13 years since I last hiked this loop. Kind of forgot how fantastic it is. Hieroglyphic canyon is just beautiful and relentlessly steep to go up. Glorious hike up the canyon. Pretty cool to be on the ridgeline again too. there is some burn damage up there. chilled on 5057 for a good while. great weather, great day, great hike

Tough hike yesterday up to Superstition Peak 5057 with a stop at Three Sisters. Started up the Carney Springs Trail at sunrise. I'd forgotten how much I 'love' Carney especially on the way down when you legs are a big bowl of jello. Made it to the saddle and took a break. Right after passing the headwaters of West Boulder Canyon, the Siphon Fire burn area started, roasting almost everything up to Three Sisters and Peak 5057. We climbed up and visited the Three Sisters for a bit before continuing the climb up to 5057. The trail after Three Sisters is steep with no room for error and I have a pretty bad fear of heights from one story fall when I was a kid, my anxiety kicked in here and my pace slowed to a crawl trying not to look down :scared:. We spent some time at the peak taking in the views where several other groups also came out, before heading back down. Came across a couple of groups on the ridgeline including a guy who was sitting at the 5057 junction lost (he was using All Fails of course lol), and wanted to know how to get back down, apparently he was doing the Hiero loop. The toughest hike I've done in a while but the views are phenomenal.

I started out wanting to hit Robbers Roost, but Jason mentioned going up to Three Sisters instead. That then morphed into going to 5057.

We arrived at the Carney Trailhead a little past 7am and there was already 10-15 vehicles already parked. It was a little chilly and I had to deploy another layer before heading out.

It’s been a while since I have been up Carney and I knew it would kick my butt. I was also prepared for the beating the Ridgeline Trail would give me going up to the Sisters as well.

It was a slow slog up to the Carney saddle, but we survived! The up and down of the trail going to the Boulder Saddle was nice. It looks like there are a couple of paths along this now. Once you get to the last little ridge, the trail gets unclear as it has been every time I’ve been up there. Looking across to the trail along the base of the Sisters, we could see the extreme fire damage done from the Siphon Fire.

The trail is clear from the saddle all the way up to the peak because just about everything was roasted. Some sections of this trail were moonscape. The last time I was up here in back in 2021, the effects of the Superstition Fire were still evident, but the grass had reclaimed the hillsides. I remember it being waist high along much of the path. That’s what fueled this latest fire. The new “normal” for this area now, I guess. It doesn’t take much for a fire to run right across the entire hillside because of the grass. There were still some sections that were spared, but this area has definitely been transformed into grassland now.

We took the bypass trail up to the Sisters saddle. This area was roasted as well. We took in the usual views. I ventured out as far as I dared to each spot and took my obligatory photos of the amazing views.
After taking a little break, we started up towards the 5057 summit. The trail was roasted all the way. In some spots, the trail is very precarious and is just a narrow strip along the slope with no vegetation to be seen. A good rainfall would wipe out big sections of this part of the Ridgeline Trail as there is nothing holding it to the hillside.

We made it to the base and turned off to make the final climb up. That’s a fun part as well with the climbing and rock sections. I always forget how getting to the actual summit is a little crazy. I made it up and got my views/photos.

It got a little busy while I was hiking down, 4 other groups passed me up going up.
We took a lunch break amongst the spires below the summit and enjoyed the nice weather.
The hike down was not as bad as we expected. The loose, rocky, steep and exposed trail is easier when gravity is your friend.

We made it down without too many issues, but we both were feeling it at the end. This hike extracts a price for sure. Carney is steep, the Ridgeline between the saddle and the Three Sisters has some crazy steep sections and the last mile up from there is not flat either. Then, you get to turn around and go back down all of that. We finish off this one at a slowpoke pace, but we survived to hike another day. I am happy I can still do these tougher ones and it will be a sad when can no longer do them. A great day in the Supes for sure.

I've recorded this loop five times and have probably completed it more than ten. I suppose it was time to publish a guide for it then. :-s Hieroglyphic Spring was still slightly trickling, but funky like usual. I'd guess the families and kids that only make it this far still think it's everything is awesome. It was enjoyable ascending the canyon for once without an obscene number of cairns along the way. Perhaps people are catching on that a duck every five feet really isn't necessary (reference the Wave Cave arrows erased for more context). It also was nice to experience the Supes in mid-May with all the wildflowers and fresh leaf outs. The heat usually keeps me away, but today had substantial wildflowers. The flaming yellow and red Dudleya stalks were peaking. I reached the summit in two hours and speaking of culmination, there was an entomology orgy of flying ants, bee flies and tarantula hawks circling. The former two groups were dive bombing and getting spunky with each other, where the ants were antisocial and not crossing over to the other species. :-k I was at the West Boulder Saddle before eight, about three hours into the hike, where there was still some good shade at the pass. After this brief and final break, the stretch dash got hot. Along Goldmine was the only place I saw another person, which was south of Turks Head. She had just turned around, informing me that half her water supply was gone, and she wouldn't be finding the bygone gold mine. Definitely a better, more diverse, scenic and challenging loop than the intensive forest bath of the [ Derrick - Horton Loop ]

