Didn't have anything exciting planned, so I decided to finally get to the top of Wasson Peak. Started from the end of El Camino del Cerro (which a friend later told me has had a lot of break-ins, but that didn't happen). Early on, I saw a crested saguaro; this one is probably hard to miss. Not a whole lot of people on Sweetwater Trail.

Once at the saddle, the crowds started appearing. Nice steady climb with good views - I liked how the trail from the saddle to the peak is constructed for the most part.

Felt pretty rough because I'm out of shape, but the summit was nice and cool. Hung out for 5 minutes or so. Felt good enough to jog most of the way down the mountain.

I'd definitely like to go back and do the loop via King Canyon and Hugh Norris.

Calibration for Sweetwater workout
20 minutes better than a 15 months ago.
10 minutes better than my previous best.
Not saying a lot, being I haven't done this precise workout very many times.
Getting hot.

Temps in the upper 60's to start and pretty pleasant up until the last 15-20 minutes. Up to Wasson and then down Sendero Esperanza to pick up a few extra miles and AEG. Back up S-E and came back down Sweetwater and back to the car.

Either they are patrolling the area better or the guys doing smash & grabs have moved on to greener pastures. Didn't see any evidence of broken glass from a car window anywhere in the parking lot.

Trying to beat back jetlag. Feeling like a zombie on crack.

On trail well before sunrise, but still pretty warm out. The crack-headed half of me saw a snake. Wonder how many I stepped on with the zombie half in charge. Very few people out, but I was done by 0830 on a Sunday.

Wow, lousy pace for this one. Must have taken a nap in there somewhere.

Joined 9L and Chumley for figure 8 loop of Wasson Peak. Great weather on the day with awesome trail starting from the Hugh Norris trailhead on the west side. Few miles into the hike we turned on to Sendaro Esperanza Trail over to the Mam-a-Gah area that had some glyphs in the wash where we checked those out and took a break.

After the break we continued on King Canyon Trail over the Sweetwater Trail and eventually to Wasson Peak summit. Had lunch on the summit with a few other people. Not overly crowded but people were definitely out on the trail. Lunch done we dropped off the top on Hugh Norris Trail again heading down the west side. Did a quick side hike over Amole Peak which was only about 150 feet or so above the trail.

Finishing up the figure 8 we jumped back on Sendaro Esperanza over to the Adobe Wash Trail. We followed that until it hits the road and then connected with Bajada Wash Trail that we hiked on back to the trailhead. Nice to hike some new trails since I'd only previously done Wasson Peak on Sweetwater Trail. Definitely enjoyed the west side trails more than the rest!

Other than a couple of quick trips up flatriron and pie, it occured to me that I haven't hiked on an actual trail since November, other than snowshoeing. Since I'd never hiked Wasson before, it's been on my "sometime whenever it makes sense" list and it seemed to be a good option today.

Hugh Norris was officially annoying in it's insane NPS construction. A million unnecessary steps made what would be a pleasant desert hike into an unbelievable stairmaster of pumpkin. Somebody was bored. For years.

Eventually we got past the overzealous granite stepmaster and enjoyed the day on the mountain. John pointed out some rock art he knew about from a previous trip. The west side is more scenic. The old road grades are less exciting. We took a break on the summit and a few others were there, but not overwhelming. It is a national park, after all.

On the way down, we took a quick detour to Amole Peak. There's a register there, which despite being a named peak, is a bit surprising because it has no elevation or prominence or whatever it is that people typically want to put their name in a jar for.

The lower stretches hit some typically annoying SNPW wash walking and the temps got a bit warmer than preferred. Bajada parallels the park road, and the less-adventurous among the group bailed to check out the rental-car crowd, while the rest of us finished in the wash. We did encounter a very active bee hive in the wash and were quite pleased to pass by without incident.

Good peak, good loop, good weather, good company. Would do again. :)

Sweetwater - Hugh Norris Switchbacks

Dropped Scruff at the vet and was on the trail just before 8

I had the trail mostly to myself, aside from the trail runner that I kept passing (setting up his video clips). In fact when I passed him the last time he was still a quarter mile short of the crest while I was 15 minutes into my return trip - Sort of a tortoise & the hare situation.

