I was going to hike hike Porcupine Ridge, near Woods Canyon, but AZ-87 to Payson was closed down due to the Sand Stone Fire. I’ve hit the west end of the Rim pretty hard over the years, but was able to able to come up with this surprisingly quickly. 🙇🏻‍♂️

Descending 170 ft. in the first mile, the trail was often rooty, or rocky. Flowers were minimal. Fungi — despite the summer monsoon and overhead cover — nonexistent. But the overhead cover provided solid walking shade. Didn’t need it yet, though.

After a mile, Trail #171 breaks out into the open at the south end of the first fenced enclosure. Despite signs, the fence is no longer electrified. I checked. (And not by peeing!) Even if the fence was electrified, it could easily be walked across due to being collapsed. Not sure what it was protecting. The 1500′ x 150′ enclosure’s highlight was its tons of coneflower.

At the 1½ mile mark, there was a metal pole. McFarland Spring is 120 yds. southwest, across the creek. I could not find a spring pipe, but water was trickling from the boulders.

Back on trail, I saw five young gals hiking towards me. No, correction: Rather than in a file, they were line abreast. Turns out, they were doing a flower survey. (I think for the Forest Service.) Hey, me too! I told them what I had found so far. 😁

The trail continued to hug the treeline to the second fenced enclosure. The fence was intact, but no longer electrified. Again, no indication what the fence was protecting, other than a really nice patch of silvery lupine. (I low crawled the unbarbed fence for a closeup.) The dog-legged enclosure is 1100′ x 150′. The north end of the enclosure is the 2-mile mark.

Aspen Spring is at the 2⅓ mile mark of the trail. The spring pipe was bone dry, even in the small cave around the corner. A trickle of water seeped from the hillside. I was surprised to find a cabin, as I had not heard there was one here. There was an old stove, falling apart, outside the cabin. The gas pipe had a bullet hole, but the cabin’s collapse was not due to an explosion.

North of Aspen Spring, the draw tightens up. The trail moves up slope about 50 ft., rolling over small spurs and side creeks. I started finding many tight clusters of Nuttal’s linanthus. Just past the 3-mile mark, there were three rather fat pine trees. I didn’t measure, but they had to be 4′ diameter! I marked the pines as the “Three Kings” on the my GPS route. 👑

Pinchot Springs is supposedly around the 3⅓ mile mark of the trail. Despite five minutes of searching, I couldn’t even find a trickle. Good thing I carry plenty of liquids.

The trail reached Pinchot Cabin at the 3¾ mile mark. Unlike Buck Springs Cabin, which was locked, Pinchot Cabin’s door was nailed shut. It’s too bad Coconino National Forest doesn’t rent the cabins out, like the C&O Canal does some of their old lockhouses. 😉👈

After enjoying eating lunch, I headed back across the creek, and started up decommissioned FR 95B. I jumped when a nearby dog barked. (The leashed dog, and its owner, were on the opposite side of a tree.) FR 95B was short, but steep. At the top, there was log-fenced pullout / trailhead on FR 139A. Disregarding 13 minutes of breaks, I made the 3¾ mile trip back to where I started in 1h 09m — an average speed of 3.27 mph.

Other flowers I spotted include skyrocket, pygmy bluet, yarrow, and a red cinquefoil that was much smaller than normal. I wonder how many species the flower survey gals found?

Kathy and I joined 9L and Chumley for West Cabin Loop. My longest hike so far after knee surgery so it was a good test. Didn't have any issues so that was good. Starting off we hiked near FR 300 through the forest over to the drop in for Bear Canyon. Then down Bear Canyon on some off trail with some decent pools along the way.

Eventually we exited the canyon and onto Houston Bros trail. Nice stretch of trail and we had lunch at Aspen Cabin and spring. Took a long break before continuing down trail to Pinchot Cabin.

After Pinchot we hiked through the washed out section of FR 95 which was interesting. What will be more interesting is if they ever fix it....it's a huge washout and looks like a ton of work. Leaving FR 95 we hopped on the Fred Haught trail briefly and then the AZT back to General Springs and our vehicle at FR 300.

We set out on a modified ccw west cabin loop that cut off a couple of miles by dropping into Bear Canyon for some offtrail things before climbing up and over into HouBros to complete the rest of it on trail.

I was surprised to find bear cyn to be dry, but that changed as we moved downstream. It was all water after the west junction, and flowing nicely after east joined in.

HouBros has seen some recent chainsaw clearing, and the winter snows put an extra nail in the coffin for the longevity of the barn at Aspen Spring. Good water flowing all along the draw with Pinchot truly gushing. But Aspen was chilly, with temps down well over 20 degrees from up above.

They're thinning along the ridge along the north end of FH, so it'll be interesting to see how that looks when they're done. The 95 washout has probably eroded a little bit more after the enhanced spring runoff this year. Curious if they'll ever fix it. Encountered a handful of others along the way, but generally a pleasant day in the woods.

