10 Mi trip back to the trail head from hwy 87. Hiked up with Bob and Brad, great weather, nice cool wind on top. Route finding a little sketchy on the last .25 mile or so. A good time had by all.

72 Miles & 16 Portages

Entered at Atikokan Ranger Station, Route - French-Pickerel-Bisk-Beg-Fern-Olifaunt-Sturgeon-Malaigne River-Sturgeon Narrows/Cutty Creek-Sturgeon-Lonely-Walter-Elizabeth-Jesse-Maria-Pickerel-French Lake.

Great fishing this time, just my Son & I went this year, everyone else stayed lower at the BWCA.

Note: Fisher maps are quite out-of-date in relation to portage lengths and campsites, paddle planner has them down pat, with pictures and correct GPS coordinates.

First day in it was near 80 degrees, last day we had snow and thirty knot winds making canoe travel interesting at best.

Started out at my son's cabin, hiked down to the shoreline trail and then thru the wetland to the shoreline itself. Black flies almost carried us off when we hit the shore :o , I should have taken a picture, there must have been a thousand or more on my son's back, torture!! Headed back to the wetland between the trail and the shore and they didn't follow us. Saw some of the largest Birch trees I've ever seen, couldn't estimate just how old these trees were, most likely there when Columbus landed though.

This hike was not as easy as I had anticipated. The base of the hill, on the way to the top, starts out with a loose scree field that makes the climb, as well as the descent, unstable :scared: , it's a pleasure when you hit the boulders near the top just to have something solid under your feet :D . I skated most of the way down the loose area :o . Don't get me wrong, the hike is most definitely worth the effort and the views are well worth the trouble, feels higher than it is. This is a bushwhack no defined trail, just a very few scattered cairns. The parking area is a small pullout off Apache Trail SR88 on the left approx. 7.8 miles past Lost Dutchman Road.

Went up late this afternoon, getting dark on the way down saw two groups heading up 1. Man & his young son (planned to camp on top) and 2. Three 20 something fellows behind them (even later). I don't see how they could possibly make it up there before night, I wish them well. :scared:

There is still a good sized puddle on the draw. :app:

Bob came up with this combination, it's our last hike together for some time since Bob is heading back to Iowa :lone: This was a really nice hike, the weather was perfect and the views fabulous. Plow saddle appears to get very little use, but we had lunch down at a horse trough by the intersection of Plow Saddle & Frog Tanks, then hiked on Frog Tanks back up to Reavis Ranch trail and on out. Gonna really miss Bob, he's been a great hiking partner.

Bob & I drove up this morning with the intention of hiking Mt. Peeley Summit, however the wind was blowing so hard and the temps were quite low so we decided to scrub that idea :out: . Looking for an alternative, we drove down to Sycamore Creek on FR 201 and found Little Saddle Mountain Trail. We followed the trail up to the AZT connection, turned left and hiked it back to old hwy 87 then we followed Sycamore Creek back to the Jeep. It turned out to be a nice hike, we bumped in to a bird watcher down in the creek, other than that we had the place to ourselves.

Bob & I decided to do a key swap hike on the Ballantine Trail. Bob started up at Cline TH and I started down at the Ballantine TH, BTW, it took Bob 45 min. to drive his Jeep up to the trailhead from the Beeline hwy. and it took me 35 min. to drive out. The distance and AEG as recorded on my Garmin is 12.89/4328, it recorded lower when downloaded, but I entered these figures so anyone considering this hike would know what to expect. My hike followed a well defined trail that had an AEG of approx. 2000 all the way up to Boulder Flats, then things got interesting. The trail all but disappears in places and the cats claw & Manzanita make for, at times, a formidable barrier. I met Bob when I was 8.25 miles in and he was 4.65 from Cline TH, we had lunch next to a huge elk horn. There is plenty of running water, as of this writing, past the Ballantine Corral down below and up in the pines 3 miles from Cline TH. When you're on top, just shy of the saddle, there are numerous large fallen trees over the trail and this, added to the overgrowth, can make travel difficult. We chose to do this hike, because not many do considering the logistics of a shuttle or key swap. I'm really glad we had a chance to complete this hike, there were some beautiful sites and we encountered no others on the trail. The last two miles heading down to Cline were uneventful, but the condition of the trail shows that it receives very little use. If you chose to do this hike, be prepared to bring your best route finding skills along with you. I would not recommend wearing shorts or short sleeves and bring plenty of fluids also, but most of all...have fun, we did!

Took Bob over to the West Side for another pickup load of firewood, since we were in the area we tried the White Tanks park. Took the Ford Canyon Trail and hooked up with the Mesquite Trail, GPS recorded 11.92, but corrected back to 10.72 when downloaded........Nice trail, hit 92 degrees today so it's definitely warming up. Didn't see any other hikers after the first mile, however we did run in to a girl wearing a bikini riding a horse.

Bob agreed to help me load some firewood in Buckeye, so we thought we would take the opportunity to check out the Estrella Mountain area. This is a great mountain bike trail, but not too much for the hiker in my opinion. Not much in the way of views or shade on this trail, still had fun though.
