Started hike about 7:30 in light wind and rain. Parked South trailhead on Northpark Rd. Did not realize the the water was up into the canyon by the bridge, so we had to back track and follow a game trail to the other side. No signs of the bridge that once was part of this trail. Cut over to the Yavapai point trail and hiked to the top for a great view of Lake Pleasant. Encountered several groups of hikers on the way down, but nobody coming from the south side like we did. Weather had cleared up before we reached the top, so the return hike was more enjoyable.

Started at playground about 7AM. Lots of people already on the trail. I'm new to this area, so this was my first time on this trail. Once I got some elevation, the views got a lot better and the people fewer. This is a great trail for a quick hike close to home.

First time hiking this trail. Once you get away from west and southern sections where it is mainly views of homes, this is a nice hike. Views to the east are excellent. Parked at the Sonoran Desert Trailhead and used the connector trails to get to this trail. Started early to avoid the heat. Only a few people on the trail. Did not see any owls although I thought I heard one. Maybe the mind playing tricks.
Didn't hike to the peak, so I'll have to do that another day. 8)

Nice day for this hike. Temp very cool for June. Started at 6AM and headed in a CCW direction around the loop. Lots of great views along the way. Talked to a very nice Ranger (Andy) for about 20 min. about all the trails in the area. Trail was in great condition and recent rain kept the dust down. No critters spotted today.

First time hiking this loop. Started early from the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve parking lot at the Desert Vista Trailhead. Headed east and going in counter clockwise direction around the loop. Lots of activity on the trail today. Joggers, bikes, and even 2 hot air balloons were within 5 feet of the trail. Trail is in good condition, but very rocky in parts. Has some great views to the North, East, and South. There are several other trails that connect to this one, so I will have to come back to check them out. :)

Needed a quick hike after work even though the temp was 103. Since this was a short hike and I had lots of water, there was not any issues. Trail is in good condition. Enjoyed the view from the top. Also was able to grab a GeoCache on my way out.

Camping in the area. One bar on cell phone in camp, but 5 bars at the top. Trail is rocky but in good condition. We got a little rain while going up, but it never got serious. Passed a bow hunter on the trail just before the top.

Got a late start on this passage. Didn't start hiking until 7:15 AM. My drive from Phoenix took longer than expected. Weather seemed perfect. Temp in the 60s and a clear sky. Hiking south to north from the Pine trailhead. Once I was on the trail, I realized it was quite humid. The dew on the plants and ground didn't help. The trail was soft and seemed almost muddy. Within the first mile my shirt was wet.
This section has a lot of rocks and small boulders along most of it. This makes it difficult to really get a good pace going. I slipped several times and blame it on the trail or my worn boots. I also fell flat on my face once, and can only blame that on me being clumsy. Rises in elevation start very early in the hike, so it isn't long before you're enjoying some great views.
Around mile 5, I passed two hikers headed south. They had come from another connecting trail and were just out for a quick hike.
At mile 6.5, I was startled by mama brown bear and her cub. I heard her before I seen her, and lucky for me she chose to head the other direction. At about 40 yards, she stopped and got herself between her cub and me. This is when she decided to give me the stink eye. We stared at each other forever (about a minute) before she moved on. Unfortunately, her path was very close to where I needed to go. After checking my GPSr, I was able to bushwhack and catch the trail further up. I've seen black bears before, but this was my first brown bear. And for those of you interested, finding my camera and taking a picture was not a high priority at that point in time.
I brought 5 liters of water and finished the last of it heading up the steep climb at the end. I had crossed multiple streams with running water, but only used it to cool off since I neglected to bring tablets or a water filter. Note to self: "tablets are very light"
This was a 90+ degree day, and I could have used the extra water.
Several sections are pretty overgrown with bushes due to recent rains, but you can still find your way using markers and the abundance of Cairns.