Kudos to Kathy, who fought through the day far more than 17 miles on a surgically repaired knee!

Originally was gonna go camping but was too lazy, so I headed up to Washington Park to run a cabin loop with some friends. Probably have done this one at least a half dozen times, but it's always worth another go. Started at around 8:30 am hoping to get done before the storms hit, but wasn't confident in that.

I always like to get the Rim Rd section over with first; luckily with the recent rain it wasn't too dusty. Tried to follow the Gen Crook trail tread a couple of times, but it's spotty.

Everything is nice and green now, some of the small drainages on Houston Bros had water, but surprisingly there wasn't any more water at Aspen Spring or Pinchot Cabin than there was a month or so ago. Started hearing thunder at Bear Canyon or so, but the storms seemed to be moving in a favorable direction, and we managed to avoid them. Didn't get any rain until after we left the trailhead.

With the monsoon in an active pattern, I wanted to do this one early in the day and avoid any potential lightning so we drove up Friday night for a pleasant camp with jonnybackpack and the shed hunter. It rained for a few hours overnight and the morning was overcast and cool. We were on trail at 7. By 8 it started drizzling and lasted an hour or so, adding to the already vibrant greens from the recent rain.

Over the course of the day we spotted 16 or 18 elk in about 5 different encounters, plus two encounters with large and loud mammals that went unseen. I saw a big redtail near Aspen Spring too.

It was surprising how few people were up on the rim. All the big campsites were empty, and we didn't encounter a single hiker on the entire loop. A rarity for sure in summer here. Only twice did we hear the slight drone of a quad driving on an adjacent road, but that's also pretty impressive given the proximity this trail is to so many motor vehicle routes.

The sun came out around 11, but only lasted an hour before clouds began to build. We made it back to the truck before any rain hit, though the rim views revealed a few showers in the area.

While the cabin loop doesn't offer the euphoria of trudging the road that climbs Mt. Ord, it allows you to cover a bunch of miles over diverse landscape in a fairly short amount of time. Somehow this was my first hike on the rim since snow season, and it was nice to be back!

The rim was closed due to fire danger for the past month or so and finally reopened a few days prior. Monsoon kicked in strong and the area was saturated and fires were allowed. So Chumley and I got organized and drove up on Friday night. We arrived at FR300 on the west side and made the drive in with plans to car camp near the middle of the Cabin Loop where we would meet Jon & Matt. The drive in went well and it was eerie how few people we saw. We assumed most people were not ready for car camping after the forest was closed for so long. We continued in and eventually pulled in to our preplanned camp where we met Matt. Jon would join us an hour or two later. The rest of the night was spent enjoying a campfire and an adult beverage.

We started early on Saturday because the afternoon called for thunderstorms. We said goodbye to Jon & Matt and then drove over to the Barbershop TH. We started in and opted for a CCW loop. Along the way we saw a lot of Elk with several babies. They appeared startled by us. I guess they were getting use to no people with the closure. We made the loop and it went really well. Both of us have hiked portions of the Cabin Loop so I won’t go into details. I really enjoy this area and the hiking is very easy. We eventually completed our loop and packed up and headed back to Phoenix. It was a nice short getaway. Thanks Chumley for planning and driving.

We arrived at the trailhead that was off forest road 139a to Pinchot cabin. It was about 10 am in the morning when we started to hike. It was cloudy and at one point it looked like it was going to snow. It was around 40 degrees. It could have been colder. There was no one on the trail except my dad and I and it was a very quiet hike through the forest. We found the Aspen spring cabin just fine and I stayed around there for 10 to 15mins. We found kept finding remains of some animal around one area. We are assuming it is one animal since they were all in the same vicinity. We did find a piece of a jaw that we believe belongs to a bear but we could be wrong. We did hike up the trail pass aspen springs a couple of miles before heading back to the car.

After packing up and then imbibing in a most wonderful breakfast, we reluctantly left Camp Grasshopper to get in a quick hike before heading back to the Valley. This hike fit the bill perfectly and now I've seen and/or hiked around all the cabins of the Loop except Fred Haught.

This is truly a lovely hike as you hike past Pinchot Cabin and up the meadow of Houston Draw. The forest came in and out but the ferns were pretty much everywhere along the way. The trail is very nice and it doesn't look like it got recent rain, either that or it dries out real well. We came upon 3 gigantic ponderosas, one with a double trunk high in the sky so that was pretty cool.

Of course the Springs area is the highlight with what little remnants of what was once here scattered about. The tack shed/barn was pretty cool with its tin roof and corral. The fireplace stood out like a beautiful sore thumb and the water from the spring trickling out from under the rocks looked really refreshing. Of course, you have to cross the bridge which we did. It's a beautiful clearing here, a spectacular place for a campover.