This morning's plan was to hike something easier in the Supes than this loop. I hadn't hiked for about a week, recovering from a debilitating :sk: Strep throat infection and also had to work some. :( On the early drive east, one of the US60 road signs was displaying AZ88 closed - rocks on the road. (perhaps it displays that always). I suppose we're not doing any hikes from the Canyon Lake area. As sunrise broke, one could see that the NW Supes were getting some action, lots of lightning and rain. I settled on the Hieroglyphic TH because I had my car. We chose CCW because the lightning was very active up on the ridgeline. Usually I'd complete this great hike at a brisker pace, but Dese and I had to shelter three times total, as each wave of rain rolled through with the accompanying and uncomfortably close lightning strikes. The final wave soaked us to the bone, but the sun emerged quickly afterwards. We dried out nearing the 5057 summit. It would of been nice to relax longer there, but swarming termite orgies just aren't my thing. On the descent, a large Coatimundi band crossed in front of us. There were at least three, small young ones (so cute) in the group and they all bristled orange. I've never been able to get a good pic of Coatimundi. Another large adult and one baby crossed behind us after we passed. They look like little monkeys easily scrambling the Supes' rocky terrain. This was a tough hike for Dese, but she powered through. She'll get a good rest this weekend because she isn't allowed to hike in the Grand.

john suggested peak 5057 for our sunday hike
yet another hike i haven't done in several years
we got going right at 0510 from lost goldmine trailhead
shade for the entire uphill to west boulder saddle
some brush encroaching on the trail
took a minute at the saddle
we didn't always take the most efficient route, backtracking in a couple of spots
i didn't remember all the grassy areas toward the ridgeline
made our way to the summit and took a break for views, photos and snacks
returned the same way, briefly considering some extra credit back at the saddle
gnats joined the brush on the way down, but it really wasn't that bad going down carney
good peak and fun to be back up in that part of the superstitions
breakfast at bisbee breakfast club :)
thanks, john

5057 seemed like a good choice over doing Ord again. We started from Lost Goldmine in case we decided to return via Robbers Roost. Rising temps and time made for an easy decision to return the way we came once we got back to West Boulder Saddle.
The route has more side/spider trails than it used to, and most of them are cairned, making the trail tougher to follow. Things also look different now after the fire and all the growth following the winter rains.
The hike up is as I remembered. Work. Scenery is excellent though.
Descending was uneventful. The gnats were pesky the last couple miles, but fine if you keep moving.
Great to get back up on the ridgeline and the peak. Thanks Kelly. :)

Arrived at the Lost Goldmine East Trailhead around 1600. It was overcast, 60-70°, with intermittent rain sprinkles.

The Carney Springs Trail was a nice climb with great views. The drainage at the top was flowing pretty well, over 12 inches deep at some parts. The route to Robber's Roost involved a lot of route finding, with intermittent use trails, a lot of off-trail hiking, and some scrambling. At one point I followed a series of cairns north, scrambling up to a ridgeline, but discovered that I was way off route, heading further from Robber's Roost, so I had to backtrack.

Robber's Roost is dope. Climbed down and hung out there for a minute. After that, it was nice to have a defined trail to Fremont Saddle. Cave Trail had some steep downclimbs which were pretty gnarly with the wet rocks, especially since it was somewhat dark at this point. Peralta Creek was flowing strongly. Overall fun loop with excellent views and a few rough parts. Will definitely do again, but need to start earlier.

It was a great day to hit Superstition. I started at Carney (wave cave) trail and went counter clockwise. I did a side excursion and to the three sisters and the 5057 summit. It was nice seeing a fair amount of people up there tackling the harder stuff. There was a fair amount of water. I wish I had brought my water filter, because I did run out. It was toward the end, so not a big deal.