I got the pleasure of meeting and hiking with a new group of people on this trip. Richard and Jim are both excellent hikers with a lot of miles behind them. Thanks again to both of them and to Bob for providing the ride to the trailhead.
The hike was a lot more scenic than I expected, but I was disappointed to see quite a bit of trash and evidence of people living along the first half of the trail. Maybe this section Steward could schedule a cleanup. :?
Evidence of the Schultz fire from June of 2010 can still be seen, but this is easily offset by the new green in the hills and forest that remains.
Most of the elevation gains along this section are gradual and it makes it easy to set a pretty good pace. Water was not a problem, and although the temp seemed a bit warmer than expected, I still only used about 3 liters of water. All in all it was another great hike along the AZT.

On Friday, Andrew, Dan, and I drove to Rogers Trough. The road is in fairly good condition. I won't say you need a 4x4, but you do need a vehicle with some good ground clearance. Don't bring the family car!

We were amazed at the number of vehicles parked at the Trailhead. Several more arrived after us, and both groups headed out on Passage 19. They told us it was just a one night campout.
Our plan was to camp at Rogers Trough Friday night, and leave one vehicle there while we took the other to the Picketpost Trailhead on Saturday morning to start our hike.
I don't think any of us thought it would get as cold as it did Friday night. The lows in Phoenix had been in the 60s the past week, but that night at Rogers Trough, it got down to 35. What a difference elevation can make. I woke up cold several times during the night.
We were up at 4:45 Saturday morning. We ate, packed up and headed to Picketpost. The view driving out of Rogers Trough was amazing. The early morning sun on the mountains made for some great pictures. We also stopped along the road to grab some pics of Elephant Arch. It really does look like an Elephant.

3 hours from the time we woke up, we started our hike. The time getting ready and driving to Picketpost ate up a good chunk of our hiking time. Looking back, we should have just dropped off a vehicle and drove to Picketpost on Friday. We would have saved at least 2 hours.
Hiking north, we passed under US60. The trail is in great shape and easy to follow. We kept looking back at the awesome views of Picketpost Mountain.

This section passes through a lot of land used for open cattle grazing. We were passed by three cowboys with horses and a dog herding the cattle. I think one of the cowboys thought he was going to scare us by asking if we seen any snakes yet. I guess we must have looked like some newbies to him. Although he told us we would see them, we never seen a snake the whole day. With the warm weather and tall grass, I was kind of surprised we didn't.

At coordinates N33 18.226 W111 09.199 we crossed our first stream with running water. Having hiked only 5.5 miles into this section we had plenty of water. We continued to hike along this stream or others like it all day long. The down side to these streams is the cattle. Their fresh droppings are all over the trail. The smell and the flies they attract is not very pleasant. Be sure to treat the water if you drink it.

The real work on this hike seems to start about mile 10. This is where we started to get some serious elevation gain. From mile 10 to mile 16 there is almost a 3000 ft gain. While this was not excessive, it seemed worse because we had already gone 10 miles.
The hike up took its toll on Andrew. He forgot his treking poles, so I gave him mine to use, and Dan shared his water with him. It was a long trek to the top, and by the time we got there, Andrew was spent. Fortunately for us, the top of the hill is also where you reach FR650. This is mile 16.2. Andrew rested along the road while Dan and I finished the last 2.4 miles of the hike and returned with the vehicle to pick him up.
Aside form the cattle, this passage gave us some of the best views we've seen on the trail. Not just the mountains, but the wild flowers and wild life (deer) as well. Just another fine day on the Arizona Trail. :)

Dan and I hiked this passage over two days. Stopping at Gapgage Wash (mile 13) the first day and continuing on from that location the second day.

This is a perfect example of the need for a backup plan when you do these hikes. We had a flawless plan to leave a vehicle at each end of the passage and one at mile 13 with supplies to camp out and water for the second day. This was a 3 person plan. At 6AM on Saturday morning, two of us are sitting at the trailhead and the third member calls to say he isn't going to be able to make the trip. Ugh! After reviewing all the possible scenarios, we opted for some creative vehicle juggling.

