Bob and I had a little time this afternoon to do a short hike out Pass Mountain way. We did a out and back and ran into several other hikers, one on vacation from Germany. He was loving the beauty Arizona hiking has to offer.

10 Mi trip back to the trail head from hwy 87. Hiked up with Bob and Brad, great weather, nice cool wind on top. Route finding a little sketchy on the last .25 mile or so. A good time had by all.

Entered at Atikokan Ranger Station, Route - French-Pickerel-Bisk-Beg-Fern-Olifaunt-Sturgeon-Malaigne River-Sturgeon Narrows/Cutty Creek-Sturgeon-Lonely-Walter-Elizabeth-Jesse-Maria-Pickerel-French Lake.

Great fishing this time, just my Son & I went this year, everyone else stayed lower at the BWCA.

Note: Fisher maps are quite out-of-date in relation to portage lengths and campsites, paddle planner has them down pat, with pictures and correct GPS coordinates.

First day in it was near 80 degrees, last day we had snow and thirty knot winds making canoe travel interesting at best.

Started out at my son's cabin, hiked down to the shoreline trail and then thru the wetland to the shoreline itself. Black flies almost carried us off when we hit the shore :o , I should have taken a picture, there must have been a thousand or more on my son's back, torture!! Headed back to the wetland between the trail and the shore and they didn't follow us. Saw some of the largest Birch trees I've ever seen, couldn't estimate just how old these trees were, most likely there when Columbus landed though.

This hike was not as easy as I had anticipated. The base of the hill, on the way to the top, starts out with a loose scree field that makes the climb, as well as the descent, unstable :scared: , it's a pleasure when you hit the boulders near the top just to have something solid under your feet :D . I skated most of the way down the loose area :o . Don't get me wrong, the hike is most definitely worth the effort and the views are well worth the trouble, feels higher than it is. This is a bushwhack no defined trail, just a very few scattered cairns. The parking area is a small pullout off Apache Trail SR88 on the left approx. 7.8 miles past Lost Dutchman Road.

Went up late this afternoon, getting dark on the way down saw two groups heading up 1. Man & his young son (planned to camp on top) and 2. Three 20 something fellows behind them (even later). I don't see how they could possibly make it up there before night, I wish them well. :scared:

There is still a good sized puddle on the draw. :app:

Bob came up with this combination, it's our last hike together for some time since Bob is heading back to Iowa :lone: This was a really nice hike, the weather was perfect and the views fabulous. Plow saddle appears to get very little use, but we had lunch down at a horse trough by the intersection of Plow Saddle & Frog Tanks, then hiked on Frog Tanks back up to Reavis Ranch trail and on out. Gonna really miss Bob, he's been a great hiking partner.
