I had never even looked at this one, apparently part of my unintentional superstitious blind spot. It had been on John's list and upon discussing the phenomenal late-April weather, we decided to make this one the goal on what is nearly certain to be the last tolerable Stits hike of the season.

We opted to do the reverse of what we continually referred to as the @jacobemerick route. We deviated from his route a bit, probably because the view looking up presented some different looking options than he had on the descent. Regardless, this was a really enjoyable route to the summit with minimal obstacles, only a couple of moderately steep climbs, and easily avoided catclaw.

It was about 2.5 miles and 1500 feet from our crossing of Tortilla Creek until reaching the northern reaches of the Tortilla Mountain ridgeline. From there it was another mile and 500 feet more to reach the distinct summit, with a couple of added highlights along the way.

After not stopping for so much as a sip of water on the 3 hour ascent, we spent a solid break enjoying the views at the top, which extended from the Galiuros to the Catalinas, White Tanks, Bradshaws, Pine Mountain, the Mazzies from Lion to Sheep, Ord and Browns, and the Ancha — the latter four caked in spring snow. Poofy clouds lingered from yesterday's storm and enhanced the views and photos.

After adding our names to the summit register, we opted to descend via the official route as posted on HAZ, which is a pretty miserable option. It would certainly be a better climb than descent, but the Emerick route was so much more pleasant, I'm not sure I would ever do this route again! The only benefit was that you do eventually reach the maintained Peter's Trail, so it's only 1.5 miles of off-trail. But the 1500 feet of elevation is highly concentrated on the upper half of the mileage and is replete with loose scree, prickly flora, and no particularly intuitive or pleasant-looking route. Doable? Sure. Enjoyable? Not so much.

Once on Peter's we made quick time out to the trailhead where we opted for the scenic return along the cliffs above Fish Creek Canyon. (I refuse to accept that a mountain or mesa can be named "fish" lol). This stretch is a favorite alternative to walking the 213 and with the perfect weather, did not disappoint.

Temps hovered in the low 60s most of the day, topping out at 67 as we finished up and the afternoon sun made a more steady appearance. Often enough the clouds and cool breeze resulted in being borderline chilly. Not a bad thing for this time of year!

This turned out to be a really enjoyable loop. Lots of variety, perfect weather, and top notch views. The official route? Yeah, find a different way! Lol.

We pulled together a plan late on Friday evening, with a fantastic weather forecast for Saturday. I'd had Tortilla on my list for a few years and threw that out as an option...exactly the smooth, on-trail hike chumley was looking for :). After overnight rain, some of the low peaks were still in clouds on the drive and early in the hike. No other vehicles in the parking lot, and it was in the low 50s as we started up FR 213.

We had a few route options loaded and decided on the loop, leaving the road after less than 1.5 miles to start the climb. We loosely followed the 2017 @jacobemerick route up a ridge, past some alcoves, then down into a drainage with quite a few bedrock pools. From there, we checked out a concrete dam, then resumed the climb up to the ridgeline that would take us south to the peak, and the views of the western Supes opened up nicely.

We opted to go up and over the top of the rock outcroppings on the ridgeline to avoid side-hilling through brush. That worked out well, though we did hit one spot that started to get sketchy, but a short backtrack revealed a chute with a much easier bypass. We detoured over to a window in the rock outcropping a little north of the summit--cool geology and formations in that area, then over to the summit with a straightforward scramble up the NE side.

We had cloud cover and cool temps on top, and the 360° views from the peak were fantastic. Many, many Superstition, Mazzy, Goldfield, and other distant landmarks visible. We took a long break up there and enjoyed our first food/water of the hike, then signed the register before starting down.

[ youtube video ]

We dropped down the south side of the summit block, which was mostly vertical and included some unfortunately placed catclaw and various pokey things to keep it extra interesting, but it worked out. We considered a few route options and decided to descend the drainage on the official route. Very steep and loose toward the top, but it was manageable, and distance-wise, it wasn't too long before we were back on Peter's Trail, which had been recently cleared.

Rather than walking 213 back to the parking lot, we hiked up to Fish Mesa and enjoyed the incredible views overlooking the creek. Past the benchmark, we took a relaxing break in the shade of the lone juniper before following the mesa edge north. By that time, the clouds had finally cleared off Four Peaks. Looping back to the road required crossing two drainages--one smaller, then down into a deeper creek bed, navigating a series of layered-rock levels. On the far side, we picked up a ridiculously over-cairned trail that connected to the road to finish it off.

