Turned into tourist day for me as I helped a group of four decide on where to go as I caught up to them when we reached A1 (not sure if it has a name) and they weren't sure where to go. I told them where I was going and that once they got out in the area to just turn left when they were ready to get back to the TH.

As I got to the trail that takes you to the Shoes, I encountered another gentleman who was trying to figure out how to finish off this loop he had copied from All Trails. He showed it to me and I just shook my head. I gave him the All Trails lecture. Then the other four joined us and they had a much better map. I tried to help to figure out how to get the gentleman to where he wanted to go which was via VOAZ. I didn't want him to go down the Irregular as he was elderly.

After discussion, we all ended up going the VOAZ route. Come to find out, this elderly man from Minnesota was 80 :o . Needless to say I was impressed as he knocked out the VOAZ at about my pace; and I wasn't really in the mood for much elevation today (I think yesterday's evening barbell class wore me down before I started, ha!). Anyway, I was glad to be able to follow him up the mountain. He did trip a lot but seemed to manage control. I sat with him at the saddle while he drank some water and re-grouped. I told him I would wait for the others.

When the others arrived, I learened they were all from Boston, altho one couple has been in the Valley for five years. I told them the option I was hiking and that it would be about another 3 miles or so. They opted to take VOAZ back down and go back from there. We talked a little more and I took their picture for them. They were surprised I was from Montana as they said most people they run into are from the Midwest. Stay tuned for the rest of the story.

We parted ways and I headed down the southside. The breeze seemed to pick up so I enjoyed that. I saw the 80 year old hiker heading up 302 so I was glad he found his way. I hope he was able to reunite with his wife, once she figured out where he was. I headed up the high side of the 1a shoe. I really noticed the quartzy section with the desert flora as I got to the top of the Perl Charles Shoe.

As I headed west I dreaded that one short hill that seems to go straight up, but it wasn't really bad at all. I haven't been up this little hill in a while. I continued west on 1a past VOAZ and Irreg C and then around to hook up eventually with the Dreamy Draw Trail and ... wait, where have you guys been? I ran into the four hikers. They really weren't sure how they got there and if they were on the right trail. So off we went up and over the hill to hook up with Dreamy Draw Loop.

We got separated as the one couple got ahead of us and then I realized we were going the longer way around the loop instead of the cut off; but, no matter as we would end up in the same place. The couple with me seemed fine with that though. We said our goodbyes where the nice restrooms were. They were heading to the Biltmore. I told them that's where I first worked when I came here in 1981.

Anyway, it was a delight to have some folks to hike with off and on. It made the hike less arduous and more fun.

Needed to go to Trader Joe's so planned this hike prior. It was a nice afternoon as I headed out to do a counter-clockwise loop. My legs still seemed sore from my Sunday hike and Monday gym class, so I already tried to figure out a lesser loop. I continued around Happy Hour Ridge until the west side where I decided to tackle the hill up and over and eventually join up with 100. The crossover was a new trail to me and it zig zagged a bit but got me to where I wanted to be.

My objective for the day was to find the route to the new trail I saw when I was last out here. It meets up with 1a just before it starts climbing south to the saddle. Surprisingly, with more zig zag and zag zig, I met right up with it without backtracking or anything. That was also new trail to me. I finished off the southside of 1a and headed over to 8. I crossed over a tad too soon and made my way over to the wash, in and out and headed south back to 38th St. I took off my hat and sunglasses to enjoy the deeply overcast skies. Near the TH a mom and her two sons asked me where the parking lot was. I told them and showed them. I sure hope that's the one they started at.

I saw 8 hikers, and 8 bikeriders, 2 squirrels, 1 hummingbird.

WATCH actually told me I completed my objective when I still had another couple miles to go.
4.72 mi, 3:10-4:44PM, 1471-1741 elevation, 132 bpm/161 max, 34% Zone 5 max, 55% Zone 4 anaerobic, 10% Zone 3 aerobic burning 635 calories (In N Out burger/fries 720). Temp was a lovely 73.3, 18% humidity (seemed higher), wind at 3.7mph from the south.

Harem (Carey, Christina, Yolanda) hike at Dreamy Draw today. Found one of the last spaces in the parking lot at 8:30 this morning. Lots of big groups mulling about trying to get started. We had a plan and were ready to execute. Headed south out of Dreamy Draw to eventually hook up with Perl Charles counter clockwise, to Irregular Link, Perl Charles again for a minute, and back on Dreamy Draw Nature Trails. Not as cold this morning. Nice overcast skies. Winds were calm. Lots of people on the trails. Saw 3 bikers. Many cute dogs, a few cute dog owners. Delicious post hike treats a Safeway.