It became uncomfortably warm and increasingly busy in the final couple of miles, but they went by fast.

Grabbed the furball on the way home and got on with life.

Wasson Peak. Earned a little extra credit going down and back up the Hugh Norris switchbacks.

I needed to get a hike in today, but had a wedding to attend last night, so I was a bit worried that this one might not happen and that I wouldn't get to hike all this coming week.

Anywho, I decided to set the old school alarm, you know, the kind that doesn't have a snooze or anything? For me that = feeding the cat 2 cans of food at 2300 sharp, then hitting the rack. The process is perfect - I saw logs while the kitty's digestive tract works with all the precision of a 1960s, Swiss timepiece, guaranteeing that I'm out of bed, semi-coherent and opening the front door at 0600. From that point, a shower, some coffee, and a little me time makes for a good start.

I finally hit GO at 0830 - a little late, but feeling pretty good for having been up so late. I didn't think I'd set any records today, hence the bit of extra credit added on, but turned out that I was just a fraction behind my target pace overall.

Light on humans for a Saturday. A lot of man-buns and black, ninja outfits on the trails lately - about 6 or 7 this week that I recall. Is there a new movie out that I should be aware of?

Sunny & still, but pleasant with temps from 55 - 74.
No foot issues today.
Carried 3 liters, used about 1.

*** Used Turbine dilator first time

Today's goal was to find the Wasson Reference Mark 2 and the Wasson Azimuth Mark that I previously was unaware of when I last hiked Wasson Peak via the Sweetwater Trail on December 13, 2020 and to start getting outside now that it is finally getting cooler.

My plan was to hike up the King Canyon Trail up to the summit of Wasson Peak. Then I would head back down the Hugh Norris Trail to the Sendero Esperanza Trail. I would take the Sendero Esperanza Trail down to the King Canyon Wash Trail and take that down to the trailhead.

