Quick hike up wasson from kings canyon. Super windy which kept it from feeling overly hot. Saw a humongous black tail rattle snake 😎

Linda and I originally planned to hike a Wasson peak loop from Hugh Norris trailhead
But, the trailhead was closed due to a rabid fox in the area
We did the shorter version from king's canyon trailhead
Got going around 0845 up king's canyon trail, then the spur to the peak
Took a snack break and admired the views
Lots of wildflowers along the way
Heliotrope, desert chicory, poppies and lupine
A nice enhancement for the hike
Took Hugh Norris, Sendero Esperanza and Gould mine trails to close the loop
Windy, comfortable temps
Quite a few people hiking
Very enjoyable hike
Thanks for driving linda
No rabid foxes were seen today :scared:

Original plan was to hit Wasson from the Hugh Norris Trailhead. A bitey fox changed those planes, as the lower half of Hugh Norris was closed. Headed over to King Canyon trailhead and got started from there a few minutes later.

Headed up King Canyon. Steady incline, but moderate. The trail is in good condition. Tons of flowers and varieties, which was a nice surprise. Windy at times, but it felt nice.

Took a short snack break at the summit of Wasson. Had to settle for pastrami today since I was all out of steak, but I survived. Headed down Hugh Norris Trail (the open part), then down Sendero Esperanza and Gould Mine. Again, lots of flowers. Saw a fair amount of hikers on all the trails. I like this loop, and would hike it more often if it was a slightly shorter drive. Good day, and always fun to hike with Kelly.

Two loops starting from Kings Canyon. Up gould mine, then esperanza to the TH. ran the dirt roads back to Hugh Norris TH. Took that to esperanza junction and back to car. Then back up Gould mine and Kings to Sweetwater to Wasson. Down Hugh Norris to Esperanza and back on Kings.

Pretty nice weather though very humid. Felt pretty good

I had planned on driving somewhere so I could get in the ring of fire zone of this eclipse, but with all the hype and hoopla (not to mention gas prices and driving hundreds of miles just to look at the sun through glasses), I came to my senses and said no. I had purchased some eclipse viewing glasses, so wanted to use them. Of course, I could have done that in my backyard, but I came up with the idea to head back out to King Canyon where I had a promising hike 4 days prior and see if I could push further. I think I made the right decision. :)

I was kind of surprised not to see more cars in the parking lot when started hiking at 0700. I made it easily to where I was Tuesday and felt strong as I continued on, but there was a lot more elevation to contend with, so how would I do? I got to Sweetwater Saddle and felt okay, just a little tired from lack of activity. This spot is where I usually make my decision to continue on up or head back based on what my body is telling me. After a short break I decided to keep going. The initial phase of the eclipse had started. I knew the max coverage for Tucson was to be at 0933, so I took another long break at about 0900 partway up before the junction with Hugh Norris. I got the eclipse glasses out of the pack, and decided to hang out there until after max coverage. This way I could enjoy that special period of muted light and cooler air as the solar insulation is temporarily throttled. I have enjoyed this part before and am amazed how it affects wildlife, especially birds who become silent. It is a little eerie and probably freaks them out some. During my time stopped there various hikers passed by and I offered them a view through the glasses. They all were appreciative of that. :D

I felt good enough to head on up to the peak (especially after that long break ). I took another long break up top, visiting with two of the hikers I had met earlier. So, now it is around 1130, the eclipse is over and the sun is back to doing its thing. It is still staying pretty warm, and I am heading back in the heat of the day (probably high 80s). My main issues on the trail are the downhill hiking. I was a little apprehensive about this, but aside from having to be careful not to fall and such, the entire hike was pain free, just slow going. Of course, I had the trekking poles on this one, as I needed to give myself every advantage possible. : wink :

The other thing that added to my length of time out there was the need to take several shade breaks (where I could find it) on the way down. This was a smart move that kept me from getting too overheated. My water supply was also getting low , so I eased up on that too. It all turned out fine. It was a fun day and I enjoyed to social interactions. And another succesful pain free hike made it better! I felt pretty strong once again. :)

By the way, the eclipse did look pretty neat with the glasses.

Great day for Wasson! Arrived at 10am and had to wait a half hour for a storm to blow over, then Michelle and I started. Pretty humid for the first hour or so, then it dried out.

I'M EXCITED that as I logged this trip, my AEG on hikearizona.com tipped the 1,000,000 feet mark. Finally!!

saw a tarantula, rattlesnake and 2 tortoises!

hardly saw anyone. made pretty good time all things considered. hard to carry enough water in this heat and humidity.

I wanted to get in a short hike to take advantage of the warm conditions, before the storm roared in with a return to chilly weather. Having it be mostly cloudy during the afternoon made it just right. I walked the road up to Mam-A-Gah, then returned down the wash, which is always fun. Since there hasn't been a great deal of rain this winter, I was surprised to see how much water there was at the seep by the old dam/petroglyph area. There actually was a small flow in a few spots. Moist sand conditions extended downstream some distance. Quite nice. :)

In days gone by, you would see lots of vehicles in the lot during morning hours in cool season, but not many in the afternoon. That is not the case these days, as the lot can be nearly full even in the afternoon. I was surprised by the number of out of state plates, with most from California, but quite a few other states as well. I had some nice conversations with hikers I met while walking down the wash, and was kind of amazed by the number of first time visitors I encountered.

Field testing some new gear and prepping for a big trip in May. Did a double Wasson to dial things in. One of the few hikes in Tucson that you can just put your head down and grind it out without any route finding or rock hopping every 5 feet. Nice clean trail to follow.