I had something else planned but it didn't quite workout so this was Plan B. I do enjoy this Preserve as you can mix and match to the level you enjoy, but still put in some work. I came in from 38th St and on the initial hike south, they're wasn't hardly anybody about. However, I would soon see hikers, bikers, and dogs.

I decided to do 1A and noticed what I thot are new colored signs from here and on the rest of the hike. Along the way was a big downed soldier; always so sad to see. As I headed south on the last part up to the saddle I noticed a new trail, and by gosh, there sure is. It gives you the option to hang an east. And then as I was climbing the last hill, I noticed these terrace-like rock walls protecting small saguaros on the side of the trail. They look great.

I continued over the saddles. In the distance I could see a big section of gold grass in the middle of a mountainside; it really stood out so I tried to capture a picture of that. I headed west on the 304 Nature Trail and started noticing trail work. I got to the intersection with the 302 and headed south again before turning east on the connector trail. I wasn't sure if I would head up the 304 until I got there. Once again, I noticed trail work and had decided to head up the 304 and down the 8.

Descending the 8 I saw another big soldier down but also, significant trail work as this is usually quite rocky. They aren't done yet, but don't have much further to go. I see where they added another little rock wall around a little saguaro and soon I saw a sign to thank the trail stewards. They really are doing a nice job and adding some creativity. I decided to continue on 8 thru the wash and then head north. Once I got on 100 and then headed across the last wash, there are a few different trails so I tried a little divergence before getting back to Tonto.

This time I remembered my Huck It, however, it was a tad cold but I decided since I brot it, I needed to drink it. Plus I needed to kill some time, so it would be around dinner time and I could go for my In and Out burger, my alterior motive for hiking over here  .

I ran three devices, watch and phone and RS. I did read that if I reset my watch, it might help with the technical issue of it recording walks instead of what it should be recording, the hike.

Phone: 2:59-4:47PM, 5.10 miles burning 667 calories, 1532-1848 elevation. Temp 66.1 sunny with some overcast, 7% humidity, a breeze depending on which way you were hiking.
Watch: 676 calories, Temp 64.4, 140 avg bpm

Not too shabby of a hike completed three weeks post appendectomy. Well organized, fun romp but likely one and done for this circuit. I was happy to have Kriket along for company on summits 2, 4 & 7. Dreamy Draw start sixteenth of 104 finishers. 8:55:44 total time.

Phoenix 7 Summit Challenge (2nd time): Begin at 0500, and complete 7 hikes for a total of 22.8 miles with AEG of 5600 feet within 12 hours.

1) Sidewinder to Ridgeback Overlook (2.85 miles, 483 feet AEG, 44 minutes): Began at 0520. Many people had started at 0430, and a number of them were finishing as I was starting. Completely dark except for the headlamps. Flat for almost a mile, then a nice ascent to the peak, then back down. Nice warmup, fun.

2) Lookout Mountain Summit (2.89 miles, 640 feet AEG, 53 minutes): Flat / mediocre for the first mile, then more interesting after that as the slope increased. The last 200m consisted of light scrambling to reach the peak. This was fun.

3) VOAZ peak from Dreamy Draw Trailhead (3.14 miles, 537 feet AEG, 52 minutes): First 200m on concrete walkway. Some nice views of the surrounding peaks. The official route was not marked, and there were multiple forks, so there was occasional confusion about which way to go, but we figured it out. This felt a lot shorter than it was, and felt like we reached the "peak" quickly. This was fun too.

4) Piestewa Peak (2.33 miles, 1151 feet AEG, 84 minutes): Better than last year. Just kept climbing up, stopped at the top for about 5 minutes. My knees were feeling it on the way down. This area was supposed to be closed off for the event, and parking was no problem, but there were still many people on the trail.

5) Las Lomitas Trail to Ranger Summit (3.62 miles, 940 feet AEG, 74 minutes): Las Lomitas trail was boring. Ranger Trail became interesting with decent views after it crossed the road and began climbing. There were great views at the top. Made some new friends on this one.

6) Alta Trail (3.28 miles, 786 feet AEG, 72 minutes): The official starting point was not at the trailhead but further back on the road. This one had a number of switchbacks, and felt a LOT longer than it actually was. The views were decent.

7) Holbert Trail (4.65 miles, 991 feet AEG, 126 minutes): This one was fun, with good views along the way, some mini scrambling, and a lot of people (many of whom were doing the 4 or 5 summit challenge). Good vibes all around.

There was also a total of over 2 hours of driving between trailheads. The sky was overcast most of the day. Overall a fun day and a good challenge. Hamstrings were pretty sore at the end. Spent about 10 minutes at the festival afterward, enough to pick up our free food/drink, then head back home to the shower and hot tub.

Plan A from yesterday since my phone was fully charged. I just wanted it to get pictures. I decided to start from the official 40th St TH and to hike in the afternoon as the temp was supposed to be perfect with some cloud cover and wind; what more could I ask for.