On day one, we left one vehicle at mile 13 and drove the other to the Tiger Mine TH. From there we hiked north to mile 13. We drove back to Tiger Mine TH and took both vehicles to the Freeman TH where we spent the night. On day two, we drove one truck back to mile 13 and hiked the second half of the passage to the Freeman TH. Lucky for us, we both have 4x4 trucks so running up the Gapgage wash was not a problem and quite fun. I think a 4x2 could make it, but the sand may cause problems is spots. Should anyone desire my GPX file for getting to mile 13, just let me know.

The hike itself was great. Gradual elevation gains and great views along the way. The temperature was in the low 80's and windy, but just enough wind to keep you cool. In two days, we passed two other people on the trail. Both within 5 miles of the Tiger Mine TH on day one. We got passed by a biker heading North and a fast moving girl headed south.
The trail itself was in good condition, with plenty of markers and Cairns along the way. There were a few spots where the trail was hard to spot because of new growth from recent rains. Nothing we couldn't handle. We didn't see a single snake on the trail, but we did get to spend some quality time with a large Gila monster on day two.

Looking back, we probably could have done this section in one day, but there is no way we would have had time to enjoy the journey. Another great AZT hike!

Dan, Dillon, Cherie, Andrew & and Smokie the wonder dog joined me as we hiked this Passage. We all met at the parking lot at the end of the passage where Dillon, Cherie, and Dan had camped the night before. A steady wind made the 40 degree temp feel a lot colder. After the group got packed up, we left two vehicles behind and drove to the southern end of passage 13 where our hike started.
The trailhead has a wooden arch for passage 13 and across the road sits a fancier archway for the end of passage 12. We used our gps to figure out which one was for passage 13. I'm not sure why they don't mark them for us non-thru hikers. I will post pics for any future section hikes that need help.
Took some neat pictures of the American Flag building and an old barn at the trailhead. I'm sure there is some history behind them both.
Shortly after we started hiking we all had to stop and remove our jackets as the wind had died down and the sun was providing some welcomed warmth.
All around us were great views. Some of the distant mountains still had spots of snow from previous winter storms.
The trail itself was firm, but not hard packed or too rocky. This would be a great section for bikers.
The highlight of the section is the Windmill. It has a picnic table and bench for resting. I started up the windmill and ran it for about 20 minutes, but it did not produce any water. Either the Well was dry, or the pump needed to be primed. In either case, I wouldn't count on getting good drinking water from it right now. The water tub was dry and the in-ground water catch was full of depris and would requre some heavy filtering and treating before I'd consider drinking it.
The second half of the hike has the most elevation gain, but nothing too difficult and the hilltops provide some great views and more photo opportunities.
The underpass at Hwy 77 was free of debris and any graffiti. Nice job Steward!
After we crossed the highway we proceeded up the Old Tiger Road to the parking lot where we left our vehicles. It would be great if they could cut a trail from the highway to the parking lot. Roads always make me feel like I'm cheating when I hike.

