the power corridor to return to the trail. It's safe to say that the power road was designed for 4x4s, not bikes...after some exhaustion I returned to the trail with only a little uphill remaining...more than ready for the downhill.

Note - photos are from vista just before trailhead.

Waiting for the rain to stop so I could snap some photos of the large wildflower field on the corner of Ft. Valley and Schultz Pass rd.
So I decided to take a brisk walk down the SC trail to see if there was any water flow in Schultz Creek since Iv always been curious about it. Well in that short area I observed there was no actual water flow, just patches of puddles in the creek bed, although I'm curious to know if it's flowing at any point since I didn't walk far. It's too bad Flagstaff doesn't have numerous lush perennial creeks like the White Mountians.

the featured hike for the weekend :)
angela had done a similar loop a couple weeks ago [ photoset ]
she found a couple of obscure mountain biking trails and put together this loop
after a big girl breakfast, took off from schultz creek trailhead around 8:30
took rocky ridge for a half mile, then up lost burrito, which is not on any map that i've seen
decent trail through pine forest, with a steep scree section toward the top - best to go up this
took a little break where the trail plateaued, then went through open meadow and past two of the dry lakes
i had never been up there, so it was a nice visual surprise
continued over to brookbank meadow and checked out a small pond
saw a few mountain bikers and two hikers up top
another break after turning onto jedi, mostly to enjoy the scenery
took jedi down to little gnarly
jedi is a nice singletrack trail that has a few jumps and drops
one beautiful small meadow ringed with aspen along the way
little gnarly led to schultz creek trail, leaving 3.5 miles downhill back to the trailhead
i don't mind this trail, but i don't really like having to watch out for mountain bikers so i would probably find another way to do some of the other trails
much more to explore
angela picked a good loop
i had only been on the schultz creek trail (mountain biking, 15 years ago :o )
lots of wildflowers throughout the hike
clear skies at first, clouding up toward the end
pleasant temps the whole day
nice weekend getaway for sure, almost all of it on new trails
thanks for driving, angela - good times