I headed up the wide and rocky trail that goes to Peak 2429 and also takes you to the junction with Trail 100 where I hung a right (west) to hook up with LV Yates #8 where I hung a left and headed south. The brisk wind was pretty chilly when it gusted but the sun kept me warm. The trail is fairly nice as I continued until you start going up. Besides being green all around you, now the bit of poppies and lupine started showing up in the same area it did last year. I would encounter hikers coming down and one passed me on the way up to the saddle.

And now to switchback my way down and over to the old road/trail leading to Ruth's house. It seems like it's taking a long time to get this house finished. I took some pictures of the poppies as I made my way closer on the trail that takes you to the house. I am always impressed with the landscape around the house with all those fabulous Organ Pipes. I then headed west on Ruth Hamilton Trail. I would encounter a few hikers. When I hit the intersection with the #8 trails I decided to go up the hill to the next saddle just to get some more elevation. That's not the easiest in a couple sections; especially since I'm having such trouble with my right leg.

Once I got to the saddle I remembered the trail I saw when coming up 8B a while back. A couple hikers were sitting on the top bench and offered to give me a spot to sit but I told them I wanted to investigate this trail. The gentleman said he had taken it one time and it wrapped around... I thot he meant clockwise but it wraps north and west. The narrow trail (my name for today: New Discovery) contours alongside the mountain and has a little up and down until you finally come to a nice saddle. From here I could see the next area that the partially shaded trail led to. It had some tricky spots and I kept wondering if I would have to go back the same way.

I encountered the two hikers and their dog that were on the saddle in front of me. I fully expected to turn around. I looked around and noticed another trail that went west so I thought I would check it out, which is what I continued to do. Every once in awhile it looked like the trail would end but each time it continued, though a bit dicey at times. The question was, where would it end up :-k . Finally I would see the trail ahead of me that would end at the saddle of the 304/8. Well that was fun. This is the third time this year (two of them in this Preserve) that I've found unmarked trails to follow.

I took the Nature 304 down and the connector to 302 and instead of doing the VOAZ which was in shade, I opted to head east to Perl Charles #1A and do the eastern part of the shoe. It's a gradual trail and goes over two saddles, so just right. It's very green through here as I made my way north and then east to hook back up with Charles Christiansen 100. It was a lot longer than I thot before I got back to the trail back to the TH. Still quite a few hikers and dogs out and about, but the lot was only half full.

WATCH 5.82 miles, 2:37-4:58PM burning 953 calories. 1517-2012 elevation. 132 Avg bpm/159 max. 9% Zone 4 Anaerobic (149-167bpm), 44% Zone 3 Aerobic (131-148bpm) 46% Zone 2 Weight Control (112-130bpm). TEMP was a lovely 68 degrees, partly cloudy, breeze and 34% humidity.

Hiking with the Harem (Dan, Carey, Yolanda). First time at Dreamy Draw since the remodel. Dan put together a loop of mapped and unmapped trails. Cool morning, nice as we approached lunchtime. Lots of hikers with dogs. Just a couple of bikers. Saw some horse riders too.

Wow, first mile was under 17 minutes. Good thing as mile four took 38 minutes, but that was a lot of elevation and did include a 3 or 4 minute break. I actually did the hike I planned in my mind, even though it was a Plan B due to an appointment on that side of town.

It was breezy when I started from 38th Street, but once I got on the east side of the mountain, it subsided. I made my way over to Trail 100 and headed west to hook up with a connector trail that would eventually round me over to the first shoe, Perl Charles. Along the way I found a large ring of rocks I have never seen before. I also ended up on a trail I had never been on before so that was fun. That seems to be happening a lot lately.

Once on Perl Charles 1A I took note of where the old VOAZ used to go straight up the mountain, still want to try that one day. I would take a picture of where it intersected with the NE side of the VOAZ trail. This north side of the shoe was in the shade until I got to the first saddle. I continued to the next saddle and down to the trail intersection. I hiked over, up and toward the next shoe. I was pushing myself a little and thus decided, since there was a bench part way up, that it was an invitation to sit and enjoy the moment. Three hikers passed by before I headed back up to do the second shoe, VOAZ. I encountered one hiker on my way up to the saddle. He commented about the sky.

Going down the north side was all in shade. At the mid-way saddle a military helicopter flew over as I encountered another hiker who said she hopes never to have to call for that kind of help. Not sure what made her say that. Anyway, I took off my hat for the rest of my hike as I continued down the VOAZ, crossed over 1A and headed over to the trail I like that takes you steeply up toward another saddle just below the Happy Hour Ridgeline. At the saddle I encountered a hiker and a bike rider. (I've sure said the word "saddle" a lot.)

