Some days you need a hike, today was that day. Started at 5:00 PM and was amazed at how few cars where in the parking lot. I actually thought the trail might be closed. Temperature wise, it was probably one of the nicest days in months. I have been doing a lot of shorter hikes and decided to a longer one today. I guess my cardio is doing better as I was able to get to the top with just one short break. Im my opinion this is probably the best hike in Valley of the Sun!

Nice little Saturday in the MSP. Up Bell Pass and down the Fountain Hills side. Great views of the snow covered Four Peaks. Hit the Windgate Trail junction but kept going up East End trail. Only ran into a few people on the backside.

Once we made the Toms Thumb junction it was the usual weekend crowd. Good thing is it lasts less than a mile until the turn off for Toms Thumb. Then it was back to solitude with nobody on trail until reaching Gateway. Made it back just before dark.

Good sunny day for a hike. Did this trail last year and decided to do it again. There were a few people out but it wasn't really crowded. Once we got to the top we headed to the Lookout where we took a break for lunch. Felt good and strong despite having not hiked in a few weeks. Last year the Lookout was crowded, but this time we had the place to ourselves which was great. Enjoyed the panoramic views even though it was pretty hazy from strong winds the day before. Ate a peaceful lunch, then headed back towards the main trail. We passed several groups of people heading to the Lookout, so we timed it perfectly. Very glad we didn't get to the Lookout a little later because it would have been a crowd again.

East End trail wasn't bad. My first time on that trail I was slipping and sliding on loose rocks the whole way, but this time it was much better. That climb up to Bell Pass was challenging. Had to rest and recover at the top.

Once again a very enjoyable hike.

Hiking with the Harem this morning (Carey and Dan) in McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Apparently, if you hike up to the Thumb on a Sunday, you get to meet Jack, who has a great history lesson on the Thumb. Lots of people on the trail, many with dogs.

Did this loop a few years back and decided to take the wife this go around. Surprisingly sparse crowds at the TH this time of year, when we arrived around 7:30 am. Once out of the initial TH area, we enjoyed quite a bit of solitude all the way up to Tom's Thumb, and then again, once we began heading down East End trail.

Instead of cutting back through Windgate Pass for the lasso loop, we continued on to Bell Pass instead.

Best part of the loop, IMO, is the last couple of miles climbing up to Tom's Thumb from the West side. The first and final couple of miles near the TH are kind of blase.

I really wish they would put in more trails to the peaks/summits in the McDowells, as well as a west side approach to Thompson peak so you could do it as a loop.

For some reason, when hiking out here, I feel like the place is managed by star-bellied sneetches.

Keeping up with the Joneses. Counterclockwise. Beautiful day for a hike. Didn't see many hikers until the last couple miles, then quite a few. Thanks Kelly! :)

With the temps finally getting decent, I did my first hike in the valley since April. It was in the low 60s when we started at 6:30 a.m. and warmed up to the low 80s by noon.

We were in search of fall colors. Scratch that, we were in the McDowells

We arrived to a mostly empty parking lot and hit the trail. We took the loop clockwise and made the climb to Tom's Thumb, staying in the shade about 95% of the time.

Linda mentioned she needed to meet some of her relatives up top, so I showed her the Ogre's Den.

On the way down, she pointed out a hawk perched on top of a cactus that neither of us could identify. I'm sure the photos will be blurry, but it looked like a cross between a hawk and a seagull or maybe an albino hawk. There was a lot of white on it.

The east side of the Bell Pass Trail went smoothly in the full sun with an occasional breeze.

We took a short break at the top, then mostly coasted downhill to finish.

As we were finishing, I was able to provide a lady starting her hike with some helpful information. She was looking for some loop information and what to do if she saw a snake.

It got a little warm but nothing too crazy. It was great hiking with Linda again.

We didn’t have coffee after the hike.

Let the valley hiking season begin!

dry Mountain Spring Dry Dry
Dry where it crosses the trail. I wonder if the pipe broke further up, or if it just dried up. It used to be quite reliable.

After tossing around a few different options, we settled on an always good loop in the McDowells. Met Bruce at the Gateway Trailhead at 0630, and we made our way over towards Windgate and Tom’s Thumb trails. Nice temps to start, and shade nearly the entire way up the Tom’s Thumb trail, which was very much appreciated.