Fun day all around--comfortable temps that stayed under 70° all day, nice clouds, great peak with scenic views, no new holes in the shorts, more flowers than I've seen on any other hike this year, plus we found some small ruins. Absolute gem of an April day, and I'm glad I suggested Tortilla and it worked out--the day exceeded high expectations.

It was necessary to modify a route up to Tortilla Mountain because I didn't account for most of the creeks in the area essentially being rivers. Which was fine because sometimes exploring off the beaten path leads to interesting discoveries. TM most definitely is a nice Supes summit, considering it's the highest point for miles around with great views, especially snowy Four Peaks. I descended a more inspiring route (I think jacobemerick's Jan.'17 track) than the official route and then integrated the crappy Rippin' and the Tearin' Horse Basin crossover and some of Fish Mesa into a CCW loop. Unfortunately, I forgot to run-up Hoolie Bacon to Peak 4143. I'll admit that HB is somewhat growing on me, since for once its banality was muted by the sound of rapids. Water reports seem superfluous currently because moisture is seeping from every crevice, side drainage and flowing down the muddy trails. And there's another storm forecasted, so it should be a good wildflower season again.

I have been wanting to hike to Tortilla Mountain and the stars were aligned yesterday to do so!

My stock vehicle did not have enough clearance to make it past the trailhead on FR 213, so we walked the road instead. Once to Tortilla Well, we took the Peters Trail for about 1.3 miles to Indian Spring, where we went off-trail to Tortilla Mountain.

The road walk was pretty easy, although it was a bit rocky in places. On the way out, I lost Peters Trail while going through a wash and stayed in the wash longer than I would have liked. On the way back I managed to stay on Peters Trail the whole way, which worked out better. I thought that the tread on Peters Trail was good, and even though the trail was a tad overgrown in places I enjoyed hiking on it.

On the off-trail portion, we made our way to a drainage that first went west and then northwest toward Tortilla Mountain. I wound up getting out of the drainage and went southwest up toward a ridge, and then had to traverse to tne northwest to meet up to the drainage on the way to a saddle. Once out of the drainage the slopes were steep, brushy, and a bit loose; this made for some slow hiking.

Once up to the saddle above the drainage, the heavy lifting had been done -- it was relatively flat hiking over to the summit block. The south side of the summit block has some intimidating looking cliffs and I could tell that we still had some work to do. We made our to the northeast side of the summit block, where there was a nice break in the cliffs which made for a fairly easy class 2 scramble to the top. Views are great at the top and are some of the best in the Supes imho.

On the way back, I started going north down from the summit block, but didn't like the looks of it so I backtracked and went back down the same way that I came up.

Once back to the saddle, we made a very steep descent to the drainage, and followed the drainage back down. There were several dryfalls that required some short class 3 moves to navigate -- I made good use of the five point-of-contact technique a few times!

If I was to do the hike again, I would both ascend and descend through the drainage rather than doing what I did on the ascent.

In spite of the steep, brushy slopes I enjoyed the hike. I thought that the views were great at the summit and along the way -- the geology is nice in this area. Plus, it was a fun scramble up to the summit. On the way back, I was very happy to get back to the Peters Trail!

Had originally planned on Black Mountain but switched on a whim. Started around 7:30 and went counterclockwise starting with Tortilla Mountain.

Road walk for a mile up 213 before a couple guys in an off-roader offered me a ride to the trailhead. Declined, and changed my mind about going all the way down the road. Had a look at the grassy ridgelines to the west toward Tortilla Mountain and decided to cut corners on the loop and go for that summit instead. Left the road and went down to the creek and then up. It's steep, but there's no bushwhacking on the slopes and ridges, only crossing the two drainages.

Eventually made my way to the Tortilla Peak Ridgeline and the fun started. Good scrambling and some sense of exposure, particularly where the ridgeline is broken north of the peak. Distant views. Very poor man's Brown's - Brother traverse. Best part of the hike. Summit is up high off the ridgeline something like Cathedral Rock in the Catalinas, only no rope or reason to have one.

Have a hard time enjoying a summit not knowing how I'll get down. Did no research in advance, and on the maps the west side of the peak looks less cliffy. Didn't stay long before heading to the little subpeak to the south and working my way down. Cliffed out a few times, and I had to head farther south than planned, toward the drainage that cuts E/W across Tortilla Mountain. Ended up hopping down the creek to Peter's Canyon and found the trail.