Hiking back was fun as the light changed a bit with some intermittent cloud cover. Filming the light in and out of the forest is just too much for the camera to adjust to so I spent several hours this weekend learning how to tone that down in the video. I still have some work to do as I was able to adjust a lot of the sharp contrasts but now the video isn't as crisp or colorful as what we were seeing. But now of course, I'd like to go back and fix some of the other videos that I had to fight the contrast (especially the Kachina) but it just takes so much time to re-do; especially since I'm still behind on about 10 trips.

I did spot some tall larkspur/delphinium in amongst the ferns and then some butterflies on the yellow flowers. None of the pics of the butterflies turned out as I was zooming. We enjoyed the rest of our hike back to the road as I now joined back up with Kelly who got away from me as she was avoiding the flies. I, on the other hand, didn't have any issue with flies ;) . At the road there is a beautiful patch of lupine that had some paint brush scattered in it so it was a fitting way to end our hike.

Everyone is off doing other stuff and I really needed to do a backpack. I know I've done all the Cabin Loop trails a million times-- but I like those trails :D

Lily and I started from Washington Park to avoid the extra hour of driving plus the long stretch on 300. My old truck rather appreciates that preference. We made it up to the rim pretty quick. The Colonel Devin really is speedy access to the top. We got our lousy road walk over and powered through the 4 miles encountering very little traffic. We finally hit Houston Brothers.

The first pair we came across were doing the loop in the opposite direction starting at Pinchot. We would see them again the next morning. Then we came across a larger group camped in one of the drainages just south of the Barbershop intersection. They were part of a larger boyscout group. They were the ones who didn't make it as far but they didn't seem to mind :D

I had the idea of adding some off-trail stuff to the day. I'd drawn up a route to duck over into Merritt Draw and then Maverick Canyon and head back to Houston Draw. With the slight chance of rain and clouds coming in and out all morning and still having fresh memories of getting caught in that storm up there a few weeks ago, I decided just to head to camp. Also to be honest, we were ten miles in at that point and adding three miles of off-trail didn't sound very appealing.

We came across the rest of the boyscouts. They had camped at Pinchot and were on their way back to meet the other group. I think they were spending one more night out there-- really friendly kids. Finally we made it to Aspen Spring. Its one of my favorite camp spots.

I set up camp, made dinner, water, and all that normal camp stuff. According to the boyscouts, it had rained up there early that morning. It was a bit of a struggle getting a fire going and I had to sacrifice all of my frequent buyer cards and coffee stamp cards-- but I got that baby going  I went to bed pretty early to the sounds of coyote echoing through the draw. I don't know what they were up to, but it was loud and steady for some time.

I woke up to the beautiful sounds of elk singing-- just gorgeous set of pipes on those things  I spotted a few on the ridge right above us and they were just going to town. I took my time breaking down camp and we headed off. We didn't see anyone again until we hit the Fred Haught Trail. I saw the couple from the day before earlier than I thought I was going to. Then I met a couple other pairs that were camped and a couple sets of dayhikers. It was turning out to be a lovely day and pleasant hike out.

We finally hit General Springs. There were a lot of folks down there today. Four or five cars down at the cabin and then probably seven or eight up by 300. I spoke to a couple groups and headed back down the Colonel Devin. As soon as we began descending, the sun came out and the temperature jumped up unexpectedly. It was a little toasty and Lily immediately felt it. My thermometer was reading 96 on that first set of exposed switchbacks. I figured if I kept Lily moving, I could water her down in the pines where it would be a bit cooler and then there would be a few spots after where the water flows over the trail-- no big deal. Once we got out of the pines, the clouds rolled back in for a bit and the temperature dropped nicely but by the time we reached the trailhead things had warmed up again but we were done :)

I let Lily cool down and I was hungry so we headed up to the THAT Brewery for their delicious black bean burger and dog friendly patio. We headed back to Phoenix soon after. I'm pretty over these long summer drives with no A/C in my truck-- and I know Lily is too. I have a pretty good method of keeping her cool in the truck now which basically consists of dumping water on her every 30 minutes or so which is kind of annoying to both of us. Though if I'm consistent, she barely even pants on the drive

We were going to do Bruce and Kyle's loop, but after Kathy, full of grace, fell in immediately and was slow going down the canyon, the guys took a few miles off.
It's always fun to hike with Cupcake and Blanco, and Lee too!

Great hike in Bear Canyon with Lee and the dogs. We had been working on getting out there with the pups and Bear Canyon with all the water was perfect hike. Bruce did this hike recently and it looked like a winner especially for Cup...she loves the water! Bear Canyon is definitely the nicest of the rim canyons I've seen so far with some rocky cliffs and interesting pools to navigate.

