"We're the battling b*stards of Bataan;
No mama, no papa, no Uncle Sam.
No aunts, no uncles, no cousins, no nieces,
No pills, no planes, no artillery pieces.
And nobody gives a damn.
Nobody gives a damn."

by Frank Hewlett 1942

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Battling B*stards of Bataan’s liberation from the Japanese forces. I considered myself blessed because I have the honor of knowing one of the remaining survivors. I marched for him and thinking about what he must have gone through helped me push myself to the end. I by no means was the fastest….but I reached my goal of finishing.

A friend and I have begun training for the Bataan Death March Memorial Ruck which will be held on the 19th of March in White Sands New Mexico. The event is 26.2 miles with 35lb ruck sacks on.

Estrella Park offers a great venue for us to conduct this training. There was very little traffic early in the morning. In fact, I do not think we saw another person until we made our way back to the trail head. The weather was perfect. There was a storm coming in just East of us from the South. I love watching the clouds "scrape" the tops of mountains. What an incredible day!

Hit the trial with my youngest daughter for the first time. She loved it....well for about the first .5 mile. Then she was asleep for the rest of the ride. But that's ok. The trails were in great condition. There was very little traffic.

Started on South Trail. Then hit Goat Camp. From Goat Camp, I jumped on Bajada leading to Mule Deer which brought us back to the trail head. Beautiful day!

My apologies for this being so late. I just realized that this hike did not have a triplog with it. As memory serves, it was a very hot day. And I also underestimated the power of elevation when it comes to judging how far of a hike my family and I should take. Let’s just say I was in a bit of trouble when we finished! With that said, the views were spectacular and totally worth it!

After spending a little time last night researching, I was able to find a more secluded trail to hike this evening. Once my work commitment was completed at around 5pm, I rushed back to my rental car, added the address to my phone and hit the road. Knowing that I was working against the clock, I didn’t have time to change into “trail appropriate” clothing so I tossed on my hiking shoes and left the trailhead with my pressed slacks and button up shirt. Lucky for me, about 80% of the path is covered with beautiful white sand. Although, it did get a little soggy near the “back end” of the loop. Overall, it was well worth the rush!

Oh…and for any of you following along at home....no youths today!

I happened to be in Florida for a work related event and could not pass on the chance to hit a local trail. [Full disclosure, the trail is located in the middle of a populated area and there is the occasional "youth" sneaking some weed...]

With that said, views of nature were available. Being from Arizona, it is a different experience having the the environment surrounding the trail "come to life". On my way out a fellow hiker stated that she just saw two alligators. Unfortunate(I think...), I did not have such luck. However, it was still a nice walk in the woods.

In a last minute effort to find an easy trail for Em and I, I choose Brown's Ranch Road. I'm glad I did. It turned out to be a wonderful little hike.

This was a short little hike to get all of us out of the house for a bit. Getting out and about with a 4 month old and a 2 year old can be more challenging than the hikes themselves!

I'm reaching back in the memory bank for this one! A lot has happened in the few weeks that have past. My wife and I were blessed with our second baby girl on the 24th. Hints the reason this is so delayed...

It was a nice hike overall. As usual we got a later start than desired but it all worked out in the end. I knew I wanted a low mileage loop just encase Jess went into labor a bit early and I needed to make a emergency exit off the trail.

Overall it was great hike with the dog on another beautiful Az day!

We got a little later start than I wanted however, the day turned out great. This was the first opportunity for my daughter and I to try out our new Osprey Poco pack. Overall I am happy with the pack. Emma seemed to enjoy the ride as well.

We took Black Rock Long Loop and connected it to Waterfall Canyon trail. I think it has been said before, but I am really surprise more people do not do this to avoid the large crowds at the Waterfall Canyon trail head. I think it should be said that the individuals working at the park do a wonderful job. For the amount of people that use the park it is almost always in great condition.

The trail itself isn't much more than a nice walk through the desert. This was a good thing for this trip considering I had a two year old strapped to my back. She loved it! Which I'm thankful for because I want to get her out in nature more often.

Cheers!

An amazing hike! I could not have asked for better weather this early in September. Overall, the trail was in great condition. Zoey(my dog) and I got an early start leaving the trailhead at about 0700. Not realizing it at first, we completed the trail in reverse (counterclockwise). So in our case, the beginning of the trail was not much more than a leisure walk next to the lake and then along a portion of the Prescott Trail(Peavine Trial). Shortly after the halfway point, the trail began to get a bit more technical with some narrow passes and steeper climbs.

Surprisingly, for most of the trip Zoe and I were pretty isolated. There was the occasional jogger on the flatter portions, but other than that it was fairly tranquil in the beginning. It wasn't until the last 1.5 miles that we began to notice more hikers.

Side note, if you are intending on taking a dog make sure he/she is acclimated to narrow/steep tail conditions.

Happy hiking!
