| no partners | | as always this area is steep and overgrown, the trail was much easier to use this year than last, did a big loop using 93 - 70 - 73 - 74 - 75 -65 - 315, which is just a loop starting along the east fork of kp creek, then following along kp creek for a few miles, breaking away and crossing up and over into the next drainage (steeple creek), up to mudspring, further onto moonshine park, then dropping down onto grant creek and following the creek all the way to its source at about 9200ft, then following along what is labeled steeple trail (even thought it really is 65 upper grant trail) past long cienega and joning up to 315 to the trailhead
ran into the blue crew, out there doing trail maintainance, they were clearing deadfall and cutting new trail along steeple - it washed out after the fire that burned thru
93 & 70
they were unusually easy to follow, now when i say that i mean relative to my other experiences in this area, which means they are still relatively faint
73 - 74
only use small sections of these trails, maybe 2 miles each and they were pretty faint and require some pretty good route finding skills, but still easier than in the past, the blue crew is really cleaning up the area
75
as with any other hike down to the bottom of grant creek or kp this one is steep, the trail was very faint but manageable for being a primitive trail, i counted 28 creek crossings along the trail, and a section of killer switchbacks only to drop right back down!!!, coming from the bottom this trail is easy to find, however from the top it is very easy to miss as the TH is in a small meadow, if coming from this direction just walk to the opposite side of the meadow and the trail should be faintly visible, tough to get lost in a max 30yd canyon though
65 (marked as 73)
i could be wrong but on the maps i have this trail that connects from 315 over to grant creek and long cienega is 65, but the posted signs labeled it as steeple even though it didnt connect to steeple, lost it at mckintrick spring, looking at topo we climbed up and over into next drainage, heard some people farther down the meadow so i think the trail was rerouted thru the meadow and around the small peak we climbed
315
easy enough to follow until you reach the burn area, where ferns dominate the area, need to really look for the trail here |