After exploring Bear we linked up with Houston Brothers Trail which is cool in it's own right. Lunch was at Aspen Spring with large meadows and an old cabin site. We continued up Houston Brothers enjoying more meadows and tall ferns along the way before dropping back down into East Bear Canyon. Once in the bottom we followed it downstream back to where we hiked out at the Bear Canyon - East Bear Canyon confluence. On top it was short hike back to the vehicle and some beverages to finish off a great day of hiking :D

Kyle and I get together for what has become an annual trek up on the rim. We started from Washington Park on an overcast and rainy morning. We were prepared with rain gear and the forecast called for clear skies starting around 12pm. The first two miles up the Colonel Devin Trail were wet and muddy. Both of us had wet feet. We topped out on FR 300 and started our hike east on the road. The rain let up but a heavy fog moved in. This is a really easy stretch and took a bit over an hour to hike the four miles.

We hit the Houston Brothers Trail and headed north. The weather finally broke and the sun started shining through. We continued on and took our lunch at the Aspen Spring Cabin. We were about half way done at this point and the food really energized us. The rest of the day flew by as the miles blurred by. The going was very easy and we finished back at Kyle’s truck late afternoon.

This was a really fun hike and I look forward to our return next year. Thanks Kyle for driving!

Now that we've done this one 3 times, 9L and I are now considering this hike to be an annual ritual. The west Cabin Loop via Washington Park is great. Save on some driving time and add a nice climb up the Mogollon Rim at the start.

We got rained on pretty good early on. The weather said it should start clearing up around noon so we had some trust. The rain mostly stopped on our long walk up 300 to Houston Brothers. We shared dreams of being warmed by fresh beams of sun at our Aspen Springs lunch spot and our dreams came true. It turned out to be a rather gorgeous day and the rains had everything flowing.

I always love the Cabin Loop trails.

Introducing someone new to backpacking.

Wet weather allowed for a nice sized campfire. Fire danger in Payson was "low". First time I think I can ever claim to have observed that. Lots of dew on the ground in the morning, even though it didn't rain. Weather was perfect.

Kyle and I decided on this as an easy overnight with the pups. I've always enjoyed this area, and this trip was no different.

I brought my bike and rode the 4.5 miles along FR300 to save us from having to do that less interesting section on foot. I was surprised how green and wet everything is, especially with the early fire restrictions this year. It really is early season up there, with many aspen not yet showing their leaves, and the maples just getting started.

Last time I did this section was in a freak April snow storm a couple of years ago, so it was neat to remember how things looked that day. Saturday was just borderline warm in the sun, but Sunday cooled off and was perfect, with cloud cover, breezy, and in the 60s.

I always forget about the numerous little draws to cross on the southern half of Houston Brothers, it's such a different hike from the northern half.

We stopped at Baker Butte on the way out. Shirley has been there for 18 years, and it's been at least 7 since I carried an antique sewing machine up into the tower for her, and she has since acquired a horse. The tower has been upgraded and now has new windows and doors and an outdoor walkway around it.

The views were nice, but a little bit hazy today.

Out and back. Great temperature - mid 70's, a little humid but not too bad. Saw a coyote crossing highway 87. Along the trail we passed two groups of backpackers in the first 45 mins both heading out and then no one else. A couple of thunderstorms rolled by but missed us. Another great day :)

Just after you cross E Clear Creek on FR 95 there is a "Road Closed Ahead" sign - luckily I remembered Chumley's forum post: :thanx:

FR95 is closed at the junction with 139G (.25 miles before Houston Draw) and there are a couple of JJ's machines at Houston Draw.

1st trip
We invaded HAZ Camp at around 8:30, to find quite a few HAZers still Sleeping.
We were greeted by Angela, Pam, Trish, Cindy, Corry, OregonHiker, (all of whom I was meeting for the first time)....and rolling out of the Coleman Mansion with Chinese eyes, Todd.

Corry decided he wanted to tag along for the tour of the East loop, so we were off.

This is a pleasant hike with Pines, Oak, Maple, Aspens, Ferns. Our Clockwise loop took us past numerous springs and cabins in various states of disrepair. My favorite areas on the hike were the Barbershop spring area, the Fern Forests on the Houston Brothers Trail, Barbershop canyon, and the cold, refreshing water of Dane Spring.

On the way up to Pinchot Cabin, we ran into Chumley, Liz, and Oregonhiker. A little later we ran into Laura hiking Solo and then later again, south of Dane Spring, Steve (Nonot).

I stopped back at camp to wet my liver (Thanks Liz!)for a short while and jab with the folks. I was even allowed to view, touch, and sample Angela's Treasure chest of snacks!

Good to meet all the new people and catch up with the others I have not seen in awhile.

Good Hiking with you Corry... keep up the good work!.
JBM was at an all time low. Approaching 0 (and actually going positive for a short while) at the beginning of the hike.