Dan, Andrew, and I hiked this passage over 2 days. Dan and I camped at the parking area above the RR Tracks and the Gila river near Kelvin. We wanted to camp out here the night before the start of our hike so we'd be fresh when Andrew arrived Saturday morning. Our plan was to leave one vehicle at Kelvin and drive to the Freeman Trailhead on Saturday and start from the South end. Bad Move! This time of year, this area above the Gila River is not a good place to camp. The temp got down to 21 degrees that night. We figure it was almost 20 degrees colder than the Freeman Trailhead.
Day 1 we were up at 06:30, We met up with Andrew at 07:15 and finished packing our back packs before heading to the Freeman Trailhead. I mapped out how to get to the Freeman Trailhead from the West end by Florence, but not from the East side on Highway 77. After some tense moments discussing GPS navigation we were able to find Freeman Rd. Three guys with 3 GPSs is not a good thing.
At the Freeman Trailhead we found work crews installing a cable fence around the parking lot. Our hats off to the the people working to make the AZ Trail better.
Dan had some issues with his backpack, so we didn't get to start our hike until almost 10:30. Aside for some strong winds, it was a perfect day to hike.
The trail was well marked and easy to follow with the exception of at the 15-123 mark where the trail leaves the road and heads East. The marker that should be at that point was missing or I just didn't see it. We had to back track a short distance to get back on track. This time there was no argument over which way to go.
Mile 13.5 is where we had cached water the week before, so we setup camp here about 100 feet off the trail.
Day 2 started out windy, but quite a bit warmer than the day before. We were packed and on the trail by 8:45. Everyone was a little stiff from the day before, but it wasn't long before it wore off.
Around mile 16 we got our first glance of the Big Hill. We could see the trail going up although we were still about 4 miles away. It looked a little intimidating. The next several miles was spent going down in elevation while crossing the same wash at least a half dozen times. After a small climb, we decended into Ripsey Wash where we seen a White Chevy Surburban parked. This turned out to be a husband and wife team of hikers from Tucson that were section hiking the whole trail as day hikes. They had already hiked several hundred miles and were hiking this portion today. It was nice talking to them.
The Big Hill turned out to be a lot easier to climb then we expected, but we were not disappointed by the great 360 degree views from the top. This was the High Point of the trip in several ways. These great views continued most of the way to the way to the Florence-Kelvin Hwy and the end of our journey.

I've hiked this route several times, but this is the first time with Larry. We started at the Pima Canyon TH to hiked west to Marker 45 on National Trail. This was 13.3 miles form Pima Canyon. Larry continued to the end of National Trail to meet his ride. My ride was meeting me at the Chandler and 19th Ave TH, so I headed South and caught the Gila Trail back to Ahwautkee. Lots of hikers on the trail. I suspect this is bacause this was the one day a month that the road to the West end is open. Great day for a hike and with the cool tempeatures, I only used about 2 liters of water.

I hiked this passage with Andrew and Dan. We parked one vehicle at the Gabe Zimmerman TH and drove my truck to Lakes TH. I have a State Trust permit, so I didn't have any problem leaving my truck at that end. Vehicle logistics is always the hardest part of these hikes.
We started the hike about 8AM under cloudy skies and threat of rain. The trail was soft from previous rains, but not muddy and in great shape overall. The lake contains plenty of water for anyone looking to refill. A white pickup sat on a distant hill and watched us as we headed down the trail. Not sure what the deal was there. Maybe we were just paranoid or maybe he was just looking for his cattle. Good or bad, I notice that those voices in my head talk a lot more when I'm on the trail. I'm just glad most of the voices are interesting. :)
After hiking Alamo Canyon last time out, this section was a welcome relief from constant elevation changes. Dan and I talked about doing this section on our mountain bikes.
Andrew and I met the guy that repairs all the gates on the AZT at a REI class on hiking the trail. I think of him everytime we pass through one of these gates. I wish I could remember his name. BTW all the gates on this section are in great shape.
Around the Sahuarita Rd and 83 crossing we noticed a helicopter flying around with a guy at the end of a rope. I'm guessing is was some sort of military training mission. "There goes those voices again." :)
Crossing I-10 consisted of going through another nice gate and a long tunnel. We were surprised that the tunnel was free of debris and graffiti. Nice job Stewards and Volunteers!
After crossing we were treated to some great views of Davidson Canyon and the mountains to the North before dropping down to the Gabe Zimmerman TH and the end of our hike.
Aside form a few drops of rain, this was a dry hike. Cold, but dry. I can't believe that in 14 miles I shot 50 pictures, and what I had expected to be a boring hike turned out to be very nice. Arizona continues to surprise me.