Once finally in the sun, we were heading downhill, so I kept my complaining to a minimum. Bruce showed me his backup home for when he gets kicked out of his house. The descent down East End went quickly.

I whined a lot climbing up to Bell Pass, but Bruce brought his cattle prod along and kept me mostly moving uphill. Quick break at the pass to enjoy the breeze, then an easy (but warm) walk the rest of the way back to the trailhead. Some interesting people watching, and Bruce gave a creative rattlesnake tutorial to one novice hiker. Good workout hike, and good to hike with Bruce again.

No nutrition waist channels were signed into the summit register for 05-May,'18, so the Linked trail guide one did for that day is a lie. It would be fun to research how many more they've embellished. :-s I digress, but at 5:41am the mindless greyhounds all crushed onto the Gateway Loop Trail, so I chose the more mellow Desert Park start. The rat race was avoided because none of them were seen again for the rest of my hike and double T solo. The East End ascent was hot and humid, then some nice breezes and cloud cover helped immensely. I need to remember that the Tom's Thumb TH doesn't have water because two liters was slightly inadequate.

My usual Tom's Thumb exercise hike out-and-back from the north trailhead to Tom's Thumb. Beat my best time ever since I started doing this hike 13 years ago. I'd like to think this result shows I'm in better shape than I was back then. :rollH: But the truth is that the secrets to my best time ever were 1. Never stop to chat with other hikers. 2. Never stop to take photos and 3. Hike at a pace that allowed me to hike the entire distance without stopping to catch my breath.

There were a few more patches of New Mexican Golden Poppies than when I did this hike 4 days ago.

Decided to get away from Somo for a change. Started from the Gateway trailhead just before sunrise. Hiked up to the crest a bit west of Tom's Thumb. Stopped to check out the glyphs by Mountain Spring on the way back.
Wildflowers are decent. Best showing on Windgate Pass trail between Gateway Loop and Tom's Thumb trail.
Only saw three people on the way up, but about 253 on the way back. Most near the trailhead. Lots of spring break families out enjoying the fabulous weather. :)

This was just an out-and-back to Tom's Thumb from the north side trailhead to see if the wildflowers were on display yet - they weren't, except for a couple small patches of poppies. Not like on my March 14, 2019 hike: [ photo ] Oh well, the boulder formations are always a treat and there were lots of people to chat with.

I wanted to avoid the official Maricopa Trail route, as I’d hiked all the component trails before, some multiple times. The official route is a 1,300 ft. climb to Windgate Pass, then miles of boring flats. Instead, I hiked the Tom’s Thumb Trail alternate, whose elevation gain is one long, steady, climb. After today, I consider myself to have done the full official Maricopa Trail route, even if not all at once. 😇

Gateway Loop Trail and Windgate Pass Trail were mostly in shade due to overcast, and the shadow cast by McDowell Peak. It was quite chilly.

At least in winter, the main attraction is the many saguaro. It is not the slowly encroaching mega mansions of Silverleaf — including Arizona’s most expensive home, "Altitude".

At the 2¾ mile mark, I turned left off the official Maricopa Trail, onto Tom’s Thumb Trail. It's a steady climb near the canyon bottom until TT 11, at the 4¼ mile mark. There, the trail gets much steeper, switchbacking many times over the course of the next mile.

Not many people, though one couple passed me going up & down. 😆

I ate lunch at TT9. (A to-go BLT from The Breakfast Joynt on Bell & Thompson Peak.)

On either side of the trail's high point (3,795 ft.), it was a bit muddy, and there were small patches of icey snow.

Past the junction with East End Trail, Tom’s Thumb Trail passes through a boulder field full of rock climbing locations such as “Glass Dome”, it begins descending in earnest, 900 ft. in just over a mile to Gateway Trailhead. From Tom’s Thumb on down, it is quite crowded.

I’ve now completed 210.85 miles of Maricopa Trail. Three more segments to go!

Cardio, cardio, cardio. Steep sunset hike with my buddy, Tom, ironically at Tom's Thumb.

This was my first time at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and wow have I been missing out! The rocks were interesting, the trail and TH were pristine along with the views. It was busy but the crowds cleared out by the time the sun was setting.

I free climbed up a little bit of the thumb on the SW side. Truly a harrowing experience down climbing afterwards, but that's the price you pay for the fun of going up.