Peter's trail toward Black Mountain and thought what's the point in doing that. Looks like more of an achievement from Charlebois. Saw the only people of the day on Peter's trail. They were running from Canyon Lake and had dropped a car at Tortilla TH. Had a brief chat during which they explained they knew which car was mine at the TH and mentioned I should go to Herman's Cave. Didn't end up going, sorry guys. Thanks for not keying my car.

Dutchman, Red Tanks, Hoolie Bacon. Only water I remember was at Larbarge Spring, in La Barge Creek by Whiskey Spring Canyon, and in the Box.

Tracked close to 8 miles, by going up Peter's Canyon to the saddle, and took off the off trail! Brutal catclaw and slow moving. But it was so worth it, the views at the top were some of the absolute best in the Superstitions.

We decided to try attempting a creek hike down, following the brush. Was no better the trail up to it. Met up with Tortilla creek and followed it to the Peters Canyon trail again.

Fortunately have a good 4WD to get us to the TH too! First people to sign log book since Jacob in 2017. Surreal.

Kicked off 2016 by climbing up Malapais, only makes sense to start this year by hiking it's brother from a different mother.

Started at TH the same time as some hunters and they offered a ride down 213, which was most awesome. The driver mentioned that he did some trail maintenance on Peter's Trail over the last few months, and sure enough, Peter's Trail was in great shape. Seemed chilly out, though I didn't see a lot of frost. Creeks were running good. Found Kane Spring. Now, on to the exciting stuff.

Cutting off Peter's Saddle toward the peak was tough. The ground is pretty crumbly and, since I chose to circle around a little hill, I wasn't able to plan more than a few dozen yards in front of me at a time. Lots and lots of brush to deal with. Seemed to take forever to reach the first saddle past Peter's. Along the way I thought I saw a hint of a trail and two cairns, wasn't able to pick out anything else from here though, so I'm going with tricksy bighorns. Following the ridge wasn't that bad, soft ground but relatively clear. Saw two good routes up the ridge, chose the second one which turned out to be Joe's route (at least I think so, there was a tree assist). Once I got on top of the ridge I took my time, avoiding the tippy-top, and thus avoided the inevitable cliff-outs. Past the ridge there was a solid brushy climb, then some harder rock and sporadic brush, then the final (and surprisingly difficult) last few yards to the very peak. I like it when a peak is a real peak. Malapais just felt like rolling hills up there, and no one knows what Bluff Springs is up to.

Peak log was pretty empty. After the searches for Jesse in 2012 there were a few groups in 2013, 2014, no one in 2015, and a sizeable group in Jan 2016. And that's it. I signed it, thought about looking around for plane parts (totally forgot about them on the way up, peak log reminded me), decided to lounge and eat some crackers instead, and then headed down for a northern exit.

Northern route was peaches and cream compared to the south. For a while, anyways. It was flat and easy sailing for a time, and then there was a twenty foot drop and things got all boulder-y and overgrown. Spent most of the time dancing along the eastern slope below the ridge, might have been easier to top off. Super slow going until reached the saddle between 4622 and 4484. Climbing out of the saddle was easy, skipping on them flat red boulders, and made semi-good time to 4581. Not much to see here, just awesome views back at Tortilla Peak. The drop down 4581 to the north was easy at first, then got harder and harder as I got closer to the creek that would (mostly) take me out. So much bloody catclaw. Once I reached the base of that creek the catclaw went from knee-high to over-my-head, so that was neat. Eventually it was worth it. Found what I was looking for, an old dam on the little creek, though there wasn't any clues as to it's use. Something something ranching, probably. Or maybe LDM. Let's go with LDM. Followed tanks for a bit, and when creek got bush I pulled up the northern bank, rounded a saddle, and then had a fun 500' descent with a few cliff-outs and even more thick vegetation before finally finding the road. Got back to PHX shortly after three, perfect timing to get some final weekend stuff before it's not-weekend again.

Wally drove(thx) and Denny was responsible(thx). Good to meet Mike. Bob's singing needs work after a summer hiatus from the band.

Finally bagged Tortilla. Amazed I could see the skyscrapers in downtown Phoenix from the peak. The approach had Mother Lode moments and the descent was canyoneering. catclaw is definitely out there yet avoidable for the most part. Denny was in the holiday spirit and gave blood.

