I've hiked the Supes for years but never did the full Get #1 in one shot. It was hot as hell and the water was scarce, but I did it.

Closing out my section hike of the AZT with AZT Trail in a day. I'd slept near winter road trailhead the night before and I got up just before true dawn, packed my gear and started blasting though the last few miles left for me.

Great weather and several SoBos to wish well along the way. Gotta say though, those switchbacks near the end are just pumpkin. Seems like they needed to pad miles

Got to trail end, took a few completion photos, talked with Medicine Man (who was starting SoBo tomorrow) waited for the rest of my crew to roll in after me, took a few last looks around and called it done.

Thanks to the many folks who hiked and backpacked with me along the AZT over the years, the trail angels, the shuttle angels, the trail maintenance crews, AZTA, and anyone else remotely connected with keeping this trail alive.

Did this as an overnight linking 42 and 43 to close out the AZT the same way I'd started it; backpacking. Took my time since I knew this was my next to last section and really savored it. We didn't use the AZT reroute from the burn scar, but rather took hwy247 (which was also a wreck) since it shaved like 2 miles off the reroute. Most of the south-bounders we encountered were using 247 as well. So black tarry mud, and complementary AZT foot weights from the parts of the route adjacent to the fire damage and all day it smelled like I'd been at a campfire. I know it will all bounce back over time but it is still a bummer to see.

I picked up my stashed water at 4Winter Road junction and made my final camp of my AZT section hikes that night. Perfect dark sky and very cold. Coyotes sang me off to sleep.

Weather was much kinder to us this day, and the views were work the drive. The wildlife drink was excellent and I really liked the little sign about how it was paid for by our taxes and we should take care of it. Downhill passages are always appreciated....

Done as a day hike. Some rain in morning and a little cold. Very cool section though. Aspen for days. It was a long day, but worth the work.

It started raining (and sleeting) about 10 minutes after we started the hike and did so for the first half of the day. So honestly, I pretty much just watched my feet to keep from tripping. Last half of hike was fairly cherry. Aspens changing colors was neat as well. Hit the Historic Ranger Tower near the park boundary and as an engineer, I'd lock that away from the public. Bent structural steel, rust and loose hardware. It does not need to be open for people to climb. Fence that feces off GCNP!

Since I couldn't seem to scare up a shuttle for this one I decided to yo-yo the canyon instead. S Kaibab to N Kaibab on Saturday and back through Bright Angel on Sunday. I kind of screwed up on the first 3 miles of S Kaibab; in wanting to get away from the crowds I went high gear down and by mile 3 my right knee informe4d me I'd better back off or we're ending this sooner than expected. That knee plagued me the rest of the trip. Ran across 2 cases of hyperthermia down in the canyon, and helped both of them get cooled off and self-rescue. This ate into my hiking time a lot as well but why have the training and not use it? Made it up to the North Rim around 930 that night and crashed at the hiker trash campsite. Back on trail 7am next day and didn't get out of north rim until 0320 the following day. Also helped another hyperthermia victim that day. Seriously there are a ton of people that have no reason being down there. I can't see ever doing the Canyon again; I mean, I hate Hate HATE so many of the people that go through there. Just a boatload of entitled, narcissistic children who fail to appreciate and respect the land. Between Bluetooth speakers blaring feces music, complete disregard of right of ways and trail etiquette, to a freezer sized ziplock of trash I picked up each day. I'll venture far from the tourist from now on, thank you.

Pretty flat and easy til Tusayan, then holy hell is that asphalt track brutal. I hate road walking. GCNP is touristy but always a banger of a view. We should have just slackpacked it.

The passage so nice we did it twice! Opting to not burn extra gas and setup a shuttle we decided to yo-yo this passage making for a 38 mile round trip. Russel Tank is incredible, Grandview Tower, eh, nice view but the pit toilet will wipe you out if you're up there. Lots of night time traffic on North end as there was a large bike race and then a large foot race. So maybe timing wasn't optimal. Still, fun hike.

split into a 20 mile/ 16 mile traverse. We opted to cache water at FR418 rather than rely on sources. Still checked a bunch of them. The first 20 were awesome (even that 6 mile uphill slough) but the second day was mostly either road walking or walking near a road as labor day partiers and hunters burned up and down the roads kicking up rooster tails everywhere. I can't even vocalize how much I hate Razer type vehicles. Got to be a trail angel to some 1st time bikepackers that went out with not enough water or even a way to filter primitive sources.

Did as a carcamp/dayhike with Arizona Backpacking Club. Eh, it's mostly road. Did run in to the AZT trail workers that were about fixing that by cutting new trail but too late for me.

Another great trip. LOVE Mary's Cafeand the Conoco station off 89. Everyone is very backpacker friendly. The redirects for logging kind of sucked but water was plentiful, which allowed us to keep our weight down.

Was supposed to be part of a 54 mile AZT 31-33 loop but rain and near freezing temps made us bail after completing 33 and the southern tip of 31 to Marshall Lake TH. Kinda neat trail and the reroute through Flagstaff is fun. Especially snagging a hot coffee in those low temps. It's also jarring to go from the quiet of the wilderness to the bustle of Flagstaff and the traffic of cars and trains.

Did as a beginner overnighter for the club even though we could have all done it as a day hike. It's flat, pretty views and forced me to look up the NPOI when I got back as I'd never heard of it. On to 31-33!

Originally was going to do 29&30 together as an overnighter, but sketchy weather made us decide to just to 29 as a dayhike and go home. Great trip, very easy terrain, very pleasant to hike through the woods.

Started out just fine but it's monsoon season so the rain started not much after we did. Was fun at first but when the road walking all turned into gumbo galoshes it knocked down our estimates for mileage. Did first 21 miles on first day and the remaining 9-ish miles on the following day. Glad we did too since a bitch of a thunderstorm was brewing with the kind of thunder that makes your loins bunch up. Regardless, was a great trip.

Continuing SoBo from Washington park. Very cold. Good trail but was full of PUDs after we got past Washington Park. Every water source along the way was full to bursting thanks to the showers we'd had 2 days previous. Challenging hike with some great views.

Done with AZT 24 for shuttling purposes. Camped at Mt Peeley TH on Thursday started hiking Friday Morning. Plan was to knock out 15 miles first day, 15 second and final 10 on Sunday. Extra mileage factored in due to distance to shuttle parking.

The first 8 miles in pretty much uphill, quite the bear as once we got above 6k elevation every North facing slope was still covered in snow. So a fair bit of post-holing and wet feet. The recent storm had pretty much ever seasonal water source going, so that lift our spirits. Camped at Chilson Camp.

Day two I made everyone get up early so we could be on trail at first light. Hiked to Horse Camps Seep for watering up and morning break. Excellent site, tons of water. We cameled up hard before leaving and took ~6 liters each when leaving since once we dropped lower in elevation the likelihood of water shortened. Maybe a bad call as we found two more good sources along the way, but better safe than sorry on water in the desert. Plus, training weight! Camped at Brush Springs Campsite (spring was dry)

Day 3 hiked out the 6 miles to the LF Ranch road, took a break, and decided we didn't need to visit the river for water and tromped the 4 more miles back to Doll Baby Road for our vehicle.

Over all a very pretty and challenging hike. I worry about thru hikers in this range if we don't get more water in the spring. Going to be ugly and there's no easy way to portage out some water caches for them. It was a big topic among us all during the trip.
