I'd read about this new trail system in the SW part of Tucson called Robles Pass Trails Park with a 1000 acres and decided to do a recon walk on it. There's no signage yet and I look forward to seeing that posted.
At the start from Irvington Road, we immediately encountered some stone structures that looked the work of the CCC. I have no idea about their history. We ran into several other hikers and a horse and rider. The trail is easy with light climbing and the views are truly beautiful. Some spring flowers were showing: brittle bush, fairy duster in particular.
I will print off the city trail map and take next time so I'll understand how the trails hook up. It's a keeper and we'll return for more hiking. That would be at http://www.pima.gov/nrpr/parks

This was the first hike I've ever done in the Sweetwater Preserve and I loved it! Easy walking, pretty level, not too rock. A wonderful place to enjoy just being in the desert. The saguaros here are HUGE and pretty fat and sassy-looking right now. I was amazed at the denseness of them. Lots of barrel cacti and ocotillo also. In the Tucson Mountains, I can only imagine how beautiful this trail system is during blooming season. We did see lots of fallen and dead saguaros, probably due to last year's severe freeze. We basically started out on The Spine Trail and walked the perimeter and used the connecting trails to stay on the outside edge. We took one little loop: the Sun Circle Loop and then headed on back to the parking lot. Next time I think we'll walk on the inner connecting trails.
We met up with lots of horses and mountain bikers and folks out walking with their dogs. Of course, this being a Sunday may account for that.
The 12 different trails have signage now so it's easy to keep track of where you're going. You can't really get lost because they all tie up together eventually.
I hope to return many more times to walk through this enchanting preserve.

This part of the AZT was recently dedicated to the memory of Gabe Zimmerman. There are a couple memorials to him as well as signage about the area. My partner Kath and I parked in the large lot (no restrooms) and walked along the Northern Trail to the 3 Bridges. Walking in sandy creek bed with some water flow. A beautiful day, sunny and warm. Lots of huge barrel cacti, prickly pear and some saguaros high up along the cliffs. I think this would be a beautiful walk when the fall leaves come out.

I found someone's iPhone just as we started our hike and tried to find them to no avail. We were able to call her family on the phone (luckily it wasn't locked) and actually ran into her and her 2 sweet Goldens just as we were exiting the trail. That was a happy event!
We would like to return and go on the Southern part next time as we understand it's a lovely meandering section of the trail and easy to walk.
I loved being here and felt Gabe's spirit as we walked.

This was a very short trip for us along this section of the AT. A hot day and it was easy going but starting climbing with some loose rock. We didn't make it to Red Rock Canyon but plan to do that on the next try. Nobody around and wonderful views of the Canelo Hills outside Patagonia.

First time on the Marshall Gulch and what a beautiful time of year to walk it. Perfect temperatures, wildflowers on the trail, and the trees are turning color. It has some ups and downs but is a easy to see and navigate trail. I think we missed that turn over the creek and kept hiking up until we decided to walk back down since we were low on water.
Yes, this area shows the devastation of the wildfires but it's definitely recovering and that in itself makes it a worthy walk to watch nature heal itself.
We will definitely put this one on our favorites list (it's closed from Dec. 15 to Mar. 1).
Wonderful picnic areas where you park by Sabino Creek. Just an all around lovely place to bring the family and dog! for a day hike.

K and I walked this trail on this cool and windy day and loved it. We had a little trouble finding the trailhead at Dove Mountain's Ritz Carleton (they don't give out maps anymore :( ) but once we got going the signage for all the trails in the system there was excellent. (We want to return and walk the Javelina Trail).
The saguaros are blooming, the chollas are blooming, the prickly pears were sparse, spotted one bunny and several lizards. The views along the way and all the desert flora was beautiful and easy walking to boot.
We climbed up the Spur Trail a little ways and when we started down, we made a stop at the stone house off the trail. Pretty cool.
Saw only 2 other hikers.
Can't wait to return in the fall.