The ride on FR213 was an adventure. We kept the windows up so no one bounced out. Peters trail is better than the last time we were here. There is a little catclaw but the vines have died and the trail was easy to follow. We hiked up to the saddle above Kane Spring and tried a new route. While Joe found a way up on the ridge the rest of us didn't notice right away. We hiked on planning to meet him but ended up going up the long way so Joe waited an hour on the peak. The scenic route was rough but new territory is always fun. If you hike with me off trail my navigating skills are more Columbo than Columbus so it's always an adventure. The views from the peak are awesome but there's a price to get there. We hiked down Indian Spring Canyon but there is some route finding to be done or you could easily cliff out. On the drive out people hiking FR213 just looked at us and shook their heads and smiled. Maybe Denny, Bob and Mike were making faces in the back? Thanks to all who dared to take the experimental journey.

I hiked with three guys on the way up and a forth guy joined us on the way down. Twas an awesome hike. The spider in the summit register trick never gets old :) . It was a little warmer than I thought it would be but all in all it wasn't too bad. The drive out was pretty funny with hikers mocking us. Wally never told any Denny stories while driving..wipeing sweat off emoticon. :)

I wanted to do a simple (ya right) hike on the Tortilla ridgeline to look for any clues for Jesse Capen. What good is any crazy off trail adventure without Denny the menace. We decided to drive FR213 this time as it is always a treat and started hiking Peters trail about 7:12a. I noticed the moon almost lined up with the arch on the trail so of course we bushwacked around trying to get it to line up but no luck. Once we were at Indian Spring Canyon we started toward the saddle. Then since Denny never saw Indian Spring #2 we took a slight detour. I know focus on the task. We were off again hiking on the south slope of Indian Canyon and it got thick so we crossed over to the north. Then there was this alcove  that looked like it may be a cave and so I crawled in a ways. Why are we here? Oh ya. For some reason it seemed the ridgeline wasn't getting any closer. Finally near the top the canyon opened up, the terrain was clear, the rocks turned red and the breeze was blowing. We were now on the ridge will really nice views and a full size map of the Superstitions. We could see Bluff Spring Mtn, Malapais Mtn, Tortilla Peak, Black Mtn, Black Mesa, Black Top Mesa, Peters Mesa, Miners Needle, Weavers Needle, the ridgeline etc. This is a really nice place. Denny and I then hiked across the ridge to Peak 4586 (aka Mt Shasta) and had lunch. We discussed going to Tortilla peak but decided to go to Peak 4581 and see if we could off trail back to the trail head and make better time while covering new ground. That usually never works...until today. Unfortunately we didn't find anything new. Once back at the trail head we strolled over to the JF trail and found George Millers grave marker and put the cairn back up. When we returned to the TH again a group from SSAR had just returned from a hike. We talked with Donnie, Sendo and John about the search in the Tortilla area and the search near Sheep Mtn. It was nice meeting the SSAR group. Thanks for coming out Denny.

Wally and I took the Wally-mobile to Peter's trailhead to look for Jesse again. That road is always an adventure. We checked out Indian Spring II and headed up Indian Spring Canyon. We started on the left side but it got so thick we had to switch to the right. That worked out alot better and the few Poppies we saw were on that side anyway :) .Once we got to the saddle the rocks were red and it was a pretty cool area.Nice view of Tortilla Peak and it looks like you can take the ridgeline over to it.We went over the saddle and on to Peak 4586.No clues. All we saw were some old steel pop cans. The views of the Supes from up here are awesome. You can see so many other peaks.Very cool. You can even see Canyon and Saguaro Lakes. We ate lunch here then headed over to Peak 4581 before taking a Wally route back to the Jeep.No signs any where :( .We made good time heading back so Wally took me over to show me where George Miller's Grave was. When we got back to the trailhead some SSAR gentlemen were there.Sendo,Donnie, and John had done some searching too.It was nice to meet and talk to them.Such a vast area to search. No luck this time. Thanks for the hike and driving,Wally. You Rock!

Wally took me on another easy :o hike in the Supes. We were going to do a little looking around for clues on Jesse. The trail was burned in the beginning but after that it was good until our turn off by Kanes Spring. Our first time finding the spring. From there it was a little rough going to Tortilla Peak.I was surprised to see Jesse's name in the register. The way down was 10 times harder.Between the steepness, scree, trees, sharp rock, and cacti it was a real challenge.Except for the register we saw no clues.Next time will try another area.Wally spotted the wildlife this trip.Fox,Whitetail, couple raptors, and some quail.Wally treated at Tortilla Flats and we called it a day. Thanks to Wally for driving, the hike and dinner!
