Beautiful day in a spectacular canyon. All anchor webbing looked good. Water was pretty cold. I would recommend at least a 3/2 wetsuit for comfort. Most pools were wadeable, but two required short swims. Exit trail is still well-marked with cairns. My GPS route is for an easier approach with a steep sneak exit, no car shuttle required. Take the 260 to 142 then to the 142 C.

Great canyon, the views on the approach are great and the canyon didn't disappoint either. This is a " big canyon" so start early and plan on 7 hours. There are 7 rappels with the longest being 70 feet and all the webbing is in good condition. There was some water in the canyon but it all could be stemmed. Lots of down climbing and some bushwacking. My gps clocked 9 miles not sure why. Just a great day.

Great Canyon!! Easy approach from Loy Canyon Trail some scrambling. The views where amazing crystal clear day and temps in the 50's.

All anchors are in great condition, no pull issues. Some Very light flow, just enough to soak our rope.

I do agree some of the starts are tricky but easy to figure out (hip slide).

Great one to just enjoy.

Great short hike that goes through the forest and ends at an interesting formation. Great views of the canyon and the Painted Desert in the background. There is also a permitted camp spot that would make for a nice easy backpack.

Decide to hike 151 to the fire tower on Aztec Peak even though the road was open to the top. The trail is severely overgrown and requires route finding or a gps. Once at the top, we decided to hike the road down. Overall a great exercise hike with wonderful views from the top.

FR 487 half way up is high clearance only, large rocks and a couple of deep pot holes. There are few turn arounds so you're committed once you start up.

The road to the trailhead (FR68) is very passable but really rough - lots of exposed rocks and a few drops or steps. You need a high clearance vehicle - be it 2x or 4x and no, a Subaru will not make it.

Nelson Trail #159: Fairly easy to follow but lots of large leaves on the trail this time of year. It is very scenic hiking along the creek.

Willow Springs Trail: Reasonably easy to follow at first, but dead fall and over growth make it hard to follow as you follow the trail. Around .5 mile from the junction, you will see a trail going straight - do not follow it! Instead, turn right and follow the drainage up to the Verde Rim trail.

Verde Rim Trail: Over grown and hard to follow but otherwise in good shape. Very scenic with great views once you reach to the summit of Pine Mountain.

Pine Mountain Trail: Very overgrown and tons of downfall with a steep descent. Not my favorite trail.

Overall, it was an enjoyable hike for most of the journey. The trails seemed much less defined than prior years.

Great canyon very interesting topography. The first rappel is soon to be a keeper and shorter folks might have a challenge. We exited up the sneak route aka Four Boulders exit. I would not recommend this exit, steep, slow going and lots of climbing. This trip is listed at 2.6 miles but I ended up logging 7 miles. We were on track most of the time.

Meh, not very scenic. The vistas are nice and a bit by Bronco creek is nice. But other than that I would consider it an exercise trail.

Easy approach followed by some cool rappels with awesome views. As you leave forest road 213 stay high and work you way down at the last minute. This will avoid serious bush waking. The rappel sequence is as follows: 90',190',70',170'. FYI the third rap is chains DCR not the red webbing. The exit is now hiking up Fish creek hill to the rest area at the top. I recommend having a shuttle vehicle to get back to the trailhead. The road between the lookout and T/H was super busy. Not a destination canyon, but a great one to get some practice.

Great fall color stroll up See Spring trail. We hiked part way up See Canyon, but turned around a mile or so in, as it is really overgrown and lots of down fall.

Great canyon lots of opportunities to slide. Need least to say is a beautiful canyon as well. I'm not sure on the current cfs rating. But I can say it's flowing enough that most raps we hip slid. FYI the rap lengths on Rope Wiki are questionable so make sure your rope is all the way down. All anchors are in good condition as well.

Just spent 5 days at Hannagan Meadow great weather.

So if your in the area the below drive is well worth doing. A car could probably do it but you would better off with a truck or suv 2 or 4 wheel drive. There is a campground with bathroom at the Blue river. If you do go, go to the back of the camp ground where you'll find a gate. Thru the gate are some petroglyphs on the cliff face.
https://www.arizonahighways.com/explore ... range-loop

The other drive is Forest road 26 to Black River and Buffalo crossing. FR 26 is directly across from Red hill rd same condition as above about 12 miles one way.

Feel free to ask for more detail

Did this as a backpack a couple years ago and wanted my wife to see the area. After getting her to commit to a long day hike, off we went. We had a beautiful day for the hike - sunny a little warm. My wife and I agreed afterwards that this is a "B" hike. From P-bar down to the split of 305 and 306, it is really overgrown but there are some nice vistas ...so wear pants or take some shears. From the split, we went straight to the cabin. The cabin is not all that fascinating, but worth doing. The hike along the creek was one of the nicer highlights. Overall a great backpack or long day hike if you are in the area.

Great canyon. I found the boulder field entrance a little longer and more challenge than described. Even though the rappels are relatively short they are still fun great place to practice awkward starts. The rappel section was dry and most anchors were in decent shape. We were trying to beat a storm that was rolling in. With that said if any one goes down there you might want to replace some webbing it's starting to dry out. Lastly I made a rookie error on the first rappel and ending up leaving a rope. :(

Beautiful area the cliffs surround the canyons are impressive. We ended up not doing the hike because of the d**UTV's and a massive 4 x 4 club meet. No joke there had to be 50 people there. Seems like a popular area so going during the week might be better.
We did not realize we needed to go through the gate to get to the trailhead. So this puts you at 3 miles from the right turn. Our Grand cherokee could have made it but you'll get some AZ pinstriping.

Me and 4 friends meetup to tackle this canyon. What a great day, perfect weather. El Cap is holding some standing water some waist deep. So we choose the sport climb at the first rappel. This is a great training canyon due to the fact that the rappels have awkward starts.
So just when you think your alone more people appear. We ended up sharing the canyon with 3 other canyoneers.

Thanks outdoor_lover for organizing a great outing. It was so awesome ... your baked cookies and chocolate covered strawberries illustrated the effort your made to make the hike great.
It was great to finally put a face to some of the dedicated hikers that post awesome triplogs.

Myself and 5 others did James Canyon this past weekend. The weather was perfect at 80F and overcast of and on.
This is a very beautiful canyon worth doing...lots of awe inspiring cliffs and hidden coves. It is also worth staying in the canyon. There is no need to exit the water course - we did not wear wet suits and we were just fine. But I will admit that the water was cold at times. For the water areas, an inflatable tube to handle the gear is advisable.
I would say this canyon with exit is more like 6 miles. All anchors were in good condition and usable. There is also some rope tied to dead fall which really helped us out.
I would not attempt this one on my own, a partner will be a huge help.

Pumpkin trail up to Kendrick peak is a good trail. Your very exposed in some areas, but overall nice hike. Bull Basin on the other hand pretty much sucked. The fire lookout advised me that there were several trees down on the trail. OK, so no big deal, wrong. The first couple miles were really slow going because of this, then add in loose gravel type rock. You guessed it nice and slick and yes I loose my footing and ended up on the ground. Several parts of this trail go out into meadows so you will not find the trail unless you have a gps. There are some rock carins but it was nice have the the track uploaded to my gps, because sometimes you swear you on a deer path.
I would not recommend going up this trail because of the slick exposed upper sections. Had I not been at the bottom of the hill I would have turned around. If you choose to go this way plan on an extra hour of hike and wear pants you legs will thank you.