I wanted to start at about 8:30 am but I actually started at 9:12 am. I signed the register at the trail head and continued onward on the trail. The trail started out as a gravely sort of surface with rocks almost like shale, just smaller. There was a gradual elevation gain until I dropped back down into the wash. At the junction with the King Canyon Trail and the King Canyon Wash Trail, the trail became narrower as the service track that goes up the saddle turns away from the trail. The trail became a much better surface of compacted dirt after I exited the wash. The trail was about two times as steep as the beginning part of the trail. Quickly, I moved along the trail and made it to the saddle. It was so amazing to see the amazing views that Wasson Peak offered from here, with the Santa Catalina Mountains peaking out northeastward, and the mountain ranges west of the Tucson Mountains visible from the southwest. From here, I followed the trail up the switchbacks that lead up to the peak. With every switchback, the views just got better and better. It was really amazing. I saw some Nama hispidum flowers sparsely along the switchbacks. I saw the vandalized trail sign at the junction of the Hugh Norris Trail and the King Canyon Trail that I remembered from last year and continued on to the Wasson azimuth mark. According to the United States Costal and Geodetic Survey in 1935, the azimuth mark was on a small ridge on the southeast side of the trail, 250 yards 237.49524° from the benchmark that was on the summit. I had already figured out an approximate location of the mark based on these values using Google Earth. Approaching the approximate location of the mark, I recognized the ridge of where the mark was supposed to be from Google Street View I had looked at the day before. I set down my pack and hiking poles and started looking. After only a minute of searching, I was happy to the dark yet still metallic disk on the ridge, behind a shrub. The disk was in amazing condition for being 86 years old. Typically, you would see a couple scratches going across the disk but this was basically brand new it seemed like. You can see that there is ware on the disk but no noticeable scratches. I'm assuming this is because 59 years ago was the last recorded attempt I could find of someone finding the azimuth. The approximate location that I determined after finding the mark is at 32.272106, -111.149222
. I continued on from here to the summit. I signed the summit register at 10:36 am. There were two parties on the summit of the peak. I was hoping for an empty summit but I would have needed to be earlier I suppose. I located reference mark 2 northwest of the summit. It is the oldest benchmark I have ever found, being monumented in 1919 making it 102 years old. It had plenty of scratches on it as expected. Looking around at the panoramic views the peak offered, I recalled upon many different hikes that I have done in the surrounding mountains. I especially recognized my Safford Peak hike. I should have stayed on the peak but I wasn't super comfortable with all of the people on the peak. I headed down to the Hugh Norris Trail junction again and I turned down onto it. The trail opened up to have a view of the west. From here I went down the switchbacks of the trail which had a sort of compacted surface. This trail was definitely a less popular trail than the King Canyon Trail or the Sweetwater Trail. After the trail leveled out, the surface became a sort of soft dirt/sand/gravel layer. This was the perfect hiking surface of a trail. After not a while though, the trail started to have granite slab steps. The surface of the trail quickly turned into a ton of these granite slab steps with a layer of super compacted dirt on top of them making for the worst trail surface to walk on. It felt like I had fallen a short distance with every step in stead of walking. This continued until the junction with the Sendero Esperanza Trail. I turned onto the trail and appreciated the new surface of the trail, compacted dirt. I headed down the trail and noticed a debris heap down in the canyon. USGS Topo maps showed a building where it was but I couldn't see. Soon enough, I came across the Gould Mine entrance. It was pretty cool. There was a metal grate over the vertical hole in the ground with a barbed wire fence around that. Just beyond the mine there was a building placed where rock was blasted away, as the back wall was a flat wall of rock. I knew the end of my hike was near, just over the ridge that lay ahead of me. I got to the Mam-A-Gah Picnic Area. I sat down at one of the picnic tables and ate the peanut butter and jelly I had packed. With the trailhead in sight, I went down to the King Canyon Wash Trail. After only about 100 feet, I arrived to water in the wash coming right out of the ground. This might have been the second best part of the hike, asides from the views and benchmarks. I can't image why it is here. It might have sprinkled a tiny bit on Wednesday (11/24/2021) but that's all I can think of. There were also petroglyphs on both sides of the canyon from where the water popped up. Continuing down the canyon you walk on the wash with a surface of gravel with small rock dropoffs every so often with water popping out of the ground underneath them. This was so cool and having to maneuver down the small dropoffs is fun. I also found a stagnant pool of water with tadpoles in it. It was a little oasis for some of the small animals and insects of the desert. One thing to note along the trail: There is a section where there is a 6 foot+ dropoff. There is a trail that goes around this on the east side of the wash. After a hike through the gravely surface of the wash a trail to the left emerged and the trailhead showed itself.

Today's hike was a lot of fun and seeing water was also a bonus. :D :D :D

Got an early 0630 start from the King Canyon Trail Head. Trying to beat the heat up to Wasson Peak. Accomplished this with the help of a sporadic light cloud cover. All the trails are in excellent condition and this made the continuous climb to the peak a lot easier. Saw 3 people at the peak ahead of us and about a half dozen coming up as we were heading down. Stopped and checked out the mine just before hitting the saddle below Wasson Peak on the Sweetwater Trail. Cool but nothing real exciting, It's only 10 yards off the trail and a scoot under a barbed wire fence. The actual mine entrance is blocked off so you cant go in more than a couple yards. I really like the early morning views from on top the peak particularly Panther and Sombrero to the north.

Headed down the Hugh Norris Trail to the Sendero Esperanza Trail. Really nice trail, they put a lot of work on this trail, not rocky like the King Canyon and Sweetwater Trail. Sections of this trail are through decomposed granite that makes for fine trails. Lots of really fat saguaros along this trail, they must like the decomposed granite also. If you like dragging out the climb to Wasson Peak this is probably the way to go, I like to get it over with so King Canyon is for me and do the downhill on a more gradual trail. Once at the Sendero Esperanza Trail we headed south toward the Gould Mine and the Gould Mine Trail back to our start point.

Flowers on the ocotillo and hedgehog and a few poppies, not a great year for flowers. We finished the hike at about 1100 and headed across the street to the desert Museum for our 1130 scheduled visit time. Not the best time to visit with afternoon temps in the low 90's but Ginny has never been and we were in the area. Lots of flowers blooming in the Museum though. Congrats to Ginny on her first hike where the destination was a peak.