I hiked Superstition summit 5057 with friends. We decided to head up from Lost Goldmine East rather than the usual route through Hieroglyphic canyon. I don’t like to park at Carney Springs because I don’t have a current permit. No matter that nobody else does, LGME is only slightly longer with a prettier trail. The total trip was estimated ten miles. Late November temperatures were lows in 40s and highs in 60s. We set out at 7am just around sunrise. The skies were clear and there was a light breeze. These friends have not been up there before so we wanted to have plenty of time to get there and back. Time ticked away as we took the trail up Carney first to the false saddle and then to the West Boulder Saddle. Ever since I first saw it carved in rock, I call it “Windy Pass”. We spent some time socializing and taking pictures there, before moving along the Ridgeline West Boulder trail towards the summit. Being a retired teacher, I enjoy sharing things while hiking and I know this area very well.

In general there has been quite a lot of good fire recovery in the few years since Superstition fire roasted the area. Also the Ridgeline trail is much more travelled now than in years past making route-finding easy. I was surprised to find concentrations of isolated wildflowers still blooming. We passed one group of 4 backpackers and other groups of 2, 1, 2 and 3 before the summit ascent. We took lunch at the base of the final spur trail up to the 5057 crown. People usually congregate on top and the day was no exception. Visibility was not great but I always enjoy the 360 views. The Summit register ammo can has been missing the last few times I’ve been up there, so most likely gone forever. I enjoyed the enthusiasm of my gang experiencing their first summit. We met a group of 3 friends from California that generally had no idea where they were. I sort of watched for them on the way back, which was the same way for us. Turns out, I was the only one confused about where they were going lol. They got back without help and so did we. Pretty much nary a scratch, which for me was a nice change of pace.

I took an afternoon trip from Lost Goldmine east to explore a few things. First I headed toward the Dacite Mine (Pete Carneys mine). It is a short trail just off of LGM leading up toward the cliffs. Hang a right at the face and there is the entrance. The hole in the grate is big enough to get through but I didn’t go inside this time.

Once back on LGM I hiked toward Carney. I looked around the old camp for a while, and checked the water at the hidden Carney Spring source. It is actually about 150 feet northeast of the location on maps. The spring pin should probably be adjusted. It was dripping. There are pipes running parallel to the west side of Trail down to the concrete basin. There may be other pipes running all the way down to the spring box at the fence.

I crossed over the Ridgeline/Carney trail from the basin and headed up to the Shaka Cave. The rocks are a little loose as the trail doesn’t get much traffic. There is gradual incline up to a near scramble toward the entrance. I’ve been here many times over the years and it always seems timeless.

There are mortar holes and pottery sherds and other artifacts testifying to once inhabitation, at least seasonally. Please follow 'leave no trace'. Preserve the holes by not stepping on them, or removing arrowheads, etc. There’s an upper ledge in the back that I’ve never gone up to. I am unsure how to look without damaging anything. To be clear, I am not encouraging anyone climbing or digging in the cave. I headed back to the lot and arrived just in time for an amazing sunset.

It’s been several years since I last tackled the full ridgeline. Took my son and brother along, and decided to tackle in the opposite direction from last time—starting at Carney Springs and heading west, finishing off down the Flatiron route. I think this direction is slightly easier from a navigational standpoint.

We dropped our shuttle off on the Flatiron side and made it to Carney by 7 am. Enjoyed the initial climb up to the saddle by watching the sun rise on Three Sisters, with a backdrop of the moon still high in the sky.

From the saddle, 5057 comes into view, looking much farther away than it really is. Crossing Boulder canyon, the burn area comes into view and is an unwelcome companion for much of the rest of the ridgeline hike. Although much of the area got toasted, I was encouraged to see that at the base of many of the scorched trees, there were sprouts and other new growth, indicating that roots were still in tact and alive.

We took a side trip to tag 5057 on the east end, and up to 5024 on the west end. It was a refreshingly clear day, so views were nice.

Saw a handful of folks heading to 5057 from the Hiero route, and another handful coming the opposite direction from Flatiron.

Heading down Siphon Draw, there was a fair amount of traffic—but to be expected this time of year.

All in all a beautiful day to be on top of the Supes.

Went up Carney to Peak 5057. Fun. Yes up up up. Started to Flatiron and it got so windy... Seriously. Not worth risking. Couldn't see anything anyways so what's the point in going to Flatiron? So we got on the Heiroglyphics trail the went like 4 miles in the Lost Goldmine TH then back to Carney and back to truck. Hiked from headlamp to dusk. AWESOME.

Perfect day on the ridgeline with the mild temps and breeze. My wife and I returned after 10 years. The bones are a bit more creaky but it was just as beautiful. Was kinda busy with several groups hitting Three Sisters and others making the trek from Flatiron.