I noticed a really steep trail that zigged west and then NE up to the Ridgeline but I opted to stay the course and headed up toward the ridgeline. It looks just a little intimidating and I haven't done this route for quite a few years. As I climbed and hiked my way east I enjoyed the geology and topography. The rockery is pretty cool with all the various colors and shapes. I could see at the top a person was sitting. It was a bit steep in places but I just took my time and huffed and puffed my way up to where he was. We spoke for a few minutes and I took in the view before heading toward Happy Hour Peak.

It's basically a rather steep climb up the Peak, so I opted to just head down (north). Wow is this sucker steep :o . Note to self, "next time go back the way you came". I'm glad I had my new shoes on to provide extra traction as it was pretty slippery as well. I do remember the last time I came down this was in the dark and I was slightly tipsy. Kathy and Karl didn't seem to have any issues with getting down  .

Once down to the first saddle I headed east again on somewhat of a use trail between the mountains until it peetered out, but then I found another more used trail and got back to the main track and headed on back to 38th Street. I picked up the pace and was once again glad that I had a good hike AND I still had lots of gas left. Fortunately, my back doesn't bother me when I hike. Now onto Trader Joe's. (I tried to walk away from the Brown Cow Imperial Milk Chocolate Stout and the Holiday English Toffee, but without success.)

An easy morning PMP hike with Dese to complete all my undone sections of the Perl Charles and a few other trails. The hiking alongside SR51 was annoyingly noisy and it smelled of vehicular exhaust, but the inner (eastern) sections of the loop were better.

I hadn't hiked out of the Dreamy Draw TH since it had been reopened. They did a wonderful job with the design on this. It mimics what they did with the Piestewa area.

I started a CCW on the paved East Dreamy Draw Bikeway to the Perl Charles Trail and hit up a few use trails, making my way to the Freedom Trail. I made the climb up the Freedom Trail to the Summit Trail and continued the ascent. I get a kick out of the different skill levels that are making/attempting the climb to the top.

I took a snack break at the summit and dried off in the breeze up top.

Down, down, down, and I continued my CCW loop on the Freedom Trail.

My favorite trail on this loop is the VOAZ. Nice geology, a pleasant track, and a moderate grade.

To finish this off, I headed to the other side of The 51 and took in the Mercury Mine Loop.

Filtered clouds and light breezes kept temperatures perfect for hiking. In the afternoon, the clouds started burning away, and I would get a little warm in the sun, but still very nice.

Was curious to check out the revitalized Dreamy Draw Trailhead. Didn't realize it was so far in from Northern Ave. On the way in I did see a Roadrunner cross the road. The last time I was here I had attempted a big loop but got sick and had to find someone to drive me back to Tonto from Piestewa TH. Anyway, they really have done a nice job with the amenities but it is quite the walk/hike up to the bathrooms with a picnic table layer in-between.

I really didn't know where I was going as I only glanced at the area on HAZ. I had a thot of what I wanted to do but it was warmer than I liked so I had decided I would just do 3 miles and call it good. However, I got some extra energy and there was just a touch of a breeze so I was able to do more. Let me just say, what a maze of trails out there, coming and going. I knew I wanted to head toward 1A and somehow make a loop out of that.

I was able to do that and would have done Irreg C if it hadn't been a little warmer than I like, altho in retrospect, I could have done it as I ended up doing the middle and eastern shoes. I'm trying to get some more elevation in my hikes and length too. Gosh, who knew it would be so hard to get back into hiking shape after a two month lapse  . I did fairly well on the two shoes, encountering only 3 hikers and one biker on the entire hike.

On the eastern shoe, there was this guy with shorts and sandals and no water; I bet the bottom of his feet will be a little sore as those sandals looked really thin. I got back to 100 and wanted to stay on that back to the TH but I ended up on 1A, I guess I should have zigged instead of zagged. As I hiked along I kept looking for the trail to go north in the direction of the TH but I didn't see it so I ended up using some other connector that got me to the Nature and Outer Loop trails. I opted for the Nature Trail and as I got further north, I knew it needed to split east/west. I pulled out RS to verify a western turn at an intersection.

I took the rampways back down to the parking lot after stopping for a swig of water. It was a good hike except I did hit a bit of brick wall and took a sports bean to get my energy back; it seemed to work as I quit dragging. I'll probably try another hike from this TH as the maze of trails is intriguing. Oh, I almost forgot, I got a very raucous snarl from a dog that a hiker had to hold back; even though I had stepped aside as I heard its hostility immediately.

I hadn't hiked to this summit for nearly forty years. Meh. Similar to SoMo, just more crowded, louder vehicular noise from SR51 and no dogs allowed. I guess a few pluses were that there weren't mountain bikers constantly running you down and some great scenery occasionally. :pk: Definitely opportune if you live close by, but it won't be added to my regulars.
