We were hoping to go in the Opera House but it wasn't opened so we had to be satisfied with seeing the exterior which was fabulous as well.

The Palais Garnier, also known as L'Opéra Garnier, is a historic 1,979-seat opera house at the Place de l'Opéra in the 9th arrondissement. It was built for the Paris Opera from 1861 to 1875 at the behest of Emperor Napoleon III.

The COLUMNS 8 rostral columns surround the Opéra Garnier:

4 on the side of the emperor's pavilion, 4 on the subscriber pavilion side were inspired by the rostral columns built by the Romans to commemorate ancient naval victories, and like those of the Place de la Concorde built twenty years earlier, these lampposts display figures of ship prows .