We didn't get all the way to the top of Wasson Peak but we had a wonderful leisurely walk and enjoy photographing all the blooming saguaros, chollas, ocotillos, and prickly pears. They're really starting to strut their stuff now.
A flat and easy walking trail (sandy at the start) for the first mile and then it starts uphill gradually. This is where we turned around. We'd like to return another cool day and try getting to the top. I was glad to hear they have some "senior citizen switchbacks" along the way. ;)
They're doing a major retrofit on the trailhead parking lot but just park across the street.
I think this would be a great trip to take friends on...the drive over Gate's Pass, hike this trail, and drive back out along the Gate's Pass Road. They will really get their fill of our beautiful Sonoran Desert. Especially in the spring when the desert is coming alive with all the cacti blooming. :)

I have to say this was a convoluted hiking day for us. I'm still not sure what part of the trail we were on but I know we were in the Agua Caliente area. We started out and hit the first fork in the road, passed a cowboy on his horse who told us to take the right fork. Wrong! So as we walking along the stream bed, we ran into a lady with her Golden Retriever and told her we were trying to find the Milagrosa Trail. She told us to go back to that fork and go right. So off we went and climbed and climbed. Wonderful views! I think this was the ridge trail.
We turned around and started down and bumped into another hiker who told us we should have taken a LEFT turn before the stream bed. Will I try this one again? hmmmm, maybe. There were lots of houses around and I kept thinking, why can't someone just put a doggone trail sign up??
Lots blooming! The saguaro blossoms are out, the chollas, the prickly pears, and the ocotillos. They were wonderful to see and enjoy.
I consider this a sweet walk through the blooming cactus forest.

Took this short walk along the trail. Easy walking with soft sand. Did not go to the arch this time. Lovely temperatures and beautiful red rock canyons on either side. Hiked it with Mar and Kath. Seems to be a popular trail for sunset walks.
Used My Tracks for recording the walk.

This was a fun historic trip. It starts at ghost town American Flag which has some old cattle fencing and the oldest surviving territorial post office in Arizona. When you arrive at American Flag, take the Arizona Trail on the right. You start climbing but the trail is nicely marked and easy to walk. Wildflowers are starting to bloom (photos) at lower elevations, desert spoon everywhere, and cool boulder formations as you ascend. We got to the top and scrambled up a hillside to see High Jinx Mine, an historic site and Buffalo Bill Cody's home at one time. Private property signs kept us from exploring but I later found out we could ask the caretaker for permission to look around. (There's a road that drives up the mine.)
Spectacular views and worth the trip up. The Arizona Trail continues on past the mine (which is where we turned around) and goes to Oracle Ridge. Maybe we'll try to finish up that part some day.
Afterwards we visited "Mountain View Hotel" (now a Baptist church) in Oracle where the Cody family lived for a while. This was most definitely a Buffalo Bill Day.
I posted a Google map of this trip with waypoints using "My Tracks" on my Droid.

Kath and I left in mid-morning and by the end of the hike, it was getting a bit warm. 76. It's another rocky canyon trail but easy to do with not any steep hills. We didn't make it to the dam but will make that the goal on the next trip.
Ocotillos were blooming bright orange, yellow flowers were out, prickly pears were sprouting their new paddle buds. Lots of saguaros and cholla cacti. Sunny and breezy day and just lovely to be on the trail.

Great views of Tucson and of Mt. Wrightson.

Wow! I feel like a real Tucsonan now for finally hiking to Seven Falls. It was a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze and the trail was full of hikers, mostly young people and families.
I'd say right off that this hike might not be for you if you have a fear of heights, don't like rocky trails, and don't care for stream crossings.
The first part of the trail was easy and wide, can't get lost for this is the only trail to the falls. We wound up making 7 creek crossings and with the water low, we were able to rockhop and not get our feet wet. :) Towards the end it started getting rockier and steeper until we finally arrived at the falls where the trail is WAY up from the bottom. Spectacular views and the time to get the camera out. From there you have to descend down onto the rocks to get to the falls and pools. Well worth the ending to a beautiful hike. Most people had packed a lunch and were sitting down by the falls enjoying their meal.
We saw lots of leafing trees, mainly cottonwoods. The ocotillos were just starting to give off their orange blossoms. All along the way you're treated to fields of saguaros, chollas, prickly pears, palo verdes, and mesquites. Some itty bitty blue and white flowers were starting to peek out but nothing really going on in the wildflower department.
The Sabino Canyon tram takes to to and fro the trailhead which was wonderful. Active mountain lion sightings were posted but with so many people using this trail, I didn't worry about it....too much.
I used "My Tracks" on my Droid and posted the hike with waypoints on Google maps.

Picked a cool day to hike this trail for the first time. We walked on a road the whole time. 2 NPS trucks passed us, one ditch digger and crew putting in culverts, and 1 trail runner. Other than that, we were alone the whole time. Saw a red-tailed hawk and quite a few birds. No flowers yet.
An easy, flat but with a couple hills, trail to walk in the Rincons with a great view of Rincon Peak much of the time. The valley was full of old, large saguaros. A really pretty walk.
We made it to Hope Camp where there are some interesting ruins of a water tanks and windmill and building slab on the grounds. Arizona Trust Lands border it. We did not go to the North Hope Camp but perhaps will do that on our next trip.
At the start was a warning about mountain lions and killer bees.
I used "My Tracks" on my Droid to record our trip.

This trail intersects with Sutherland Trail and is a flat, wide, and easy walking loop through the desert. Streams were running with water and trees were starting to leaf out. Butterflies spotted occasionally but no flowers yet. This trail has lots of huge saguaros. Great for dogs and horses and families with little kids.

A very enjoyable hike along a loop trail at Starr Pass Resort. It meets up with Bowen Trail. Pretty rocky but has great views of the surrounding mountains.
We will add this to our list of hikes to take friends on.

Drove to Kentucky Camp and then started walking along the trail. Very easy and relatively flat. Stopped at the t-bone section, about 1/2 way to Gardner Canyon and backtracked.
Would be a great hike for friends visiting to see the wild open spaces of southern AZ and be on a famous trail and gold mining town.
We'd like to go in two cars next time so we can do the whole length to Gardner Canyon.
Went with K.

Kath and I took this hike after visiting Sanctuary Cove and parking there. We walked along Scenic Rd. and once we crossed into Saguaro Park land, it began the climb. Rocky going with lots of loose stone. We had 2 small hills like this to climb and then the rest was flat. Great views of Safford Peak on the right and Tucson and Rattlesnake Ridge on the left. Nothing blooming but lots of choola and saguaros. Met Dixie the quarterhorse on the trail and saw another couple hikers. Other than that, and the fact it was heating up to near 80, the trail was wonderful and quiet.
We have no plans to do the steep rock climbing required to get to the peak.
A nice way to end the day after visiting the Cove.
Arizona Perfect Day.

Kath and I drove to the Camino de Oeste, parked and walked up the trail. Busy with lots of families with small kids today. Some runners and a couple mountain bikers but not as busy as the Phoneline trail.
A perfect AZ day with temps around 70. We walked only to the Bowens' Old Stone House and then back. Saw no animals but some scat on the trail. Nothing blooming. A gentle wind kicked up on the return leg. We would like to do this with friends and 2 cars and start up at Gates Pass before the heat arrives. The trail was easy and pretty well marked and loaded with saguaros all along the way. A really beautiful trail through the canyon, albeit a short one for us today. Definitely on our list of trails to take visiting friends.

Hiked this beautiful trail for the first time today with California friends, Beth and Laura, and Kath. Beautiful, blue skies and temps in the 70's. Perfection.
Trail was switchback climbing til we reached a plateau and then it was level before descending. Spectacular views of the valley and canyon as we hiked.
Saw no animals but lots of folks on the trail.
It's now a favorite of mine, next to Ft. Bowie. :D

Kath and I parked at Juan Santa Cruz Picnic Grounds and proceeded on down to the trail. Beautiful day that was getting a bit warm at the end. Kath thinks this would be a great winer hike but not one to do on a hot day. Brittlebush, creosote, fiddlenecks, campions, and ocotillo were blooming. Saw only 1 critter: a lizard sunning on the rocks. Peg took lots of photos with the G10 :) Possibly drop off hikers at Gilbert Ray and go park the car at Juan Santa Cruz and hike towards each other....for those wanting to hike along all 3 hills on the trail.
